Superman Cast & James Gunn Reveal Their Reaction To The Suit

0

During the Superman teaser trailer event, the cast and writer/director James Gunn discuss creating David Corenswet’s Superman suit, and their reactions to it.

Superman suit David Corenswet

One of the most important things when creating a “comic book movie” is the suit. Say what you will, this is something the fans are going to latch on to, for good or for bad. Of course, the story must also be great, but making sure the suits look like they should is top of the list.

I was invited to a special event for the Superman teaser trailer, which included a Q&A session with James Gunn (writer/director), David Corenswet (Clark Kent / Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luther).

One of the topics that came up was David Corenswet’s Superman suit. He explained how he never really put the suit on for the first time because it was built through a lengthy process. Writer/director James Gunn weighs in and reveals what Corenswet said to make him change his mind about this version of the suit being so colorful. Nicholas Hoult also confesses his reaction to seeing Corenswet in the suit on set.

Cast & Filmmaker Reactions To Superman’s Suit

David Corenswet: People ask about the first time you put on the suit. When you have the amazing chance to build the suit from the ground up with an amazing costume department, you don’t put on the suit for the first time. You put on parts of it and then it gets fitted and more pieces get put in.

So for me, it was the first time that other people saw me in the suit. It’s like when you get a nice haircut and you forget about it but then you walk around and everybody’s like, whoa you look great for once. I walked on set and I had other people who saw me in the suit for the first time. So I got to see other people see Superman.

I didn’t feel like Superman, but it was so amazing watching my cast mates and the crew members, who are also getting to work on this amazing historic piece of media. The moments when they saw it for the first time or when they saw Superman fly for the first time, getting to witness them witness it.

The best thing is seeing kids see it. When people would bring their kids to set. Getting to see, first person, five, six-year-old kids see Superman. There’s nothing like it. It’s amazing.

Superman 2025

Nicholas Hoult: When I saw David in the costume, and I hate to admit it, it made me feel warm and fuzzy. Like a kid again. There was one scene where he flies into the set and I was watching and I had a little grin, a little private grin on my face, and I was like this is amazing. I turned around and I saw everyone else in the room with the same look on their face watching him. That’s the effect that he’s talking about, and it’s really special.

James Gunn: The thing that I think of so much is when we were designing the costume, I knew certain things were going to be different and I knew that I didn’t want to have it look like a wet t-shirt. I didn’t want to have a bunch of thick muscles in it. I didn’t want to have airbrushed abs on it. But it was really a long process of development.

We were standing in the room and it was freaking colorful and had the underwear and the whole thing and I was like, ugh, I don’t know. I said it’s so colorful and [David Corenswet] goes, yeah, he’s an alien from outer space who’s super powerful. He doesn’t want children to be afraid of him. And it touched me in the moment and it touches me now as I say it, is that is who he is and that’s where the costume comes from and that goes along with Jerry and Joe’s original vision hardening back to wrestlers and the circus and these other things.

That’s who Superman is. His costume is so colorful because he doesn’t want to scare children. He’s got red beams that come out of his eyes and he can blow over things with his breath.

Rachel Brosnahan: Superman & Lois “Work Hard, Play Hard, & Love Hard”

0

Rachel Brosnahan confesses that Superman and Lois are soulmates and that they both work hard, play hard, and love hard.

Superman 2025

Lois Lane and Superman will always be connected in the DC Universe, just as MJ and Spider-Man are. In James Gunn’s upcoming Superman, the extremely talented Rachel Brosnahan portrays Lois Lane. In the recently released teaser trailer, we see that her and Superman have a relationship, and even catch a glimpse at a kiss while floating in the air (their equivalent of Spidey’s upsidedown kiss).

I was invited to a special event for the Superman teaser trailer, which included a Q&A session with James Gunn (writer/director), David Corenswet (Clark Kent / Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luther).

Rachel Brosnahan admittedly cannot say much about Lois Lane’s relationship with Clark Kent/Superman, but she does confess that she thinks they are soulmates, and that they both have the same goals in mind.

Rachel Brosnahan Says Superman & Lois Are “Soulmates”

Superman suit David Corenswet

Rachel Brosnahan: They’re soulmates. They’re united in the fact that they are both in the relentless pursuit of truth and justice, but they approach the world in totally different ways.

She’s somebody, because of her profession but also because of who she is, she questions everything. She questions everyone. She’s trying to see around every corner and that’s the way that she faces the world.

And Superman is just radically present in every moment. He solves every issue that’s directly in front of him. I think the ways that they are opposite is something that is fun to watch. It’s fun to watch them bump up against each other sometimes…in more than one way. And then it’s fun to watch the way in which they really are united. That’s a little bit of a nothing burger of an answer but they both work hard and play hard and love hard.

James Gunn: “Superman Is About Kindness”

0

During the Superman teaser trailer event, writer/director and DC CEO James Gunn explains that the 2025 film is about kindness.

Superman 2025

I was invited to a special event for the Superman teaser trailer, which included a Q&A session with James Gunn (writer/director), David Corenswet (Clark Kent / Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luther). Gunn described the film as being about kindness and how everyone should be just that, kind.

Even if we do not agree with others, there is no need to be mean to them. This is something that the world could certainly use more of these days.

James Gunn Says Superman Is “A Movie About Being Good”

Superman suit David Corenswet

I think that it is a movie about kindness. It is a movie about being good. I remember talking to these guys when we had our cast dinner the night before we started shooting, and I’m like, at the end of the day, the world doesn’t always seem to have so much good in it. And this movie has to truly be that. And for it to truly be that means that we had to be good to each other, we had to be good to the crew, and then it had to be that authentically. So for me, the movie is about that more than anything else.

I think that’s what “taking me home” is all about. When I watched the trailer and the movie, we do have a battered version of Superman at the beginning. I think that that is our country. I believe in the goodness of human beings and I believe that most people in this country, despite their ideological beliefs and their politics, are doing their best to get by and trying to be good people.

Despite what it may seem like for the other side, no matter what that other side might be. I think this movie is about that. It’s about the basic kindness of human beings. And that can be seen as uncool, and it can be seen as under siege when some of the darker voices are some of the louder voices. That’s what happens when you let the internet seem like it’s the world, when it’s not the world, the world is us.

I live in a very rural part of Georgia and I see the kindness and the beauty of the people every day who don’t share all the same political beliefs as I do. But I think that’s what the movie is about, the basic fundamentals of human beings all over the world.

James Gunn Confesses Superman’s Relationship With Krypto Is “Complicated”

0

At the Superman teaser trailer event, James Gunn reveals that Superman’s relationship with Krypto is “complicated.”

Superman 2025 - Superman & Kryptp

The opening sequence of the Superman teaser trailer shows Superman falling from the sky, clearly having been beaten up during a fight. He is battered, bruised, and beaten, mustering all the energy he can to whistle for man’s best friend, his dog Krypto. He then asks Krypto to take him home and hands him a piece of his cape to pull him by.

I was invited to a special event for the Superman teaser trailer, which included a Q&A session with James Gunn (writer/director), David Corenswet (Clark Kent / Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luther).

Superman’s Relationship With Krypto Is “Complicated”

When asked about the decision to open the teaser trailer with this shot, Gunn explains “We’re seeing a little bit of a different side of Superman than what we’ve seen normally on screen and this movie, at the end of the day, is not about power.”

He goes on to detail that Clark Kent is a person who is struggling with his day-to-day life, something that Gunn thought would be a cool place to start. In terms of his superdog, however, Gunn says “his relationship with Krypto is complicated. He’s not nearly the best dog you’ve seen. There’s a lot more to Krypto.”

As a dog lover, this is a tough sentence to swallow. Krypto is a dog with superpowers. He can fly. Surely, that would make his relationship with Clark different from any other pet-owner relationship, but I would be devastated to see him turn his back on Superman. We all go to our animals for comfort. They are a part of the family and are always there when we need them most.

Gunn continues, “I also thought that it was a way to say that yes, we’re embracing all of the Superman mythology. There’s a way that superhero movies have taken these characters and said okay, yeah, it’s Batman but it’s not any of the other stuff. It’s Superman but it’s not any of the other stuff. It’s boom, boom, boom, boom.”

“But he lives in a world with superheroes. This is an alternative history fantasy world where superheroes exist but it’s also incredibly grounded. It’s about real people having real lives who just happen to be metahumans. Superman exists. He has friends who are other superheroes. He has people he doesn’t get along as well with who are other superheroes. He’s got a flying dog.”

All will be revealed about Superman and Krypto’s relationship when Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025. I was already excited, but the new teaser trailer has me all in.

Nicholas Hoult “Felt Giddy” Reading The Superman Script

0

Nicholas Hoult confesses his reaction when he first read the Superman script and it is priceless – “I felt giddy.”

Superman 2025

Nicholas Hoult is going to make the perfect Lex Luther. We only see him a few times in the Superman teaser trailer, but take a look back at his career and it is apparent that he commits to a role when given it. Just in the last few months, he has delivered three masterful performances in The Order, Juror No. 2, and Nosferatu.

I was invited to a special event for the Superman teaser trailer, which included a Q&A session with James Gunn (writer/director), David Corenswet (Clark Kent / Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luther).

During the event, Nicholas Hoult reflected back on when he first read the script for Superman. Writer/director James Gunn is also a master of his art, so it should come as no surprise that Hoult claims he “felt giddy.”

Nicholas Hoult’s Reaction To First Reading The Superman Script Is Priceless

Nicholas Hoult: The script to begin with was so unique and fun. The world was vivid and just full of so many exciting characters, moments, and emotions. Reading it I felt giddy. I was like this is exciting, this is new and a different take. Then, on set with all of James Gunn’s collaborators, he’s inviting and warm. He knows exactly what he wants and is clear on that, but also is open to ideas with everyone. It’s a wonderful environment to work in because no matter who you, are if you bring a good idea and James likes it, then it will be incorporated.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Review: The Best of the Trilogy?

3

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is packed with Easter eggs, action, heart, and laugh-out-loud jokes. Shadow fans will be thrilled with the story he is given.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Review: The Best of the Trilogy?
Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Knuckles (Idris Elba) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the best yet, which is shocking to say because the first two movies are fantastic. Just when you think they cannot get any better, they do. Somehow the filmmakers have figured out the perfect combination of ingredients. There are plenty of Easter eggs and references for long-time Sonic fans.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Review: The Best of the Trilogy?
Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

The humor hits for kids and adults alike (there are a few jokes for older audiences that will fly over younger ones’ heads). The action sequences are thrilling, the pacing is on point (never a lull with Sonic!), and the visuals, in particular Sonic and his friends, look incredible.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Review: The Best of the Trilogy?
James Marsden as Tom and Tika Sumpter as Maddie in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

There are constant messages about love, friendship, and teamwork. Lessons to be learned include listening to your heart, doing the right thing (even when no one is looking), and supporting those around you. Sonic, Tom, Maddie, Knuckles, and Tails are a chosen family, and seeing it warms the heart.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Review: The Best of the Trilogy?
Sonic (Ben Schwartz) in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

Think all the way back to the very first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer, there is no way you thought we would be here, not only with a third movie coming out but with them being some of the genuinely best family movies ever made.

The filmmakers took the criticism and went back to the drawing board, giving fans the Sonic design we all deserve. Ben Schwartz was the perfect choice to voice the Blue Blur, as he is a master of comedic timing and improvisation.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Review: The Best of the Trilogy?
Jim Carrey as Ivo Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

Of course, the legendary Jim Carrey is also the perfect casting as Dr. Ivo Robotnik. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, he takes on another role, Gerald Robotnik, Ivo’s grandfather. There are many scenes where he is literally playing opposite himself. Of course, there was a stand-in for filming purposes and certain scenes, but there is no doubt that Carrey is a master of comedy when you watch this movie.

There is a lot of physical comedy for both Gerald and Ivo. To say that I was laughing until my cheeks hurt is an understatement. Carrey is so good at involving his entire body in his art, and he will never, ever, shy away from something that makes the gag that much funnier. With him taking on two characters in Sonic 3, the comedy is brought to a whole new level.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Review: The Best of the Trilogy?
Shadow (Keanu Reeves) in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

One thing that this franchise has consistently been brilliant at is bringing in a new character from the Sonic-verse in each new film. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and newcomer Shadow (incredibly voiced by Keanu Reeves). Shadow is a fan favorite character, so it is important to “get him right”. Fans will be thrilled to know that they keep his origin story very spot on. There are a few tweaks here and there, which really is just to lean more on the family friendly side of things (if you know, you know).

There is a lot of emotion here. Without spoiling anything, he has a dark past. One of the major themes this movie draws attention to is the fact that we are a product of our upbringing and that one small change in our past could drastically effect our future. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has several scenes that will not just tug at your heartstrings, they will have you tearing up.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Review: The Best of the Trilogy?
Jim Carrey as Ivo Robotnik and Sonic (Ben Schwartz) in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is everything I wanted it to be. The action sequences are incredible and intense, leaving viewers clinging to the edge of their seats. There is not one joke that falls flat – each and everyone lands. This movie is laugh-out-loud funny. At the same time, there are quite a few emotional moments to unpack. Sonic goes through it in this movie. So much so that you are going to want to reach through the screen and give him a hug. There are themes of family, friendship, and even grief.

To no one’s surprise, there is a mid-credit and end-credit scene in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Both of which are extremely important to the rest of the franchise. If you are not on your knees begging Paramount to green light Sonic 4 after witnessing these, then I don’t think you can even call yourself a fan.

Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) Review: A Disappointing Prequel

0

While Mufasa: The Lion King looks pretty, it also suffers from weak music, a broken-up story, and a questionable portrayal of Scar’s origins.

Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) Review: A Disappointing Prequel
(L-R): Young Rafiki (voiced by Kagiso Lediga) and Mufasa (voiced by Aaron Pierre) in Disney’s MUFASA: THE LION KING. Photo courtesy of Disney. © 2024 Disney Enterprises Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Mufasa: The Lion King is better than the 2019 live-action remake of the animated classic, The Lion King. But if we are being honest, that movie did not set a high bar. As a shot-for-shot remake that brought nothing new to the table, it is by far my least favorite of the Disney live-action movies. I wanted to enjoy Mufasa. Knowing that technology has advanced and that this would be a completely new story piqued my interest. And then I watched it.

This movie explores the “untold origin” of Mufasa and Scar (formerly Taka). That said, it doesn’t exactly line up with the original film. In The Lion King, Mufasa comes from a line of nobility. It is mentioned. It is canon. However, in Mufasa: The Lion King, he is saved by Taka after being swept away from his parents. His family was not royalty, but Taka is the heir to the throne of his pack. Taka’s pride (reluctantly) takes Mufasa in, however, he is forced to live with the women (what a horrible fate…) and hunt with them instead of lying around all day with the men.

(L-R): Taka (voiced by Theo Somolu) and Mufasa (voiced by Braelyn Rankins) in Disney’s live-action MUFASA: THE LION KING. Photo courtesy of Disney. © 2024 Disney Enterprises Inc. All Rights Reserved.

The song, “I Always Wanted A Brother” is sort of the “Hakuna Matata” of this film, meaning as Taka and Mufasa sing together, they grow up. This is the transitional song, and, unfortunately, the last time this movie is any good. There are bits and pieces of bright moments that shine through in the second and third acts, but for the most part, it just gets worse and worse.

Pretty instantly after they grow up, there is a major threat to their pride from outsiders – the lions who do not look like their families (they are albino lions) and so they are shunned. Obviously, this makes them extremely evil, terrifying, and vengeful against any other lions. Taka and Mufasa are sent off to continue the bloodline elsewhere – yes, because they don’t even live in Pride Rock yet. In fact, they aren’t even so sure it exists.

Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) Review: A Disappointing Prequel
(L-R): Afia (voiced by Anika Noni Rose), Mufasa (voiced by Braelyn Rankins), and Masego (voiced by Keith David) in Disney’s live-action MUFASA: THE LION KING. Photo courtesy of Disney. © 2024 Disney Enterprises Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Along the way, they find Sarabi, whose pack has also been assaulted by the outsiders. She has Zazu with her, and the group pretty quickly decides it makes more sense for them to travel together, in search of paradise, instead of separately. Even though they should be miles ahead of the outsiders, the other lions continuously catch up to them way faster than they should.

The song, “Bye Bye”, which Kiros (the king of the outsiders) sings, is the worst of the bunch. The lyrics are childish – people at my screening were literally laughing at it. What happens after this song, presumably, is extremely dark. So much so that they do not even show it on screen, and only sort of hint to it.

Still, at least these animals emote, the lips (for the most part) line up with the dialogue spoken (even if the dialogue is lacking). They look good and the backgrounds look pretty. It also should be noted that the chemistry between Aaron Pierre (Mufasa) and Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Taka / Scar) is great.

Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) Review: A Disappointing Prequel
Kiros (voiced by Mads Mikkelson) in Disney’s live-action MUFASA: THE LION KING. Photo courtesy of Disney. © 2024 Disney Enterprises Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Kiros never really felt threatening to me. Perhaps that is because I knew that Mufasa, Taka/Scar, and Sarabi, were all going to make it out alive because of their roles in The Lion King. One of the things that bothered me the most, is that Taka’s “decent into evil” is nearly instantaneous (and the reasoning behind it is… offensive to say the least). In one split second, he is suddenly not the same character we have spent the entire movie with.

If you have listened to the songs, you know that one of the lines in “Brother Betrayed” is literally – “I’m next in line, she should be mine.” Sure Disney, women have no right to choose who they want to be with. They are clearly property for the royal men to decide what to do with.

Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) Review: A Disappointing Prequel
(L-R): Pumbaa (voiced by Seth Rogen) and Timon (voiced by Billy Eichner) in Disney’s live-action MUFASA: THE LION KING. Photo courtesy of Disney. © 2024 Disney Enterprises Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Because Mufasa: The Lion King is actually a story being told by Rafiki, every so often we cut back to the cave, where he is talking to Pumbaa, Timon, and Kiara (Simba & Nala’s daughter). This is clearly meant to provide comedic relief, because every time we go there, Timon and Pumbaa make jokes about what has been going on in the story. These are sometimes meta (talking about going to see the Broadway show of The Lion King) and almost never funny.

In fact, these moments pull viewers out of the story every time they happen, doing the opposite of what they are likely there to do. This breaks up the plot, making it really hard to be invested.

Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) Review: A Disappointing Prequel

Mufasa: The Lion King looks pretty, I will give it that. But it suffers from weak songs and too many decisions that alter the beloved classic. After the first twenty minutes or so, it starts to go downhill, and never goes back up. There are several plot holes and things that, honestly, just do not make any sense – especially knowing how The Lion King ends up. The movie clocks in at just under two hours, but it feels longer. Much longer.

All of that said, it is better than 2019’s The Lion King. See it for yourself when it hits theaters on December 20. Hopefully you enjoy it more than I did.

Sarah Bromberg On Navigating Diddy Controversy During The Honorable Shyne

0

Music Supervisor Sarah Bromberg discusses the challenges of navigating the Diddy controversy in order to complete The Honorable Shyne.

The Honorable Shyne interview

The Honorable Shyne tells the remarkable story of Moses “Shyne” Barrow, the Grammy Award-winning musician turned politician. A rising star in the late 1990s, Shyne’s promising rap career was cut short after being charged in a high-profile New York nightclub shooting, along with rap impresario Sean “Puffy” Combs. This documentary provides an intimate look at Shyne’s personal evolution as he navigates fame, incarceration and a return home to Belize, where he finds new purpose and strives to lead his country to a brighter future.

In this interview with Music Supervisor Sarah Bromberg, she discusses how she got into this line of work, the challenges that she faced when putting this documentary together (especially what was going on with Diddy in the news at the time), and her upcoming project, Long Bright River.

Can You Talk About How You Got Into This Career?

I was working in the music industry and it was not a great time in the music industry. This was my first job out of college and I had starry eyes, but it was during the dawn of Napster and LimeWire and digital. So, the music industry hadn’t quite caught up. It was a lot of doom and gloom at that time.

I got into it because I wanted to support artists, make artists happy, be there for them to create their art. It was more making artists sad than making them happy. And I was like, oh, this is not what I wanted. But the one bright spot that we would have would be if we would get a sync placement for these small artists. One placement could recoup their whole album.

At that time I started to learn what a music supervisor was. And I was like, oh, that seems like a career that’s not doom and gloom and I would actually be doing what I want to be doing, which is making artists happy. I’ve always loved music and picture together. Eventually, several years later I was able to move into the advertising music world.

How Did You End Up Working On The Honorable Shyne?

The film is produced by our sister company Color Creative. So with projects that are produced by our sister’s company, they generally try to bring in us to be music supervisors on it. Talitha Watkins, who was executive producer, she brought us in and I ended up being the person to take the project amongst the supervisors there at radio, but I’m super excited about it. Obviously it’s a really dope project.

This was in early 2023. Our first meeting on this project was a long time ago. It was a very different landscape at the time. But I did know Shine. I remember Shyne from when he first put his album out, and, of course, I remember everything that happened with him, with the shooting and him going to jail. So it was shocking to hear that he’s now a political leader in Belize.

I was like, wait, I really do want to know about this story. Please do tell me more. I was really excited to hear about it. Cause you know, like many people I’m sure, had no idea what happened to Shyne after he got out of jail. It was quite shocking to find out that that’s where he was. I was like, wow, this is a great story. I’m super excited to work on this project.

They were just entering into production. I think they had already shot some stuff. They were still shooting. But yeah, that’s how I came to the project. It was very, very early. It’s an incredible story that he has to tell. And I was just so excited to be able to be a part of it. I just was like, wow, the world is going to be really shocked to see how you ended up where you are.

Is It Difficult To Widdle Down Which Songs You Are Going To Use?

Shyne has two main albums out. And so we sort of were pulling all the creative from those albums. There is certain priorities. Obviously we wanted to use Bad Boys. That’s his biggest song. That was an essential song. And then the other songs, they shifted, but it was basically creative based on what the cuts were doing. So as the cuts expanded, as the cuts changed, as they shifted, some of the songs fell in and some fell out.

It’s based on the time in his life of the part of the story that we’re telling, what the song is saying, how the song was significant to his life. So those were all the pieces that played into creative decisions. But then of course, there’s also the clearance part of it, which when it comes to late nineties hip hop, it can be very notorious for being tough to clear for a litany of reasons.

All the creative notes were taken and then we had to then go do our research and figure out who are the owners of these songs? Are they clearable? Is everybody okay with everybody? Is everybody going to say yes to something like this? So there was a lot, there was literally more than a year of legwork that went into researching some of these songs. And some of them ended up in a place of, no, we actually can’t use this song for one reason or another, whether it’s an uncleared sample or a writer who’s not happy with the splits or whatever. There’s producers who didn’t get credits.

There’s a litany of reasons that we would not be able to use songs. And some of those did come up. So then it’s looking at the rest of the list, what else can cover this creative moment in the film.

Sarah Bromberg On Navigating Diddy Controversy During The Honorable Shyne

What Was It Like Dealing With The Diddy Controversy While Putting The Honorable Shyne Together?

It was very much overlapped. It was not in the beginning of the film. We were just moving along and their relationship had been mended, and so we were very comfortable with the clearances on that end, just knowing that the bridge was built back between the two of them. So obviously as we got later into 2023, things started to shift. That was a big concern. We had not started clearing any of the songs yet because we were doing a deal that we really needed to know, the type of deal that we were doing, we needed to know what all the uses would be before we went to get everything cleared.

So we had not started actually, we had done research, but we had not started actually moving on sending the paperwork out yet. And so as the events began to unfold and they were very much a snowball, there was one thing, it was a trickle and it got bigger and bigger and bigger. And it just honestly, still to this day, keeps getting bigger.

It was very concerning and scary. Shyne’s music is essential to the film. We absolutely had to include his music in order to really properly tell his story. I don’t know how we could have released this film with no Shyne music in it. So it was a very scary time. And we were so lucky. We have such great partners at the labels and at the publishers who worked really closely with us. It did not happen quickly. It definitely took a long time.

Once we were ready to go ahead and send our paperwork out, there was a long time between sending our requests out and getting the actual approvals in. That was a very stressful time. We were using any connections that we had from our side, from our community, to reach out to anyone that we could on the other side to make sure that the importance of the film was expressed. And that obviously it just doesn’t make sense to make a film without Shyne’s music. So we just really needed everybody to approve. And they did.

All the approvals came through. We did not have, aside from clearance issues, we had no songs that were denied for any other reason. So we’re super grateful that everybody who was on their side, who was dealing with a lot because of the events that were unfolding, they were able to come together and realize the importance of him being able to use his own music in the film.

This film is not about Diddy. It’s not about his events. This is about Shyne. This is the other thing we kept expressing to them. This is not a film about that. We’re not making a film about whatever he’s going through. We’re making a film about Shyne and his journey. And Diddy is intricately woven into that journey.

His part of the story is told, of course, but then we leave it there. We leave it where it happens and we move on from it. We continue to tell Shyne’s story because his story continues as we know now after his time in jail, after he was linked to Diddy, he has a whole other life now. And we tell that story too.

Would You Say That Was Your Biggest Challenge When Getting This Documentary Done?

Yeah, it was a hundred percent the biggest challenge and, now reflecting on it, I’m like, well, it all worked out. So it’s okay. But it was definitely tough.

We were in the thick of it and obviously had no idea that this was going to happen and then where it was going to go after it happened and how it was going to continue to unfold and all the way up to an arrest. That whole section was, when we were clearing the songs, it was late 2023 until basically August of this year.

What Can You Tease About Your Upcoming Project, Long Bright River?

I’m so excited about this project. It’s different from anything I’ve done. I haven’t done a drama like this before, so I’m super excited for everybody to see it. It’s called Long Bright River. It’s based on the book of the same name. It’s a murder mystery that takes place in Philadelphia.

It’s very Philly, the music is Philly, and the scene is very Philly. Amanda Seyfried plays a cop whose sister has disappeared. She’s trying to both investigate that and also a series of murders of some of the working girls of the streets there. It’s a crazy thriller that unfolds.

There are so many shocking twists and turns. My jaw dropped many times reading the script and watching the cuts. So it’s really, really good. It’s super enthralling. Out on Peacock. I’m not sure if we know the date yet. I think it’s in the spring. I’m very, very excited about that one. And Amanda is amazing in it.

Her character plays English horn, and so she learned it and she really played it. She’s so talented. It’s crazy. She’s such an amazing talent, just acting and everything and her commitment. She’s really dope. So I’m very much excited for it.

About The Honorable Shyne

The Honorable Shyne tells the remarkable story of Moses “Shyne” Barrow, the Grammy Award-winning musician turned politician. A rising star in the late 1990s, Shyne’s promising rap career was cut short after being charged in a high-profile New York nightclub shooting, along with rap impresario Sean “Puffy” Combs.

Shyne was convicted in 2001 and sentenced to ten years in prison, while Combs was acquitted. After prison, Shyne reemerged in his native Belize, where he transitioned from music to politics, ultimately becoming the Leader of Opposition Party. His journey is one of redemption, resilience, and transformation.

This documentary provides an intimate look at Shyne’s personal evolution as he navigates fame, incarceration and a return home to Belize, where he finds new purpose and strives to lead his country to a brighter future.

The Honorable Shyne is streaming now on Hulu.

September 5 Review: Completely Captivating, But Haunting

0

September 5 can best be described as a journalistic thriller, showcasing that humans are not perfect while detailing the tragic events of that day.

September 5 review

There is something about movies that tells the story of real-life events that makes them that much more relatable. Admittedly, I had heard of the hostage crisis during the 1972 Munich Olympics, but did not know much about it. September 5 details the events of that horrific day in history from the journalists’ perspective. The result is a suspenseful, intense, thriller, that also depicts the flaws in humanity.

That day was the first time that something like this was broadcast live across the world. Because of this, there was no precedence and no one really knew how to handle it. What can you show on live television? What should you shy away from? Keep in mind that the parents of these hostages will be watching, so what should be done to respect them? So many questions and absolutely no answers.

September 5 review

The film takes place in, more or less, one newsroom. The journalists who are in charge of covering the hostage situation are, in actuality, from the sports team. So, not only are they experiencing something no other journalists have before, they are used to covering sporting events. This adds even more pressure, which bleeds through to the viewers in a way that will have them on the edge of their seats (even if they know the outcome).

September 5 is one of the best-paced films of the entire year, there is no doubt about that. It wastes absolutely no time getting into the nitty-gritty of it all and then breezes by in a cool ninety minutes. The editing is outstanding. Even though nearly the entire movie takes place in one room, things are kept interesting and intriguing. It never slows down.

As a journalist myself, I often put myself in the shoes of the people on screen. What would I do? What decisions would I make? It is hard to say unless you are actually in the situation that these people are in. Seeing the way things were done back then, how they were able to rewire the phone so that it could be heard live over the air, every little detail is interesting in its own way.

September 5 review

The entire cast is incredible. They bring these people to life in a way that feels simple and natural. Viewers will instantly believe them. Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Leonie Benesch, Ben Chaplin, Benjamin Walker — they all bring something to the table. On top of that, whoever made the call to use actual news footage to help tell the story is brilliant.

There are a few jokes weaved in to throw in some much-needed comedic relief at times, but overall September 5 is a chilling emotional. Make no mistake, this movie is a thriller, and the best one of the year at that. It is intense and unsettling. There are moments that moved me to tears simply because I felt so connected to these people and the news story they were telling.

September 5 is haunting. It is unsettling. But it is also a fantastic watch. If you can, see this one the big screen, in a room full of people, because, trust me, you are going to want to have people around you when the dust settles. It is that unnerving.
