We Live In Time Review: Andrew Garfield & Florence Pugh Shine

0

We Live In Time features two incredible performances by Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, who are absolutely adorable together.

We Live In Time review

It should come as no surprise that both Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh deliver incredible performances in We Live In Time. They are adorable together with chemistry that is off the charts. While I understand why the film jumps around in time, I feel that it does not do the story any favors, creating confusion and disconnect at times.

The film follows the love story of Almut (Florence Pugh) and Tobias (Andrew Garfield) after they are brought together by chance. They are forced to deal with the limits of time, learning to treasure every moment they have together.

We Live In Time review

We Live In Time heavily focuses on the concept of enjoying quality time with those you love while you can. It is a tearjerker and one that is sure to stick with many viewers long after the credits roll. Garfield and Pugh are adorable together, making it difficult not to root for them, however, the non-chronological order of the film does take away from the audience’s connection to them.

I appreciate what the movie is trying to do by making this decision, but believe that it would have been more impactful if it played out in chronological order. Because the events of the relationship are jumbled, the timeline itself sometimes becomes confusing. There are also moments when viewers are completely on this journey with Pugh and Garfield but then are ripped away from it as they are catapulted into another moment in time, leaving them wanting more.

We Live In Time review

That said, We Live In Time does a beautiful job of showcasing the importance of taking advantage of every moment. Life is short and we never know how much time we truly have. It is important to appreciate what we have, and those that we love.

While it certainly has its issues, We Live In Time tells a beautiful story about two individuals who are deeply in love. Following their journey, though confusing at times, is heartwarming and thought-provoking. It is hard to imagine what you would do in their shoes, and to see them actually struggle with decisions and taking the time to do what is right for them, is relatable and inspiring.

We Live In Time review

Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh do what they can with what they are given. They both shine in their performances and have great chemistry. The only disconnect viewers will have with their relationship comes from the decision to follow their story in a non-chronological order.

I fully believe that if We Live In Time did not actually jump through time, it would have a larger impact on audiences as a whole. Or, if they wanted to continue this route, they should have stuck with it and made the ending the beginning. Which is all I can say without giving spoilers away. I would love to see Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh on screen together again in the future.

We Live In Time comes to theaters everywhere on October 11.

Brenna D’Amico Compares Her Adjoining & Descendants Characters

0

Brenna D’Amico is like you have never seen in the horror short, Adjoining. In this interview, she compares that character to her Descendants’ Jane.

Brenna D'Amico Interview Adjoining

Brenna D’Amico, who is well known for her role as Jane in Disney’s Descendants franchise, is turning the tables with her new role as Milly in Adjoining. While we do not want to divulge much about the horror short in order to keep the twists and turns a secret, just know that D’Amico’s performance is incredible.

Adjoining synopsis: A couple’s motel stay takes a chilling turn when they discover they’re being observed, leading to unexpected consequences. Adjoining is a nostalgic take on our current societal fears of privacy, always being watched or recorded.

Brenna D'Amico Interview Adjoining

Brenna D’Amico Had A Lot Of Fun Filming Adjoining

Tessa Smith: What was it that drew you to Adjoining? And how fun was it to play Milly?

Brenna D’Amico:  When [Peter Roumeliotis] brought it to me, I read it and he asked me who I could see myself as, and I was like, Milly. I was like, I think I can really sink into the over the top aspect of her. I would love to play her. She just seems so fun and twisted.

I was having a blast. I got into the mindset, maybe it’s cause I’m a little twisted as a human too. Not, to the extent of her, but I was like, you know what? I gotta not judge her. I gotta find why she loves what she does. Her being the slam poet that brings the good vibes. It was definitely a really fun one to do.

Brenna D'Amico Interview Adjoining

The Adjoining Cast Works Extremely Well Together

Tessa Smith: Can you talk about finding the right dynamic with the other two actors, Carter Glade and Sid Noelle?

Brenna D’Amico:  I’m so happy that we had the privilege of being so close. I got to bring Carter Gladen, who I’ve known for years. We have certain scenes together that are, not the most, everybody thinks like, oh, kissing scenes, whatever, being in a couple with somebody, it’s not always the most comfortable when you’re on set, even though a lot of people think differently, but being friends with him, and being able to talk about it a little bit before doing some of the excessive smooching was definitely needed because they are in your face kind of people. They are that. We want people to be uncomfortable by the intimacy at times. So having that conversation and just working with somebody that has your back and is so comfortable, was definitely great.

And then Sid, I just met when we got there and she’s incredible. We wanted to talk a little bit about how our characters were with each other, but we kind of wanted to leave it a mystery for both of us. So we could keep that mystery aspect.

Brenna D'Amico Compares Her Adjoining & Descendants Characters

Jane “Would Run Away Crying” If She Was In Adjoining

Tessa Smith: Jane, your Descendants character is very different.

Brenna D’Amico:  Jane would never. Can you imagine? That’s another movie. I feel like she would run away crying.

Tessa Smith: Can you talk about your experience on the Descendants films?

Brenna D’Amico: I had the best childhood ever, I really did, because of it. I’m so grateful. It still feels very surreal for me to be a part of that franchise. But it was just the best. Everybody says, oh my gosh, we were a family. The cliche, but it’s true. We loved each other all so much. A lot of us still talk. Little memories on my phone pop up of filming Descendants and I watch them all the way through every time. I love listening to the music still, as well. But it was amazing. It feels almost like a dream.

Be sure to check out our full interview with Brenna D’Amico to learn more about her new horror short, Adjoining.

Adjoining is premiering at Screamfest LA 2024 on October 12.

Starring actress Brenna D’Amico, known for her work in the critically acclaimed Disney franchise Descendants, we can guarantee that audiences will watch Brenna shine in a way people have yet to see. Carter Glade joins our cast, from Blumhouse’s Freaky, and Sid Noelle who deliver equally terrifying performances.

Adjoining co-directors, Dakota Daulby and Harrison Houde, who brought the film to life, are no strangers to horror. As actors, both have starred in notable projects: Dakota alongside Maika Monroe in this year’s most anticipated horror film Longlegs, and Harrison in the 2018 film Summer of ’84 and Netflix’s Dead Boys Detectives series released in April of this year.

The film is shot by Andy Chen who has been making headlines with his short horror fan film The Spider starring The Walking Dead’s Chandler Riggs.

This is also an exciting time for executive producer Peter Roumeliotis as Popternative is officially branching out its production and content offerings with films under Popternative Pictures. The Rule of Jenny Pen Review: Filled With Ups & Downs

0

Both Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow go for it in The Rule of Jenny Pen. It’s chilling and intense at times, but I just wanted something more.

The Rule of Jenny Pen review

When I saw that Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow were going to be in a movie together, I was thrilled. The Rule of Jenny Pen sounds interesting enough and I went into it with high hopes because these are two of my favorite actors. Perhaps that was my downfall because unfortunately, despite two phenomenal lead performances, I do not have many good things to say about this film.

I wanted so badly to enjoy it, but not only is it uncomfortable to watch at times (and not in a good way), it is extremely slow-paced. Don’t get me wrong, it has its moments, but they are too few and far between to make the movie enjoyable.

When Stefan (Geoffrey Rush) has a stroke, he is sent to an elderly rehabilitation center. This is where he meets Dave (John Lithgow) and several others. Dave has a bizarre connection to a puppet, whom he has named Jenny Pen.

He uses her to be mean and horrible to the other residents, something he gets away with constantly because the orderlies do not witness it – or perhaps they just do not care. This becomes extremely frustrating to watch, as it is unbelievable that he could get away with this for so long without any consequences.

The biggest downfall of The Rule of Jenny Pen is that there is no twist. I kept waiting for a major twist to come along, as the suspense was there, as were what I thought were multiple set-ups, however, one never came. The ending is surprising and exciting, but it is too little too late to save the movie, unfortunately.

That said, Lithgow and Rush give their everything in The Rule of Jenny Pen. I have always thought of Lithgow as lovable and fun, like in 3rd Rock From The Sun, but in this movie he is terrifying and cruel. Perhaps that was too unsettling for me, even though it is a testament to his range.

Elder abuse is something that is hard for me to watch, and it is used excessively in this movie, which I understand but do not appreciate. It comes from Dave himself, but also seems to come from the orderlies who look the other way.

There are certainly some enjoyable moments, especially the twisted ones that happen after hours, but the movie never fully goes for it, and never fully gets there. I understand what the filmmakers were going for, but sadly, The Rule of Jenny Pen is a miss for me.

Caddo Lake Review: A Twisted & Thrilling Mystery

0

Caddo Lake, starring Dylan O’Brien and Eliza Scanlen, is a thought-provoking and twisted mystery that will keep you guessing until the end.

Caddo Lake movie review

You know those movies that are nearly impossible to speak about without spoiling them in one way or another? That is how I feel about Caddo Lake. There is so much to unpack in this film, that it is hard to expand on simple thoughts.

This movie is fantastic. It is very well done. It boasts incredible actors. And it will keep viewers guessing until the very end. Speaking of which, the end itself will be divisive but I, personally, am a big fan of what they did.

Caddo Lake movie review

When an eight-year-old girl disappears, a series of events, conversations, and revelations alter a broken family’s history. Eagle-eyed viewers will be able to put some pieces of the puzzle together early on, but I assure you, they actually have no idea what is yet to come.

It does not take long for the first twist to be revealed, which in turn, truly helps keep the film moving along at a decent pace. Thanks to the brilliant writing, directing, and acting, everything comes together beautifully to create something that is sure to be conversation starter for anyone who has seen it.

Caddo Lake movie review

That said, there are times when Caddo Lake feels like a slow burn, but those are few and far between. And there is always, always a payoff that makes those fleeting moments well worth it.

Both Dylan O’Brien and Eliza Scanlen go on quite the journey throughout the film. Their paths are different, but similar, which will in turn likely cause the audience to look inward and think about what is most important to them.

Caddo Lake movie review

The reason Caddo Lake works as well as it does is because viewers are going to constantly be trying to figure out what exactly is happening. The film features a pretty big mystery at the center of it, however, we really cannot dive more into that without giving anything away.

Caddo Lake movie review

Caddo Lake is thrilling, exciting, intriguing, surprising, and exhilarating. There are multiple twists and turns that will keep viewers fully engaged as they put the puzzle pieces together. This is one that will not soon be forgotten – and is likely to be even better upon a second watch.

Be sure to watch our interview with Caddo Lake writers and directors Logan George and Celine Held to learn about their inspiration behind the film, bringing on Dylan O’Brien, and much more.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Is Already Making Me Feel Things

0

The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 is only three episodes in and yet, it has already sent me on an emotional roller coaster I will never recover from.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Review

The Legend of Vox Machina holds a special place in my heart for many reasons. Not only are the extremely talented and creative people behind the series some of the nicest human beings to ever walk the earth, this show has given something to my family that I can never pay back.

My children have been interested in tabletop role-playing games for as long as I can remember. And while I was as well, finding the time to commit to something like this can be difficult. After watching The Legend of Vox Machina, and then finding myself deep diving into the Critical Role YouTube Channel and binging the campaign videos, I decided to pull the trigger.

I am so thankful that I did, as playing a campaign with my family and friends has not only brought us closer, it has created memories that we will never forget – and we are only a handful of sessions in. We are truly having a blast, and I have to give Critical Role at least a little bit of the credit.

All of that is to say that I have felt a strong connection to these characters because of that. I love them dearly and only want what is best for them. Even though I know how some storylines play out, watching them come to life in animated form is a whole new experience, and I have loved it with every fiber of my being.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Review

The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 is officially here, with three episodes that sent me on an emotional roller coaster from the start. The team is going through it, which caused me to go through it. Thordak is out for blood, and Vax sure seems to be in quite a bit of trouble at the start of season 3. After jumping back in time, we learn that there was a backup plan and thankfully, he is going to be ok – well, as ok as he can be anyway.

We may have already known that Anna Ripley was hot on their tail, but to actually see it (and see Orthax alongside her – or should I say inside of her) is a whole other thing. It raises the stakes even higher because now Vox Machina is dealing with multiple outside threats. And a couple of inside threats as well.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Review

Vax. Vax. Vax. You cannot let yourself have happiness, can you? In The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 episode 1, Keyleth and Vax kiss and it is electric. Keyleth admits she is new to it, but you can read it all over her face, that girl is smitten. But the Matron of Ravens has other plans and disrupts the romantic moment with a vision of Keyleth all alone at the grave of her teammates. Which, to be fair, we all know is a possibility because she is likely to outlive them all. But it spooks Vax. Rightfully (and annoyingly) so.

This causes him to break things off with an already frustrated Keyleth in episode 3 of season 3. The poor girl can get no one to listen to her, and now she is getting love ripped away from her. It truly is not fair.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Review

As if this wasn’t enough to cause me to spiral, Vax telling Keyleth that they cannot be together happens while Vex is showing Percy that… well… that they CAN be together, if you know what I mean. This is a brilliant editing decision that is going to leave fans with their emotions all over the place.

The sequence is sexy and spicy (ha, no pun intended). It is also exciting because it is impossible not to ship these two couples. One couple is going through an incredibly difficult time while the other is busy finally taking the time to explore… things. Then, immediately following, just to top it off, Scanlan tries to kiss Pike (because he is also going through it) and is turned away.

To say that The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 has hit the ground running is an understatement. There is a lot happening and it is making me feel things. So many emotions are coursing through my body that I do not even know how to handle them. One thing is for sure, I love this show. So f*cking much.

House of Spoils Review: Blends Witchy & Culinary Vibes

0

House of Spoils is a great combination of culinary and witchy, but not a perfect blend. Still, Ariana DeBose once again proves how talented she is.

House of Spoils Review

I have to admit, I went into House of Spoils expecting something like The Menu. Not exactly like it, but certainly not like what I was given – and that is a good thing. Ariana DeBose once again proves just how talented she is, as she takes on the role of Chef. A movie that is a little bit witchy and a lot bit empowering, House of Spoils will certainly keep viewers entertained.

When a young Chef is given the chance to realize her dream and open her own restaurant, she leaps at it. The concept is unique, as the restaurant will be inside of an old house, that she will also be living in. The first chef backed out and even though she is unsure why, she is not going to lose out on a chance to make her dream come true.

It doesn’t take long after moving into the house for her to realize something is strange about it. Is it all in her head or is there a presence that is trying to tell her something? More is revealed as the movie goes on, and it will likely end up in a place that you will never expect.

House of Spoils Review

As with most culinary movies, there are lot of close foods shots and scenes of people eating. This is the part that is similar to The Menu, which remains one of my favorite films of all time. The cinematography choices elevate the film, boarding the line between delicious and disgusting.

The biggest issue with this film is the disconnect between the culinary aspect and the witch aspect at first. It takes a while for them to truly connect and blend together in a way that make sense in the film, but once they do, there is no looking back. While the beginning of the movie does showcase what is to come in terms of the witchiness, it almost feels as if it was an afterthought. Like someone realized there was a disconnect and tried to fix it. Still, I cannot be that mad at it as I really enjoyed the film overall.

While there are some moments that do not work, there is a long list of things that do. DeBose and Barbie Ferreira make a great team and are a complete joy to watch on screen. There is no doubt that this movie is about female empowerment at its core, which is something I can absolutely get behind. The final sequence had me cheering, as well as wishing this was a real place I could visit. No spoilers, but you will know exactly what I mean when you see it.

House of Spoils Fantastic Fest 2024

House of Spoils is funny, entertaining, exciting, scary, and empowering. I know that is quite the combination of adjectives but watch the movie and try to tell me I am wrong. I love the major twist and how it plays out. The way that it is revealed is smart, and clearly a testament to the brilliant writing, directing, cinematography, and acting. It could have easily been a mess, but instead it becomes one of the most unforgettable moments of the film.

Ariana DeBose gives her all in this role, something she repeatedly does with her performances. There is no doubt that she is a talent, and I truly enjoy watching her on screen. Seeing her embrace herself, truly embrace herself, in the third act of this movie is something that will stick with me for a long time. It empowered me, and I hope it empowers many others. Don’t let anyone tell you who you are or what to do, be you and be completely comfortable in it, and you will be just fine.

Be sure to check out our interviews with star Ariana DeBose and writers/directors Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy to learn more about House of Spoils.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Review: It’s Perfect

0

The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 continues the trend of perfect seasons from this series. Stakes are high, sending viewers on an emotional roller coaster.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Review

The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 catapults fans into a heart-pounding, high-stakes, emotional roller coaster of a season from the very first episode. It has been a while since season 2 and Critical Role wastes no time giving us what we have been craving. We have all come to know and love these characters, we are invested, we want what is best for them, and we never, ever, want to see them get hurt. Season 3 is going to do something to a lot of viewers, and not all of it will be good.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Review

Vox Machina is still picking apart the Chroma Conclave. They have done damage, but they still have worthy foes to go up against. Thordak (voiced by the late, great Lance Reddick) is one of the toughest opponents they have come across so far, and he is going to give them a run for their money this season. The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 boasts some of the most incredible action sequences of the series, as they perfectly deliver a high-stakes feel.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Review

But Thordak is not the only thing issue that Vox Machina is going to have to deal with. We know that romances have been blossoming, but certain people are holding back (these twins need therapy, y’all). Some of the most gutwrenching scenes in season 3 are because of these relationships, and not because of the big baddies Vox Machina is going up against.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Review

Have no fear, though, there are certainly some spicy moments to counteract the struggles and stubbornness. We know these characters so well by now that The Legend of Vox Machina is able to fully dive into the development of their relationships, exploring the good, the bad, the ugly — and the sexy too.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Review

The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 is stacked when it comes to guest voice appearances. It would be impossible to name them all, but just know that fan favorites return as well as newcomers, and all have their time to shine. A lot is happening this season, it is fast-paced with rarely any downtime, but don’t worry, there are quiet emotional moments, and they are allowed to breathe when they pop up. They are not rushed, and yes, some are extremely painful.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Review

For those that have watched the Vox Machina actual gameplay campaign, you may think that you know what is coming, but there are surprises in store for you as well. Sure, you might know the key plot points that will be hit this season, but nothing can prepare you for how this season plays out. And keep an eye on the backgrounds, because the team puts in Easter Eggs and references whenever they can.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Review

The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 may have devastation weaved into the fabric of its being, but it also has some truly inspiring and empowering moments – in particular when it comes to Keyleth and Pike. Again, I refuse to let spoilers slip but just know that there are moments that literally had me cheering on my girls, and clapping with glee. Everyone goes through it this season, as they tend to every season, but along with the high stakes, come even greater rewards.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Review

Once again Titmouse knocks the animation out of the park. Some truly impressive sequences, locations, and visuals are brought to life in season 3. Episode 4, in particular, has some gnarly stuff that is an absolute feast for the eyes. I have so much fun taking it all in, and I know other Critters will, as well.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Review

The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 takes viewers on a ride right from the very first moment of the very first episode. The stakes are high, the drama is juicy, and relationships are heating up. There are some very difficult scenes to watch and if you do not shed tears, you do not have a heart. Critical Role, thank you for another perfect season. Ten out of ten. No notes.

Tessa Smith: Why the name change for season 2?

Tze Chun: Season one, Gremlin: Secrets of the Mogwai, I think we gave up a lot of the secrets. So when we went into season two, really what it was, was we really want every season to feel like its own event and its own thing. So season one told the story of the meeting between Gizmo and the old Mr. Wing from the original movies when he was 10 years old. It really tells the story of the origin of the Mogwai, the Mogwai ancestral home, how they came to be and their adventure in China. Season two takes place in America, and tells the story of how the Wing family and Gizmo came to America. And so in thinking through that, we thought, well, Secrets of the Mogwai as the title doesn’t really fit in anymore. And also, how do we make this feel like it’s its own? If it was a movie, how is the sequel as big of an event as the first one?

Brendan Hay: And we get to do a little nod to the Gremlins theatrical sequel, which I’m looking for any chance to do.

There Was A Three Hour Long Meeting To Determine What The Necklace Would Look Like

Tessa Smith: What was it like working as producers on this film for the first time?

Violet McGraw: It was a really great experience. We already knew that on that side of things, it was very hard and complicated and took a lot of work and effort. And now that we’re on that side of things, we’re like, oh, my gosh, our respect for them has just grown even higher. It was so cool. There are so many Zoom calls, like, we had a three-hour or more call one time just about what the necklace should look like. I didn’t know that there were three-hour calls about that stuff.

Madeleine McGraw: I don’t think my mind processed how many calls there were in general on the other side of things. So, yes, although I already had respect for everyone around me on set, including producers, my respect has grown. I don’t know how they do it all the time and so effortlessly. I hope everyone knows how much work goes on behind the camera, especially.

About The Curse of the Necklace

The Davis family is going through some tough times in 1960: Laura and Frank have separated because after years of Frank’s unpredictable alcohol infused temper, Laura has taken action and thrown him out of the house. She has gone back to work as a nurse which her 11-year-old Ellen and 16-year-old Judy, don’t like any more than their dad does.

To try to get Laura back, Frank gives her a beautiful antique necklace he finds in an old 1938 evidence bag at the station, and though Laura doesn’t want to be “bought,” Frank leaves the necklace at the house where Laura and the girls live.

Unfortunately, the necklace is a conduit for the tormented soul of an evil boy from long ago, and Laura and her daughters find themselves in terrible danger from a little boy who no longer exists.

The Curse of the Necklace is playing in theaters now.
