The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 has premiered with three episodes, and it is clear this is going to be an emotional one.

My babies are officially back, and oh, how I have missed them! After what felt like an absolute eternity of waiting, Prime Video has finally dropped the three-episode premiere of The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4, and my inner geek is screaming. Following the earth-shattering chaos of the Chroma Conclave arc, I wasn’t entirely sure where the narrative would take us next. However, kicking things off a full year down the road proved to be a stroke of storytelling genius.
Seeing the party entirely separated at the start of Episode 1 broke my heart a little, but it gave us a beautiful, grounded look at how these characters function outside of an active war zone. Percy and Vex are holding down the fort in Whitestone, navigating the complicated transition into domesticity and rebuilding.
Meanwhile, Pike and Grog are living their best lives, traveling around the realm and doing exactly what they do best: drinking themselves silly in local taverns. Then we have Keyleth and Vax, who have been spending their time finishing up her grueling Aramente.
The emotional payoff arrives swiftly in Episode 2 when Keyleth officially completes her leadership trials. I had actual tears in my eyes watching her step into her full power. She has come such a long way from the insecure druid we met in Season 1, and I couldn’t possibly be any prouder.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Vox Machina without a massive, dramatic shakeup. Right from the opening minutes, there is a giant, flamboyant hole in my heart because Scanlan Shorthalt is absolutely nowhere to be found. But the universe doesn’t leave his spot empty for long. Enter Taryon Darrington, voiced by the legendary Wayne Brady.
When Taryon first strutted onto the screen with his golden armor and his mechanical companion Doty, I found him incredibly annoying. But honestly? Thanks to Brady’s impeccable comedic timing and underlying charm, he is quickly growing on me. He brings a totally different, hilarious dynamic to the group’s rough-around-the-edges energy.
What truly sets this premiere apart for me, though, are the incredible hidden details. The animators at Titmouse love the fandom, and it shows. I practically shrieked when I spotted a sneaky Critical Role logo stamped onto the very bottom of a tavern mug! And don’t even get me started on the scene in Whitestone where one of the local nobles is explicitly addressed as “Lord Mercer” – a brilliant, well-deserved nod to the master DM himself, Matthew Mercer.
Everything beautifully builds toward Episode 3, where the team finally comes back together for Keyleth’s official coronation as the Voice of the Tempest. The joy of seeing them all in one room again was unmatched, even if Scanlan is still missing in action.
Unfortunately, in classic fashion, the party is completely crashed by a terrifying, dark cult. The ensuing fight sequence features some of the most gorgeous, fluid animation and brutal action choreography the show has ever produced. The stakes hit dangerously close to home when Keyleth’s dad gets severely injured in the melee, reminding us that a sinister new threat is looming over Exandria.
Ultimately, The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 premiere is an absolute triumph. I am so thrilled this show is back, and I am entirely buckled in for the rest of the season!
