The Kid Who Would Be King Will Teach Your Kids (and You) Valuable Lessons

0

A huge thank you to 20th Century Fox for sending us to NYC to experience The Kid Who Would Be King press event! All opinions expressed are 100% my own.

the kid who would be king screening

When I first saw the trailer for The Kid Who Would Be King, I was super excited! This looked like a movie that I could take my oldest daughter to see and we would both enjoy it. There is a lot of sorcery and it seemed like a fun new take on the story of King Arthur and the Sword in the Stone. So imagine how excited my daughter and I were when Fox invited us to NYC to see the movie before it hit theaters! Honestly, we were both blown away. This movie was better than I could have ever imagined, and I can’t wait to see it again!

It Is So Relevant

I was shocked at how relevant The Kid Who Would Be King is. Morgana is able to grow stronger again because of the turmoil our world is in. People are greedy, leaders are corrupt, and we are fighting with each other. In the lore, King Arthur was able to defeat her by turning foes in to allies, and our world is far beyond that right now. At the end of the film, Merlin has a quote that really resonated with me. “The world is only as good as it’s leaders.” How true is that? Something humanity really needs to think about as a whole.

Great Lessons To Be Learned

There are so many great lessons to learn from The Kid Who Would Be King. Not only does Alex recruit his bullies to be his allies, he teaches them lessons in doing so. They all join forces to defeat a greater evil. We learn that evil was able to thrive because of how humans were treating each other. We also learn some pretty important values that are part of the knight’s code, but should also be things we all live by. Be a nice person, don’t lie, love each other. Simple, isn’t it?

Camaraderie

I loved seeing the camaraderie between Alex, Bedder, Lance, and Kay in this film. Oh, and we cannot forget Merlin. I laughed and laughed, I grew nervous for them, I cheered them on, and I maybe even teared up once or twice. This is a movie that every kid, and parent, should see because it will show them how they really should treat each other.

Is It Too Scary?

My daughter is almost 8 and she loved it. She really enjoyed it and said that there were some creepy parts, but nothing scared her. I think that my 6 year old would have been frightened in some parts. Not so much the flaming undead zombie knights, but the whispering of Morgana. That part even creeped me out a little! It is totally necessary to the story and really drives home some points, but it might make this movie one to watch at home if your kids are 6 or under (or scare easily).

Final Thoughts

Overall, I give this movie a 9/10. It is a little bit predictable, a tad scary, but overall really important. A fun new take on the story of The Sword and The Stone that is sure to be a hit with many families. Merlin (young and old) stole every scene he was in. The battles were epic. And Morgana made a great villain that everyone will love to hate. It will teach you that evil thrives when we fight with each other. The Kid Who Would Be King gave me a great deal to think about – making it something every adult should see.

We learned some great inside information during the press conference, so stay tuned for more on that!

Future Man Season 2 is Almost Better Than The First Season

2

This review is in no way sponsored. All opinions expressed are 100% my own.

future-man-season-2-poster

Very rarely a sequel, or second season of a television show, is better than the first. Well, season 2 of Future Man just dropped on Hulu this past weekend and it came damn close. The first season blew me away. It made me fall even more in love with Josh Hutchinson as an actor. Eliza Coupe and Derek Wilson quickly because two of my favorite actors as well. And now, their growth and change in season two – amazing. Sure there were some obvious twists, but it didn’t take away from how great this season is.

Warning: There are spoilers from the season ahead. If you have not watched this season and wish to avoid spoilers, stop reading now and bookmark this review for a later date.

future man 2

Different Paths

The majority of this season is spent in the future. Obviously, Josh didn’t completely save the world as we hoped after the end of season one. Our three heroes (Josh, Wolf, and Tiger) are more or less split up throughout these episodes. Their paths cross here and there, and of course for the last few episodes. Each of their stories is fantastic. If I had to choose a favorite – well it would be a tossup between Tiger and Wolf. Tiger, meeting her “time twin” and falling in love with Stu was not expected, but was done really well. I loved seeing her character grow the way she did. And her time twin was hilarious. I totally figured out that she was Achilles a few episodes before it was revealed, but it didn’t bother me.

future man season 2

Wolf taking over the life of Torque was quite a journey. I think I laughed the hardest every time he was on screen. At first, he didn’t want to stay, but then, he ended up loving that life. However, I was relieved when he left his cluster and the NAG (New Above Ground) to join Tiger and Josh.

Same Dirty Humor

If you liked the humor that season one brought you, don’t worry, season two has the same feel. We see penises, we have deaths and explosions filled with gore, and we have cussing. “The Muffle Song”, which is something the kids of the NAG sing while their parents are having sex, had me nearly rolling on the ground laughing. This whole season is hilarious, almost funnier than the first.

Season Three?

We do not know if there will be a season three but oh my goodness, I hope there will be. The way my three favorite time travelers were left, we need one! The ending was good, a tad predictable (I totally knew they would all choose to spray themselves), but mind blowing at the same time. I totally had no clue it would be a televised death event – WHAT! Seth Rogen was amazing in his cameo and I hope he appears quite a bit in season three!

How Amazon Devices Can Help With Your New Year’s Resolutions

How Amazon Devices Can Help With Your New Year's Resolutions

My house is filled with smart devices that help us with every day tasks. Every single room, including my daughter’s rooms, have an Amazon device. So have several Echo Dots, two Echo Dot Kids Editions, and an Echo Plus. On New Year’s Eve night my family wrote down a list of our resolutions and posted up in the kitchen. Alexa has been a huge help so far in helping us stick to our resolutions. I think we might actually stick them all year thanks to her!

Alexa Meditation room

Staying Healthy

One of my resolutions was to make sure I don’t sit at my desk all day. I want to get up and walk around once an hour, and my Echo Plus allows me to do that. I just ask Alexa to set a timer for 60 minutes and she lets me know when I need to get up and take a few laps around the house and walk up and down our stairs. Sleep has a lot to do with health as well, and Alexa has helped my entire family with that. My husband and I say “Alexa, open thunderstorm sounds” every night and she plays relaxing thunderstorm sounds that help us sleep.

We even have a spot in the master bedroom with a large rug and essential oil diffuser which we call our meditation spot. I just connect my bluetooth headphones to Alexa and zone out for twenty minutes or so. I know this has helped my mental health more than I could ever imagine.

My daughters each ask their Echo Dot Kids Edition to read them a bedtime story (thanks for Amazon FreeTime they have over 1000 Audible kids’ books to choose from!). They love it! Every morning when they wake up, with a specialized Alexa alarm of course, they tell us about the story they fell asleep to. And no staying up late thanks to Amazon FreeTime parental controls. We can choose when FreeTime shuts down for the day and turns back on in the morning.

Amazon Echo Kids Edition helps kids fall asleep with bedtime stories!

Staying Organized

Another one of our resolutions is staying organized. Between dance lessons, art classes, music lessons, sports, PTO meetings, and doctor’s appointments, we have a lot going on in the Smith household. Sometimes I forget and double book us, and sometimes I end up missing things (not proud of that). But now with our Amazon devices, Alexa can keep our calendar straight for us.

Adding an appointment is simple, just give Alexa the time and date and she will add it to our calendar. I often hang up with the doctor and immediately tell her, before I have time to forget. Every morning I ask for the schedule for the day and she gives it to me. My husband and daughters ask her for the schedule too, so we are all on the same page about what we need to do for the day.

Connecting Alexa to our Philips Hue lights has been a lifesaver – and a money saver – for us. My girls were notorious for leaving lights on everywhere they go, but now that they can ask Alexa to turn the lights off, they love it! In fact, they might enjoy it a little too much and I have had to tell them to not turn the lights off and on constantly.

Amazon Alexa Family Time

More Family Time

Our major resolution is to spend more quality time together as a family. There are so many ways that Alexa has helped us accomplish this. We love the drop-in feature because it allows us to stay connected. If my husband and I are in the kitchen we can drop-in on the girls’ rooms to ask them to come down for dinner (or for game night). We have a lot of board games that we play but we also play games with Alexa.

The Animal Game is one of our favorites. We come up with an animal and see how long it will take Alexa to guess it. Many nights are spent with our Echo Plus in the middle of the dining room table as we play games with her and asking her to tell us jokes. Oh and I can’t forget the numerous dance parties that we have by asking her to play our favorite songs, albums, and play lists. At least three nights a week, we all meditate together with the help of Alexa.

Amazon Echo Dot Kids Edition

Make Tech Time Educational

The final New Year’s Resolution I want to talk about is our resolution to make tech time educational. My daughters each have an hour of tech time a day during the week, and two on weekends. I was sick of them watching YouTube videos and wasting that time in a brain dead state (seriously it was impossible to even talk to them during that time). The Echo Dot Kids Edition provides them with a kid-friendly, kid-centric Alexa experience. As I mentioned in a previous post, the Echo Dot Kids Edition comes with a device (an Echo Dot), a year of FreeTime Unlimited, a kid-friendly case, and a 2-year worry-free guarantee.

Now, if given the choice between video games or their Echo Dot Kids Edition, the choice is always the later. I am proud to say they love using the educational features like Q&A and a Magic Word. If they get bored or want to try something new, they just have to ask Alexa for a suggestion and she will give them a kid-friendly one!

If you made some New Year’s Resolutions that you want to stick to this year, I know that Alexa can help you stay on track!

We Finally Have the Spider-Man: Far From Home Teaser Trailer!

1

spider-man far from home trailer

Oh my goodness guys, we FINALLY have the Spider-Man: Far From Home teaser trailer – and it was so worth the wait! WOW! I love Mysterio in the comics and I was really scared that he would look cheesy. Because, let’s be honest here, he has a cheesy costume. But he doesn’t! He looks amazing! And I feel like even though we didn’t learn much, we learned a few things.

Mysterio – A Good Guy?

I have seen many comments already about Mysterio being a good guy in this. I highly doubt that is going to happen. He is the master of deception. Remember that. I wouldn’t trust Mysterio as far as I could throw him. Watch out. He is planning something. At first I thought we were looking at Sandman – then I realized there are the Elementals. Maybe. It could be all an illusion. Either way, I am excited!

Nick Fury!

When Nick Fury showed up I FREAKED out. I had no clue he was even going to be in this movie, let alone recruit Spider-Man. I seriously thought that dart was Mysterio’s doing and then…it wasn’t. I’m really excited to see where this goes. I mean, I love me some Nick Fury!

Where Is Iron Man?

We don’t see Iron Man. At all. It seems kind of obvious that we wouldn’t, right? I mean, Endgame isn’t even out yet so they are going to try to avoid spoilers. Peter is told he is all alone now. Could that mean Iron Man is dead? Retired? MIA? Or could it just be a reference to the fact that he is overseas and away from family. From the Avengers. Perhaps they are busy? Who knows, but I am hoping that Iron Man lives. But I am not holding my breath.

About Spider-Man: Far From Home

Peter Parker returns in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next chapter of the Spider-Man: Homecoming series! Our friendly neighborhood Super Hero decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks, creating havoc across the continent!

Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters July 5th!

This craft is sponsored by Gigantosaurus however all opinions expressed are 100% my own.

Gigantosaurus Dinosaur Clothespin Egg Craft

A new show, Gigantosaurus is coming to the Disney Junior block on the Disney Channel this Friday (January 18th). I was able to watch a screener and I promise you that kids (and parents) are going to love this show! It is a lot of fun, and my daughters and I instantly fell in love with the group of dinosaur friends that star in the show – Mazu, Tiny, Bill, and Rocky. My youngest daughter really loves the Gigantosaurus too, who isn’t as mean as you might expect. In order to celebrate this new show, I am sharing with you this craft that is super easy to make, and kids are sure to have unlimited fun with!

Gigantosaurus Pin Puppets

These pin puppets are super easy to make! Just print out THIS FILE (preferably on cardstock). Cut out the dinosaurs and their eggs. Glue the eggs on either end of the clothes pins so that it forms an egg that can be “cracked open”. Each dinosaur friend will go behind the egg so that when you open the clothespin, it reveals who is inside the egg.

Make It A Game

If you wish to make a fun game out of these puppets, you can just add keywords to describe the dino friends on the eggs. Kids will have fun guessing which egg holds which dinosaur. Simply open up the pin to see if they got it right! My daughters love this game. Even though they know the answers by now, they still play it often. And they are always playing with their dinosaur puppet friends.

About Giganosaurus

Based on Jonny Duddle’s bestselling book of the same name, the series stars four fiercely-fun dinosaur friends who will take preschoolers on exciting, comedy-filled adventures as they dare to be themselves and explore the world beyond their nests. Every imagination-inspiring episode follows the group on a quest, as they face their individual fears and work together to solve a problem. As the inquisitive Mazu, playful Tiny, timid Bill, and courageous Rocky aim to learn more about Gigantosaurus, they discover they each have something to learn from him, too.

Keto Baked Turkey Roll-Ups

My husband and I have been eating keto for a year now, and we are always trying to come up with new recipes that the whole family will enjoy. These low carb keto baked turkey roll-ups are one of those. My 7 year old will ask for them by now at least once a month.

I love that I can customize these on an individual basis to fit my family’s preferences. For example, I put no sauce in my youngest daughter’s roll-ups, extra sauce in my oldest daughter’s, and fresh basil in my husbands! This way every one gets what they enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds oven roasted deli turkey (thick cut)
  • 13 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup tomato/pasta sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Italian Seasoning
  • 1/2 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 10 cherry tomatoes (sliced)

The Masked Singer Review & My Celebrity Predictions | #TheMaskedSinger

0

This post is in no way sponsored. All opinions expressed are 100% my own.

the masked singer

I finally got around to watching the first two episodes of The Masked Singer – and I am hooked! My husband and I were glued to the TV, especially during the clue videos. We immediately started with our guesses on who each contestant was. Some of the ones that I came up with, the judges have guessed as well. We didn’t get the Hippo right, but we did know he would be a football player. And the Pinapple was just SO obvious to us! But who are the other animals? Here are my guesses!

the rabbit

The Rabbit

This one is the most obvious to me. I was an *NSYNC girl. I mean, I traveled around the country seeing them in concert. The Rabbit has got to be Joey Fatone. I guessed it from the clue video and even some of the judges agree. Those dance moves, that personality, the clues! Not only did the video end with “It’s Gonna Be Me” (hellllllo!!!!), but he said he has performed on stage with a mask. Joey Fatone has done some broadway (I saw him in RENT and then met him afterwards and it was AMAZING), including The Phantom of the Opera.

the peacock

The Peacock

From the clues and performance he has got to be a magician. And also a singer. Someone that an older generation would have hung posters of up on their wall. My guess? Donny Osmond.

the poodle

The Poodle

This is a tricky one. A comedian. I gotta think Margaret Cho. Because I have no other thoughts right now.

the alien

The Alien

I gotta think that she is a Kardashian. The clue that finally we get to see her but she can’t see us screams reality TV star to me. That banging body and her saying she wants to be in the spotlight for once has me thinking Kendall Jenner.

the bee

The Bee

Diana Ross. Diana Ross. Gotta be here. When she started singing. That AMAZING voice. Come on. Or Tina Turner. Yea. Those are my two guesses.

the raven

The Raven

The Raven was a talk show host and I cannot help but think Ricki Lake. I immediately thought that. I love her!

the unicorn

The Unicorn

I am pretty stumped with this one. I think someone from the LGBTQ community for sure. Maybe RuPaul? But I just don’t know…

the monster

The Monster

This clue package said he had been in jail. And he has an incredible voice. I am thinking someone like T-Pain. Maybe?

the lion

The Lion

This lion can SING! What a set of pipes on her! This is tough one because I have to think seasoned singer. She has a lot of sisters and is considered Hollywood royalty? Gotta be a Braxton!

the deer

The Deer

Because of the clue package I gotta say he is a wrestler or boxer. Has been knocked down, they are taping the antler. I don’t think he can sing at all. And he has a big belly. I am thinking… Stone Cold Steve Austin?

Watch The Masked Singer on Fox Wednesdays at 9pm ET!

Is the Express Pass Worth It When Visiting Universal Studios Hollywood?

Thank you to Universal Studios Hollywood for providing me with a ticket and Express Pass to enjoy the day at the park!

Is the Express Pass Worth It When Visiting Universal Studios Hollywood_

I recently took a trip with some friends of mine to check out Universal Studios Hollywood. We had so much fun – largely in part to the Express Pass. This allowed us to take our time and not stress about running from ride to ride to make sure we got them all in. I have had several friends and family ask me if purchasing an Express Pass is worth it when visiting – and my answer is YES! So worth it! And here is why.

You Can Skip the Lines

With an Express Pass you can skip the lines for pretty much every single ride. Yes. SKIP THE LINES. Similar to Disney’s FastPass+ the Express Pass more than pays for itself if you value your time. Thanks to this pass, visitors gain express access to each ride, attraction, and seated show at Universal Studios Hollywood. This saved our group a lot of time, and allowed us to fully experience the whole park in one day. We were able to do everything that we wanted, and have some down time enjoying our lunch.

universal hollywood marge simpson
If you have the Universal Express ticket, that means more time for character meet and greets!

Save When You Purchase Online

If you decide to visit Universal Hollywood, I highly recommend purchasing your Universal Express tickets online before you go. You can save $10 per ticket online vs. the front gate price. That will add up quickly depending on the size of your group, and you can spend that money on yummy snacks or souvenirs!

universal hollywood simpsons ride
Walk right on The Simpsons Ride!

Overall, I have to say this is extremely worth it. The Express pass ends up being about $70 extra per person, but like I said, having this ensures you will get on every single ride. And see every single show. Plus, you don’t have to wait in line. I don’t know about you, but for me the worst part about theme parks is waiting in line. Experience Universal Studios Hollywood to its fullest with Universal Express tickets!

5 Reasons I Love Kelly Thompson's Captain Marvel #1

As you likely already know, Carol Danvers has been one of my favorite characters in Marvel comics for a very long time. And even though I did NOT agree with her stance in Civil War II, I still love her.  The Life of Captain Marvel comic run just ended and dropped a couple major bombs. Carol has been through a lot lately, and has learned things that will effect her for a very long time to come. Captain Marvel #1 just came out this week, and picked up her story right where it left off. I read this comic through 5 times yesterday because it is THAT good. And here is why.

Warning: This post will contain minor spoilers for the comic book Captain Marvel #1. If you have not read it and wish to go in to it with fresh eyes, bookmark this post for a later date.

captain marvel 1 tony and carol banter

Tony/Carol Banter = Priceless

Oh how I have missed the Tony Stark and Carol Danvers banter. We got some here and there throughout The Life of Captain Marvel but there were pages upon pages of it in Captain Marvel #1. Quips that had me literally laughing out loud. I love them together. She hates him, I think he kind of likes her, and it is amazing. THEY are amazing.

captain marvel 1 hazmat

Hazmat Is Back

If you have never heard me talk about Avengers Academy, then you don’t come to my YouTube lives very often. It is by far one of my favorite series and I have been keeping my fingers crossed for them to hit the MCU at some point. Not likely to happen but I still want it. Well, Hazmat (from that series) showed up in this comic – in the most perfect way I might add – and I am SO EXCITED! Who knows, if some of this comic series ties in to the MCU, maybe she will too. Hey, a girl can dream, right?

captain marvel 1 rhodey and carol

Sparks Fly With Rhodey

If you are an avid comic book reader, you know that Carol and Rhodey were dating. Then Rhodey died (in Civil War II) – ouch! But now he is back, and Carol is back from space (and her sabbatical we read in The Life Of Captain Marvel). Sparks flew right through the pages when they saw each other again. Even Hazmat made a quick exit.

captain marvel 1 jessica drew and carol danvers

Girl Power with Spider-Woman

Jessica Drew, Spider-Woman, is Carol’s best friend. I love them together. Well they are reunited, and have a pretty awesome fight sequence, in the beginning of this issue. They battle side-by-side a Kraken type monster that I can only imagine is going to come up later. Somehow. At the end of the issue Jessica is MIA. I am sure that will be something we see in the future too.

captain marvel 1 cliff hanger

Major Cliff Hanger

There is ALWAYS a cliff hanger at the end of an issue in a continuing series. And I love that. I live for it. This cliff hanger? Incredible. I need to know ALL the things. That last page – the art? PHENOMENAL! I thought there was no way that Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel, could look any more badass or BE any more badass – but I might have to think again. Just what is going to happen? Who is she teaming up with? Where did she go? So many questions….I cannot wait for the next issue!

Yes, there is a lot going on in this issue, but there was a lot that needed to be addressed. Personally, I wanted to know if and how her relationships suffered in her absence. Carol really has been gone from NYC for a long time. First space, then for personal reasons. I am really looking forward to her story in this series!

Why Every Parent Should Watch Love, Simon (Spoiler Free Review)

1

This review is in no way sponsored. All opinions expressed are 100% my own.

love, simon poster

I finally got around to watching Love, Simon – I know, I know. It has been months since it came out but the timing never worked out. Now that I have seen it (twice because it was that good), I am ready to sing its praises to everyone. Love, Simon is a movie that every single parent should watch – no matter how accepting you are. If I had seen it before my top 10 list of 2018 movies was put out, it probably would have been in my top 5.

As you might already know, I have two young daughters. They are 6 and 7 years old, and if they come out as gay I will be 100% accepting of them. I mean, who cares right? They are still the same person. Which is one thing that Simon’s mother explains to him in Love, Simon. When she is telling him he is still the same brother, the same son… yea, I totally sobbed. I would hate for my girls to ever feel scared or nervous to come out to me or my husband. In the movie, Simon says his mom is ridiculously liberal and he knows she will be fine with it, but he is still not ready to do so.

Several times throughout Love, Simon, his father makes him feel uncomfortable. He says things that, had he known his son was gay, I am sure he never would have said. He just says them without thinking. When Simon does come out, he asks him which girlfriend of his made him gay (not the best response), which I think was just his way of trying to make light of the situation.

love simon friends

Overall Thoughts

Simon’s parents (and friends) are extremely accepting of Simon – as they should be. I want to keep this on the spoiler free side, so I will avoid mentioning some things, but I loved the ending of the film. I cried. Again, yeah I know. I think this movie has taught me to be even more accepting – as if that was possible? I watched the movie through Simon’s point of view at first, and through a suggestion of a friend, through the friends’ eyes the second time around. This is what I recommend because I feel like I learned a lot more that second time around.
