We Live In Time features two incredible performances by Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, who are absolutely adorable together.
It should come as no surprise that both Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh deliver incredible performances in We Live In Time. They are adorable together with chemistry that is off the charts. While I understand why the film jumps around in time, I feel that it does not do the story any favors, creating confusion and disconnect at times.
The film follows the love story of Almut (Florence Pugh) and Tobias (Andrew Garfield) after they are brought together by chance. They are forced to deal with the limits of time, learning to treasure every moment they have together.
We Live In Time heavily focuses on the concept of enjoying quality time with those you love while you can. It is a tearjerker and one that is sure to stick with many viewers long after the credits roll. Garfield and Pugh are adorable together, making it difficult not to root for them, however, the non-chronological order of the film does take away from the audience’s connection to them.
I appreciate what the movie is trying to do by making this decision, but believe that it would have been more impactful if it played out in chronological order. Because the events of the relationship are jumbled, the timeline itself sometimes becomes confusing. There are also moments when viewers are completely on this journey with Pugh and Garfield but then are ripped away from it as they are catapulted into another moment in time, leaving them wanting more.
That said, We Live In Time does a beautiful job of showcasing the importance of taking advantage of every moment. Life is short and we never know how much time we truly have. It is important to appreciate what we have, and those that we love.
While it certainly has its issues, We Live In Time tells a beautiful story about two individuals who are deeply in love. Following their journey, though confusing at times, is heartwarming and thought-provoking. It is hard to imagine what you would do in their shoes, and to see them actually struggle with decisions and taking the time to do what is right for them, is relatable and inspiring.
Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh do what they can with what they are given. They both shine in their performances and have great chemistry. The only disconnect viewers will have with their relationship comes from the decision to follow their story in a non-chronological order.
I fully believe that if We Live In Time did not actually jump through time, it would have a larger impact on audiences as a whole. Or, if they wanted to continue this route, they should have stuck with it and made the ending the beginning. Which is all I can say without giving spoilers away. I would love to see Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh on screen together again in the future.
We Live In Time comes to theaters everywhere on October 11.
