The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 Episodes 4-6 Recap

Vox Machina faces toxic family drama, high-stakes library heists, and a devastatingly dark cult reveal in three unforgettable episodes

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA SEASON 4 EPISODES 4-6

I am still processing the absolute emotional rollercoaster of these last three episodes. The Legend of Vox Machina never fails to deliver the perfect blend of chaotic comedy and heartbreaking drama, but episodes 4, 5, and 6 really raised the stakes.

We finally got to visit Taryon Darrington’s childhood home, and wow, his dad is pretty terrible. I instantly realized how incredibly shady the man was, and my heart broke for Taryon. He just wanted his father’s approval, but his dad clearly thinks him an absolute fool.

The elder Darrington works in trade and initially acted like he knew nothing about the shadowstone, which was clearly a massive lie. Instead of answering questions, he instantly wanted to talk with Percy about making a deal to trade Whitestone goods. It was so obvious that he was up to no good and would be an awful business partner. Thankfully, Percy saw through it and distracted him with a business meeting, bringing Grog along for some hilarious muscle backup, while the others snooped around.

The stealth mission paid off. The team discovered the location of a secret mine where Darrington’s men are actively mining shadowstone. When confronted with the proof, Taryon agreed to join Vox Machina in heading to the mines because he genuinely believed his father’s men had betrayed the family. It didn’t take long for him to realize that was not the case at all – his dad was the mastermind. A great fight ensued, and it ended with the team trapping Taryon’s dad inside his own mine. Talk about poetic justice.

Next, Vox Machina decided to break into a Cobalt Soul library to learn about the Whispered One. As a fan, my brain immediately thought of Beau from The Mighty Nein. Of course, things did not go according to plan at all – which is honestly the fun of it all.

While navigating the library’s defenses, Vex and Vax got exposed to a truth spell, and the secrets started spilling. In the chaos, Vex accidentally let it slip to her brother, Vax, that she and Percy got married in a secret wedding!

In a classic Vox Machina blunder, Grog accidentally took the smart potion instead of Pike. Suddenly acting as the intellectual of the group, Grog was the only one who could read and comprehend the complex texts about the Whispered One. Because Grog was busy reading, he couldn’t spin the massive wheel needed to open the exit. Pike adapted beautifully, using his gauntlets to grow giant-sized and move the wheel herself. They barely escaped with their lives.

Once they were safe, Grog recalled as much as he could remember from his potion-fueled reading session. We learned there is a divine weapon of truth capable of killing the Whispered One, and that ancient champions sacrificed themselves to trap him in a desolate dimension. Because Pike noticed one of the champions strongly resembled her, she knew she had to learn more about her lineage.

Meanwhile, back at Whitestone, Vax, Percy, and Taryon figured out how to seal the dangerous portal beneath the castle. The victory came at a cost, though; Doty lost his life during the process. He is a robot, so I’m sure Taryon can bring him back at some point, but it was still sad to see.

The real tear-jerker came afterward. Vax was in a terrible mood, and Percy eventually apologized, acknowledging that saving his own life had ultimately cost Vax his. It was then that Vax revealed the real reason he was so upset: the secret wedding was just the first of many major milestones he knows he will miss out on when he is eventually gone. It was a super emotional moment that left me completely misty-eyed.

But the writers weren’t done hurting us. Grog and Pike went home to visit her great-great-grandfather, Wilhand, to see what he knew about the champion. Instead of a warm homecoming, they realized Wilhand and the entire town were under the terrifying influence of a cult. In a horrific turn of events, the cult killed Wilhand. Pike and Grog were utterly devastated.

To make matters worse, the final moments revealed that Delilah Briarwood is one of the cult members. She is back! UGH! I cannot believe she keeps finding ways to ruin their lives. Another great three episodes, but I am desperately anxious to see how Vox Machina recovers from these massive blows.
