5 Tips for Visiting Hershey, PA with Three Generations!

Every year my mom comes to visit from Florida for a few weeks. When she does, we take her on a weekend trip or two. We have learned living in Upstate New York that there are actually many places to visit within driving distance – that are perfect weekend getaways. Hershey, PA is one of those places. There are so many things to do there – not just Hersheypark – that make it an ideal vacation for all three generations!

Hershey Chocolate World Tasting

Take Advantage of Chocolate World

You can easily spend a full day at Chocolate World, in fact, we have before. I highly recommend purchasing the package that includes all the activities to save money, plus, they are all worth doing! There is a chocolate tasting, where they teach you to taste chocolate like an expert, that my mom really enjoys. My daughters love the 4D mystery movie where they save the chocolate factory – and my favorite thing to do is create my own chocolate bar! Not to mention the free ride to discover how chocolate is made. Plus you can shop, shop, shop! And every activity ends with some free candy – you can’t beat that!

Drink and Eat All Day Deals in Hersheypark

Hersheypark itself has some great deals – including a senior discount you can take advantage of. But one of the best things to do is get a drink and/or an eat all day package. We purchase three cups for the drink all day deal and it works out really well – and saves us a ton of money! My daughters share one, my husband and I share one, and my mom has one for herself. One of the coolest parts (no pun intended) is that it can be used for slushies too! The eat all day deal works out well for the adults – although we have noticed our girls won’t use it as much as they should. But I am sure that will change in a few years!

Hersheypark kiddie rides

Split Up for Rides

My mom doesn’t do the big roller coasters, and my girls can’t yet. So since we had my mom with us, she took the girls to the tons of kiddie rides, and my husband and I enjoyed some thrilling coasters! The girls really enjoyed some Grandma time, and she loved hanging with them too. Of course, it was fun to be able to do the big coasters that we had not been able to do since the girls were born. I can’t wait to take them on them!

Local Restaurants

I always try to support local places and not chains – even when traveling. Well, Hershey has tons of them. In fact, our hotel gave us an awesome list when we checked in and every place we ate at was delicious. All of us loved Fenicci’s of Hershey so much that we have said we cannot wait to go back and eat there again. Yum!

hershey story chocolate flight

The Hershey Story Museum

The Hershey Story museum experience takes visitors on a journey through his life, his chocolate company, his generous philanthropic legacy and the town of Hershey, PA. Engaging museum exhibits explore Mr. Hershey’s early failures, how he successfully revolutionized the process of making milk chocolate, and how the orphan boys of the Hershey Industrial School became heirs to his fortune. One of the best parts of The Hershey Story museums? They have activities for kids to do so they don’t get bored, which we know can sometimes happen with little ones. My girls love the “I Spy” hunt, but there are other things for them to do as well. My personal favorite though is the hot chocolate flight! Yum!

Visit Hershey, PA with your WHOLE family! You won’t regret it!

An Open Response About James Gunn Being Let Go From Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

James Gunn Thor Ragnarok Red Carpet

Many friends, family members, and followers have asked me my thoughts on the news that James Gunn was removed from Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3. I took some time with my thoughts to reflect on how I truly feel. While this is a hard time for me, I have put together some words for you all.

You don’t have to look any further than my right arm to know that I’m a huge fan of Guardians of the Galaxy. I’ve been a fan of the comic books since I was a little girl, and I was skeptical about how it would be adapted for theaters. I was thrilled to see the version that James Gunn brought to the big screen in 2014. During the filming of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, I was lucky enough to visit the set and interview Gunn for the first time. I interviewed him again during Vol. 2’s press junket. During each encounter, I was impressed by his vision, his talent, and his kindness.

The news about his dismissal from Vol. 3 has broken my heart. I find his past tweets abhorrent, but I accept his apology for them and will choose to consider his more recent words and actions as indicative of his character at this time. It is up to each of you to choose to accept his apology or not for those tweets.

None of this changes my love of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I look forward to watching all of the upcoming films, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

It seems that those who know him well feel the same way. Just look at some of what his Guardians family is saying on Twitter.

We are Groot.

The Ultimate San Diego Comic-Con Survival Guide

1

ccibanner 2018 v1

Trust me, I wish more than anything that I was going to be attending San Diego Comic-Con this year. Unfortunately it falls at the same time as a really important family event, so I am going to have to miss it. The only thing that makes this OK for me is that I know Marvel is not going to be doing any panels there. It kind of makes it an OK year for me, as a huge Marvel fan, to miss. Although I know there will be some pretty amazing announcements from DC, Warner Bros, and so much more. But just let me think I won’t be missing anything. Please.

Comic-Con Survival Guide

Even though I won’t be there, I know that many of you lucky people out there will be. And I want to help you. Team Click sent me this pretty amazing comic-con survival guide that I knew I had to pass along to my readers. It is 52 pages packed with information on upcoming TV shows and films, exclusive toys, geek trivia and fun facts, and a BINGO game! Pretty much everything you need to survive all the waiting you have coming up over the next few days.

Unlike traditional San Diego Comic-Con guides with schedules & maps, this guide was designed to help decipher the myriad of genre installations, panels, bus/train/pedicab/building wraps, street teams, wandering talent, food trucks, and everything else that might overwhelm you at the year’s largest pop culture event! Download this to your phone or print it out, and you will be thankful you did! And even if you won’t be making it to SDCC, this is still a super fun guide! Trust me, I have been reading it myself. And we already know I won’t be there – don’t remind me.

My Favorites

As we already established, I will not be at SDCC this year. But that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy this guide. My favorite sections include how to speak geek, heroes of comic-con, and level up. If you play the included BINGO, you can win a Comic-Con Survival Kit from Team Click! It doesn’t get any better than that! Simply share on social for your chance to win fun prizes.

Story Time Is Changing As My Daughters Get Older Thanks to I Can Read! Books

This post is sponsored by HarperCollins. All opinions expressed are 100% my own.

Beat the summer slide with I Can Read Books

One of my favorite times with my daughters is story time. From the moment they were born, I would cuddle them and read to them. Well, times are now changing in the Smith household as both girls are reading to me at story time. Sure, I help out with a few words here and there, but they do the majority of the reading, all thanks to I Can Read! books. I would be lying if I said it doesn’t make me tear up every now and then. Them reading to me just proves that they are growing up, something I thought I was ready for, but I am not. For a chance to win I Can Read! books of your own, make sure you check out my giveaway at the end of the post.

Levels That Grow With Your Child

Something I really love about the I Can Read! books is that they grow with your child, just like story time, from My Very First level all the way up to Level 4, which is advanced reading. Currently, my 5 year old, who will be going to Kindergarten in the fall, is reading My First: Shared Reading and Level 1: Beginning Reading. I have been so proud watching her tackle words on her own and figure them out by looking at pictures and letters. I just cannot believe how well she is reading, and I swear it is because we started these books years ago. If you are beginning reading with your little one, here are 100 tips for beginning readers that just might help out.

Featuring Favorite & Well Known Characters

I am not exaggerating when I say we have a bookshelf filled with I Can Read! books. My girls are attracted to them because they always feature characters that they know and love. These stories surround Fancy Nancy, Splat the Cat, Pete the Cat, Danny the Dinosaur, Biscuit, the Berenstain Bears, and so many more. Honestly, I enjoy these stories as well. I loved reading them to her, and my heart swells as she reads them to me now. We laugh and giggle together when silly things happen – and we have both been known to tear up on occasion too. What can I say? We are sensitive girls.

Lorie’s Fave 5 I Can Read Books

As I said, my youngest daughter is blowing my mind with how well she is reading. I truly believe that a major part of her success is the fact that she enjoys the books she is reading. We have many I Can Read! books, but I asked her to select her five favorites to share with you guys. She got her top 3 no problem, but then had a hard time narrowing it down. She just kept saying she loves them all. After reading through a few, she finally settled on her favorites.

  • Biscuit Loves The Library
  • Fancy Nancy: The Dazzling Book Report
  • Little Critter: Just A Teacher’s Pet
  • Otter: Let’s Go Swimming
  • Splat the Cat: I Scream for Ice Cream

Prepare for School

My daughter is “so ready” for Kindergarten, but that doesn’t mean I am. I know I have to let her go but it is going to be tough. Since she has an older sister I know all too well about the summer slide. It is important to keep skills up over the school break – skills like reading. We have made a goal to read two books a day, and so far, we have stuck to it. I can see her confidence grow when she picks up a book and already knows most of the words. Sure, it is mostly memorizing, but isn’t that what reading is? Memorizing words.

i-can-read-DannyDino-scramble

Another way to prepare for school, or back to school depending what grade your little one is going in to, is to take advantage of free printables. These can be found a lot of places, but ICanRead.com is one of my favorite websites to go for them. What I like about these is they feature the same fun characters, they go along with the stories, and there is a wide variety of games like mazes and word searches.

About I Can Read Books

Widely recognized as the premier line of beginning readers, I Can Read! books are organized into color-coded levels. With hundreds of titles featuring award-winning authors and illustrators, and the most beloved character friends in the history of children’s literature, you can find books at every stage to engage and excite your child. Introduce children to the wonderful world of reading on their own with I Can Read!

Fighting Summer Learning Loss at The Strong Museum

This post is sponsored by The Strong museum and SheKnows Media.

Thank you to the STRONG Museum for hosting us for a fun filled (and educational!) day. All opinions expressed are 100% my own.

Fighting Summer Learning Loss

My daughters will be entering Kindergarten and Second Grade this September. I don’t mean to toot their horns here, but they are both smart girls. Their report cards this year had my husband and I beaming and prouder than I could have ever imagined. But I know all too well that the summer slump is real, so I feel it is important to keep their education up while they are out of school. One of our favorite local ways to do that is head to the ultimate play destination for all ages – The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York.

STRONG Museum

The last few years we were members, but we just let our membership lapse when my husband got a promotion at work, knowing we would not be able to make it out as often as we would like. The girls have really been missing it there so imagine their excitement when they found out that The Strong wanted to host us for a day of play!

STRONG Museum Wegmans check out

There are so many great activities for children of all ages there – last year we brought our 11-year-old niece and she still tells me how much fun she had. From a butterfly garden, to a working grocery store, to my personal favorite, a superhero exhibit, The Strong is truly a place for the entire family to have the best day of their lives!

Here are just a few of our personal favorite exhibits, but the museum has so much more to offer as well.

STRONG Museum Butterfly garden

Check Out The Butterfly Garden

For just a tiny upcharge you can visit the butterfly garden at The Strong National Museum of Play. This is one of the best butterfly gardens I have ever been to – no, scratch that, it is the best. We can’t visit the museum without checking it out.

There have been countless times that butterflies have landed on my daughters, on myself, and on my husband. Not to mention all the cocoons you can check out on the back wall, helping kids with science and the life cycle of the butterfly. This place is truly amazing and worth the few dollars it costs to add it on to your visit.

STRONG Museum Wegmans

Shop at Wegman’s

The first place my girls always rush to when we enter the museum is the Wegmans Super Kids Market. I have to admit, I always love playing in here too. Kids can grab their own shopping carts and go shopping. Literally. This mock-up store has a produce section, a meats section, a dairy section – everything you would expect to see in a real super market.

Each item has a barcode that can be scanned at checkout – kids will even get their own receipt (which we have a drawer full of at home because they never want to throw them away). Each child is only allowed 5 items at a time, which helps the little ones with counting. We also have our girls add up the cost themselves to keep their math skills going strong.

STRONG Museum Berenstein Bears

Explore with the Berenstain Bears

If you are looking for a way to keep your little ones’ imaginations sharp, the Berenstain Bears: Down a Sunny Dirt Road exhibit has tons of imaginative play options. Here, kids can be a dentist, a doctor, a cook, a waitress, a seamstress, and so much more.

I can’t tell you how long we had played at the jump rope game trying to beat each other’s scores. Kids here can also learn some money skills as they sell apples and plums at the fruit stand or sell meals at the Bear Family Restaurant. We always leave this section laughing and smiling.

STRONG Museum Superheros 1

Become Superheroes

You guys know me and my obsession with superheroes, so you know this is my favorite part of the museum. Here, you can test your strength after being hit by some Gamma Rays, climb up a building like Spidey, and read all about the origin of some of your favorite heroes.

Kids can also play dress up and walk high above the city skyline. We enjoy describing why they can do all of these things to our girls so that they understand the science behind it. Another great way to learn while having lots of fun!

STRONG Museum video games

Play Video Games

This is a close second for my favorite area because there are so many arcades and video games. Seriously, you can’t walk in there and not feel like a little kid again. I have spent way too much money reminiscing and playing games than I care to admit.

I just love showing my girls what it was like when I was young like them. We always read the plaques that talk about how video games started too. It is pretty educational for them, and honestly, my 7-year-old is so good at Pong, it is scary!

STRONG Museum for all ages

10 Fun Facts About Disney Junior’s New Show, Fancy Nancy!

Thank you to Disney Junior for setting up this awesome tea party and interview for me during the Ant-Man and The Wasp Event! All opinions expressed are 100% my own.

10 Fun Facts About Disney Junior's New Show, Fancy Nancy!

I remember when my daughters got their first Fancy Nancy book. It was a Halloween one and we must have read it at least ten times that night. They were immediately hooked on her and honestly, I can’t blame them. She is fun and spunky, just like they are. Not to mention her incredible sense of fashion! So when I heard that Disney Junior was going to have a Fancy Nancy show, I knew we would be tuning in for every episode! While in LA recently, I was lucky enough to watch two episodes as well as chat with Executive Producer/Director Jamie Mitchell and Story Editor Krista Tucker. Here are 10 fun facts about Disney Junior’s Fancy Nancy that I learned from this interview.

10 Fun Facts About Disney Junior's New Show, Fancy Nancy!

1. Disney Has Wanted the Rights for 10 Years

“This is a property that Disney had been interested in for about 10 years. The book had sat on Nancy Kanter‘s coffee table.” Krista Tucker told us. Jamie added that he knew there was a lot of interest in the property and in the end, Disney won. Yay!

2. Most of the Stories are Original

We’ve only adapted two of the books. Almost every story is original.” Krista let us know. I kind of love this idea because my daughters (and I) know the books inside and out. This will give us some fresh Fancy Nancy stories, and I cannot wait to see what Disney Junior has in store for us.

3. Bree and Nancy Argue

Jamie told us that “the dynamic between Bree and Nancy is critical to the series. They argue. They butt heads. Bree is not a pushover. It is a co-lead situation. When Nancy messes up or [comes off braggy], Bree is like, I am out of here. Inevitably, they always come back together at the end as friends. It is about that real kid dynamics, which I love.

4. Fancy Nancy Songs are Available on Spotify

Mia Sinclair Jenness is the voice of Fancy Nancy. Jamie told us that something about her stood out, “she understood how to deliver the comedic timing that was sort of beyond her years. And yet she brought an innocence to her character.” He also mentioned that her singing skills are remarkable, and she has already done about 25 songs for Disney Junior, which are available on Spotify.

5. Rob Riggle Came To Them Out Of Nowhere

He brings something to the character that is unique. Something we didn’t expect. He is a goofy dad, like me.” Jamie let us know. To me, Riggle seems like a strange cast, as he is usually not exactly an actor for children’s shows. But I must admit, he totally works as Nancy’s father.

6. We Might See Fancy Nancy in the Disney Parks

How amazing would it be to see Fancy Nancy in the Disney Parks? “I can’t really speak to that because I don’t know for sure, but I can imagine seeing her walking around. I think it would be cool to see her walking around. Sofia is walking around down there, so I can imagine.” I know that my girls would flip out and love to meet her, so fingers crossed!

7. There is Humor for Adults too

There were several moments throughout the episodes that we watched when most of us laughed out loud. We asked if that was on purpose, and Krista let us know it was, “We know that co-viewing is very important for our audience and their families.” Jamie added in, “I like shows that the parent might hear it and get a kick out of it as well. I think it is important that it is inclusive watching.

8. Fancy Nancy’s Animation is Complex

Jamie let us know that creating a cartoon is very challenging now because of high definition and 4K televisions. “With hi-def in particular, every flaw is visible. If you play Snow White on HD, it is pretty tough on there because it is not built in that format. But because we know the format so well having just come through 7 years of Sofia we know the technology very well. We know the criteria we need to hit. The only way to do it properly is to completely go for it.

9. Fancy Nancy Lives on a Cul-de-Sac (on Purpose)

The Cul-de-sac was designed specifically so that it would be a safe environment for the kids to ride around in. One of my favorite episodes comping up – there is a tree in the center of the cul-de-sac named Oakie. One of the twins goes up in the tree, falls, and sprains her arm. So the parents decide this is going to be off limits for the kids. The kids decide that’s not acceptable so they become revolutionaries led by Nancy.” Jamie explained. He even let us know this storyline was Les Miserables inspired.
