A Complete Unknown Review: The Best Of The Year?

0

A Complete Unknown is undoubtedly one of the best films of the year – if not the best- thanks to incredible acting and musical performances.

I should start this review off by noting that I knew almost nothing about Bob Dylan going into A Complete Unkown. Of course, I had heard his music before and could recognize his voice just about anywhere, but I did not know about his life or his rise to fame. I certainly did not know about the 1965 Folk Festival, which ends up being the climax of the flim.

This movie follows Bob Dylan’s life from 1961 to 1965. It details his songwriting and his decision to “go electric” at the 1965 Folk Festival, despite the board not wanting him to do so. Timothée Chalamet brilliantly portrays Dylan, truly becoming the singer, becoming more and more unrecognizable as the film goes on.

Bob Dylan’s tracks are not used in the film, but rather these are actual performances by the actor. The same can be said for the other singers that are portrayed in A Complete Unknown. This brings an authenticity to it, and is likely a large part of why the movie works as well as it does. There are intimate moments of Dylan writing in his room in his boxers, but at the same time, we also see him on stage in front of a sold out crowd.

A Complete Unknown review

Something I learned from watching A Complete Unknown is that Bob Dylan never wanted to be put in a box. Why should he have to define his genre of music? Can’t he just write and perform whatever he wants too without a label? Honestly, this reminds me of Taylor Swift’s style, as we have seen her jump and blend genres. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. There is a clear reason why Bob Dylan’s music is so popular, so just let him do his thing.

A Complete Unknown review

Elle Fanning plays Bob Dylan’s love interest (well, one of them), Sylvie Russo. This is the changed name of real life love interest Suze Rotolo. Fanning is exceptional, per usual, her chemistry with Chalamet is electric. No matter if they are showing affection or fighting, the two are captivating to watch.

One scene in particular, towards the end of A Complete Unknown, left me in tears. It became so easy to become invested in these two and their relationship. As someone who did not know the outcome of their story going into this movie, I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened.

A Complete Unknown Edward Norton

Another standout in the film is Edward Norton, who plays Pete Seeger, a real life folk singer who was one of Bob Dylan’s inspirations. When I tell you that this entire cast – lead and supporting – come together to make something unforgettable and special, I mean it. Norton and Chalamet have an intriguing dynamic.

Seeger takes Dylan under his wing at first, but it isn’t long before Dylan’s fame explodes, almost leaving Seeger in the dust. This culminates into Norton’s Seeger more or less being town between the past and the future, in terms of the creation of music and art.

I cannot talk about A Complete Unknown without mentioning Monica Barbaro’s portrayal of Joan Baez. She also has electric chemistry with Chalamet’s Bob Dylan – especially during their musical performances together. Whenever she opens her mouth to sing in this film, I literally get goosebumps. She is an extreme talent and could certainly be a singer as well as an actress should she choose to.

The back and forth of their relationship, and the way that it shapes the art they create together, is one of the many things that had me completely invested in this film.

A Complete Unknown review

I want nothing more than the soundtrack of A Complete Unknown on vinyl. The musical numbers have all stuck with me ever since watching this film for the first time, and I do not see them leaving me any time soon. The cast is phenomenal. One of the best ensembles of the year, hands down.

Of course, I cannot speak on how Bob Dylan fans will feel about this movie as I went into it not really knowing much about him. However, despite his imperfections, A Complete Unknown has made me a Dylan fan.

Undoubtedly one of the best films of the year. Timothée Chalamet brilliantly portrays Bob Dylan, while the supporting cast delivers their best-ever performances. Captivating musical performances are the icing on the cake. A truly awe-inspiring must-watch.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Review

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a great addition to the iconic franchise, delivering a deeper exploration of lore, despite its flaws.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Review

Tolkien fans rejoice, there is a new addition to the iconic franchise – The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. This animated feature will likely be the introduction to The Lord of the Rings for a new generation. There is a lot to love about this film, although it does have its flaws, as well.

Based on just a few pages of text, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim tells the story of Hera (who Tolkien called the unnamed daughter in his works) and details the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand. Fans know where things will end up, but that doesn’t make the journey any less exciting.

Thanks to an incredibly talented voice cast – Brian Cox (Helm), Gaia Wise (Hera), and Luca Pasqualino (Wulf) – viewers will instantly love or hate these characters. As the story continues on, the emotion that is put behind them is easily one of the best parts of the movie.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Review

The filmmakers made the decision to tell this story using anime-style animation. As someone who loves anime, I feel was the right choice. That said, some people do not like this style and will likely find issues with it. There are a few times where it feels flat, but overall, I find it to be a gorgeous way to tell this empowering and heartbreaking story.

I have two young daughters, so any time there is a strong woman on screen that they can look up to, I am all for it. Hera is exactly that. She is willing to do anything to protect her family, and her people, and seeing her go the extra mile, even when she is exhausted, is inspiring.

The story that is told throughout this film is heartbreaking at times. War is in the title of the film, so it should come as no surprise that there are several battles throughout. These are some of the best animated moments. The Rohirrim love their horses, and animating that many of them is no easy fit – but the team pulled it off without a hitch.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Review

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is not without its cameos from characters, but also from actors whose voices you should recognize. I do not want to ruin the surprise, so I will just say that two in particular were very exciting to hear in a scene together. That moment warmed my heart and made me smile.

The biggest issue with this film is the length. It clocks in at over two hours, which is long for an animated feature. There were certainly some parts that could have been trimmed. If it was under two hours, I would have had no real complaints about The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. My youngest daughter had a few moments where she started to fade and zone out because of the length. That said, my teen was fully engaged.

Overall The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a wonderful addition to the franchise. Anime fans will love the style of animation and action fans will be pleased with the battles. While it goes on too long, the story is still an entertaining one.

About The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

Laufey’s A Night at the Symphony: Hollywood Bowl Review

0

Laufey’s A Night at the Symphony: Hollywood Bowl is an enchanting blend of orchestral arrangements, breathtaking performances, and intimate shots of the crowd screaming her name.

Laufey's A Night at the Symphony: Hollywood Bowl Review

There’s a new sense of wonder whenever the old feels new again. That’s especially true for an artist like Laufey, who, at the young age of 25, uses contemporary musings on classical and jazz standards as a sonic means to bridge the generational gap. That comes alive in the artist’s first concert movie, “Laufey’s A Night At The Symphony: Hollywood Bowl.” For some, the film is a chance to relive those unforgettable moments of pop music working in concert with the LA Philharmonic Orchestra. In contrast, it is a chance for others to see that enchanting night for the first time.

I will not lie; missing the Hollywood Bowl concert after seeing her with friends and family in Phoenix, Arizona, earlier this year was one of the biggest heartbreaks. Of course, it was heartbreaking for those who missed it as well. So, having Trafalgar and Veep turn “Laufey’s A Night At The Symphony: Hollywood Bowl” into a movie and get Wrench to put all the sweeping camera shots and drone footage together can only be described as bewitching.

Aside from what’s happening as we exit 2024, a concert film like “Laufey’s A Night At The Symphony: Hollywood Bowl” is the kind of escape we could use.

“Laufey’s A Night At The Symphony: Hollywood Bowl,” starring Laufey, her sister Junia, her touring string quartet, Thomas Wilkins, and the LA Philharmonic after the short intermission is so much more than a documentation of the musician’s one-night-only performance, it is also a brief retrospective of the musician’s journey from Iceland to LA. While the concert’s setlist isn’t in chronological order, it was designed to tell a story of love, heartbreak, hopes and dreams, and just what it feels like to be bored by someone so vain.

Laufey's A Night at the Symphony: Hollywood Bowl Review

It’s incredible to see how much the Icelandic singer-songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist, whose voice deep and mesmerizing voice is a crooning cross between Chet Baker, Norah Jones, Adele, and Taylor Swift, has achieved in such a short amount of time. While she may be relatively new to the music scene, her fanbase quickly grows. The way that she is changing the music scene through symphonic performances at music festivals like Lollapalooza shows the world is receptive to the new sound. The new concert movie captures the magnitude of Laufey’s mission to bring that classic sound with a contemporary twist to the world.

“Laufey’s A Night At The Symphony: Hollywood Bowl” opens with a small introduction from the musician who walks through the nosebleed section of the iconic venue, talking to her sister about her dreams of playing at the venue. A few years prior, Laufey watched Mozart Under the Stars and immediately knew her dream would be playing at the Hollywood Bowl one day. That day came sooner than expected. So, watching footage of her walking the stage during rehearsals with delight reveals her excitement and slight anxiety. Of course, she overcomes that when the concert begins and is welcomed by a cheering, sold-out crowd.

Starting with “Above the Chinese Restaurant,” Laufey and her touring string quartet casts a sonic spell over audiences. Wrench takes a different approach to make the concert cinematic by letting some of those melancholic and joyful moments linger on the artist and the LA Philharmonic instead of dancers and illuminating graphics.

The “Best Friend” number is a celebration of sisterhood and a showcase of how playful Laufey’s concerts can be. Together with her twin sister Junia, who is also a violinist, Laufey’s content producer, and self-proclaimed clone, they play in concert while also teasing each other on stage for all to see. One moment, Junia would poke a performing Laufey with her bow. Then Laufey would treat Junia like a marionette.

Laufey's A Night at the Symphony: Hollywood Bowl Review

Laufey then closes out the set with “Like the Movies,” which feels like a love letter to the golden age of movies and a lyrical description of her dreams of having a relationship just like the ones she sees in the movies. “Letter to My 13-Year-Old Self,” the set’s final song, is a musical letter to her teenage self (and others) about never giving up on their dreams. The number also spotlights the interactive portions of some of the numbers outside of singing along, as audiences are encouraged to join fans screaming Laufey’s name when the musician sings, “One day you’ll be up on stage, little girls will scream your name.

As the film enters its intermission for a costume change and the LA Philharmonic to set up for the second half, Laufey “escapes” for a moment to cruise on the streets of Hollywood in a vintage Cadillac just like she talked about doing with her father. During the intermission, a short film sees Laufey opening up about her recording process and how she would listen to her songs as she drove through the streets and neighborhoods of LA. It was in this very city where she recorded her first two albums, “Everything I Know About Love” and “Betwiched.” She describes her journey as a fever dream and how odd and beautiful it is to know that all her exes would have to drive past her name on the Hollywood Bowl marquee.

Laufey then describes how the venue has been a cradle for classical, jazz, and pop music for so many years, and how her music is a blend of all those things, and she doesn’t need to choose between any of the different musical sides of herself. The closing remarks make for an excellent segue into “Dreamer,” a song that muses about her decision to float away on a cloud in the Milky Way without having to deal with the pressures of romance.

The film, directed by Sam Wrench, who helmed Brandi Carlile: In the Canyon Haze Live and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, brings far more depth to the concert. Of course, being there in person is an entirely different experience, but the selection of shots and the behind-the-scenes documentary add more to the performances. The heart swells with joy as the camera focuses on fans sing-along to a few lyrics or how a drone shot captures the moment the venue lights up when the crowd sings the interactive and inviting “Blah Blah Blah” portion of “from the start.”

“Laufey’s A Night At The Symphony: Hollywood Bowl” concert movie is a stunning showcase of the young artist’s immense talent and the magical fusion of her classical and contemporary styles.

With an enchanting blend of orchestral arrangements, breathtaking performances, and intimate shots of the crowd screaming her name all set against the grandeur of the Hollywood Bowl, Laufey’s first concert movie captures the elegance of her music while highlighting her exceptional vocal range and musicality, making it a must-watch for fans and new listeners alike.

About Laufey’s A Night at the Symphony: Hollywood Bowl

This Laufey’s concert captures her recent performance with the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl.

Laufey’s A Night at the Symphony: Hollywood Bowl was filmed in Laufey’s adopted hometown of Los Angeles. Directed by Sam Wrench (Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour), Laufey takes the audience on a spell-binding sonic journey under the stars, performing alongside the legendary Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Playing the iconic venue that Ella Fitzgerald and so many of Laufey’s heroes played before her, the film gives a behind-the-scenes look at the monumental show. As Variety sums up “Laufey feels like she was born to play the Hollywood Bowl”.

Laufey’s A Night at the Symphony: Hollywood Bowl comes to theaters December 6.

Werewolves Review: The Purge With Werewolves

0

Werewolves delivers exactly what you want from a movie that features Frank Grillo fighting werewolves with practical effects. It’s ridiculously fun!

Werewolves Frank Grillo review

All you have to do is take a look at the trailer for Werewolves and you will know that it is a whole lot of fun. Frank Grillo versus what feels like an unlimited amount of werewolves, ridiculous action sequences, and practical effects, come together to maket this one of the most memorable films of the year.

We, as a world, have had to deal with a pandemic recently, but not like this. In Werewolves the supermoon causes humans to turn into, you guessed it, werewolves. These bloodthirsty creatures take over towns, wrecking havok on them. Some people lock themselves inside so that they will not transform, and so that they will not have to fight off deadly creatures. Others embrace the change and enjoy the night as these monsters. This is where it feels similar to The Purge.

Werewolves Frank Grillo review

Very few actors could lead a film like this and take it to the next level, which is what makes Frank Grillo the perfect choice for the lead character. Determined to keep those he loves safe, Wesley is not afraid to venture into the night and stop the werewolves at whatever cost.

Grillo is a seasoned actor, and I trully love whenever I see him pop up in a film. He is fantastic at what he does, but he truly shines in this movie. Perhaps because Werewolves is so similar to The Purge, which he also stars in, he was able to step into this role as if he was born for it.

Werewolves Frank Grillo review

During our interview with director Steven C. Miller and star Frank Grillo, they discuss how this movie really is like The Purge with werewolves. However, it was also revealed that they dialed certain things back because it often felt too much like The Purge. What we end up with is a happy medium. A truly fun movie that will have viewers begging for more.

One of the best things about Werewolves is the use of practical effects. The werewolves are very clearly people in suits, but that is what makes is standout amongst a sea of movies with too much CGI.

There is blood, guts, and gore, but it is also practical. This feels like a film from years ago, but not in a bad way, in a way that will leave you will a smile on your face.

Werewolves Frank Grillo review

Werewolves boasts several incredible action sequences and is never afraid to get absolutely bonkers. Grillo shines as the lead, bringing a lot to the table. The story itself is interesting, and feels like something that could actually happen in real life. Honestly, more crazy things have occured.

This movie is an experience. It begs to be seen on the big screen. It is unafraid to push the envelope and get weird. There are glimpses of heartwarming moments and, without spoilers, the third act is truly spectacular. It shows just how far some people will go to protect the ones that they love. Inspiring, really.

Werewolves comes to theaters on Friday, December 6. I promise you, this is the perfect movie to see in a packed theater!

Playing Alien: Rogue Incursion Absolutely Terrified Me (& I Loved It)

Alien: Rogue Incursion, the new virtual reality game, is now available for pre-order and if you want to be absolutely terrified, you should get it.

Alien: Rogue Incursion VR

The very first Alien VR game is here, and trust me when I tell you, it is just as scary as you imagine it would be. Coming face to face with a Xenomorph is enough to make your heart stop. When walking around the, truly stunning, environments, my heart was pounding as I slowly peeked around corners with my weapon ready, hoping not to be startled but a creature.

Alien: Rogue Incursion VR

I am a big gamer, but when it comes VR I often spend my time playing Job Simulator. Yeah, I am not proud of it, but it is strangely addicting and actually a lot of fun. I’ve dabbled in Resident Evil on VR before, but it genuinely scared me. Alien: Rogue Incursion is even scarier, which I did not think was possible, and yet, I had a whole lot of fun with it.

Alien: Rogue Incursion VR

There are times when you literally have to wipe blood off computer monitors before you can use them. Ew. What I love about VR is how immersive it is, but fair warning, take breaks. If I spend too long playing in VR, I get a little nauseous. Sometimes the story is so good that you do not want to stop playing. Maybe it is the fact that I am forty years old, but I need to or it will not end up good.

Alien: Rogue Incursion VR

I enjoyed my time playing Alien: Rogue Incursion even though I mostly just wanted to hide in a corner and hope that no aliens discovered I was there. This is a game that I am one hundred percent going to play from beginning to end (with breaks of course!).

My only real complaint is that there is a lot to have to remember when it comes to reloading your weapon. This is realistic and makes sense, but it is hard to remember how to do it when you have an alien in your face. Surely this will get easier the more I play and become second nature in no time, but for now, I about wanted to chuck my gun at the alien attacking me and run.

Alien: Rogue Incursion VR

Wishlisting and pre-orders are available now on all platforms, with options for standard edition ($39.99) and deluxe edition ($49.99).

About Alien: Rogue Incursion

Alien: Rogue Incursion is a brand-new single-player action-horror VR game that immerses players in the world of Alien. The game stars Zula Hendricks, an unbreakable ex-Colonial Marine, on a dangerous mission that brings her to the uncharted planet Purdan, and the secrets hiding beneath its surface.

With her sentient AI companion, Davis 01, Zula must fight her way to the heart of the infested Gemini Exoplanet Solutions research facility. There she will need to survive deadly attacks from the most cunning Xenomorphs ever encountered and discover new horrors and threats that once unleashed could spell the end for humankind.

Alien: Rogue Incursion launches on PlayStation VR2 and PCVR via Steam on December 19, 2024, and on Meta platforms in early 2025.

Skeleton Crew Review: Cute, Captivating, & Exciting

Skeleton Crew features an intriguing story that further explores the world of Star Wars. The entire cast is fantastic, especially the young actors. It should be noted this review is based solely on the first three episodes of the season.

Star Wars might have been hit or miss for fans recently, with Disney+’s The Acolyte failing to be picked up for a second season, but for those looking forward to Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, get excited, because it is really, really good. The story is cute and intriguing. It focuses heavily on a group of young children, each of which is fantastic in their role, and is a great piece of family entertainment.

When four kids – KB (Kyriana Kratter), Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), and Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) – discover a starship on their planet, they accidentally start it off and take off into the galaxy for parts unknown. Things get weird and mysterious though when everyone they come in contact with seems to think they are lying about where they are from, calling it a myth of a planet.

Lucasfilm has only offered up the first three episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew for review purposes, two of which are streaming on Disney+ as of now. The series gives off pirate vibes, especially when Jude Law enters the picture at the end of the second episode. Of the bunch that I was given access to, the third episode is my favorite by far. We get to explore more of the new characters, and in particular, Law’s Jod Na Nawood and Vane (Marti Matulis).

There is a mystery surrounding Law’s character, although we do get a few bits and pieces of the puzzle in episode three. While this certainly has me excited for what is to come, it also worries me. Manny Jacinto’s character was also shrouded in mystery in The Acolyte, and we all see how that worked out.

The very first scene of the series sets the ton for a fun, family friendly dramedy set in the Star Wars universe. Smith’s Neel is unbelievably adorable. Viewers are sure to fall in love with him almost instantly. Especially when he is with his on screen best friend Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers). Their chemistry makes it feel like they are real-life buddies and adds something sweet and special to the show.

It is hard to judge Star Wars: Skeleton Crew after watching just three episodes, but so far, I am very inveseted in the story and interested to see where things go. I adore all four of the children, and honestly, I do not trust Jude Law’s character. Something about him rubs me the wrong way and I am not sure which side he will end up on.

The visuals are stunning and there have been some great action sequences. Overall, I am very impressed with this story that feels like pirates in space, with a mystery twist. I cannot wait to see where things go from here, and hope that they continue along this trajectory.

Nosferatu (2024) Review: Terrifying Masterpiece or Bloodsucking Bore?

3

Robert Eggers delivers his best work yet with Nosferatu, which boasts a captivating story, stunning visuals, and incredible performances.

Nosferatu 2024 movie review

Robert Eggers is one of those directors that you just know is the creative mind behind the project when you watch because of their distinct style – which is my favorite kind of director. Nosferatu (2024) is his best work. I never thought anything would surpass his first film, The Witch, in my book, but here we are.

From the stunning visuals to the insanely talented cast to the captivating story, Nosferatu is easily one of the best films of the year. Several scenes send chills down my spine just by me thinking about them. It doesn’t take long for Eggers to deliver on that first shocking scare, which sets the tone for a movie that, despite its over-two-hour-long runtime, will have audiences on the edge of their seat until the credits roll.

Nosferatu (2024) movie review

Nosferatu is a dark and gothic story, that focuses heavily on the obsession between a haunted young woman, Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp), and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her (Bill Skarsgård). Nicholas Hoult plays Thomas Hutter, Ellen’s husband. He steals the entire first act of this film.

It is impossible not to fall in love with him. He is not only charming, but he is also so very clearly head over heels in love with Ellen, which makes him a complete joy to watch on screen. Hoult knows how to select the correct roles for himself. Even when a movie is not so great, he is fantastic. Thankfully, everything about Nosferatu is wonderful.

Depp shines in the first act as well but truly comes into her own by the time the second and third act roll around. It is impossible not to become captivated by her – obsessed even – as viewers start to agree with Count Orlok that there is something special about her. There are several times when, because of the dark story, she needs to deliver what can best be described as raw, guttural, screams, and moans. The way that she gives herself over in these moments is impressive. It feels as if she goes into an out-of-body experience.

Nosferatu (2024) movie review

It takes a while for Willem DaFoe’s Professor Albin Eberhart von Franz to show up, but once he does, there is no surprise that he steals part of the show as well. It is very clear that DaFoe is having the time of his life, as he often does.

If you were not told that Bill Skarsgård is playing the vampire, you would never know. Not only does he, of course, look nothing like himself, but his voice is like something I have never heard before. He gives this role his all, and it makes it that much better of a film because of it.

Nosferatu is chilling. There are no jump scares placed just for the sake of jump scares, but there are a lot of scenes that will have viewers hiding behind their hands and watching through their fingers. Inherently scary, there is a lot about the concept of a human-obsessed vampire that is enough to terrify just about anyone.

Nosferatu (2024) movie review

The cinematography and stylistic choices certainly have a hand in what makes this movie so scary. It is not black and white, but the dulled colors and almost grayscale look help to make it feel like a long-lost monster movie that was dug out of a basement somewhere. And I mean that in the best way possible.

With an all-star cast that brings their a-game, breathtaking visuals, a haunting score, and a truly terrifying vampire at the heart of it all, Robert Eggers has outdone himself with this one.

You do not want to miss Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu when it comes to theaters on December 25.

Creature Commandos Has James Gunn Written All Over It (& I Am So Here For It)

1

Creature Commandos is very clearly a James Gunn brainchild, and I am so here for it. It is dark, twisted, and dirty, with a dash of heart.

Creature Commandos Has James Gunn Written All Over It (& I Am Here For It)

Something that James Gunn is very good at is pulling comic book characters from obscurity and putting them into an ensemble with other misfits. Combine that with the fact that he is never afraid to push boundaries and always knows the perfect place to add in an unforgettable needle drop, and we have some of the best content out there. Because of this I was thrilled at the announcement that he was taking over DC as co-CEO and coming up with his own DCU.

Creature Commandos Has James Gunn Written All Over It (& I Am Here For It)

Creature Commandos is the first (of many) projects set in this new universe for DC, and what an entry it is. This show is dirty. It is gory. And it is most definitely not for children. Gunn has expressed that there will be different mediums of content in his DCU, from adult animated series such as this one, to live-action family-friendly movies.

Creature Commandos Has James Gunn Written All Over It (& I Am Here For It)

After having been able to watch the entire (what I hope is) first season of Creature Commandos, parents, do not let your children watch this one. While it could be okay for older teens, it is not for younger audiences. Surely Gunn will make sure that any events that bleed over is explained in enough detail that Creature Commandos can be skipped by those with a weak stomach, or that are too young to watch.

Creature Commandos Has James Gunn Written All Over It (& I Am Here For It)

Creature Commandos follows a group of misfit criminals that are pulled from prison to create a team, much like the Suicide Squad – except they are all monsters. Instead of bombs being planted inside of them so they can be killed should they misbehave, they will get shocked instead. They are sent on a mission to protect a princess, and, of course, things do not go exactly according to plan.

As mentioned before, James Gunn knows how to put an ensemble together, something that is once again proven in this series.

Creature Commandos Has James Gunn Written All Over It (& I Am Here For It)

Steve Agee, Maria Bakalova, Anya Chalotra, Zoë Chao, Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn, David Harbour, Alan Tudyk, Indira Varma, and Viola Davis star in the series, and every single one of them brings something to the table – not surprisingly.

They have incredible chemistry together. There’s banter that had me laughing until my cheeks hurt, intimate moments that made me blush, action-packed scenes that had me cheering, and even some heartfelt moments that left me in tears. This series has it all.

Creature Commandos Has James Gunn Written All Over It (& I Am Here For It)

It was a brilliant decision to make this an animated series. While surely it could have been pulled off in live-action form with a big enough budget, the animation allows them to truly go above and beyond when it comes to the blood and gore of it all. Gunn loves to push the envelope, and he does exactly that in Creature Commandos.

All of that said, there really is quite a bit of heart here too. Each character is given enough time on screen so that viewers can feel connected to them and learn about their backstories. There are plenty of twists, turns, and shocking events that you will not see coming, but at the center of it all, is a really touching story.

The 7-episode first season of Creature Commandos will debut with two episodes on Thursday, December 5 on Max, followed by one episode weekly until January 9.
