DC’s Titans Season 3 dives right in to the drama with a seriously unexpected turn – and it only gets better from there as the Titans head to Gotham.
It is no secret that the first two season of DC’s Titans, although a good watch overall, are hit or miss when it comes to the episodes. Season 3 is refusing to follow down that same path and dives in headfirst with a heartbreaking twist to kick off Episode 1. And it only gets better from there. This season is bringing in new heroes and villains, and upping the ante when it comes to epic action sequences. Hold on tight, because it is just the beginning!
This review is based on the first three episodes of the season, so keep in mind my opinion could change as it goes on. However, so far season 3 has really stepped up its game. Right from the start I was sucked in and not going anywhere, and then, by the time the end of episode 3 hit, I was sold. It seems that the things that didn’t work in the first two seasons have been fixed for the most part, and DC is not playing around anymore.
Character Development
There is more character development for the Titans that we already have, but they are also doing a decent job of letting us know who the new characters are as well. It is great to see some more heroes and villains being pulled over from the comic books — specifically Tim Drake. The moment he was introduced, I was all in. Jay Lycurgo is phenomenal from the start, and seems to fully embrace his role in Titans. In the comic books, Tim Drake is commonly referred to as the best Robin because his skill set seems to include the best from Dick Grayson as well as from Jason Todd.
Something that I do wish had remains a mystery, but was instead confirmed at DC FanDome is the fate of Jason Todd in this upcoming season. For those that do not know about it, I will not reveal it, because I do think it is best to go in completely blind on that one. Let’s just say it makes for a VERY interesting story line, that is probably the most captivating part of Season 3 so far.
Back To Gotham
Bringing the gang back to Gotham was a smart move as it allows them to go more dark and more gritty, and at the same time explore new villains and other characters such as Barbara Gordon. DC’s Titans Season 3’s action scenes are great, and seem to be improved from previous seasons even. The biggest issue with Beast Boy seems to be on its way to being fixed – we need more than just a green tiger, DC. With a large ensemble cast it can sometimes be difficult to give them each their due, but at least with the first 5 episodes, Titans is doing a decent job this season.
It may be too early to tell for sure, but DC has stepped up their game and is determined to make sure Titans Season 3 is the best season yet. So far? They are certainly succeeding. There is some cheesy dialogue during some of the fights that might make some viewers giggle, but other than that, this one is better than seasons past. The fight choreography still needs a little help, but it is certainly heading in the right direction.
