Angry Birds 2 Is Funnier Than The First One… But Still Not Great

angry birds 2 review

Going in to The Anger Birds Movie 2, I was hyped. My friend had told me that it was absolutely hilarious — and it seemed that way from the trailers. The first one was cute, but fell flat in a lot of ways for me. Perhaps I was expecting too much walking in to Angry Birds 2 knowing there was a phenomenal cast. Sure, I laughed. Yes, there were some hilarious moments (that peeing scene) but overall, it was a MEH movie at best. Something I will not be watching again.

In Angry Birds 2 there are almost two completely different movies going on. The invasion of the mysterious third island, and then the journey of the hatchlings to get back the baby sisters. If the hatchlings journey had been their very own short film, I would have loved it. It was easily the best part of the movie. They are so cute and adorable — and had me chuckling out loud quite often.

The Humor

Like I said, there were some funny moments. Totally some laugh out loud jokes. I recently rewatched the first Angry Birds movie and realized that a lot of the jokes don’t hold up. Sure they were funny the first time around, but once you know the punchline, you barely crack a smile. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that it will be the same way with Angry Birds 2.

Except for that pee scene. That will ALWAYS be funny. I don’t care who you are — our entire theater was laughing during that scene.

The Plot

The plot of Angry Birds 2 is very much the plot of a kids movie. Extremely predictable. Not one moment surprised me. And with two story lines going on at the same time, some moments might be confusing for little kids. This movie was fun, and cute, and definitely better than the first — but it still isn’t something to write home about.

Two moments, that I believe were supposed to be plot twists, my whole family figured out almost immediately. The reason Zeta, the ruler of the third island, was so upset was instantly obvious (even the part about Debbie). Also, if you didn’t see Red and Silver making a connection from the beginning, I don’t think you were watching the same movie as me. Even my daughters saw that one coming a mile away.

Overall Thoughts

The Angry Birds Movie 2 was extremely predictable — even for a kids’ movie. My daughters are 6 and 8 they figured out the ending about 20 minutes in. However, the journey was fun, and worth a watch. One watch. This is not a film I will be watching over and over with my kids. Although they have stated they do want to get it when it comes out on Blu-ray so they can.

I did love the lesson it showed my girls — that you can always make a truce with someone. This movie also teaches that it might not be the healthiest thing to want everyone to love you… and to do whatever it takes to make that happen. And also that working together is sometimes the key to solving a problem. Friendship is important, and I think that my girls helped to learn that from Angry Birds 2.
