titans season 3

The first two seasons of DC’s Titans have had their ups and downs, but season 3 wastes no time jumping in and trying to prove that it will be the best season yet. DC’s Titans Season 3 Episode 1 is jam packed with incredible action scenes, heartbreaking twists, and even a return to Gotham.

Warning, this recap and review of Titans Season 3 Episode 1 will contain spoilers. So if you have not yet watched this episode on HBO Max and would like to remain in the dark, please come back at a later time.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Titans Season 3 Episode 1
Barbara Gordon

This episode kicks off with Jason Todd having found the location of Joker. He calls Bruce to tell him, but Bruce is traveling and does not want him to take him on alone. Fans know that Jason has never been one to listen, and this time it costs him. He has a strange chemical that he inhales before dawning the Robin suit and heading off to confront the Joker — who immediately kills him in a pretty beautifully cinematic shot.

Then cut to Gizmo who is stealing some kind of chemical and of course, the Titans are there to take him down in a glorious fight scene. The music behind the scene makes it so much more entertaining, and it is fun to see the gang back in action, even if they do drop some cheesy one liner dialogue while doing it.

Season 3 Set Ups

When a police officer asks Superboy for his autograph right in front of Beast Boy, and then snubs Beast Boy by saying “you can’t beat a super” this is clearly a set up for what is to come. Hopefully Beast Boy steps up his game and will turn into even more animals this season, fingers crossed this is the push he needed to do it.

After Justin Cole, who fans saw back in Season 2 Episode 11, sees Starfire on the news he calls her to check in. It certainly feels like he is here to stay this season, as it is hinted that she does like him by the look on her face. And he very much likes her as he asks her to please call him when she has a chance.

Tim Drake

Tim Drake is a new character to the show, but fans of the comics will know him as the next Robin recruit. We are briefly introduced to him as he is out delivering food for his family’s restaurant and is being harassed by cops. We are made aware that he is a fan of Batman, as he has the sticker on his bicycle basket.

Then we see him eating with his family when the news of Robin’s death breaks. He is visibly upset by this. With Bruce out of a Robin, there is no telling when he will recruit Tim, but odds are he will sometime early on in the season.

Back In Gotham

After the news of Jason’s death, Dick Grayson heads back to Gotham to check on Bruce, who is not doing well. He has already buried Jason, and is trying to clean the blood out of the Robin suit, before placing it back in its glass case. Dick discovers a chemistry book in Jason’s room and is immediately suspicious as to what could be going on.

Dick is very worried about Bruce as he is acting like nothing happened, and trying to move forward like normal. Even putting together a list of recruits who could take Jason’s place. He goes to see Barbara Gordon in an effort to have her talk some sense into him. She tries to explain that this is who he is, and there is no changing that.

At a dinner between the three of them at Bruce Manor, she call shim out for being just as bad as the Joker. Something that sticks with him because Bruce then goes and murders Joker with a crowbar at Arkham. He then tells Dick to be a better Batman and that the city is his now, before disappearing to unknown whereabouts.

Other Notable Events

Gar briefly mentions that Rachel is off at an island somewhere trying to bring Donna back to life. This explains her absence at the start of the season, and is sure to mean something later on.

Dick, while trying to figure out what Jason was up to, discovers that he had a warehouse where he was mixing an unknown chemical compound. Obviously this is what he inhaled at the start of the episode.
