May 2015 Geek Fuel

Geek Fuel is currently my favorite subscription box. It is always filled with perfectly geek, nerd, gamer related items. I just keep getting more and more impressed with them. One of my favorite things about Geek Fuel is that every month they include an exclusive shirt. The May 2015 box was great! The T-Shirt was cute, but I am not huge in to Doctor Who (gasp, I know) so it looks like I have some catching up to do before I can fully appreciate it. Along with the shirt came a “concert ticket stub”. On June 1st, Geek Fuel will be announcing the winner of a Doctor Who themed mystery box! I love that they do fun promotions like this all the time – last month several of their members received free tickets to go see Avengers! I was excited to see that I was featured in the Geek Fuel Magazine this month! My subscription is up and I am trying to decide if I will be renewing it or not. Most likely, I will be.

My favorite item in this month’s box (besides the magazine of course) is the Plants vs. Zombies 2 collectible mystery pins. I love mystery collectibles. It is so fun opening up a package and not knowing what you are going to get inside. I got some pretty awesome pins – 2 plants and 2 zombies – and I plan to buy some more and try to complete the set. Another really cool thing that came in this month’s box was the Geek Fuel slap koozie. Yes, it is exactly what you are thinking. It is a slap bracelet that is a koozie for drinks. I know I will be using it a lot this summer.

Every month there is a downloadable game code. This month it was for Square Heroes and it came with a tattoo sheet. I have really wanted to try out this game so I am pretty excited about this code. I cannot wait to try it out. There was also a Yoda “The Force” poster by Terribly Odd that I plan to hang up in my office area. It is super cute – I love Yoda!. The final item in the May 2015 Geek Fuel box is the Secret Wars #1 Variant Cover. I love Marvel Comics and I have been excited to read Secret Wars for a while now. I am thrilled to be adding this comic to my collection! This was another great month for Geek Fuel! I highly recommend this subscription box if you are into anything geeky!

If you subscribe to Geek Fuel using this link you will receive a free item. So if you are planning to sign up, why not sign up here.

Disclosure: Mama Smith’s Review Blog received this item in exchange for her honest review. All opinions expressed are 100% hers.

Disney Party Book

If you are looking to plan the ultimate Disney or Disney-Pixar Themed Party – then I have the book for you. Fittingly titled, The Ultimate Disney Party Book from EDDA USA, is filled with ideas to make your favorite Disney movies come to life! Just browsing through this book filled me with wonder. Not to mention my daughters squealing as I turned the pages. My oldest turns 4 next month and she wanted every party theme in this book.

Toy Story Themed Party      Aladdin Themed Party

The Ultimate Disney Party Book has 8 chapters, each based on a different party theme: Aladdin, Disney Princess, Toy Story, Mickey and Minnie, Monsters, Inc., Wreck-It Ralph, Planes, and Captain Hook. There are over 65 recipes and craft ideas in the book, all accompanied with beautifully detailed photos. I try really hard to be crafty and good at baking but those are not things I excel at – and this book made me quite confident in my ability to make these things. It also includes several pages of templates in the back to help.

Wreck-It Ralph Themed Party   Monsters Inc Themed Party   Monsters Inc Themed Party

This book is perfect for any parent or Disney fanatic. Impress your guests right off the bat with customized Disney themed invitations like Woody’s Cowboy Vest or the Mickey Mouse Glove Invitation. Blow them out of the water with treats like Vanellope’s Race Car Brownies and Randall Boggs Blueberry Smoothies. And don’t forget the fun of the games such as Stomp & Save and Dance of Aces. I love that the game instructions are very detailed – and also tell you how many guests each game is good for. There are even grocery lists to help you shop for your special occasion. No matter which theme you choose, The Ultimate Disney Party Book is your perfect partner for throwing a magical party.

Movie Story:

Do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head? Disney•Pixar’s original new film “Inside Out” ventures inside the mind to find out.

Based in Headquarters, the control center inside 11-year-old Riley’s mind, five Emotions are hard at work, led by lighthearted optimist Joy (voice of Amy Poehler), whose mission is to make sure Riley stays happy. Fear (voice of Bill Hader) heads up safety, Anger (voice of Lewis Black) ensures all is fair and Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) prevents Riley from getting poisoned—both physically and socially. Sadness (voice of Phyllis Smith) isn’t exactly sure what her role is, and frankly, neither is anyone else.

When Riley’s family relocates to a scary new city, the Emotions are on the job, eager to help guide her through the difficult transition. But when Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley’s mind—taking some of her core memories with them—Fear, Anger and Disgust are left reluctantly in charge. Joy and Sadness must venture through unfamiliar places—Long Term Memory, Imagination Land, Abstract Thought and Dream Productions—in a desperate effort to get back to Headquarters, and Riley.

Cooking with Lee Kum Kee

Disclosure: Mama Smith’s Review Blog received this item in exchange for her honest review. All opinions expressed are 100% hers.

Lee Kum Kee Sauces

My family and I love Chinese food. My husband actually did some cooking for a Chinese restaurant at one point in his life so we take advantage of that a lot. We love homemade sweet and sour chicken, fried rice, beef and broccoli – you name it, we love it! I was recently lucky enough to receive some Lee Kum Kee Chinese Sauces and we couldn’t wait to break them open!

Lee Kum Kee Sauces

The great thing about Lee Kum Kee Sauces is that they have Panda Brand Ready Sauces. With these you take the mystery out of cooking authentic Asian food. Just open them up and mix with the meat and veggies of your dish! We tried the Orange Chicken and it was perfection! These have no high fructose corn syrup or artificial flavoring. They are cholesterol-free and have zero grams of trans fat! They make adding some Asian flare to dinner easy and delicious!

Lee Kum Kee Sauces

Their sauces are also amazing and they go a long way – just add a little bit while cooking and get a burst of flavor. I was able to try out the Hoisin Sauce, Siracha Chili Sauce, Siracha Mayo, and Siracha Chili Ketchup! The mayo and ketchup are perfect for easily adding some spice to a turkey sandwich or burger. I think these sauces will make a great addition to any family get together this summer!

Niagara Falls Comic Con June 2015

Niagara_Falls_Comic_Con

I have always wanted to go to a comic convention. I hate that I never have – I feel like I am not a worthy enough geek/nerd/gamer. But soon that will all change! The Niagara Falls Comic Con is coming to town and with that only being a few hours drive from us – we are heading that way. I am so excited because the lineup is amazing – David Hasselhoff, Sean Aston, Scott Wilson, Billy Dee Williams – it goes on and on. Now, I have to leave somewhat early on June 7th to head to LA (read about that press trip here) but we plan to spend all day Saturday at the convention.

The Niagara Falls Comic Con has it all – from amazing celebrities, to awesome panels, to game tournaments! The games will be played on Saturday and Sunday and include Magic: The Gathering Mana Deprived Super Series, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokemon, and more. As for the panels I know that we plan to attend the Billy Dee Williams Q&A on Friday (if we make it up in time), the Sean Aston Q&A, and of course, the Marvel Comics Panel with Leonard Kirk & Marco Rudy! It was a tough choice between the Marvel Comics Panel and the History of Video Gaming Panel but they are at the same time. Darn! The full celebrity list is amazing. I will list it at the bottom of this post. They even have Photo Ops – and GET THIS – you can take a photo with  Margot Kidder at Niagara Falls on Friday – anyone seen Superman II?! How amazing is that! It is at 11am on Friday and I am crossing my fingers that my husband can secure the day off work. (This is a ticketed event.) As if that wasn’t even enough, there will be an arcade game room, comics and memorabilia for sale, photo ops with  Kit, the Batcopter, the stormtroopers, and SO MUCH MORE! I am counting down the days guys – I cannot wait to go – and share my experience with you! If you are going too – let me know!

Make sure you follow me on Instagram and Twitter because I will be posting tons of photos and updates while at the convention on Saturday, June 6th. I will be posting about it the following week as well – most likely after my return from LA.

Have you ever been to a comic convention? Tell me about it in the comments!

Fontina Macaroni & Cheese Recipe – Low Carb Approved!

Disclosure: Mama Smith’s Review Blog received this item in exchange for her honest review. All opinions expressed are 100% hers.

Tuttorosso

I grow my own tomatoes in the spring/summer and then can them. Even though I try to figure out how many I need for the fall/winter – I always seem to run out. When this happens, I turn to Tuttorosso. They have a wide variety of tomatoes and they are always delicious. I personally love using the diced tomatoes in my tacos. They taste really fresh and it is really easy to just open up a can and add them. This is also a really good base for homemade traditional salsa. Their website has lots of recipes that you can follow – or use for inspiration!

Low Carb Baked Macaroni and Cheese

My favorite recipe is the Fontina Macaroni and Cheese.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces ziti pasta, cooked and drained
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups whipping cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3 ounces light cream cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Fontina cheese
  • 1 (28 ounce) can Tuttorosso® Diced Tomatoes in rich tomato juice, drained
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup panko (Japanese) breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400o F. In a large saucepan melt butter over medium-high heat. Add garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Whisk in flour and cook the roux (butter-flour mixture) for 1 minute. Add the cream, nutmeg and cream cheese and whisk to combine. Bring to a simmer and whisk until the mixture is thick and smooth.
  2. Stir in the Fontina cheese and diced tomatoes in rich tomato juice; whisk until smooth.
  3. Add the pasta to the cheese mixture and stir to coat. Season with salt and black pepper and put into a large buttered casserole dish. In a small bowl combine panko and Parmesan cheese; sprinkle on top of macaroni. Drizzle with olive oil.
  4. For creamy baked mac and cheese, place under the broiler for 2 to 3 minutes, watch carefully. You want the top to toast, but no burn. For a more traditional firm baked mac and cheese, bake for 20 minutes until the top is golden.
  5. Remove from oven and sprinkle with parsley and serve warm.

MARIAH CAREY – #1 To Infinity

Disclosure: Mama Smith’s Review Blog received this item in exchange for her honest review. All opinions expressed are 100% hers.

Mariah Carey

Today (May 18) Mariah Carey’s new album, #1 to Infinity, hit stores everywhere – and I was lucky enough to receive a copy. I have loved Mariah for many years. I remember dancing to “Always Be My Baby” with my first boyfriend (wow, I feel old now) and making that our song. She has such an incredible voice and listening to her really takes me back. I could listen to her sing all day.

I just finished listening to this album and I was blown away. Of course, it has all my favorite Mariah songs and I could not be any happier. I would love to see her live in Las Vegas – or anywhere for that matter- fingers crossed! Mariah Carey #1 To Infinity gathers – for the first time ever – one career-spanning chronological collection of all 18 of her Billboard Hot 100 #1 singles (17 self-penned), more than any solo artist in history. Included as the final track on the collection is Mariah’s breathtaking new single, “Infinity” (co-written and produced by Mariah). Below is the track list for this album.

FanGirl Friday: Avengers Age of Ultron

3

Avengers

Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that Avengers: Age of Ultron came out in theaters two weeks ago. It banked over $187 million opening weekend and I am not surprised. If you have not gone to see it yet – WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!? Sorry for yelling, I just cannot believe that there are people in this world that have not yet seen this incredible movie. I was lucky enough to go to an early showing at my local movie theater the day before it came out. I saw it in 3D and plan to go back and see it again – this time in 3D IMAX. This movie is HUGE – right from the beginning you are thrown in to a battle. Talk about action! I promise, this is a spoiler free zone but I will vaguely point out some things I loved about Avengers: Age of Ultron (besides the stellar cast of course).

Hawkeye

Hawkeye

Hawkeye (Clint Barton) is one of my favorite Avengers. I read the comic books and I have loved him for a long time. He is one of my favorite Marvel characters – and I have thought about getting a Hawkeye/Mockingbird tattoo. My husband and I went with Rogue & Gambit – another awesome Marvel couple – but Hawkeye was on the table for quite some time. I love that they really brought him out in this film. Jeremy Renner is an awesome Hawkeye. He does great things for the character. He had some great one liners like “None of this makes sense.” and has a lot of comic relief in the film – as he does in the comic books. I promise I did not give anything away! I was so pleased to see him a lot more in this film and I am crossing my fingers for him to get his own movie!

Avengers

Differences from the Comics

I must admit, I was a little nervous going in to this film. There are certain characters that are introduced in a totally different way than in the comics. I understand this is because of pesky film rights (Universal has the right to the X-Men, and so I assume Magneto – who is Wanda & Pietro Maximoff’s father) so I knew they were going to be brought in differently. But I must say, I didn’t hate it. I am a stickler for the comics so continuity issues sometimes really annoy me. I think this was really well done and I loved these characters. Keep up the good work Disney! I never should have doubted you.

Captain America Civil War

Setting Us Up

As a comic book reader I can tell you that we have a lot of awesomeness in store for us. Now, I know Captain America: Civil War (which just started production!! – read more about that here) will not go down exactly like the comics but I KNOW there will be rifts, action, and someone – well someone just might – AHHHH OK, no spoilers – it is going to be good though. I can promise you that is going to be amazing. We already have seen that Tony Stark and Steve Rogers are not seeing eye to eye – and they have introduced Crossbones – OK, OK, I will stop! Just get ready for a wild ride guys. Get ready.

I leave you on this note – SEE THIS MOVIE!
