During the Superman teaser trailer event, writer/director and DC CEO James Gunn explains that the 2025 film is about kindness.

I was invited to a special event for the Superman teaser trailer, which included a Q&A session with James Gunn (writer/director), David Corenswet (Clark Kent / Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luther). Gunn described the film as being about kindness and how everyone should be just that, kind.
Even if we do not agree with others, there is no need to be mean to them. This is something that the world could certainly use more of these days.
James Gunn Says Superman Is “A Movie About Being Good”

I think that it is a movie about kindness. It is a movie about being good. I remember talking to these guys when we had our cast dinner the night before we started shooting, and I’m like, at the end of the day, the world doesn’t always seem to have so much good in it. And this movie has to truly be that. And for it to truly be that means that we had to be good to each other, we had to be good to the crew, and then it had to be that authentically. So for me, the movie is about that more than anything else.
I think that’s what “taking me home” is all about. When I watched the trailer and the movie, we do have a battered version of Superman at the beginning. I think that that is our country. I believe in the goodness of human beings and I believe that most people in this country, despite their ideological beliefs and their politics, are doing their best to get by and trying to be good people.
Despite what it may seem like for the other side, no matter what that other side might be. I think this movie is about that. It’s about the basic kindness of human beings. And that can be seen as uncool, and it can be seen as under siege when some of the darker voices are some of the louder voices. That’s what happens when you let the internet seem like it’s the world, when it’s not the world, the world is us.
I live in a very rural part of Georgia and I see the kindness and the beauty of the people every day who don’t share all the same political beliefs as I do. But I think that’s what the movie is about, the basic fundamentals of human beings all over the world.
