Fun Ways To Teach Your Kids To Save For A Rainy Day

Thanks to Lara Everly’s Milk Money, I have learned to start teaching my kids to save for a rainy day. And we are having fun doing it!

Saving money for a college fund or even just a rainy day is really important. There is a stigma that comes along with talking about money, but I don’t want my daughters to go down that route. I ended up with a lot of college debt because my family did not discuss money, and that is not want I want to happen to my daughters. So, inspired by Milk Money, a series on MillionStories.com, we have started talking about money, and fun ways to save!

My girls are only 7 and 9 so they are not making a whole lot of money yet. But they do get an allowance when they complete their chores, and of course, birthday and tooth fairy money. Up until now they would spend that on silly things like toys and iPad apps. Now, however, they are starting to save for big items, and maybe even college.

What they don’t know is that we have a bank account for each of them set up that we put money in every month. It automatically comes out so that we don’t even think about it. This should be enough for them to get a used car when they are old enough to drive, or pay for some of their college.

After talking to them about the importance of money and saving, they wanted to start putting their money away for the future. This makes me a proud mom! But I wanted to make sure they stuck with this, and the best way to do that was to make it fun! Milk Money had the best idea to do this — they sent us a piggy bank set

My girls each got a piggy bank to paint and decorate, and they immediately put the money they had in it. Now they are excited to feed their pig and save for a rainy day!
