Incredibles 2 Animation: From Creating the Literal World to Making An Action Scene | #Incredibles2Event

The process of making an animated film is arguably more complex than shooting a live action one. All of the sets, costumes, characters, etc, have to be created from scratch. If you see a vase holding a plant in the background of a scene, someone had to create that. They had to use an animation program and build that vase AND that plant. Not to mention all of the other little details such as making bricks look like bricks. As we see in Incredibles 2, animators had to create an entire city for the super battles to take place. From background things, to a high speed chase – we learned about the incredible (no pun intended) process!

Creating The World Of The Incredibles

The decor and aesthetic of the first Incredibles film was in the 1950s, but was pushed a little bit forward to early 1960s for Incredibles 2. Ralph Eggleston took some of his time to discuss his role in the creation of Incredibles 2 with us while we were are Pixar in April. His job is basically to create the world of the film, and you would be surprised at how much goes in to that! If you think about it, the world is a character in the film as much as any other character – it has to support the story being told. This is done with things like textures and lighting.

Bob and his team used mid-century design in order to bring the world of the Incredibles to the big screen.  The animation team has to design everything – EVERYTHING! From the food, to the take out containers, to the floors – every single thing you see is built from scratch. In order to do this, they gather lots of reference from many different sources. This time period has a very specific color packet. What textures and colors describe that time period.

New Parr Home

Since the end of the first Incredibles, the Parr family has been living in Safari Court. Safari Court is a mid-century motel that next to an interstate. And they are going stir crazy. Their home from the first film was a 1300-1500 sq. ft. home. The idea for Incredibles 2, was that they would move to 2300 sq.ft. suburban home. An idea that was used in the 1950s a lot is bringing the outside in, so that meant designing a lot of indoor plants. The team also utilized Terrazzo flooring quite a bit. This house was completely done and shaded, which took 6 months, and was in production when a story change happened, causing it to be scrapped.

The new new Parr home, as the team lovingly called it, is a 20,000 sq. ft. house! This home even has water running through every room. We got to see some of the footage with this house and WOW! Again, I cannot believe it was all made from the ground up. The team only had 2.5 to 3 weeks to create it, so they were under a real time crunch! Eggleston told everyone to go crazy because of this. The final Parr home was greatly inspired by James’ house in North by Northwest. One feature that I thought was pretty amazing is the bottom of the swimming pool is the ceiling in the den! What!

Bringing the Sets to Life

Next we got to talk with Philip Metschan, the Visual Designer, about bringing the Incredibles sets to life. He reiterated what Ralph had told us – that sets are like a character, so it is important to understand them. Pre-Visualization (PreVis for short) is the idea of a  rough sketch, of protyping something. By doing this, everyone on the animation team can get on the same page about the world they are creating. The PreVis team builds quick models so there is something everyone can physically look at and react to. This gives them a better understanding of how the art and the story are developing.

The PreVis team takes the storyboards that have been drawn by several different artists, several different ways, and brings them together with the reference material. They even draw maps of where action needs to take place, and what camera angles they might need to make the story flow. Essentially, they bring everything off the drawing page and into the world. Seeing the characters in the space allows the team to judge if it is big enough for them, if it feels comfortable, and if any changes need to be made.

Adding Props

On Incredibles 2, Nathan Farriss, the set supervisor, led a team of 55 people in the sets department. This team took the concept art, reference, and PreVis work and turned it in to what we will see on the screen. They make all of the props, architecture, vehicles, vegetation, skies, and set extensions. So yeah, basically everything. Their team is split in to five groups: modeling, set dressing, shading, set extension and skies, and sets tech.

Nathan explained to us that computers are really good at making straight lines, but in the real world, how many straight lines do we actually see? Most things have bumps and are uneven – how many roads have you seen that are actually straight with no flaws? I am willing to bet not many, if any. So the set team spends a lot of time making straight lines not straight anymore. They add textures and color – all while building everything from scratch.

This team has to pay a lot of attention to detail – especially for the hero props. I think the most interesting part I learned about was the set dressing group. They take empty spaces and fill them full of props – as well as story items. If a scene calls for a sink full of dirty dishes and piles of dirty laundry on the floor, they create that. Their job is to make things look lived in. Then the shading team adds color and texture, making everything feel real.

The Runaway Train

In the footage we saw, there was a runaway train action scene. I was really excited to be able to chat with the team that created this scene, from beginning to end. It started out as a story reel, which is basically a drawn version of the scene, and ends up with what everyone will see on the big screen. The story reel is the blueprint, the foundation, for all of the departments that will get their hands on it before the final version is completed.

We got to see the story reel version and it was pretty awesome. Ted Mathot, the Story Supervisor agreed. However, he said being that this is a Pixar film directed by Brad Bird, the team asked themselves how they could make it better. After putting their heads together they came up with three things.

Balancing the Super with the Mundane

Something that we heard in presentation after presentation is that the Incredibles is about the super and the mundane. No scene should be super for too long without the introduction of something mundane and vice versa. To comply with this, the team added a phone call from Dash to Helen (who is chasing down a train on her Elasticycle at the moment). This adds humor and makes the story relate-able to moms who just cannot get away completely – ever (I know I can’t!).

They also introduced the police to this scene, which helped to showcase Elastigirl’s ability to be doing something super. The police were stopped by traffic, and she could get around it. I don’t want to explain how, because I want you to be surprised when you see it, but trust me, it’s super! The team also changed the way that Helen eventually stops the runaway train, which again, I will not spoil, but it works.

The Elasticycle

Helen has a new toy in Incredibles 2 – the Elasticycle! This thing is amazing, and I was excited to be able to learn how it all came together and was designed. Getting to see it in action was pretty cool and I cannot wait to (hopefully) see more of it when I see Incredibles 2 in theaters. Kureha Yokoo talked to use about how the Elasticycle came about. She explained that during the design process they really considered the fact that the Elasticycle was an extension of Elastigirl. Brad Bird said that fit is everything. Meaning it needed to be cool, yes, but it needed to fit Elastigirl, and be functional as well.

They referenced many different motorcycles for inspiration when designing the Elasticycle, but they also looked at different watersports as well. Kureha wanted to force Helen to use the bike in unique ways, and I think they really accomplished that. I don’t want to give too much away, but I will say that the bike splits when she wants it to – and that is really fun to see!

Adding Visual Effects

Amit Baadkar, the Effect Director on Incredibles 2, took some time out of his day to show up how visual effects were introduced in to the high speed chase scene. He touched on things I never would have even thought about like how the sparks of the slowing train had to be perfect, and how the size of the glass shards were very important. For example, if they are not large enough, you will not see them, and then the effect of the broken glass is lost on the audience.

Amit Baadkar Incredibles 2

In this scene, Amit’s team of six was responsible for sparks, glass destruction, smoke, and explosions. He let us know they had several challenges, but that action scenes are always really fun to work on. Tiresmoke is a supporting effect, meaning it cannot draw too much attention to itself. The audience needs to feel the effect, but not focus on it too much that they miss the action. Sparks are a supporting effect as well. The team wanted to portray chaos, danger, and loss of control – but not take over the scene with the sparks. The explosion in this scene is the complete opposite – it is called a hero effect. This effect should take center stage and draw in the eyes of the audience. The explosion was supposed to be big, but not too big. I have seen the final cut and I can confirm, they did their job!

About Incredibles 2

In Incredibles 2, Helen is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet, Dash, and baby Jack-Jack—whose super powers are about to be discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.

Mythical Slyme Brings Kids Slime Tins Featuring Unicorn Poop, Boogers, & More!

37

Two of my young daughters’ favorite things are potty humor and slime. This mythical slyme combines those two!

unicorn blood

If you’ve got kids in the house, you’ve probably have conversations with the words snot, boogers or poop. Lord knows I do! My girls are 5 and 6 and they LOVE potty humor. They just cannot get enough of it. And OK, my husband and I can’t get enough of it either. Second on their list is probably slime, so when those things combine, magic happens. Tactile compound maker Mythical Slyme is on trend with their stretchy, gooey putty tins of Unicorn Boogers, Unicorn Tears, glittery pink Unicorn Poop, and more!

About Mythical Slyme

Unlike homemade slime, Soap Bubble Slyme is glossy, not sticky, and easy to clean off of hair and carpets (which you know I love!). Like jumping into a puddle, kids adore the opposite of staying tidy and clean. Sensory play allows children to utilize and understand all five senses. It builds their creativity and learning through exploration. Playing with slime encourages the development of fine motor skills and coordination! When play is done with Mythical Slyme, the gooey mess goes right back into the tightly-capped (and really cool looking) tin.

We received Unicorn Tears, Unicorn Kiss, Unicorn Boogers, Unicorn Poop, Unicorn Dreams, Unicorn Blood, Unicorn snot, and Unicorn Sweat.

Video Review

I knew immediately that my young daughters would be excited about these mythical slimes. So I asked them if they wanted to do a video for their YouTube channel, with no explanation. Then I surprised them with all 8 tins of Unicorn Slime. You can see what they thought about them (spoiler – they loved them!) and which ones were their favorites.

Talking Marvel with Comic Book Writer Ann Nocenti

NOCENTI post master

When I first learned about the Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes exhibit at the Museum of Pop Culture, I knew it was something I was going to have to check out. I researched for a bit and decided that my family and I would be taking a trip out to WA this summer to check it out. As huge comic book fans, how could we not?! The fact that Ann Nocenti is the Executive Producer? That is the icing on the cake. Ann has created some of my most favorite comic book character like Mojo, Longshot, and Typhoid Mary. She also wrote an amazing run of Daredevil. Basically, she is a super talented comic book writer, creator, and editor – and I got the chance to talk with her one on one.

mojo

The Mojo Universe

The Mojo Universe is hands down one of the best story lines in the comic books. If you don’t know anything about him, basically he rules over an Entertainment Universe where he plays out reality and game shows involving some of our favorite heroes, like Longshot. I asked Ann how that came about.

Arthur Adams and I wanted to work together. The creation of those characters [Mojo, Longshot, etc] were a mind meld between my and Arthur’s brain. I was doing media studies at the time and I was reading things like Marshall McLuhan and Noam Chomsky and all the media analysists at the time. [Chomsky] was saying all the media are buying each other out and they are becoming one voice – and one voice is dominating the news. So we created this universe where there was this creature that was basically dominating the airwaves. And Arthur came up with this insane drawing of a big, fat, yellow guy who was babbling and vain and controlling the media.

We discussed the fact that this story line is still relevant and Ann pointed out that much of what she was writing about thirty years ago still is. I used the word sad and she it is sad, but life, and that she has a lot of hope. When asked briefly if there were any characters she created that never made it to the pages of a comic book, but she wished they did, she had a brief, but pretty amazing response.

I had very good editors. So if I proposed something that sucked, they probably didn’t let me do it.

Being a Woman in the Comic Book Industry

Having a job at Marvel Comics or Marvel Studios would be a dream job for me. I work with them here and there and it is always an incredible experience. Ann has been in and out of the industry for a while now, so I asked her what it was like working as a woman in the comic book industry when she started. I thought she might tell me about how she had to deal with sexism and trolling, but it was quite the opposite.

We never really felt a lot of sexism back then – sort of the opposite. The men in the field were really welcoming – Archie Goodwin, Denny O’Neil, Mike Carlin – all these guys that were the editors up at marvel Comics were like ‘hey try writing, try editing, let me look at your stories’. I did not feel what I have encountered when I came back to DC Comics and I started writing Catwoman. I had my first experience of trolling. It was intense misogyny – I was like ‘ oh my God, when did this happen?’.

She went on to explain that she knows she is tough, and she has traveled the world, and is a really strong woman. But noted that if she was a young up and coming writer, this would crush her.

daredevil netflix

Daredevil Netflix Series

Since Ann wrote for Daredevil for quite a long time, you know I had to ask her about the Daredevil Netflix Series. It is one of my favorites, but I wanted to know if she watched it, and she said right away that she does, and that she really enjoys it.

I love it. I don’t love all the Netflix TV shows, but I love [Daredevil] and Luke Cage. They are just rocking the world. They are just doing it right. The character development – The Kingpin.

I personally hope that we see Typhoid Mary come to the Daredevil series. In my opinion, she is a major part of Matt Murdock’s life. I asked Ann what she thought about seeing her possibly enter the series.

I hope they use her. She was built and designed and created by John Romita Jr. and I to be the perfect foil for Daredevil. To have each personality go after different aspects of his persona. He is a do-gooder lawyer, but he is a vigilante; he’s got this christian catholic thing but he wears a devil suit. Typhoid Mary has these different split personalities that went after each one of his personalities.

Avengers 4 Predictions

Avengers: Infinity War is still one of the most popular movies in the world, rightfully so, and so I asked Ann if she had seen that. She said that she got to see it early as part of the Marvel Friends and Family. As you might know, I have attended a few Marvel World Premieres and there is nothing like them. Ann agreed saying that when everyone in the audience is somehow related to Marvel or works with Marvel, the crowd is so enthusiastic – whooping and screaming. She even compared it to the Rocky Horror Picture Show with audience participation, and I have to agree! She offered up some of her Avengers 4 predictions, and I have to say, they are similar to my own.

I don’t think they are exciting theories. I think everyone who turned in to black goop isn’t really dead. And that Strange saw an infinity of universes and picked the one that he knew certain people would survive in. He’s got something going that is gonna ripple backwards. It’s gonna be one of those plots where everything goes backwards and makes sense. If I was in the writers room trying to figure out what to do next, that would be one of my theories. But because that is such an obvious theory, I would also be in the writers room saying wait a minute, we probably shouldn’t do what everyone expects us to do.

Team Cap or Team Iron Man?

It seems to be a pretty important question among comic book fans – Team Captain America or Team Iron Man. You guys all know by now that I am Team Iron Man, but of course, I had to ask Ann Nocenti what side she has chosen. She explained that she hasn’t seen the movie yet, but we talked about the debate, and she said it sounded like an age old debate that we see in the comics a lot.

If I could read your mind, how uncomfortable would you be right now? You would be very uncomfortable. How do you co-exist with someone who can read your mind? How do you co-exist with someone who if you get them mad can set the room on fire? That is a metaphor for so many things. With the mutants it was a metaphor for the holocaust, and today we see it in the power of the wealthy. I think these are solid themes that you can keep reworking because they are strong themes.

ann nocenti catwoman

Catwoman

OK, OK, I know Catwoman is DC, but man I love her. Ann recently wrote Catwoman (genius run by the way!) so we had to talk about her a little bit.

She’s complicated – [as are] all of the female superhero characters that trade on their sexuality. Is it feminism or is it exploitation? That’s just the way it is. She is an old school femme fatale who wears a skin tight leather outfit with a zipper – that she rises and lowers depending on what she wants. Is that empowering or is it exploitation? That is what is so fun about her. You can walk that line and embrace both. Embrace what has ripped the feminism movement apart for 30 years – sex work, starring in pornography videos on Tube V sex – is a woman’s right to do those things empowering or exploitative? Feminists are split on it.

Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes Exhibit

The most important part of conversation was, of course, about the new exhibit – Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes. This is a brand new exhibit at the Museum of Pop Culture and as a huge comic book fan, I plan to try to get my family out there ASAP. After speaking with Ann, I want to get out there even more. I was thrilled when she told me this exhibit is set up for any level (and age) of Marvel fans.

The exhibit is designed so that you can walk in and you can be someone who has no idea what Marvel Comics is, you can be someone who has only seen one movie, you can be a geek fan, and you will be happy. You can walk up to and look at the library of Congress Steve Ditko page – the first time Spider-Man put on his costume and tried out his web shooters. The curator made sure he has unbelievable pieces. Like the first appearance of submariner, the first Marvel comic. So you have got these Holy Grail moments.

Ann also explained that there are infographics throughout the exhibit that take you deep into how a comic is made and all about different creators. I even found out that there are some original pages I would kill to see in person – like four from Frank Miller’s Death of Elektra.

The feeling that you have when you go up to these pages, for me, the 80s work. Everybody has a different touchstone. We have Black Panther costumes – whatever you are in to.

Okoye Black Panther

Build Outs

It sounds to me like a lot of work and planning went in to this exhibit to make it perfect. Ann told me all about the different build outs and I, for one, cannot wait to see them in person.

We have a hallway that is an infinity room for Doctor Strange. Steve Ditko artwork playing giant on an animation loop and you can get lost in there. Everybody wants a photo of themselves in the infinity room.

Photo Ops

I don’t know about you, but I can never turn down a good photo opp! Ann told me about so many amazing ones in the Marvel Universe of Super Heroes exhibit – and I really want to go take some pictures. Not only can sit on a couch with The Thing while he takes a nap, you can also have an upside down kiss moment with Spider-Man. I mean, who doesn’t dream about that? I sure do! Ann told me that of course, she has a selfie of herself kissing Spidey – how could you not?

Captain America Guardians Walkman Groot

Original Sountrack

Just when you think things couldn’t get any better at the Marvel Universe of Super Heroes exhibit, think again. Ann told me something that had me over the moon excited.

This is heartstopping – Hans Zimmer wrote an original soundtrack for the show. It changes: as you go into the infinity room you will hear like a cosmic soundtrack, you go into the street art hallway where you have got Luke Cage’s hoodie you hear the influences of the soundtrack from Luke Cage. It is an immersive experience where you can go really geek.

Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger on Freeform Will Hook You From The Start | #CloakandDagger

Cloak & Dagger are a couple of my favorite comic book characters. I have always loved how connected they are and how if you see one without the other, it just doesn’t seem right. So when I heard that Freeform was going to have a Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger show starting this summer, I was thrilled. Freeform is home to some of my favorite shows, like The Fosters, so I had a feeling this was going to be a big hit for me. When I was given the chance to watch the first few episodes before they aired, I was super excited. Trust me when I say, this show is going to hook you from the start – Marvel fan or not!

Grabs You From The Start

Right from the opening of the first episode I was sucked in. We see Cloak and Dagger when they are young kids and discover how they are connected. I immediately became invested in these two characters and wanted to know what happened with them as they grew up. Cut forward to them as teenagers and I was even more in to learning their stories. I was happy to see the show going back and forth between the past and the present so that I could see the reasons their lives were turning out how they were. This show is full of drama and suspense, and I think it is only going to get better.

Different From The Comics

Like most movies and TV Shows, there are some differences from the comic books of course. But wow, from what I have seen – I am really looking forward to how this series progresses. It is not for young kids, but ages 14 and up could probably handle it, as long as you talk to your kids about things like drugs and violence. You can easily enjoy this show even if you know nothing about the comic books. I could tell right away that this series is going to do its own thing, and be a great option for long-time fans, casual fans, and those completely new to these characters.

The Cast

Olivia Holt plays Tandy (Dagger) in this show and I loved her right from the moment I saw her. The more and more I watched her, the more blown away I was by her performance. Aubrey Joseph who plays Tyrone (Cloak) also impressed me. I have seen Olivia Holt act before, but never Aubrey. I love him as Cloak and cannot wait to see more. The young kids that play Tandy and Tyrone are pretty talented as well.

About Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger

“Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger” is the story of Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) – two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened by and awakened to newly discovered superpowers which are mysteriously linked to one another.

I am really looking forward to seeing this series develop – I am totally hooked already!

Tune in to Freeform for the series premiere of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger 6/7 at 8pm!

How to Make Your Very Own Stop Motion Claymation Movie Like Early Man!

Early Man is a movie that the whole family will love. In order to celebrate its home release, my family created our own claymation movie.

hognob claymation

I am surrounded by artists in my house. Trust me, I am not one, but my husband and daughters are. One thing they have always wanted to do was make a claymation video, so we were excited when we received a claymation kit so that we could make our own mini movie. Lionsgate sent it to us along with a copy of Early Man to inspire us to make a movie featuring Hognob. We had so much fun doing this, and I hope you all make one too! It is really easy to do – just check out this instructional video starring the cast of Early Man!

Making Our Movie

A lot of blood sweat and tears went in to making this movie. You should have seen my Hognob – not good. Luckily my husband is a wiz when it comes to this stuff. His Hognob took him way less time to make, and he came out perfect. We all had a lot of laughs and way too much fun making our movie, I hope you like it!

In our movie Hognob crash lands on an alien planet. He is scared by the natives at first, but then he realizes they are setting up a picnic for him. What will happen when a little crab decides to crash the party?

About Early Man

Set at the dawn of time, when prehistoric creatures roamed the Earth, Early Man tells the story of courageous caveman hero Dug (Eddie Redmayne) and his best friend, Hognob, as they unite their tribe against a mighty enemy — Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston) and his Bronze Age City — to save their home.

This movie is so much fun! I knew we were all going to love it as soon as I knew it from the team behind Wallace and Gromit. Both of my daughters loved this movie – especially my 5 year old. She watched it three more times by herself the week it arrived! I highly recommend this movie for families – and Hognob steals the show!

Perfectly Used Cameos Still Can’t Save Deadpool 2 (with video review!) | #Deadpool2 #Deadpool

deadpool 2 poster

I just saw Deadpool 2 last night and, well, this Marvel fan was disappointed. Yes, there was some humor, yes, there were amazing cameos, but no, this movie was not good. Unpopular opinion perhaps but I could barely make it through this movie. In fact, I fell asleep twice. TWICE! During fight scenes! I will keep the first half of this review spoiler free, and then move on to spoilery stuff for those of you that have seen the movie, or just want to know what you are getting yourself into.

The opening scene was good. I found myself laughing and smiling and really enjoying myself. Then it was like I hit a brick wall. All of a sudden the plot slowed down and got weird. There ended up being three or four plots going on and they just didn’t mesh well together. Take one or two of them out, and this movie could have been good (well, better). The humor in the first movie was fantastic and on point, but they held on to too much of it in Deadpool 2. Adult humor became potty humor – unfunny potty humor. There were certain parts that dragged on way too long and it felt like we were going nowhere.

deadpool comic violence

As a viewer, I started to really not care about what was going to happen. I let myself fall asleep – heck, I welcomed a break from what I was seeing. Yes, there were moments I laughed out loud, but not nearly as many as there should have been. I found myself rolling my eyes and groaning at parts because they were just, well, they were dumb. There was so much potential – amazing characters and story lines to draw from, and we got crap. I am a huge Deadpool comic book fan and this nearly ruined the character for me. I won’t be watching it again.

SPOILERS AHEAD

So, up until this point I have been generic in my review, but from now on I need to get out the specifics of what annoyed me. And what made this movie so darn awful. Warning, ahead are spoilers. Nothing that will TOTALLY ruin the plot of the film, but it will give away a few things. Tread carefully. Maybe bookmark this review to read after you have seen the film.

deadpool-2-cable-josh-brolin

Cable’s Arm

I need to talk about how annoying that sound was. For one, Cable suffers from the techno virus so that is why his arm is like that. But, it shouldn’t sound like a mechanical arm. It just shouldn’t. And also, it was really annoying to hear that zipping every single time he moved his arm. It was starting to really get on my nerves. That said, I did enjoy Josh Brolin as Cable (although I preferred him as Thanos).

Juggernaut

I was so flipping excited to see Juggernaut. When we first saw Black Tom Cassidy enter, I figured Juggernaut was not far behind him. I thought, here is the saving grace of this movie (which was really starting to slow down by the prison part). And then, when we finally see him, he was just….. not good. I don’t really know another way to put it. He was bad. The way they defeated him was awful (from what my husband explained to me because I literally could not keep my eyes open).

x force

X-Force

Domino was the best part of this movie. So I am really glad she was brought in. But I was over the moon excited for Shatterstar and Bedlam. They were WAY under used. And all that speculation about who Peter really was? Well, he was no one apparently. I introduced you all to these characters that I know and love and was really looking forward to seeing them on the big screen. That whole part was a let down and almost pointless if you ask me.

Vanessa in Heaven?

I am not sure what this was all about but it was awful. Vanessa, Deadpool’s girlfriend, dies at the beginning. OK, great – that is a good way to propel a hero forward. Nope. He keeps almost dying and seeing her and trying to get to her. And he can’t get through some imaginary wall because he had to help a kid? I mean, I don’t know. This whole plot point really slowed the movie down and it would have been better if they took it all out.

x-men apocolypse

Cameos

With actor cameos such as Brad Pitt, Alan Tudyk, and even Matt Damon, this movie should have been great. One of my favorite parts of the movie was in the X Mansion when Deadpool is complaining about the studio not having the budget for at least one other character (which was done well, but was also done in the first film, i.e. lazy writing), and then we see the cast from X-Men: Apocalypse. These were all perfectly used cameos. Black Tom Cassidy was amazing, although Juggernaut, as I explained above, was not. There was such potential here, and it fell flat.

Mid-Credit Scene

Hands down the best part of the movie was the mid-credit scene. We see Deadpool going through time to fix things. He saves his girlfriend (of course), shoots Ryan Reynolds before he does Green Lantern (hilarious), and fixes the monstrosity of Deadpool that we saw in Wolverine Origins (yay!). He does a few other things as well, and all were very amusing. This is the Deadpool I know and love.

Deadpool 2 is in theaters now – but I would wait for the home release.

Deadpool Explained: What Parents Need to Know Before Taking Their Kids to the Movies | #Deadpool2

0

Deadpool Merc with a Mouth

The first Deadpool movie was pretty spot on to the comic books, and I don’t expect the second to be any different. He is all about violence, bad language, breaking the 4th wall, and yes, even sex. In fact, one of my favorite story lines in the comics includes him carrying around a zombie head of himself from another time line. I highly recommend that parents know what they are getting in to when taking their kids to see Deadpool 2. Do your research and, if possible, view the film before letting them see it.

Language

Deadpool isn’t called the Merc with a Mouth for nothing. Even in the comic books, he has quite the mouth on him. Deadpool 2 is R-rated for a reason. Every parent knows their children and how sensitive they are to language. For example, my daughters are young, but my 7 year old would be fine watching this movie and not repeating any words they hear. Probably my 5 year old as well. My husband was a sailor, and still cusses like one – and my mouth isn’t that clean either. So for us, language is not an issue with this movie, but if language is an issue for your kids, keep in mind, there will be a lot of it.

deadpool comic violence

Violence

Deadpool has always been one of my favorite comics, probably partly because of the violence. I know a big part of why I love this comic is that he breaks the 4th all the time too. But back to the violence – in the comic books, it gets bloody. He stabs people, cuts limbs off, blows them up with bombs. Readers see a lot (and I mean a lot) of blood and guts. Because Deadpool cannot die (not really) he tends to get pretty banged up. In Deadpool we saw a lot of violence, and with bringing in X-Force now, I imagine it will be even worse (or better – depending on your view on violence) in Deadpool 2.

Deadpool Comic

Sex

In Deadpool comic books, pretty much every female looks like what you see above. Huge boobs, scantily clad, and of course, Deadpool is always trying to make out with her. In the first Deadpool movie, there is a solid five minutes (perhaps longer) where Wade Wilson (prior to becoming Deadpool) celebrate different holidays with different sexcapades. I can only imagine there will be something like this in Deadpool 2 as well. There will for sure be sexual references. If your child is mature enough for these, fine, but please take this in to consideration before bringing them to the theater. If it wasn’t for scenes like this, my 7 year old would probably be fine seeing this movie. The sex puts it over the top for me.

Black Panther Executive Producer Nate Moore Talks Easter Eggs, Casting, & More!

In this interview, Black Panther’s Executive Producer, Nate Moore, discusses Easter Eggs, casting, and so much more.

Nate Moore Group Photo

Black Panther is one of the best Marvel movies out there. It broke all kinds of records and I expect to see it clean up when award season hits. As a comic book reader who was never a huge fan of T’Challa in the books, I was blown away by how much I fell in love with the character and his story. When in California for the Avengers: Infinity War Premiere, I was able to sit down with Executive Producer Nate Moore to discuss the Black Panther blu-ray release. We got a sneak peak of the bonus features and learned a lot about the home release process. Pick up Black Panther in stores today!

Nate Moore Behind the Scenes

Choosing the Bonus Features

When filming a movie, there are a lot of pieces that go in to it. So many stories to tell and behind the scenes footage being filmed as well. Since bonus features have become a big part of in home releases, we asked Nate how filmmakers decide which stories they want to tell in these features.

We have a brainstorming session where people get to pitch ideas of what they think is interesting and also what footage we have that we can show. The typical ones like deleted scenes and gag reels, we know we’re going to do so we are collecting that footage all through production and post-production. Then, once we get a sense of what people are responding to out in the world, we can craft our features based on that. This movie just happened to have a lot of really in-depth stuff because the building of Wakanda was so complicated. Unlike other films like Captain America, which I loved and worked on, but that world is a bit more familiar to audiences. So, there’s less to tell. We had a lot of stories to tell from this one.

Nate Moore Interview

Deleted Scenes

The first bonus features that I always watch are the deleted scenes. I am not really sure why, but they are usually my favorite feature to check out. Perhaps because I really like to see pieces of the story that could have been? We asked Nate Moore about the deleted scenes featured on this blu-ray, and which one he really thought about putting in the film.

There’s a great scene in the deleted scenes between Okoye and W’Kabi. It’s after Killmonger has taken the throne and it’s their differing points of view as to what side to take. It’s a fantastic scene. Danai and Daniel Kaluuya do a fantastic job in it. We kept it in every cut of the movie through testing because we thought it was so important for people to understand the relationship. And because it seemed so good, frankly. When we pulled it, we found that audiences understood just as well but the pace issue we had for that part of the movie when away. People got really frustrated in waiting for T’Challa to come back. So, the shorter we made that area, the better it played. Even though we loved the scene. Ryan Coogler and I were the last ones fighting to keep it in – ultimately, we couldn’t make a good argument.

After watching this scene, I agree that it is amazing. I see why it could have been so important, but also understand how it would have slowed things down in the film. I am just glad that I was able to watch it thanks to the bonus features!

Nate Moore Behind the Scenes

Comic Book Writers Meet Script Writers

Nate Moore told us that one of the features on this blu-ray release, which was being done for the very first time, is a roundtable discussion with the comic book writers and the movie writers. I got probably way too excited about this and was counting the seconds before I could watch it. It totally lived up to my expectations, by the way.

We did an interesting thing which we’ve never done before – and we might try again – where we did a roundtable with some of the actual writers of the comic. The people who created the character, Don McGregor who did a run in Jungle Action, Christopher Priest who did sort of a seminal run in the ‘90s, and then Ta-Nehisi Coates is doing the run now – with Ryan and Joe Robert Cole who cowrote the movie. To hear what they thought worked and didn’t and things that they found challenging about the character when they were writing, it was sort of interesting to see how through different eras the character was handled and different challenges they faced because of audience expectation and market expectation.

Nate let us know that he thinks this is something they will continue to do with their in home Marvel releases – and that has this comic book geek SUPER excited! I mean, to see a meeting of the minds like this – wow. Fingers crossed for something like this for Infinity War and Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3!

Nate Moore Interview

Easter Eggs

Something most Marvel movies are known for are their Easter Eggs. These hidden details that are a nod to the comic books or other movies, are sought out by all types of fans. Just check YouTube and you will see thousands and videos devoted to pointing out Easter Eggs. We asked Nate about the Easter Eggs in Black Panther, because there didn’t seem to be many. It turns out that was totally intentional.

When we were building this story, one thing that Kevin [Feige] said very early on was I think there’s enough in this property that we don’t have to have a lot of different intersections because we think it stands alone. That’s also why you don’t see Tony Stark or Steve Rogers – which I think we could have made a case for some of those characters to naturally intersect. But there was so much storytelling and so much detail that we actually were able to keep a lot of that stuff out. And I think it helps the movie just feel like it’s own experience.

Casting

The casting for this film was perfection. I think everyone that has seen it can agree on that. We asked Nate what he thought about how the casting process went – especially for newcomers to the MCU like Michael B. Jordan.

It was really a combination of three things. We inherited some cast. Chadwick was obviously in Civil War. Andy Serkis had been in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Martin Freeman had been in Civil War. When we hired Ryan, one of the first things he said was I would love to find a role for Michael B Jordan because they had done Fruitvale and Creed together. So, he became Killmonger. Ryan suggested Lupita which was an easy sell. Ryan suggested Danai, which was an easy sell. We collectively went to Angela Bassett thinking there’s no way she’s going to do this movie because man, she’s so fantastic. And she was game. Daniel Kaluuya was a Ryan Coogler idea. Two people we found together – Letitia Wright as Shuri and Winston Duke as M’Baku. We did a pretty wide-ranging casting search for them. M’Baku was great because none of us had really ever encountered Winston before and his size and his presence was just so dynamic – even on tapes in a room reading against nobody, he was fantastic.

Black Panther Shuri

The Casting of Shuri

Nate then continued on about the casting of Shuri in particular. I really found in interesting that she was cast based on her chemistry with Chadwick. I feel like we can really see that come across in the film and that is was a great call on Marvel Studios’ part.

We ended up doing two rounds with other actresses reading with Chad and it was really about [Letitia’s] chemistry with Chadwick. It was true on that day and it’s still true – Letitia was one of the few people who could actually get Chad to laugh naturally because Chad is a very reserved person. In the audition, it was like oh, that’s his sister. And even on set, she’s one of the few people that he actually relaxes around.

Of course, I had to bring up the fact that Shuri becomes Black Panther at some point in the comic books. I asked Nate if there are any plans for her to pick up the mantle in the MCU. His response? “It’s definitely a fun possibility. We love that run in the books and she’s such a great character and really popped out of this movie. I think the sky’s the limit. It’s just sort of what is the right time for that story?” Well fingers crossed that we do, because she I love that run in the comics too!

white wolf marvel comics

White Wolf

By now we all know about that amazing post credit scene. We asked Nate how it came about, and he explained for us.

So, the Bucky [scene was] the final scene we shot in additional photography because we realized what was going to happen in Avengers. And we were like oh, we have a great opportunity. We wanted to tell the story of he was frozen – what happened? Is he still programmed? Is he not? Who helped him? Who does he have a relationship with? That was a fun scene because we realized also Bucky very rarely gets to talk to women in our movies for whatever reason. He is always with Cap or shooting people. So, that scene was a lot of fun to shoot and again, Letitia is it so great. So, Sebastian had a good time.

As we were walking out of the interview, I asked Nate Moore about the “White Wolf” reference in this scene. He told me that yes, of course, it was a nod to the comics – and it certainly could mean more in the future. Something that I found interesting, was that he told me Kevin Feige was against using that reference at first, stating that not many people would get it. Well, this comic book fan was REALLY excited to hear those words – and I think most comic book readers were too!

Costuming the Characters of Incredibles 2: Mid-Century Aesthetic & Lots of Hard Work | #Incredibles2Event

Did you know that when making an animated feature film, the crew has to create looks for every single background character? I guess I knew that, but I never thought much about how much work goes in to it. They have to design not only their clothes, but their hairstyles and body types. Of course, the main characters have to be styled as well. It could totally be argued that more work goes in to the costumes for animated films than live action films. While at Pixar, I was lucky enough to talk to the costume designers for Incredibles 2 and I learned so much about the whole process.

Costuming the Background Characters

As you likely know, the Incredibles world is heavily inspired by mid-century aesthetics. Deanna Marsigliese, a character artist for Pixar, has a wardrobe full of mid-century pieces, which is one of the reasons she believes she was brought on to the Incredibles 2 team. When she designs characters, she says she needs two equally creative, but completely different, states of mind. The first being creatively theoretical and the second being creatively practical.

I think we can all agree that costume choices should support the story line of the film and, if done well, they can even help to tell the story better. Deanna describes the process of designing background characters as not boring and actually challenging. To accomplish this she needs to be efficient and clever. I mean, she needs to design literally hundreds of characters – men, women, and children. It is important to realize background characters populate our world – and even compliment it.

Incredibles 2 No Capes Presentation

In order to costume these many background characters, the Pixar team developed a new process to refit clothes on animated characters. They would use the same shirt and same pants, pin it down to one body, and then make that body blend from one shape to another – taking clothes along for the ride. That process gets them 80% there on clothing fit, and then they go in and hand fit the details.

For the background men, they created 12 unique garments and 6 different body types. Adding variations in patterns and colors totaled  72 uniquely costumed male characters. When it comes to the women, they made 20 unique garments and 7 body types. Changing color and hair variations, they came up with 64 uniquely costumed characters.

Incredibles 2 Research

For Incredibles 2, she researched every day folk of the mid-century and came to a conclusion. They were all perfectly tailored. The tailored fit was the most defining quality of that time. She also noticed bold shapes and clean silhouettes. It is important that background characters’ outfits are be iconic and stylish, but simple. They should compliment but never distract.

When creating a wardrobe, character artists are usually inspired by actual sewing patterns. For example, with some patterns separates combine to make a dress – thus two pieces with multiple uses. There are also patterns that use the same basic pattern but add partial design changes (i.e adding a collar or changing sleeve length). Character artists are sure to have a person model actual pieces when possible. This way they can see how actions effect garments and how garments effects actions. Of course, costumes are not just clothing – it also includes glasses, accessories, hair, and groom.

Incredibles 2 Bryn Imagire
“I’m proud to be a female artist in this field. Women have to work harder to get the same recognition and respect that men do, but I don’t mind that. I like to work hard. To be respected as an artist, not by gender, but by my work is important to me. Designing Edna’s and Evelyn’s costumes in #Incredibles2 was great because they are both strong in individual ways. Helping to shape their character arcs from a female perspective was amazing and rewarding. Seeing more strong, independent female characters in films–as we do in our everyday lives–is something that I am excited about and look forward to in the future.” –Bryn Imagire, #Incredibles2 Shading Art Director and Costume Designer #IncredibleWomenOfPixarat Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, Calif. The Incredibles Super Suits & Every Day Dress

While at Pixar Studios, we also spoke with Shading Art Director Bryn Imagire. She was also the shader and art director on the original Incredibles film. She let us know the team respected the design ideas and philosophy that was established in the first film. Of course, this was really important for the movies to mesh well together. They were lucky in that the world is not set in specific time period, so they had the freedom to reference current clothing if they felt it was a better fir for the character.

Being that Incredibles 2 was created more than ten years after The Incredibles, technology is so much more advanced now. This made the costumes a lot easier to design and create. In the first film, the super suits were shaded on to the body of the models, causing the Incredibles logo to stretches and do weird things because it was actually their skin. With the second movie, the super suits are garments that are on top of the bodies – much like actual clothing – making the logo act like it would on actual clothing. The team even made a tangible logo for their reference.

Inspirations for the every day dress of the Parr family:

  • Bob Parr – Bob Newman
  • Helen Parr – Mary Tyler Moore, Audrey Heburn, and Marilyn Monroe. All fabulous women!
  • Violet – She seems rebellious so 1950s design did not feel right when clothing her. The team looked at 1960’s instead. Keds, cuffed jeans, and sweaters.
  • Dash – Brad Bird loves that Dash is a normal kid and only wears T-Shirts and jeans. The team saved money and time by making one t-shirt and shading it a bunch of different colors and patterns. Fun Fact: They always kept the Incredibles colors – yellow, orange, and red.
  • Jack-Jack – Fun Fact: Whenever Bob is home alone with him, he is just in a diaper. You will only see Jack-Jack dressed when Helen is home.
  • Elastigirl Costume – Helen’s new super suit had to be more inconspicuous since she is working in the shadows. You will notice she got darker colors to blend in.

Edna Mode & Evelyn Deavor Costumes

Bryn also walked us through designing the costumes for Edna “E” Mode and newcomer, Evelyn Deaver. With Edna, her head is a oval and her body is a triangle. The team was sure to keep that silhouette in mind when designing for her. E is German and Japanese so the team started looking at Japanese designers. These designers seems to always look comfortable compared to what they are designing for their models – which looks very uncomfortable. The focused on “For something to be beautiful it doesn’t have to be pretty.” To help Bryn think abstractly, she started looking at nature (animals, mushrooms, flowers), paper, snakeskin, and even metal. She felt like E would reuse discarded materials in a new way.

INCREDIBLES 2 Edna Mode

Evelyn Deaver is a new character that you are sure to love. From what I saw of her, I was a big fan. Her look was inspired by Diane Keaton, who I adore so I thought that was really cool. Brad Bird wanted her to feel bohemian and smart. Evelyn is a designer who works a lot and has made a lot of money. It was important that she felt relaxed with her own style. Inspiration for her clothing also came from Patty Smith. Bryn noticed that when Patty wore a masculine shirt it made out of gauzy material or had a dainty print. This seems to be her way of blurring gender lines and stepping in to a man’s world (seems like a story line to me!). Evelyn’s clothing has a very neutral palate.

Making the Costumes Move

Costuming in the digital world has many parallels to the physical world, but also unique challenges. The designers have to start from scratch – meaning, you can’t take costumes from Up and put them in Incredibles, it just wouldn’t work. Bryn and Deanna provided the shading artist with photographs and even a physical sample of what they were looking for when possible. Then that team would start by building a 3D sculpture of the costume in their software. They would then use that to generate two versions. One version would show the model how to move and not be visible – the other to be visible and show colors.

Incredibles 2 Fran Kalal

The model that is created resembles a sewing pattern, which is really cool to see. The team then tessellates it, which means they turn into triangles where the points are connected by springs. The model is then programmed to move likes certain fabrics – for example, to be light or heavy. They take that model and cut it along the seams and apply a pattern or print. They can tell it to be shiny or don’t be shiny in certain areas – which they call color instructions. It is truly amazing that designers can do all this with some code!

Hair in Incredibles 2

In Incredibles 2, the family’s hair underwent an upgrade. In fact, Pixar actually developed and adopted a new hair tool just for use Incredibles 2! Helen’s hair is one of the hardest to work with. It is hard to make it maintain it’s pointed iconic shape, and still move naturally in shots. Want to know something crazy? It actually takes a whole team of people to make sure it would behave like you would expect it to!

All of the background characters have hair too – so the team designs hair for each of them as well. These are the things I honestly have never thought about while watching an animated film. The characters in these need hair and makeup and costuming too – just like live action films! These people work their butts off to make sure we don’t think about things like that.

But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.
