House of the Dragon Season 3 turns deadly as the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet erupts, changing the course of the war for the Iron Throne forever.

WARNING: This article contains massive spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 1.
The Season 3 premiere of House of the Dragon delivers an absolute bloodbath, bringing the simmering tensions of the Dance of the Dragons to a roaring, devastating boil. As the war of succession escalates, the focus shifts entirely to the treacherous waters of the Gullet, where the Triarchy’s fleet clashes with the Velaryon forces. By the time the smoke clears, the political and emotional landscape of Westeros is fundamentally fractured.
Before the dragons take to the sky, the tension inside Dragonstone reaches a fever pitch. Frustrated by what he perceives as his mother’s crippling caution, Jacaerys Velaryon makes a stunning, insubordinate move. Desperate to protect the realm and secure victory, Jace locks Rhaenyra in her room. This shocking act of defiance highlights the growing rift between the Queen and her heir, as Jace takes the reins of military strategy into his own hands – a choice that ultimately leads to ruin.
Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, the Triarchy’s internal dynamics prove to be equally chaotic and brutal. The fierce commander Sharako Lohar wastes no time establishing dominance, engaging in a display of raw power that culminates in Lohar throwing Tyland Lannister straight into the sea. It is a stark reminder of the volatile forces Team Green has allied with.

The central set-piece of the episode is the catastrophic Battle of the Gullet, a naval clash that quickly turns into an airborne massacre. The entrance of Roddy the Ruin and his winter-hardened Northmen arrives with brutal timing under desperate circumstances, throwing their full might into the fray.
The skies darken as Rhaena Targaryen makes a breathtaking and unauthorized entrance. Having successfully claimed the wild dragon Sheepstealer, Rhaena flies headfirst into the conflict. Her involvement in the Battle of the Gullet provides essential air support, but the raw power of dragons cannot entirely salvage the chaotic naval ambush.

The outcome of the Battle of the Gullet is a bittersweet victory at best, leaving both sides utterly devastated. The cost of the clash is unimaginable. Team Black suffers its most painful loss yet when Jacaerys Velaryon is killed in action, his dragon shot down in a hail of crossbow fire. The casualties mount heavily on both sides, claiming the lives of Sharako Lohar and Jason Lannister amidst the chaotic slaughter.
As the tides recede, the immediate fallout for House Velaryon is grim. Lord Corlys Velaryon meets a tragic fate by the end of the battle, perishing in the very waters he spent a lifetime mastering. His son, Alyn of Hull, survives the brutal engagement, but his fate is forever altered; he is left to carry the heavy emotional and political burden of a shattered fleet and a broken family. With Jace dead and Corlys gone, Rhaenyra’s cause has never felt more vulnerable.
