The cast and writer/director of The New Mutants eased my mind when it came to concerns about it being too different from the comic books.
As a massive fan of the The New Mutants comic books I have been hoping that a lot of what we see in the movie will be taken from them. The trailers give me confidence that this is the case, however you never really know. Trailers can be deceiving. My mind was put at ease when I attended a virtual press event with the cast and writer/director of The New Mutants, to discuss the upcoming film.
Virtual Press Event Participating Talent:
- Maisie Williams (“Rahne Sinclair”)
- Anya Taylor-Joy (“Illyana Rasputin”)
- Blu Hunt (“Dani Moonstar”)
- Alice Braga (“Dr. Reyes”)
- Charlie Heaton (“Sam Guthrie”)
- Henry Zaga (“Roberto da Costa”)
- Writer/Director Josh Boone
The overall impression that I got was a lot of this movie is going to be pulled from the pages of the books. Of course, the characters, but also the essence of The New Mutants. Some of their backgrounds are a bit… complicated. They can be hard to explain, and especially to translate to the big screen. Writer/Director Josh Boone assured us that all characters will have their comic book backstories.
"We used everybody's original back story from the comics. but we went out of our way to ground those stories." – Josh Boone Writer/Director The New Mutants #NewMutants

Some Changes Were Made
I loved when Josh got into details about Lockheed. For those of you that know the comic books, you know he could be hard to explain. He is one of my favorite Marvel characters, an alien dragon, and was part of the Pet Avengers, and yes that is an amazing series – go buy it. He is usually connected to Kitty Pryde, who is not — as far as we know — in this film. In The New Mutants he will be with Magik, and I am very excited to see how this turns out and how he looks!
“We made Lockheed much more tied to [Magik] directly, in terms of her backstory. The way she gained this dragon in the comics, it came from space, Kitty Pryde got it… That’s also why we chose not to focus on a character like Magma.” – Josh Boone
Josh explained that they had to pick and choose things from the comic books carefully. For example, he knew they couldn’t bring in one of the members of the team, Magma, because it was such a far reach it would be hard to explain her to non-fans of the comics.
The Demon Bear Story Line
When talking about taking The New Mutants comic book story line that involves Dani’s Demon Bear, Josh Boone says he always dreamed of writing and directing it. He would glance and the comics and think “someday“. Lucky for him (and us!) he made a successful movie with a studio, and promptly begged them to let him make The New Mutants.
“I still vividly remember seeing the covers of The New Mutants comic book covers [with the Demon Bear]. They really captured my imagination and I thought about them for years.” – Joshua Boone
Now of course I haven’t seen this movie yet, but the vibes I have gotten from not only the footage, but this press event, have me thinking that we will get something as comic book accurate as possible. Without confusing those that don’t know the comics that is.
You know I will be back after I get to watch it and will let you know just how comic book accurate The New Mutants is!
Other Notable Highlights
I had so much fun watching the cast, from their homes, chat about The New Mutants. I am a massive Marvel fan and have been really looking forward to this movie for what feels like forever. Here are some of my favorite things I learned during The New Mutants virtual press junket.
- Some of the crew members were so scared after filming, they had to be escorted to their cars at night! The New Mutants was filmed at a real Asylum, and some even had weird encounters!
- Charlie had just learned to drive and decided to take everyone to see Baby Driver in the cinema. This ended up being an adventure for everyone as he couldn’t figure out how to put his headlights on — and was driving at night!
- Blu would love to play an adult version of Dani — does this mean we might get a sequel after all?!
- Henry Zaga said getting up on stage at Comic Con made him feel like he was a part of The Beatles!
- Blu’s favorite thing about Dani is her relationship with Rahne. Awwww….
