The Sleepover on Netflix is a fun, action packed, and hilarious movie that the whole family is sure to love!
I am always looking for new movies that we can watch together for family movie night! Every Sunday night we sit down with a bucket of popcorn and enjoy a movie together, all four of us. Since my daughters are still fairly young, 7 and 9, sometimes this can be a challenge. Mainly because my husband and I want a movie that we will enjoy too. That is exactly what The Sleepover is — fun for the whole family!
Within the first few minutes I knew this was a movie I was going to enjoy. The very first scene is a young boy named Kevin telling his class a story about his family. Although it is clearly not about his family — it is the plot of The Martian. My husband and I were cracking up, and that was a great way to kick off the movie.
Kevin has a sister named Clancy, who is struggling with being the only girl in her grade without a cell phone. Especially when a cute boy asks for her phone number and she has to admit her mother, Margot, will not let her get a phone.
Ken Marino plays their father, Ron, and he is a bit of a dork. From the first moment he shows up he is clearly part of the comic relief, and he never disappoints. Every scene he is practically brought me to tears I was laughing so hard. I mean, who doesn’t love fart jokes?
The plot of the film is set up when Kevin has his friend Lewis over for a sleepover and they decide to camp outside. Meanwhile, Clancy is sneaking out of the house with her friend Mim to go to that cute boy’s party. Things take a turn when Ron and Margot are kidnapped by some criminals who reveal that Margot is not who she says she is.
She actually used to be a high end thief who went into witness protection when she turned on her boss. Margot (or should we say Matilda) leave clues for her kids to help track them down before she is knocked out and taken to convince her old partner, and fiance, to join the heist as well.

Throughout the movie the kids are searching for their parents and the parents are being forced to try to steal a VERY expensive crown. Of course Ron is not trained in this stuff but he is eager to help. He also wants to keep an eye on his wife and her very buff and handsome ex-fiance.
The Sleepover is filled with humor, action, and some serious hijinks! While it was a bit predictable, the wild ride did not disappoint. My entire family enjoyed this movie, and I know it is something we will watch time and time again.

Positive Lessons For Kids
Throughout the movie there are a lot of crazy things happening. But what I enjoyed about it is that within that are some really positive lessons for kids. Not the whole sneaking out thing of course, which I told my girls they better never do. Although, it did end up being for a good cause — to save their parents and all.
The main message my girls and I got from The Sleepover on Netflix is to believe in yourself. Kevin has a lot of confidence and embraces his funny side, but both Lewis and Clancy do not. Lewis never stands up to his mother and lets her not only embarrass him, he lets her dictate his life.
Clancy is an extremely talented musician who is too scared to share her gift with anyone else. Yes, she has some attitude towards her mother and her brother from time to time, but this feels like natural teenage behavior.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much confidence Ron seemed to have throughout the movie! Although he was clearly a little self conscious around his wife’s ex, he stood up to him quite often – providing us with the most hilarious lines in the movie.

Overall Thoughts
OK parents, let’s be honest here. Usually kids movies are ridiculously predictable. That doesn’t mean they are bad, but personally, I often see the ending coming from a mile away. Well, I thought I had The Sleepover figured out — but I didn’t.
There is a twist toward the end that I did not see coming at all! In fact, I paused it, backed it up, and watched the reveal again just to make sure I heard it correctly. My whole family was shocked and it made for a really great ending to the movie.
The Sleepover is a great family night movie that had us all laughing, rooting for the good guys, and even on the edge of our seats now and then. There are some pretty cool fight scenes and I think it was the perfect length, clocking in at about one hour and forty-five minutes. If you are looking for a movie the whole family will enjoy, stream The Sleepover on Netflix August 21st!
