Karl Urban Praises Marvel, Taika Waititi, & Chris Hemsworth

This experience was all thanks to Marvel Studios and Disney, but the opinions are 100% my own.

Karl Urban Thor Ragnarok Interview
(Photo Credit: Allison Waken / AllForTheBoys.com)

As you likely know already, I have done a fair amount of celebrity interviews in the last few years. My recent one with Karl Urban sticks out in my mind, however, because he is the nicest guy in the world. Seriously. To paint you a picture – the Thor: Ragnarok interview room was set up with three rows of chairs, filled with 25 bloggers. When he walked into the room, he proceeded to walk up and down each row, shaking all of our hands – and looking us in the eyes as he said hi. I was blown away! I was already really looking forward to this interview, but that is the exact moment I knew it was going to be great.

Karl is Literally The Nicest Guy

The night before our interview, at the Thor: Ragnarok premiere, Karl had walked past us and we mentioned how great he was as Skurge (so good guys, SO GOOD!). That resulted in us getting high fives and waves from him. So I should have known then that he was pretty much the nicest guy in Hollywood. But he just solidified it during this interview while giving praise to his fellow actors, as well as Director Taika Waititi, time and time again. I promise you that is a reoccurring theme you will find in this interview.

How Much of Thor Was Improvised?

You may have heard by now, but we have been told by several people that a lot of Thor: Ragnarok was improvised. Karl explained why this helped make the film what it is. “Full credit to Marvel – they hired a director who has a very strong comedic style and sensibility and they actually let him do his job. There was already a brilliant foundation in the script. We would shoot a couple of versions of what was on the page, then shoot a wealth of material that Taika [Waititi], quite frankly, just made up. There was nothing sacrilegious about a take – you’d be in the middle of a take and he’d be, ‘why don’t you say this, say this line’. [Or he would just yell out direction] and it was actually kind of liberating. You felt comfortable – there was no such thing as a bad choice – that afforded everybody a wonderful freedom to fully explore all the options.”

He then added in something that has me SUPER excited for the blu-ray with bonus features to get released. Yes, I know I am a bit ahead of myself, but I can’t help it! “I can’t wait to see the extras on this movie! The movie is funny and entertaining but I think the extras are going to be as equally entertaining and I can’t wait to see them.

Favorite Cut Scene

Since there was a lot of improv on set, we asked Karl if there was anything in particular he wished made it in to the final cut. Without giving too much away, he let us know that there was. “Skurge’s introduction – when I’m trying to woo the young ladies. They had a whole collection of stolen stuff that Skurge had pillaged from the universe. And you only got to see one thing of me shaking the shake weight. But they had all sorts of stuff – we shot like for hours with me with fishing rods with lures in front of the girls and all sorts of crazy stuff. So I’m looking forward to seeing that [in the bonus features].

Initial Thoughts on the Final Movie

We learned that Karl’s first time seeing the movie was with us, at the premiere (how cool is that?). So we asked him what his immediate thoughts on it were. Of course, he had nothing but good things to say about all involved. “I just feel so blessed. It was such a pleasurable experience to not only see the film with my friends and colleagues, but to see the film with an audience who were thoroughly entertained. Again, you have to give full credit to Taika and to Marvel for really producing a film that reboots Thor in a wonderful, healthy, positive way. I’m so happy for Chris [Hemsworth] that he’s finally been given the opportunity to spread his wings. I think that this film showcases his complete full potential.

Life on Set

One thing we heard a lot was how fun Taika made life on set. Karl was no different, saying it was a lot of fun. “I can say this is one of the most fun sets that I’ve ever been on. Taika is constantly playing music in between takes. I’m so proud of him. He really handled himself with such great aplomb and I imagine it would have been a pressure cooker situation to be responsible for this behemoth movie. But he did it with such aplomb and such grace and style. And he created an environment that was not only fun, but it was focused. That’s a rarity. We worked hard. We worked some six day weeks but we worked ten hour days. We didn’t stop for lunch. So there was a constant momentum. Between that and Taika providing the sound track – it made it enjoyable.

The Girls of Thor: Ragnarok

One of my favorite aspects of Thor: Ragnarok was all the badass women. We asked Karl if it was important to see strong women in this film. “It’s imperative. It would have been a boring movie without them. Cate [Blanchett] and Tessa [Thompson] are so wonderful in this film – they are my favorite parts of the movie. I love seeing Tessa’s swagger and the journey of her character from the dark place that she was in to redemption. I had such a wonderful time working with Cate Blanchett. To be perfectly honest, she was the reason I decided to do this movie – the opportunity to work with Cate Blanchett. I read that script and saw that ninety percent of my material was with her. I’m like where do I sign up – how much do I pay you?

Joining the Marvel Universe

I imagine joining the Marvel Universe has got to be a big deal for actors. We asked Karl how it felt and this is what he had to say. “Being part of Marvel Univers, is an absolute pleasure. They are a wonderful collaborative company and I have a huge degree of admiration and respect for what they have done. Particularly what they have done on this film and how they’ve supported Taika. [They] really put a network around him and gave him freedom – and had the courage to let him do his job. Nobody does it better than than these guys. Many people try and copy them, but they have a formula. They are heavily aligned with the creative element of the process.

Raising His Sons Right

Karl has two sons, ages twelve and sixteen. It is very obvious that he tries to do the right thing always, and so we asked him how he is teaching that to his boys. “I think with parenting the key is to lead by example and provide a lot of love and support. I’m also a firm believer in allowing them to fall down and make mistakes because that is ultimately the way we learn. If you can learn from somebody else’s mistake then you’re smart – but most of us learn by making mistakes. It’s wonderful to watch them grow and flourish when you don’t push them too hard. I think that’s when I’m most proud of my sons – when out of their own volition, they start to make the right choices in life.

What’s Next?

You may already know about the Dredd show that is in the works. We asked Karl if he is going to be a part of that – or at least would like to be. “Rebellion, who own the rights to Dredd, are in the process of developing a TV show. [It] won’t be a sequel to the movie, but it’ll be a reboot or reimagining. I’ve said to them I’m interested in reprising that role if they write a character that has a purpose and a function and there’s an emotionally compelling story. I would love the opportunity to go back and continue to explore that character. So we’ll see what they do.”

He then went on to tell us a little bit about another film he has coming up, Bent.“The movie that I’m most excited about, apart from Thor, is a film that I shot this year with Sofía Vergara, who’s so brilliant. It’s this movie called Bent that was written and directed by Bobby Moresco, who wrote Crash and Million Dollar Baby – it’s got a great pedigree. It’s a modern take on a classic noir genre. I just had the best time working with Sofía. You all know her for her comedy, which she does extraordinarily well. In this film, she plays this femme fatale – she’s going to blow people away.

*POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD*

Up until here I have kept anything that I consider to be a potential spoiler out of this article. If you don’t mind reading spoilers, then feel free to read on. If you do, maybe wait until you have seen the film before continuing on with reading this interview.

Skurge Karl Urban Thor Ragnarok

Skurge’s Character Arc

Skurge is one of my favorite characters of this film because of his character arc. We mentioned to Karl that is seemed like Skurge just wanted to be part of Thor’s group, part of the warriors three. So we asked him about it. “I got a call from Taika saying listen there’s this character in this movie that I’d love you to do. I’d wanted to work with Taika for a long time. I’m a huge fan of his work from What We Do In The Shadows, to Wilderpeople, and Boy. So already he had my half hooked right just by calling me.”

Karl Urban Thor Ragnarok Interview
(Photo Credit: Allison Waken / AllForTheBoys.com)

“He sent me the script and I immediately recognized that there was something profoundly emotionally compelling about [Skurge’s] journey that was eminently relatable. Here’s a character that’s put in a situation where he has to make a decision. He has to align himself with a cause that he does not believe in but it’s the only thing he can do in order to survive. I thought that was a very interesting moral dilemma. Then once he’s crossed that bridge and he realizes there is no turning back, he is looking for a way to redeem himself. What makes a character interesting is the faults and the flaws that you can understand. In this case, it’s pretty clear that [Skurge] is just trying to survive. You could see what it meant to him – his fear, his regret, his internal repulsion at what he was seeing. But he had no choice.

The Perfect Ending

As if to end the interview the exact same way it started, as a gentleman, Karl held the door open for each and every one of us as we exited for our group photo. He truly is one amazing guy! My husband is likely Karl Urban’s biggest fan. Don’t get me wrong, I love his work too, but my husband talks about him a lot. If Karl Urban is in a movie, you better bet we will be at the theater watching it opening night. I cannot wait for him to see Karl as Skurge. I honestly think it is one of his best performances. His character has humor, some great battle scenes, and he just might show some heart too.

What I Learned at the Thor: Ragnarok Press Junket (with Chris, Tom, Mark, Cate, & More!)

This experience was all thanks to Marvel Studios and Disney, but the opinions are 100% my own.

Thor Ragnarok Press Junket

I have always thought it would be really cool to attend to press junket with the cast of a film. A couple of weeks ago in LA, I was able to attend my first one – and for Thor: Ragnarok of all movies! On stage was HUGE talent – Taika Waititi, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Jeff Goldblum, Rachel House, and Kevin Feige. It was pretty surreal to be in the same room as them, and to be able to chat with them about their new film. This is a long one guys, and I even cut out a lot. Hope you enjoy it!

Chris Hemsworth Thor Ragnarok Press Junket

What Makes This Thor Different

The host of the panel started the press junket off by asking Chris Hemsworth what makes this Thor so different from the others. He immediately answered with “Taika Waititi.” I pretty much have to agree with that. I am so glad that Taika took on the role as director for this film, because he made it what it is – which is incredible. Chris continued on, “I think we all had a vision, and an idea, and a want to do something vastly different than what we’d done before. To take it to a different place. That meant doing away with what we knew and reinventing it. It all came from [Taika’s] crazy, wonderful brain, and his inspiration, and him pushing us every day on set. [He was] constantly encouraging us to improvise, and explore, and take risks. It was one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve ever had on a set.

Kevin Feige Thor Ragnarok Press Junket

The Right Fit

Kevin Feige, the President of Marvel Studios, was asked what made Taika and everyone else on the stage a good fit. “If you look at everything Chris has done as this character, there have been moments of humor throughout [the other films]. We wanted to build on that. If you look at the movie, it’s got the epic action. It’s got Thor arguably more powerful than he’s ever been in any of the films, with his powers going up against the Hulk. But at the same time embracing what Mr. Hemsworth does better than anyone up until now has ever been able to see –  his acting expands to comedy way. And Taika giving them the confidence to explore that, and to try things. Most of that is in the movie, because it was on story, and yet at the same time expanded each of their characters.

Mark Ruffalo Thor Ragnarok Press Junket

Will We See A Hulk Solo Film?

Someone asked Mark Ruffalo a question that I am pretty sure everyone was thinking – will we see a Hulk solo film? We wanted to know if it was something that he would be interested in. His response made me chuckle, but also a little bit sad. “I would love to do a Hulk movie. Over a year ago, Kevin asked me to come over and have a script meeting. Basically he sat me down and he said, ‘What would you like to do if you had a stand-alone Hulk movie?’ And I said, ‘I’d like to do this, this, and this; and this and this – and then this. Then it would end like this.’ And he’s like, ‘I love that. Let’s do that over the next three movies, starting with Thor 3 and carry it on through Avengers 3 and Avengers 4.’ So that’s my stand-alone Hulk movie.

Kevin added, “That’s exactly what happened. Someday, a stand-alone would be great. But for the time being, Hulk’s presence in these movies, and what we’re going to be able to do with his character arc over these three movies is super exciting.

Thor Ragnarok Valkyrie
Marvel Studios’ THOR: RAGNAROK..Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson)..Ph: Film Frame..©Marvel Studios 2017

Tessa on Playing Valkyrie

As you may or may not know, Valkyrie is a big part of the Thor comic books. In the comics, as well as Norse mythology, she is white. Someone asked Tessa if there was any pressure playing a character who is white, since she is not. “No, I didn’t feel any pressure with that specifically. The things that I thought about [were] the particulars of Valkyrie – like mass and size. I thought ‘I’m short,’ or ‘I’m not buff enough.’ She’s arguably as strong as Thor – how do I stand next to a person like Chris Hemsworth and feel like that’s true. Norse mythology [is] mystifying, and fantastical, and glorious, and also very confusing and doesn’t make a lot of sense.”

“I remember someone online saying ‘Tessa Thompson playing Valkyrie is white genocide.’ Which is just as mystifying as Norse mythology. This thing that I’m tasked to do is to capture the spirit of the character, and I think the spirit of all of us has very little to do with what color we are. So I just didn’t really invest in that.

Cate Blanchett Thor Ragnarok

Cate Blanchett Getting Into Character

One of my favorite parts of the press junket was when Cate Blanchett described becoming Hela on set. She admitted she struggled a bit with some of the battle scenes – and the way she solved it was pretty unique. “I manifest weapons, and I had to throw them, and I could see Taika’s disappointment as I threw it. I said, ‘Ha.’ and I had to stop making the noises. So I had to close my mouth. Eventually Zoe Bell (her stunt double) suggested that I put some sugar packets – which was deeply humiliating – in my hand so at least I could throw something and be real. Zoe helped me with little things like that. She was a great action director.

Thor Ragnarok Press Conference

All Female Marvel Movie

I am sure by now you have read that the ladies of Marvel have asked Kevin Feige for an all female Marvel film (yes please!!!). Tessa Thompson discussed this at the press event. “Recently, I marched up with a couple other women that work in Marvel, and we were like, to Kevin, ‘What about a movie with some female superheroes – just like, all of them.’ But there’s a precedent for it in the comics, right, because there are teams like the Lady Liberators…” Kevin told us his thoughts on what it was like to get that question. “It was a pretty amazing moment to be somewhere and have your shoulder get tapped, and turn around, and every female hero we have standing there going, ‘How about it?’ And I said, ‘Yes.’” He said yes guys! I hope that really happens because WOW, what an incredible film that would be!

Chris Hemsworth Thor Ragnarok

Thor and Hulk Acting Together

In Thor: Ragnarok we see a lot of Hulk, versus the usual Bruce Banner until it is time to fight. I totally adored Hulk in this film, and Chris Hemsworth did too. “This is my favorite version of the Hulk because we actually got to act together. We’d only really fought one another on screen in the previous films. This time around, we got to improvise our way through it, and invent this chemistry that we hadn’t explored before. [We] built this new version of the Hulk, which was a little bit more articulate and vocal than he had been prior. There’s just so much more room for the humor and fun that the character embodies. I think it’s fantastic.

Taika Waititi Thor Ragnarok Press Junket

Taika’s Favorite Music on Set

Probably the funniest part of the whole press conference was when someone asked about the music on set. Immediately Cate Blanchett said Taika liked to listen to Yo Gabba Gabba, and Taika stated it was a song called “Don’t Bite Your Friends”. I was taking a video at the time, so I was trying REALLY hard not to burst out laughing. Having two young girls who used to be obsessed with that show, I know the song well. As Taika explained, it helps kids learn not to bite their friends. I dare you not to laugh while watching the clip below.

Easter Eggs on Sakaar

Marvel films are known for throwing in lots of Easter Eggs that relate to other movies, as well as the comic books. In Sakaar there are a lot of trash piles, so we asked if there were any in there. Kevin Feige answered, “There might be some things in the trash piles. I mean, the biggest Easter eggs are on the side of the Sakaaran Palace. There are previous Grandmaster champions that we see – as one for Hulk is being constructed. Those are all Easter eggs for the deeper comic universe – that may or may not ever show up in the cinematic universe – but we thought it’d be fun to celebrate.

Taika Waititi Thor Ragnarok

Taika had to add some humor in to the situation – which he is great at doing. “In the trash pile, there is one Easter egg – an actual egg. It’s one of the small ones – well, it’s one of the tiny little chocolate ones, and it’s the wide shot.

Thor Ragnarok Press Junket 2

Hardest Part About Making A Marvel Film

When Taika was asked the hardest part about making a Marvel film, he stood up and pointed to all of the actors on the stage. The whole room was cracking up! Then he went on to explain, “It’s actually keeping your energy up, creatively. All my shoots [on independent films are] about 25 days, and by day 30 on this, I was like, ‘Well, no more ideas. I’m done.’ [But I had] 55 more days so I had to do some meditation – try and chill out – and keep my creative energy going. The amount of exhaustion really does take its toll, and you don’t realize it’s happening until it’s too late, and then you can’t feel your legs.”

Taika Waititi Cate Blanchett Thor Ragnarok
Thor: Ragnarok..Director Taika Waititi on set with Cate Blanchett (Hela)..Photo: Jasin Boland..©Marvel Studios 2017

He added, “My favorite thing is shooting. I love being on set with people, and laughing, and having a great time, and being creative. Then you’re stuck in a dark room with one person, trying to make sense of this whole thing for almost a year. And that’s a whole new journey of exhaustion. Then you can’t feel your arms after that.

Tom Hiddleston Thor Ragnarok

Will Loki Ever Change?

Tom Hiddleston was asked if we will ever see Loki change. His initial response made us all chuckle, but then he got serious. “I did ask Taika if I could get a haircut, as well [as Thor]. But his answer was a quick, ‘No.’ It’s interesting. In a way this film is about the development of the relationship between Thor and Loki. Thor has evolved, and grown, and matured; and Loki is stuck in his struggles of the past. That’s the challenge for Loki in this – that he’s got to confront the fact that time is moving on, and people change. So I don’t know, we’ll see. There’s room to grow, and I’m still here. We’ll see where he goes next. I’m not going to spoil anything.

With Tessa Thompson Valkyrie Thor Ragnarok

Selfie Time!

After the press junket, Jeff Goldblum and Tessa Thompson were nice enough to stop and take a photo with me. It was my first time meeting another Tessa (lame to be excited about that, right?). Then Jeff told me how much he loved my Guardians of the Galaxy sleeve tattoo! I mean, validation for him is the icing on the cake, is it not? I must say, I think my first full on press conference was a success! We learned a lot about one of my favorite Marvel movies, and got to hear from the whole cast at once. It was totally fun to see them play off each other on stage.

An Interview with Taika Waititi: The Brilliant Mind Behind Thor: Ragnarok

This experience was all thanks to Marvel Studios and Disney, but the opinions are 100% my own.

Thor Ragnarok Taika Waititi Interview

Taika Waititi is one of my favorite directors. I love all of his work, so I was thrilled when I found out he was directing Thor: Ragnarok. In case you some how missed it, I am a bit of a Marvel fan. So knowing he was in charge of a Marvel movie made my heart happy. The man is brilliant.

His movies always have humor in them – but can also be deep, and even action packed! I just could not wait to see it. And then, something incredible happened. I was invited to LA to walk the red carpet at the Thor: Ragnarok premiere AND interview Taika – I basically screamed out loud when I found out.

As I was sitting there waiting for him to walk in, I would be lying if I didn’t admit I was a bit nervous. I mean, to me, this guy is a legend already. I have seen all of his movies, many times, and I could not wait to pick his brain!

The night before the interview I saw Thor: Ragnarok at the LA premiere so my mind was racing with questions.

He sat down and I waited a few seconds before blurting out:

How does it feel to jump in with Marvel?

I knew that Taika Waititi has only directed small, independent (and incredible) films up until now – although he did write the initial story for Moana. But for him, I imagined, Marvel was the big time – the ultimate. I mean, I know it would be for me! His answer didn’t surprise me.

It was harrowing and exciting. When they offered me the chance to come and pitch on it, my experience was making very independent films – low budget, 25 day shoots. My first reaction really was ‘I guess Marvel’s lost their mind and they’re just asking anyone to do anything’. I was really unsure if I really wanted to get out of my comfort zone but I started feeling, before the Marvel films, I was already getting too comfortable and I wanted to start learning stuff.”

(Photo Credit: Allison Waken / AllForTheBoys.com)

He went on to explain his background in filmmaking and why working with Marvel would be such a big opportunity for him.

“I started making films at about 28, 29 [years old]. It wasn’t my big dream as a kid. [I wasn’t like] JJ and all these guys running around with super 8 cameras when they’re four years old. I caught it very late and it was like an arranged marriage – I forced myself to love it. After years of making films, much like Chris with his previous versions of Thor, I started feeling I was kind of treading water and I wanted to just keep upping the game and learning.”

Taika added one last part about his pitch with Marvel.

“A lot of people think [a pitch is] about you pitching stories – it’s not. It’s about figuring out if you wanna hang out for two years. So we went and hung out and Marvel was really great and straight up with me and I haven’t had any regrets.

Putting Himself in Thor: Ragnarok

If you know anything about Taika Waititi’s previous work, you know he is in all of his movies. Sometimes he is a main character, sometimes simply a dead brother. In Thor: Ragnarok, he plays Korg, a rock like character called a Kronan. He has quite a few scenes (which he steals if you ask me), and we asked him why he would give himself that added pressure. His response had us all laughing.

Because I’m a self-saboteur. Any chance I get to put my career at risk I’ll just do it. I will wedge myself into any film I do. I really love the actor title.”

“With Sakaar and so many eclectic characters and crazy elements in this film, you often need something grounding for the audience. I feel like I am really good at playing mum characters, like in What We Do In The Shadows my character is the mother of the house. Korg is very much the mother of the prison and looks after everyone. I think audiences appreciate having someone that’s just down to earth and gentle – you need that. The film is crazy [so it’s nice to] take a step back every now and then.”

Korg’s Lines Were ALL Improv!

I promise you, Korg will be one of your favorite characters in this movie. Taika has said in previous interviews that a lot of Thor: Ragnarok was improvised, so we asked him how much of Korg’s dialogue was, and the answer might surprise you.

All of Korg’s dialogue was improvised. I didn’t decide on playing [Korg] until right at the last minute. Because no one really knew what this character was going to be and what the point of this character was.”

We are all really hoping to see Korg again. We asked Taika if we will see him in the MCU in the future – perhaps in Infinity War or Avengers 4. He wouldn’t give us a straight answer but he did respond with “Georgia’s a really hot state.” Fingers crossed!

The Feel On Set

As far as life on set for Taika and the rest of the actors, we learned that it was a lot of fun.

“Chris and I [got along] very well and a lot of the scenes in this film were adlibbed. There’s a lot of stuff in the film that’s adlibbed. On all of my films, I use the script as a template, as a suggestion for where we can go. We’ll do a version of it and then we’ll play around, make stuff up, and see if we can get something better. When you write dialogue six months before you shoot, you think it’s amazing at that time but you never know what change or it might be a bore so yeah, so it changes on the day.

Taika Chris Thor Ragnarok

Taika added,

I ruined most of the takes by even being in front of the camera or laughing off camera. The way I do it is I’m the closest to the actors. I stare at them and say ‘say this, say this, say this’ and poke them in the shoulder. I’s a real god complex problem. You can just manipulate people, like a puppeteer. I can’t believe I’m making Anthony Hopkins whatever I want. So yeah, it really goes to your head pretty quick.

The Colors of This Movie

You probably have noticed that Thor: Ragnarok is FULL of color. We asked Taika how that came about.

When I was a kid I was obsessed with the real weird comics – really colorful splash pages and stupid crazy characters. I feel like there is a trend lately – not just superhero movies but a lot of movies – where they are depressing and sad and serious. I hope people come out of the cinema smiling, because you go to any cinema and no one comes out smiling anymore. [Which is also] because it’s ten dollars for parking and you pay 80 bucks for the babysitter. The world is crazy right now. It’s nice to go away, smile, laugh, get a little bit of an escape.”

Which Performance Stood Out The Most

In Thor: Ragnarok, Taika worked with a lot of incredible actors. We asked him if there were any that stood out to him or surprised him.

I knew Jeff [Goldblum] would be that good but my favorite performance is Chris [Hemsworth]’s performance. How fun he is and how funny and charming – [he makes me feel like if he] actually were Thor, I would totally go and be with [him]. I just love having the opportunity to give him free range to be himself and to be charming and the favorite character. In particular, him and Mark [Ruffalo] together, were bouncing off each other – I love that.

*POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD*

There were are few things that came up during our interview that are just too good not to write about – but may contain potential spoilers. Nothing too crazy that will ruin the film, but I recommend bookmarking this page and not reading on until you have seen it.

Matt Damon’s Cameo

All of us bloggers agreed that Matt Damon’s cameos was one of our favorite parts of the film. He is an actor playing the part of Loki, and they are reenacting Loki’s death from Thor: The Dark World. It is very early on and is hilarious, but we learned there is actually a pretty legit reason for it as well.

Originally there wasn’t supposed to be cameos. For those of you that don’t know, the actor who plays Thor is Luke [Hemsworth]. We didn’t want the audience to have rely on seeing the other movies, but if you had then it pays off. We shot for shot copied Loki’s death scene – the angle and the size. If you have seen that scene, we’re gonna give it back to you. Matt came into it pretty late in the game. Chris and Matt are good mates and that was Chris’s suggestion.

Loki and Thor’s Relationship

If you have already seen the movie than you know there was a lot less mischief from Loki this time. We asked Taika Waititi why that was, and if his intention was always for it to turn out that way.

I think if it gets predictable – [for example,] you come to the movies and Loki’s doing the same thing again – I don’t think it’s as satisfying as seeing that character come through the other end of it – through a true story arc after three movies. The satisfying relationship and story arc in Ragnarok is Thor and Loki and seeing how finally two brothers can just get over their crap. Because that’s actually what life is about. Sometimes it does take 15 years to decide if you like someone or not.

What We Do In The Shadows

While we were taking our group photo, I had to jump on the chance to tell Taika how much I LOVE What We Do In The Shadows. Then he told me that they were working on a What We Do In The Shadows TV show and I DIED. A little bit. (SPOILER: The TV show is AMAZING!!)

Vampirina is All About Family, Girl Power, & Acceptance: A Chat With Chris Nee!

This experience was all thanks to Marvel Studios and Disney, but the opinions are 100% my own.

Chris Nee Vampirina Interview
(Photo Credit: Allison Waken / AllForTheBoys.com)

My daughters are head over heels in love with the latest addition to Disney Junior – Vampirina! We tuned in for the debut on October 1st and have been watching it ever since. It quickly became a favorite of mine as well because of the great lessons it teaches my girls. Even within the first episode it was clear that the creators of Vampirina wanted kids to know that everyone is the same on the inside. Yes, Vampirina is a vampire, but that doesn’t mean she can’t make friends. Every time she lets a friend in on her secret, they accept her for who she is.

Recently, I was given the opportunity to speak with the executive producer of Vampirina, Chris Nee, as well screen two new episodes. I am not ashamed to admit that this show has had me tearing up on more than one occasion. I suppose I am just really sensitive – and seeing the lessons Vampirina and her friends learn, make me happy. These are lessons that are important for my girls to learn as well, and I am thrilled that Vampirina is helping them do so.

Crafting Shows That Both Parents & Kids Enjoy

As I a mom with two young girls, I can vouch for the fact that sometimes there are kids’ shows that I just cannot stand. Vampirina is not one of those. This is a show that I can sit down and watch with my daughters. I find myself laughing and singing along with them – and yes, even watching it when they are not with me. We asked Chris what her secret is to writing shows that both parents and kids enjoy (if you didn’t know, she created Doc McStuffins!).

Chris let us know why this is something that is important to her. “I think it’s incredibly important because what I really want to do is bring families together to watch shows. Shows that so actively alienate the parents, create the separation in the enjoyment. For whatever reason, I have a great ability to remember what it felt like to be a kid, and that’s what I’ve tapped into for twenty years working in kids TV.”

(Photo Credit: Allison Waken / AllForTheBoys.com)

Chris then let us in on what she says is her secret. “When you ask someone who works in kids TV exclusively – who are you writing for – they’ll say ‘the kids.’ I know that’s the right answer, but I’m writing for myself. I’m trying to make myself laugh. I’m trying to work out my own stuff and remember my own childhood. Trying to remember those feelings and write the world that I hope we can live in. I’m also a mom. I certainly know what it’s like to want your kid to watch shows that the music is something you can stand because you’re gonna watch it a lot. And maybe there’s a couple of jokes for you, but everything needs to work for the kids first. If I give you guys something that’ll make you laugh along the way, I think it’s a great way to make it a universal experience.

Show Additions

You may not know this, but Vampirina is based on a children’s book series. Chris added a couple of characters when creating the show, Gregoria and Demi, and she told us why. “Gregoria and Demi I added to the cast because I really wanted the comic relief. And I really like intense specificity of character – you can see that on Doc [McStuffins] where everyone’s really solidly who they are. I wrote Gregoria for Wanda [Sykes] having no idea she would say yes. That character was the biggest leap of faith because she’s a very cantankerous character for a preschool show. There were moments where I had to say, ‘I promise you it works in my head, it works in my head.’ It’s gonna be her with this voice and Wanda’s voice is Wanda’s voice. There’s no missing that. The character works for me and I have so much fun writing her. And Demi is delightful to write for.

The Voice of Vampirina

Isabella Crovetti is the voice of Vampirina. She sings for her as well as talks – and wow! The first time I heard her sing I was blown away. She is really good. Chris actually brought her up in our interview because she has been impressed by her as well. “Can we talk about [Isabella’s] singing voice? She was probably eleven years old when she first came in to sing the songs that are coming out now. The first time we worked with her she came to a big recording studio. She walked into the middle of it and she stopped and said, ‘I need to warm up.’ I was like, ‘oh this kid’s a pro.’ in a good way. She just opened her mouth and we could have taken the first take. She’s a Broadway level singer who happens to live in LA and we get to take advantage of that.

Vampirina

How Can Vampirina Go Outside During The Day?

I have seen a lot of chatter online about the fact that Vampirina goes outside during the day. We asked Chris how that is possible. “It is a very intense sunblock and we do talk about it in the episodes. Obviously you have to find a way to get past that piece. There had originally been a line in the pilot, and it just got lost for time. There was so much we wanted to do emotionally in that episode. But it will come up later on and there will be episodes where if she goes outside, it’ll be very clear.

Vampirina’s Parents

One of the things I noticed right away is how affectionate Vampirina’s parents are – not only to her but to each other. This is something that Chris said she loves about the show. “I love this family and I love seeing a family that feels really real to me. In animation sometimes, it’s hard to have characters touch each other. The amount that the parents hug each other – you actually believe that they’re together – which sometimes you don’t get in weekly animation. A lot of that, honest to god, has to do with who you get to voice the characters, but it’s hard to have physical contact. We got so lucky with the cast. There’s just such a warmth to the family.”I try to create a world where you can have characters say I love you and you don’t go ‘ick'”

Vampirina Ghoul Girls
VAMPIRINA – “The Ghoul Girls” (Disney Junior)GHASTLY GAYLEL, VAMPIRINA, CREEPY, POPPY, BRIDGET, FRANKENSTACEY

Girl Power

Vampirina has two best friends – Bridget and Poppy. Girl power is a reoccurring theme in the show when the three of them team up (just wait until you see them make a band!). As a mom of two girls, that is something I love and appreciate. We asked Chris how that came about and why it was important to her. “We didn’t need another boy lead character. It is important to shine a light and bring representation that we know is sorely lacking on the screen. So, it’s definitely something that I feel passionately about and that will always be the case. I mean will there be a next character that’s a boy? It certainly could be a boy. I enjoy being able to bring out what I know girl character’s can be – which is anything and everything.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eabsZkwY0rc&feature=youtu.be

Acceptance

The other theme that I really like in Vampirina is acceptance. As I mentioned above, whenever she lets a friend know who she is, they accept her. This is a very important lesson for kids – especially with the way the world is right now. Chris agrees, and that is why she puts so much of it in to this show. “The show feels very 2017 to me. It is a show where we say, ‘she is different and sometimes that’s hard to be friends with.’ We’re not saying that she isn’t different, we aren’t saying that everybody’s exactly the same, and stuff isn’t being conveyed as a conflict because we’re coming from different perspectives. In fact, we’re saying that’s exactly what this is and yet you can still be friends. It’s important to be friends – it’s important to see each other from your perspective.”

Chris Nee Vampirina Interview
(Photo Credit: Allison Waken / AllForTheBoys.com)

She ended with something that brought some tears to my eyes. “Honestly, we need a little more of that in this world – facing stuff that is different. We have a huge country that’s really different. Maybe the only way that we’re gonna get someplace is to say, ‘you’re different from me but let’s hear each other and I still want to be your friend through it.’ For me, that’s what this show is about. Different is acceptable.

Kevin Feige Comments on THAT Spider-Man Line Plus Spills Details on Thor: Ragnarok & the MCU

This experience was all thanks to Marvel Studios and Disney, but the opinions are 100% my own.

Kevin Feige Thor Ragnarok Interview
(Photo Credit: Allison Waken / AllForTheBoys.com)

While in LA for the Thor: Ragnarok premiere, we were lucky enough to interview some of the cast and filmmakers. The day of our interviews we were surprised with an addition to that list, Kevin Feige. I was over the moon excited because he is the President of Marvel Studios and a brilliant man! I previously interviewed Kevin a few months ago at the Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 press event along with James Gunn. That still remains one of my most favorite interviews ever so I was eager to talk with him again.

THAT Line From Spider-Man: Homecoming

Let’s get this over with. While it wasn’t the first question we asked, it is the first one I want to talk about. If you saw Spider-Man: Homecoming than you know there was a line about bloggers in it. Tony Stark says “Behind this door are a bunch of journalists. Real ones – not bloggers.“. This caused a bit of an uproar in the blogging community – especially since we work really hard to promote their movies. If I am being totally honest, I got over it real quick. Don’t get me wrong, it upset me. But I felt like I had connected a bit with Kevin and I knew that he would not put that line in the movie maliciously. I wanted to give him a chance to set the record straight so I asked him if he had any comment on it.

Kevin Feige Thor Ragnarok Interview 5
(Photo Credit: Allison Waken / AllForTheBoys.com)

Kevin’s response really made me happy that I asked. “That was an ad lib – a comedic ad lib – from Mr. Downey. One of the many things he just says. Moments before that, he says something about a human dog hybrid and puppies and who knows what he’s talking about – it’s just funny. When we shot it, it just sort of went past me. We cut it together and only in the early screenings I went, oh I’m gonna hear about this. It was just him being funny.” It makes me feel better knowing that he realized it might not go over well – even though it was intended as comedy. After the interview, he even asked me if I was offended. I truly think Kevin loves and appreciates us bloggers, and did not mean any harm by approving that line.

An Exciting Time For Marvel

When Kevin first walked in the room, we asked him how it feels having Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok coming out in the same year. He said that it was pretty awesome, and he loves “that littler Peter Parker in high school is in the middle of all that.” As a total Marvel Fan Girl, this has been a dream year for me as well – and there are so many amazing things to come with Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and The Wasp, etc. Kevin then elaborated saying “It’s pretty cool and it indicates what I’ve always wanted people to understand – that just because something’s based on a comic doesn’t mean they’re all the same. [It] doesn’t mean they all inhabit the same exact tonal world.

Kevin Feige Interview
(Photo Credit: Allison Waken / AllForTheBoys.com)

The release of Avengers: Infinity War is coming up quick (someone pinch me!), and so we asked Kevin a little bit about that. “Infinity War is a pretty major meeting of the minds – Thor, in particular, with the Guardians. We’ve already shot some very fun scenes between them. The cosmic adventurers spend a lot of time together in that movie.” Eeek! When I heard that I started doing a dance on the inside. You guys all know how I feel about the Guardians, and I cannot wait to see them meet up with Thor! We, of course, asked about the Infinity War trailer and got told “Someday.” Sigh, at least we know it has to come out before May.

A Different Look For Thor

The look and feel of this Thor is much different than the first two. I love them all, but this one is hands down my favorite. We asked Kevin why there was such a difference in this one. “That was our idea perfected and improved by Taika [Waititi]. We wanted to, as we always do in our movies, go to a new place, to an unexpected place. Look at what we did with Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 [and] the third Captain American film. We always look at a third film, Infinity War in the case of Avengers coming up, as an opportunity to take the fans to a totally unexpected [and] fun place.

Kevin Feige Thor Ragnarok Interview 2
(Photo Credit: Allison Waken / AllForTheBoys.com)

He also added that Chris Hemsworthused to say, Captain America has got Iron Man in his movie, who am I getting? The fun thing about Thor is he’s got amazing characters in his own comics – Hela and Valkyrie. Thinking about who else we could bring in from the universe, very quickly we realized Hulk would be that guy. Seeing Thor and Hulk battle it out together is great. Seeing Banner and Thor being fish out of water is even better. Suddenly, you have this great dynamic between them – so we decided well, I guess. When we last saw [Hulk he was] on a quinjet heading up into the atmosphere. He kept going and he got caught in a worm hole and he ended up on Sakaar.

Kevin’s Favorite Avenger

Since Kevin is the President of Marvel Studios, he can’t pick favorites. But we asked him to anyways. His response, “I really don’t have a favorite. We’ve been so lucky that with each release, another one rises to the top. I read comments that now Thor is going to become people’s favorite Avenger after this movie. I love the I’m Mary Poppins shirt and what we did for Yondu and what James [Gunn] did for Yondu. Yondu on the arm over there (Yup, he looked over at me and pointed to my tattoo. Of course I had to include this quote!). The truth is, no, I don’t have a favorite.

Kevin Feige Thor Ragnarok
Myself with Kevin Feige at the Thor: Ragnarok LA premiere

He then added, “As we approach our ten year anniversary, it’s impossible not to look back on Iron Man one and what [Jon] Favreau did, and what Downey did, and continues to do, that really is the foundation for everything we’ve done. So that experience of Iron Man one was our first, so, in many ways, its the one I look back at quite fondly. But I don’t have favorites.

Finding Balance in the MCU

With so many amazing Marvel movies coming out, I can’t help but wonder how Kevin Feige keeps them all going. Well, he is not only a brilliant man – he hires them! He let us know hoe he balances it all by giving props to his Directors and team. “You hire Taika Waititi, you hire James Gunn, you hire John & Anthony Russo. I’ve got a incredible team at Marvel Studios and each film has a single embedded Executive Producer on it. Brad Winterbaum on [Thor: Ragnarok]. [He] has lived with Taika for the past two and a half years. Moved his family to Australia for months and months. They’re on it the whole time, so I’m always a text or a phone call away of knowing exactly what’s happening anywhere at any given time. So it’s a great privilege to have this team in place. Most of us have been together for almost the entire ten years at the studio, which is very unusual in Hollywood. It’s great.

A Stand Alone Hulk Movie?

**POTENTIAL SMALL SPOILER AHEAD**

Many of the Avengers have their own movies, but we don’t have one for Mark Ruffalo as Hulk. We asked Kevin if we would see one in the future – perhaps with the other Hulks such as Red Hulk and She-Hulk. Kevin responded, “We love them all. We think it would be fun to bring them to the screen. How we do that, I’m not sure. In terms of stand-alone Hulk movies, there are various contracts with studios that have to be worked out. I’m just so happy that we have the ability to include Hulk in these ensembles and what we already have planned. [Like the arc we start in Ragnarok] – an enhanced push and pull between Hulk and Bruce Banner for their body continues in the next Avengers film.

Haul-o-Ween at Disney California Adventure PLUS Throw A Cars 3 Viewing Party

This experience was all thanks to Marvel Studios and Disney, but the opinions are 100% my own.

Disney California Adventure Halloween

A couple of nights before I was heading off to LA for the Thor: Ragnarok press event, I was told some super exciting news! We would be going to Disney’s California Adventure & Disneyland – to have dinner at Cars Land and celebrate the fact that Cars 3 was coming out on digital and blu-ray. I had only been there once before, so I was really excited. We would only have a few short hours to explore, and there was so much I wanted to see. Especially since for the first time ever, Cars Land was all decorated for Haul-o-Ween. The decorations were incredible – and inspiring. They got me thinking about how I could throw a Haul-o-Ween themed viewing party for Cars 3 at home.

Cars Land Haul-o-Ween Disneyland
Joyce from Women and Their Pretties and myself on Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween.

Re-Imagined Rides for Halloween

There were so many great decorations in Cars Land – they really went all out. But that is not all that they did. They also transformed some of the rides! Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree became Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree and Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters became Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween! I had so much fun riding these with my friends while there. Probably what I was most excited for was a ride just outside Cars Land – Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout! While we were there, it changed to Monsters After Dark and was a ton of fun! I can’t stop thinking about this ride – I want to go back on it over and over!

Throw Your Own Haul-o-Ween Themed Viewing Party

Cars 3 hits digital today, which is perfect timing to create a Haul-o-Week themed viewing party for your friends and family! I have a Halloween fun kit for you that you can download. This kit includes a word find, a maze, and some pretty amazing Cars 3 pumpkin stencils. These stencils are really easy to use and kids will love make a Lightning McQueen pumpkin!

As far as decor for your party, I suggest picking up some traffic cones. These can be transformed in to spooky faces – and kids (and you!) will have a lot of fun decorating them. Just paint a spooky face and you are done! Don’t forget the Cars 3 toys and games! Kids can take a break from all the Halloween fun and play games like Piston Cup Showdown and Thunder Hollow Mud Madness. You could even put together fun prize packs for the winners of the games that include Halloween candy and Cars 3 toys.

Photos For Inspiration

Here are a few more photos of the decor at Cars Land. I hope they can help inspire you when getting ready for your Haul-o-Ween viewing party. Or better yet – head over to Disney California Adventure and check it out in person if you can!

More Rides in Less Time with MaxPass

Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout

We were lucky enough to be provided with guides so that we could walk right on rides while we were there. However, there is a new way that can help you get on as many rides as possible there called MaxPass. You can purchase Disney MaxPass in the Disneyland App and connect it to your ticket by scanning the barcode on the back. With MaxPass, you can reserve digital Disney FASTPASS selections right from your mobile device using the Disneyland app while you’re in the parks. And as soon as you use one at an attraction, you can immediately reserve another! Disney MaxPass also includes unlimited Photopass downloads for the day! Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders have the option of purchasing Disney MaxPass for the life of their current passport for $75. Signature Plus passholders will receive Disney MaxPass at no additional cost.

Cars 3 Viewing

Cars 3 is available on digital today – and of course, that will be a huge party of your viewing party. Gather everyone together and watch Cars 3 either before or after all your fun. In Cars 3, the legendary Lightning McQueen is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!

Why Marvel Fans Loved the Marvel Booth at New York Comic Con 2017

Thank you to 3Decades3Kids for attending NYCC for Mama’s Geeky and writing this article.

marvel booth lockjaw NYCC

Of all the booths on display at New York Comic-Con, our favorite was undoubtedly Marvel. While it may seem like a bit of a no-brainer that Marvel would be our top pick (given that we’re big fans of Marvel’s superheroes overall), choosing this booth as the best goes beyond our existing fandom. Marvel was a highlight of NYCC 2017 not only because of the iconic heroes and intrinsic good quality that have come to be associated with the brand, but because they took those things and utilized them to create a wide array of things for fans both new and old to see and to do throughout the weekend. Take a tour through Marvel’s booth with us, and you’ll see exactly what we mean.

The Gifted

The Stage

Like a beacon shining through the crowds of the Javits Center, the Marvel stage is one of the defining features of New York Comic-Con. This year, Lockjaw of The Inhumans was front and center, offering an excellent opportunity for selfies with your favorite cuddly intergalactic bulldog.

Marvel Day at Sea

Marvel’s stage was also host to plenty of activity throughout the weekend, including appearances from the casts of Marvel TV shows like Fox’s The Gifted, an interview with one of Disney Cruise Line’s captains for the brand new Marvel Day at Sea, and a demo of our next highlight, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2.

Marvel Super Heroes

As we mentioned above, TT Games Head of Design Arthur Parsons showcased gameplay of the upcoming Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 on the Marvel stage– but that wasn’t the only way to check out the game this year! Marvel’s booth featured a full display for the Lego title, including large-scale models of some of the more interesting playable characters, like a cowboy version of Captain America! Visitors also had the opportunity to try out Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 for themselves, more than a month ahead of its release on all major platforms on November 14!

Contest of Champions

Marvel NYCC Contest of Champions

While we’re discussing Marvel Gaming, we’d be remiss not to mention Contest of Champions. The popular fighting game-styled app continued to deliver fun and prizes for the brave, talented, and lucky. Those who tried out the game left with themed surprises like shirts, pins, and tote bags, and there were extra rewards for winning battles within the game as well.

As with Marvel’s approach to all of their products (whether movies, TV, games, or of course, comics) there was truly something for everyone at the Marvel booth this year at NYCC!

Why We Love Our Pley Disney Princess Box Subscription

Pley Disney Princess Box - Merida

As you likely know by now, my family and I are huge Disney fans. Several months ago we discovered a new Disney subscription box – the Pley Disney Princess box. It comes every two months and each box is themed to a Disney Princess. So far we have received Ariel, Rapunzel, and our latest box – Merida. This is something that my girls have been loving – and I think many kids would enjoy it. What a great gift for a Disney Princess fan this holiday season.

Inside the Box

Each box contains 4 to 6 Disney Princess toys, activities, and fashion accessories. In our Ariel box we got a nice pair of pajamas that my daughter asks to wear just about every night. There was also an Ariel doll and sunglasses. Not to mention the box came with instructions to turn it into a boat! Watch our latest unboxing video below to see what was included in our Merida box!

One of my favorite things about this box is that each item is something we will use time and time again. Even the activity book includes a princess story, making it something that we will keep when the activities are all completed. I also like that each box can become something fun with a little work, because that means less waste. Subscribe here!

Giveaway Alert

Enter to win a one month Disney Princess Pley Subscription using the Gleam form below! There will be TWO winners that will receive the Merida box. Be sure to check out my other giveaways while you are here and GOOD LUCK!
