A Tangled Birthday Party

 Tangled Birthday Cake
My oldest daughter just turned 3 – THREE!! (Where does the time go?!?) Her favorite things right now are Tangled and Frozen. She watches them over and over. She even pointed out Rapunzel in Frozen at Elsa’s Coronation before I noticed her. To say she is obsessed is an understatement. So when I asked her what theme she wanted for her birthday party I was not one bit surprised when she told me Tangled. Below are some fun party ideas if you want to do a Tangled theme. We had a blast!
If you want to celebrate a birthday in a big way, consider a Birthday Yard Card in Winter Garden, FL from Celebration Yard Cards

Membership Appreciation Night at Rosamond Gifford Zoo

Membership Appreciation Night at the Zoo

Rosamond Gifford Zoo is our local zoo in Syracuse, New York.  We planned to become members but recently they launched an amazing military program. Veterans, of which my husband is one, and their families can get in FREE when they visit the zoo. Since this means we would not need to be members, we decided to use the money to “adopt an animal.” This means you get your name on the wall, a fact sheet, and a stuffed animal of your adopted animal. My daughters chose the Red Panda. Because we adopted an animal, we were also invited to the Membership Appreciation Night on June 11th, 2014.
What a fun night! When we signed in they gave each of us a ticket for a free drink, popcorn, and ice cream! The restaurant was open which was good since it was 5:30pm and we had two hungry little girls. We grabbed some chicken fingers, burger, and fries to share and the food did not disappoint. It is always good there. There was also a raffle, which we threw $20 in to but didn’t win anything. No big deal at all as it went right to the animals and we are fine with that! (The behind the scenes experience would have been amazing to win though!)

They had a penguin feeding at 6:00pm so we headed over there with our popcorn. The girls loved it! They got right up against the glass and enjoyed seeing them catch the fish. We had seen the penguins there before of course, but never during feeding. Next stop was the barn area. This is my husband’s favorite part because they have alpacas. We got to pet them and then my daughter got to learn how to milk a cow. That is one of her favorite exhibits and she is getting really good at it! At 6:30pm there was an elephant talk so we headed over to that section. My oldest really loved the elephant and kept telling me she wanted to ride on her. What a surprise when after the show they brought the elephant around and let everyone touch her. My older daughter said “She felt hard mommy!” My youngest squealed with excitement when she got to touch the elephant!

We decided to use the time before the raffle winners were announced to check out the inside of the zoo. It was getting dark and windy since a storm seemed to be coming. We saw the lions, lemurs, monkeys, and the fossa which are some of my oldest daughters favorites. She then asked to go see the fish. After seeing all the fish we waited for them to announce the raffle winners. Once we knew we did not win we headed outside for the juggling and bubble show! We were all exhausted since it had been a long day and was now 7:30pm so we only stayed for about 15 minutes of the show and decided to head out. It was a lot of fun!

My Home Water Birth Experience & Why I Would Do It Again

14
home water birth story

First let me start with the obvious here – why I chose to home birth. I hospital birthed my first child and it was not a “bad” experience. It was, however, not totally what I wanted. I wanted to be able birth naturally but because I was “not progressing fast enough” I was given the option of pitocin or epidural. I went with an epidural because I knew that pitocin would most likely just lead to an epidural anyways.

I very much wanted to avoid that this time and let my body do what it was meant to do. I also liked the idea of being in the comfort of my own home. I would be able to sleep in my home with my baby that first night rather than stuck in a hospital room, most likely without my husband as he would be tending to our eldest child. Speaking of our oldest daughter, I wanted her to be there. I wanted her to experience it, to meet her sibling and start the bonding process immediately.

I very much trusted our midwife and I knew that I would be sent to the hospital if there was an issue. The hospital was only about a 5 minute drive so I was quite comfortable with that. So, that is what swayed me in the decision to birth at home. I very much wanted a water birth!

We were also team green (did not find out the gender of the baby prior to birth) for both our kids. I would highly recommend that, nothing like it! Home birthing is certainly not for everyone…but if you are thinking about it, I say go for it!

My Home Water Birth Story

The night before I went into labor I was really antsy. I just felt that labor was coming and tried to get as much rest as possible. I woke up several times in the night having to pee and with mild cramping/contractions.

Around 5:00am I woke up to pee again and had several hard(er) contractions within 15 mins. I woke up my husband and told him I did not think he would be going to work that day. He laughed but then asked if I was serious when he saw my face. I told him I was going to go try to eat something so I would have strength as I labored. I went downstairs to let him rest and ate a Luna protein bar.

We were not timing contractions yet but I was counting and had about 15 in the first hour. By 7:00am they had gotten stronger and I just knew this was it. We paged the midwife just to let her know what was going on but also that we could go unassisted for some time still as it didn’t seem like it was going to be a quick labor. She said she would call around 9:00am and check in. I tried to do some things to distract me like play video games and mess around on Facebook but contractions were coming every 3-4 minutes and getting harder so I decided to just walk around the house.

My husband started to fill up the birthing tub and it was ready around 9:00am just in time for Priscilla (midwife on call) to call back. My husband let her know that I was going to get in the tub soon to help with the pain but that we probably still had time as contractions were increasing but were not “there” yet. We called my doula to update her and she came over right away to help with our oldest daughter.

I got in the tub around 10:00am and the hot water felt AMAZING. There is no other way to describe it. I had an idea it would slow labor down but it was so worth it. It really made everything much more tolerable. Priscilla came around 11:00am. Every time I got out of the water to pee I would try to lay on the couch or squat and have a few contractions that way.

They were MUCH harder out of the water than in the water due to gravity but that moved the labor along quicker. As much as I wanted to stay out for labor’s sake, I was rarely out of the water longer than 15 mins. I asked my husband to get in the water with me to rub my back and he did. As I contracted, he would push in on my hips to counteract the pain and it really helped (a tip from my doula!).

IMG 4653

Around 2:30pm I was starting to feel discouraged. I was in a lot of pain and honestly was rethinking why I was at home instead of at the hospital with an epidural feeling nothing. Looking at my oldest and holding her hand really helped a lot as I knew she would be unable to be with me at the hospital. I asked my midwife to please check me so I could see how far dilated I was.

I knew I needed that encouragement. I got out of the water, went to the bathroom, and then she checked me. She told me that baby’s head was very low and that I was around 7cm dilated. She suggested sitting backwards on the toilet and letting gravity help during contractions. WOW! That sucked! It was the worst pain I have ever felt.

Even when I was not contracting the pressure was incredible. I told my husband I needed to get back in the water after 4 of those contractions so he helped me back to the tub. This was around 3:15pm.

At this point contractions were coming harder and faster but in my head, I was thinking I just cannot do this another 12 hours (thinking about my labor with my oldest which was 24 hours). I finally voiced my opinion and said “I don’t think I can do this” and almost started to cry.

I should mention that I had been getting very verbal during contractions since getting back in the tub but honestly was not thinking the baby was that close to coming. My midwife and husband said “You are doing it!” The next contraction I had this urge to push. There is no other way to describe it except that I HAD to push. So I pushed and oh my, the ring of fire…that was horrible! I screamed “it burns!” as I was pushing and both my husband and Priscilla said “that’s good!!”.

My older daughter started crying because I was screaming so loud so my doula took her outside. Only 3-4 more pushes and I felt baby’s head pop out. I reached down and it was absolutely the most incredible thing I ever felt. I leaned back (I was hanging over my husband in the tub before this) and pushed once more (a total of 9 minutes pushing) and out popped baby!

We pulled her up and put her on my chest. My husband looked and said “It’s Lorie!” and started bawling. I was so exhausted but also so happy. I was on cloud 9.

Lorie%2Bbirth

In the end I got the labor and birth I wanted. Man was it tough but I would never change a thing. To be in the comfort of my own home was amazing. To be able to cuddle my new baby with my older daughter and to birth with no interventions at all was so empowering.

I am woman, hear me roar!

LeapFrog LeapPad Ultra Review

LeapPad Ultra Review

I was lucky enough to win a LeapPad Ultra through another blog last September. We held on to it and gave it to our (then) 2.5 year old for Christmas. This is such a great product. There are lots of games available that star her favorite characters. The free game that came with it, Scaredy Cat, is one of my daughter’s favorite apps! She also loves to take photos of all of us and blend them together. She even made one where her sister’s face was on her puppy, Violet’s, head! I know a lot of people seem to think the games are too expensive but you can always find a coupon code. I think they are well worth it. My daughter gets hours and hours of play out of each game. You can also find games that are $8 – $10 that are great – the “Get Ready for Kindergarten” series is a hit with her! She is just about to turn 3 and she plays many games that are rated for 5-7 years old so keep that in mind when ordering. The touch screen always works great, the camera is good considering it is a tablet for toddlers, and the app variety is unmatched!

As far as negatives go there is ONE thing I wish I could do. I wish I could add videos on to it. Then I could add our digital version of Frozen on there and make my daughter the happiest little girl in the world. It is also annoying that if she decides to change her “name” display to random letters and numbers, there is no way to change it back to her name. It says “That name was already used.” So the display name has been every possible version of her name and now it is just whatever she feels like typing in.
Unfortunately the screen recently cracked. Bad. I was freaking out since she has had this not even a year and she uses it every.single.day. She loves to play it in bed while settling down for the night. It happened on a Saturday night and I emailed LeapFrog right away with a photo of the LeapPad. I was honestly expecting them to do nothing because I had won and not purchased this product. I received an email Monday asking me to send the serial number and a photo with a number sequence written across the screen in permanent marker. Then on Wednesday, they sent me a coupon code for 50% off a LeapPad Ultra! The site was offering free shipping as well so we got a brand new LeapPad Ultra for just $81.00 after tax. My daughter’s birthday is June 24th and the LeapPad should be here next week – just in time! I am so excited as I know my daughter will be thrilled! She still tries to play her LeapPad Ultra – cracked screen and sharpie numbers written across it and all! Silly girl!

I just had to give credit where credit is due. Thank you LeapFrog! I will continue to be a loyal customer and am very excited for the upcoming LeapBand – I plan to get each of my girls one for Christmas this year!
I was under no responsibility to blog about this product and I am receiving no compensation for it. All opinions expressed are my own.

Amy Elizabeth Studios

We used Amy Elizabeth Studios for our first born’s 1 month photo shoot. Everything about the experience was amazing. She was very professional and creative. She kept coming up with ideas that topped her previous idea and so we ended up with some really awesome shots! She had the photos edited and back to us within just a few days! Every photo was perfect which made it really hard to choose which ones to print. She came in to our home and photographed us in our environment. Our daughter took to her right away and slept through most of the photo shoot. Below are just a few.

My Weight Loss Journey: How I Lost 50 lbs in 5 Months

1
weight loss
130 Day Progression

Last summer I knew I was getting heavy. But when I went to the doctor at the end of August and was told that I weighed 187 pounds (AFTER a month of dieting!) I was shocked. It hit me like a bullet. I could not believe that I let myself get that heavy. Yes, I had two kids in two years. Yes, I had moved across the country earlier that year and was adjusting to my new job as a stay at home mom. But that was no excuse for me. I had never been that heavy (non-pregnant) before. This was not OK. I decided that after the long Labor Day weekend this was it for me. Time to get my act together. No more soda, no more ice cream EVERY.SINGLE.NIGHT., and I was going to get off my butt and do something about this. I want to set an example for my girls. I want them to be proud of me, not embarrassed to be seen with me. I wanted better for myself.

Cutting Back (Not Out)

So I did it. I gave up soda, cut back on junk food, cut back on dairy, and committed to working out 5-6 days a week. At first it was Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred, then her Ripped in 30, then Shaun T’s T25, and I am currently maintaining my weight loss with Tony Horton’s P90X3. One thing these workouts have in common? Their length. They are 25-35 minute long workouts. There is no excuse to not be able to find that kind of time. For me, I get up at 5am (ugh, I know!) and workout, shower, and have my coffee before my girls even think about waking up. I enjoy that me time. I NEED that me time.

Snack Health(ier)

As far as food goes, I am not on a diet by any means. I eat what I want but I watch my calories. I do not overdo it. I use the MyFitnessPal app to track my daily intake. I don’t eat dessert ever single night like I used to. I don’t finish my girls’ lunches when they don’t – it goes in the trash or the fridge depending on what is left.  I still snack – a handful of chips (I love Better Chips), or pretzels, or peanuts – twice a day. I found that if I tried to not have my little indulgences throughout the day, I would binge on the weekends and gain.

Drink Water

I drink water like a fish. Seriously. I drink at least eight 16 oz glasses a day. And one to two coffees a day with a dash of creamer, no sugar. I do not drink cow’s milk at all. I use it in cooking sometimes but that is it. I use almond milk in my cereal. I buy the vanilla unsweetened and I use that with cheerios or corn flakes. It is awesome because it makes it taste sweeter – like their sugary counterparts.

I have lost 52 lbs and I am currently maintaining and toning. I am not perfect. Every now and then I grab a Coolatta at Dunks, have a big piece of cake, or a bowl of ice cream. Just not every day. And one last tip. Do not eat after 8:00 pm. Just don’t do it. If it is past 8:00 pm – you are not hungry, you are just bored. If I can do it, you can do it!
