Cristo Fernández: Sonic 3, Ted Lasso, and Chasing Dreams

0

Cristo Fernández discusses playing two characters in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, as well as what Ted Lasso has taught him about embracing failure.

In this interview, Cristo Fernández shares his inspiring journey, from finding success in beloved shows like Ted Lasso to embracing failure and pursuing his passion for filmmaking with his sister in Mexico. He also discusses the unique experience of playing twin brothers in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is now available to rent or buy on digital and is packed with nearly an hour of bonus features.

Cristo Fernández On Playing Two Characters In Sonic 3

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Review: The Best of the Trilogy?
Sonic (Ben Schwartz) in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

Tessa Smith: What was it like to play opposite yourself in Sonic the Hedgehog 3?

Cristo Fernández: Yeah, it was so much fun. I just had to pretend to be evil when I am literally the same person. It was fun. Yeah just have to learn the choreography and know where you’re gonna be and it was fun. It’s funny.

How Ted Lasso Taught Cristo Fernández To Embrace Failure

Cristo Fernández: Sonic 3, Ted Lasso, and Chasing Dreams

Tessa Smith: My theater erupted when you showed up on screen in Sonic. You talk about feeling honored to see your name next names like Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves, but you’ve earned that.

Cristo Fernández: Thank you, Tessa. It means a lot. Thank you. I hope it inspires other people. It has inspired me, just the way Ted Lasso has inspired you, but also the people there have inspired me. I always like to remind people that Ted Lasso is not something, I mean, Jason is the best and we all love his work and his comedy, but Ted Lasso comes out of Jason creating it with Brendan Hunt, with Joe Kelly, and they pitched it around and people thought it was the dumbest thing ever.

But then he teamed up with Bill Lawrence and then they kept pitching around. They got a good amount of amazing, talented writers who created an amazing show, Ted Lasso. And I am just grateful that they gave me the opportunity, just like they gave all of us the opportunity. And to me, that’s a reminder that you can create great stuff and sometimes they are not going to be great at the beginning. And sometimes you have to fail at the beginning and it takes time and discipline, you have to believe in your own work and you have to believe in yourself, regardless of what other people think.

It takes years and then there you go, having an amazing show like Ted Lasso that turns out to be amazing. But for me, like in Sonic, I played a telenovela star and I am making my debut as a telenovela person in this way, but I also auditioned for telenovelas and never got the roles. And there are some scripts and films that are now my films that are now in cinemas here in Mexico, but it took time for someone to believe in them.

Corina is in cinemas. The director, Urzula Barba Hopfner, it took her nine years and I joined the project five years ago, and same with all our other films. Now we could talk about how long it took for Sonic to be there. It took many years.

So anyone out there who wants to create something and has a dream, it takes time, but it can happen. I always talk about my biggest hero, who is Guillermo del Toro from Guadalajara too, and if it took him 15 years to make Pinocchio, it can take me, I don’t know how many years to make my own films.

Be sure to watch our full Sonic the Hedgehog 3 interview with Cristo Fernández for more inspiring tidbits. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is now available buy or rent on Digital and will debut on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on April 15.

Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock Live Review

Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock Live brings the world of the Fraggles to life in their first ever live stage show – and it is absolutely worth seeing!

Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock Live Review

The Fraggle Rock universe has expanded with a live stage show that is traveling the country. If you are a fan of the series – either the classic 1980s version or the new Apple TV+ series – I highly recommend checking the show out when it comes to a city near you.

Filled with magic and wonder, this show transports the audience to Fraggle Rock, where you will dance your cares away and become an honorary Fraggle. Go on a journey with Gobo, Boober, Wembly, Red, and Mokey as you search for the pieces of the Celebration Stone through locations that are familiar with all Fraggle fans.

Of course, the Doozers make appearances throughout the night, as do several others that attendees will be happy to see.

Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock Live Review

As stated, Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock Live features many fan favorite characters, which will have new and old fans thrilled. Marjory the Trash Heap has been a personal favorite of mine since the cartoon from the 1980’s. Of course I have loved seeing her as part of the Apple TV+ series but was even more excited to see her on stage during this show. Her song is fantastic, of course, and she brings a lot of laughs. Not to mention, her design is really impressive.

Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock Live Review

Speaking of favorites, Junior Gorg also makes an appearance in the live show. I was curious how this was going to be done because of his size in comparison to the Fraggles, but it was handled brilliantly. Junior is on the screen but his hand reaches in and out at certain times, depending on his interactions with Red, Gobo, Boober, Mokey, and Wembly. Whoever came up with this plan deserves a lot of praise, because it works seemlessly and will not have children questioning what is and isn’t real.

Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock Live Review

Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock Live is an experience that the whole family will enjoy. The show is packed with familiar songs and fun callbacks to the series. The choreography is impressive, especially considering the costumes that these performers have to be in – they have tails and yet they never bump into one another. The look of the Fraggles is especially impressive, right down to every last detail. It truly feels as if the puppets have been brought to life.

Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock Live might lean towards a younger audience, but anyone who has a place in their hearts for the Fraggles will have a wonderful evening filled with joy and laughter – something the world could use a little bit more of these days.

Companion Review: An Exploration Of Abusive Relationships

0

Companion is a twisted, dark comedy that boasts incredible performances from the cast and explores abusive relationships like never seen before.

Companion Movie review

Horror is one of my favorite genres, but I especially love when it crosses the line to be more of a dark comedy, which is exactly what Companion is. This movie has several laugh-out-loud moments, but it also is not afraid to get dark. Sophie Thatcher is phenomenal as Iris, but it is Jack Quaid who will surprise audiences – because trust me, you have never seen him like this.

Does The Trailer Show Too Much?

Yes.. and No.

Companion Movie review

If you have not yet seen the trailer for Companion, skip it. As soon as I finished watching it, I had a feeling it showed too much, and it does. That said, there are still plenty of surprises in store for viewers. Some are predictable, some aren’t.

That said, I really wish I had gone into this movie blind. Honestly, I would not even read reviews before checking it out – so bookmark this and come back later. There are so many elements packed into this movie, that it is more fun to see them play out on screen when you have no idea what is coming. Even though they hint at most of the twists ahead of time.

An Interesting Exploration Of Abusive Relationships

Companion Movie review

Companion offers an exploration of abusive relationships that could be triggering for some viewers. The themes of a partner that will control you to the point where you know it is wrong, but then cannot bring yourself to do anything to get yourself out of the situation are heavy throughout the film. This is one of the main reasons Companion works, however.

There are some people who are certainly going to be able to relate, and in all honesty, it is this messaging that will have viewers hating some characters. Whenever things get too dark, though, humor is thrown into the mix to make it more digestible. This was my favorite aspect of Companion – it really is a perfect blend of many different genres that will have you feeling all sorts of feelings.

Companion Boasts Phenomenal Performances All Around

Companion Movie review

The cast of Companion is rather small, but everyone has their moment to shine. You will love characters, you will hate characters, and you will often be wrong in who you decide to root for. Sophie Thatcher has a commanding presence throughout the entire film. She absolutely devours the lead role, and was the perfect choice for this characters.

Get ready to see Jack Quaid like you have never seen him before. I do not want to go into it too much, for fear of spoilers, but he is brilliant as Josh. BRILLIANT. Then we have Harvey Guillen. To no one’s surprise, he is fantastic in this movie. He brings the fun and humor, and I could not help but adore him.

Lukas Gage is also great as Patrick. He is another perfect casting choice. This is another role that is hard to talk about without spoilers but there is one moment in particular that hearts everywhere are going to bleed for him. He is amazing.

Overall, Companion Is A Lot Of Fun

Companion Movie review

Companion is one wild ride. If you go into it completely blind you will be absolutely shook at every twist and turn. Even if you know the premise, and have seen the trailer, this movie has things in store for you that will never see coming (and some things that you will see coming, but that doesn’t make them any less exciting).

Unafraid to go there when it comes to the themes of abusive relationships, some scenes could certainly be triggering, but they are the ones that will stick with you for a long time after the credits roll. Companion is a dark comedy that begs to be seen on the biggest screen possible, so grab your tickets for when it hits theaters on January 31st.

Composer Hannes De Maeyer On Scoring The Couple Next Door

The Couple Next Door composer Hannes De Maeyer reveals how he created unique sounds within the score and details playing with vocals.

The Couple Next Door Starz Hannes De Maeyer Interview

Hannes De Maeyer is one of Belgium’s most versatile composers, best known for his collaboration withdirector duo Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah (Rebel, Gangsta, Black) and from his original music to ITV primetime drama Professor T and psychological thriller series The Couple Next Door. His scores range from pure electronic to impressive symphonic instrumentation.

In this interview, he reveals how he created unique sounds within the score and details playing with vocals. Hannes De Maeyer also shares a fun fact about working with his wife on this project and her crush on the lead actor, Sam Heughan.

Hannes De Maeyer Originally Worked On This Series A While Back

The Couple Next Door Starz Hannes De Maeyer Interview

Tessa Smith: The Couple Next Door is already available overseas in its entirety, but is just now coming to the United States. What is it like to have something you worked on a while ago resurface like this?

Hannes De Maeyer: Yeah. I must say the first interviews and preparations for the interviews was like, oh yeah, what did I write? What were the themes? What did I do? Because yeah, normally it’s closer to the creation process. But on the other hand, it’s always nice to relive the premiere. It really feels like a new premiere and like it’s the first time it happened, although it isn’t.

Tessa Smith: What intrigued you about The Couple Next Door when you first started working on it?

Hannes De Maeyer: I think what intrigued me the most was the script, but also what I tried to do with the music. Which is what you see on the outside is not what there is on the inside. On the outside, everything seems pretty and normal and beautiful, but on the inside, there’s some danger lurking and some craziness. So that drew me to the story. And then also, how can I implement that in the music? And going nuts, definitely towards the end, without getting too much into the story. That was really fun.

With The Thriller Genre, The Score Can Be “Over The Top”

The Couple Next Door Starz Hannes De Maeyer Interview

Tessa Smith: Within the thriller genre, like with this series, the score helps to hint at things to come. What was it like for you to get to play with that?

Hannes De Maeyer: Exactly. I read a few scripts, but I didn’t read the last two or three episodes right away. Of course I had talks with the director, so it’s not that I was completely in the dark, but there were still some surprises for me as well, which is nice as a composer. So the first time you see it, you can play, or compose, from the experience like a viewer would. It was also fun to start little themes or little music that I can use again at a later point in the series, and then try to change it along the way.

Manipulate it a little bit as you get more into the story. That’s a cool thing about, not only in this series but writing music. You can manipulate the viewers a little bit. For example, if you have a scene where somebody is running, like for the beginning of the series, if you add some romantic music on that, although she looks distressed when you put a piano or a solo violin, and it’s really lyrical, the audience starts to think. That’s the interesting thing about music. You can do so much to guide the audience. That’s what I like about making music for series.

In a thriller, sometimes you can go a little bit over the top with swells and jumpscare people a bit. I like the search of finding nice and interesting sounds, maybe even more than a romantic score or something like that. Another interesting sound I used on the score is playing an acoustic guitar with a violin bow. I’m not a guitarist also, but when I use it in this series with a bow, it’s, again, the imperfect perfection. When you play it with a bow and you add a lot of pressure, it’s a really interesting texture and sound. I didn’t try to make it beautiful or perfect because sometimes the pitches may be a little bit off. It was really nice to have that kind of vibe. I used it to emphasize, or add to, the bases and the melodies. It’s a sound that probably when you hear it, you think, what’s that?

Hannes De Maeyer’s Wife’s Vocals Are Used In The Score

The Couple Next Door Starz Hannes De Maeyer Interview

Tessa Smith: When you are working on a series like this, do you go episode by episode?

Hannes De Maeyer: Yes. But for this story, it was interesting because the story gets weirder and the characters get crazy. So it was more of a natural process for me to go with the story and change the music accordingly. So I started the first one, but then a little bit more in the second, because what I did a lot in this score was twisting sounds. So I was starting with a normal sound, but then with plugins or distortion, I mangled the sounds and made it strange. So the idea was mostly to start from acoustic sounds, or you think it’s acoustic, because there’s a lot of vocals in the score. The use of voice, but in all sorts of ways.

There’s two singers, actually one is my wife, maybe that is a fun fact. She’s not a professional singer, but she has a nice voice and she can sing. The imperfect thing about her singing or voice is perfect for this. The fun thing about asking my wife to sing was she’s a huge Sam Heughan fan because of Outlander. She has a hidden crush on Sam. It’s strange to say as a husband, but it’s true. So I thought it was a really fun idea to let her sing in one of the episodes where the sexual tension between two characters, Evie and Danny, come together in a fruitful way. I find it funny to let my wife sing that scene.

There’s a lot of dream sequences in the series. For the music, I thought it would be fun to make music that always sounds a little bit off and you don’t quite know, is it a real instrument? Sometimes I use a voice, but it’s not a real voice. It’s a sampled voice. But it sounds pretty close to the real thing. Same with using guitars. There are real guitars in the score, but sometimes in the dream sequences, I would use a sample guitar so that subconsciously you hear it and there’s something off.

The other singer I worked with, her name is Billie Leyers. She’s a Belgian singer, but I asked her not only to sing the melodies but also to make weird sounds with her mouth and her voice. Then I imported it into my sequencer or my sampler and made an instrument of it. When you play it lower, it stretches the sound. That was a request from the director. He wanted a lot of voices, but I found it interesting to not only use the voice as singing but also as a tool in completely different ways.

The Couple Next Door premiered on January 17 on STARZ. The finale will be available on February 21.

Lee Majdoub Teases Dark Future For Agent Stone After Sonic 3

0

Lee Majdoub teases a dark future for Agent Stone after losing his mentor in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. He also says watching Jim Carrey work is “impressive.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is coming home digitally on January 21st. To celebrate, we spoke with Lee Majdoub, who has gotten to work extremely close with Jim Carrey throughout these films. He says that it is always impressive watching him work, but especially in Sonic 3 because Carrey plays two different characters that interact quite often.

Majdoub details where he thinks his character, Agent Stone, goes after losing Robotnik, someone that he loves and respects. He feels that Stone will become “villainous” and will not handle Ivo’s death well.

Lee Majdoub Is Always Impressed Watching Jim Carrey Work

Tessa Smith: You have gotten to work closely with Jim Carrey on the Sonic films, but he really goes above and beyond in Sonic 3, playing two characters.

Lee Majdoub: He’s fantastic. And to see it in the moment was incredible because, what I didn’t realize, and I mean, it made sense, is that we’d be shooting the Ivo part of a scene one day, and then we would come back another day to shoot the Gerald stuff. And it never occurred to me that, not only does Jim have to know and be open to what he’s going to do as Ivo, but he also had all these ideas around what he was going to do as Gerald so he knew how to feed off of what he was going to do.

And we had a great double for him, too. His name was Brendan. He was incredible, and he and Jim worked really well together. Jim was able to guide Brendan along, too, and be like, no, no, no, this is what I’m going to do. Try it this way. So all I had to do was be like, how am I going to react to Gerald on the Gerald day and he has to think insanely ahead.

Lee Majdoub Details Where He Thinks Agent Stone Goes From Here… Without Robotnik

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 review

Tessa Smith: Where do you think Stone goes from here? I imagine he will be so devastated over losing Ivo.

Lee Majdoub: Yeah. I think he’s absolutely devastated. It’s tough because I don’t know where we’re going from here. Personally, I can’t imagine Stone deals with his grief in a healthy way. I would think that we would see a little bit more villainy potentially. I think the lessons that we learn in Sonic 3, I don’t think would pertain to Stone. You know what I mean? So would he go back to making coffee? Maybe? Would it be angry coffee? Probably. Would it then stem to something else? Would he then be like, you know what? I’m over this. I can’t do coffee anymore. I have to do something.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler details those end-credit scenes, if Jim Carrey could return in the future, and including a darker storyline.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is finally coming home on digital release, so fans can watch it over and over again in the comfort of their new home. This franchise just gets better and better – and with a Sonic the Hedgehog 4 already confirmed, the fanbase is over the moon.

In this interview with Sonic Director Jeff Fowler, he reveals how thankful he is to the fans for embracing the dark Shadow and Maria storyline – despite the few tweaks they made to it. Fowler also teases what is to come in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and if we might see Jim Carrey back in one way or another.

He also addresses the fan theory that the color of the clothes Tika Sumpter wears in the films tease the new characters that appear in the end-credit scenes.

Jeff Fowler Is Thankful Fans Embraced Shadow & Maria’s Darker Storyline

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Review: The Best of the Trilogy?
Shadow (Keanu Reeves) in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

Tessa Smith: Do you have a certain Easter egg or moment that you were most excited to include in Sonic 3?

Jeff Fowler: I really love the Shadow and Maria stuff. I think that was everyone’s biggest question coming into this third film was how are we going to handle it? And like, were we going to really soften it? Like, were we going to kind of rewrite it? Because it’s a different tone. It’s a heavier subject matter than we’ve done in any of these films. So it’s something we worked really hard on it. For me, from my standpoint, that’s the thing I’m extremely excited about, is that that was so well received. And even though we made a few tweaks to the canon, that fans understood and supported it, and really just seeing all the fan art online, and just people have really just fallen in love with this movie version of Shadow and Maria, which is just awesome

Jeff Fowler On Jim Carrey’s Return “He Has Had The Time Of His Life”

Tessa Smith: This could potentially be Jim Carrey’s last Sonic film, but is there a chance that he could pop up in Sonic 4 or beyond?

Jeff Fowler:  I mean, I love working with Jim Carrey. It’s too soon to really say where things could go from here. But I mean, I’m just so proud of these three films. And I know he’s just as having the time of his life, and has had the time of his life playing Robotnik. So yeah, it’s something we just have to kind of get into. But too soon to say anything just yet.

Tike Sumpter’s Clothing May (Or May Not) Tease New Characters

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Review: The Best of the Trilogy?
James Marsden as Tom and Tika Sumpter as Maddie in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

Tessa Smith: Fans seem to think that Tika Sumpter’s clothes hint at new characters coming in to the franchise.

Jeff Fowler:  I will leave that continuing to fan speculation. I would love to be that clever to be things planned out that far ahead. But no, it’s a real testament to how deep into the weeds the fans go. And really, they’re just, they’re very smart. They’ve got really fun opinions. They don’t miss a thing. Every pixel gets scrutinized in these films and it’s awesome. You love to see that level of engagement.

Will We Ever See Silver The Hedghog In A Sonic Movie?

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Review: The Best of the Trilogy?
Sonic (Ben Schwartz) in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

Tessa Smith: My oldest daughter’s favorite character is Silver. She wanted me to let you know she needs to see Silver in the future.

Jeff Fowler: There’s a lot of silver fans out there. She’s not alone. We’ll take it into consideration for sure.

Beneath the Fur: Ben Prendergast on Becoming the Wolf Man

0

Ben Prendergast spent hours in the makeup chair preparing for his role in Wolf Man. Read all about that & why he respects Leigh Whannel so much.

In this interview, go behind the scenes with Ben Prendergast, the man behind the monster in Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man. Learn about the grueling makeup process, his unexpected friendship with his young co-star, and what drew him to Leigh Whannell’s terrifying vision.

Ben Prendergast Says Leigh Whannell Is “Australia’s Tarantino”

leigh whannell wolf man

Tessa Smith: What is it that drew you to this project?

Ben Prendergast: That’s the great trick of Leigh Whannell. He wanted to make something that had a little bit of an emotional impact as well. He’s a big fan of film in general and he was trying to do something here. And I think he pulled it off. I love big, hairy, no pun intended, audacious swings. I know Leigh does too. We are of a similar vintage, Leigh and I, we did hang a little bit back like 10-15 years ago before we even met up for this.

We’re both from Melbourne. I’m really proud of him as a filmmaker and loved The Invisible Man, loved Upgrade, loved his whole thing, really. I guess we cut from the same cloth, we really like to be quite pragmatic, but artful in what we do. And it’s a universal monster. When I found out what it was, and that I was close to booking, ostensibly, a wolf man role, I couldn’t believe it.

He’s always been an outside of the box thinker, Leigh. He’s like Australia’s Tarantino. I’ve said this before, but I just feel like he’s got a language all of his own. He’s not perturbed by what everyone thinks he should do next. He’s not perturbed, necessarily, by the keyboard warriors out there. He just gets out there and he tries to do his thing and he has his followers and I’m one of them. I can’t wait to see what he does next.

It Was A 6+ Hour Makeup Process – But Ben Prendergast Would Do It All Over Again

Wolf Man review
Ginger (Matilda Firth, right) in Wolf Man, directed by Leigh Whannell.

Tessa Smith: How long was the makeup process?

Ben Prendergast: My earliest call time for one of the days was 2:40 in the morning. So I set my alarm for one o’clock or whatever it was. Even when we were doing the test makeup, it was always, I think for my character, there’s just so much that goes into him, so six hours, all told. They’re like, it’s going to get faster, Ben, don’t worry. I was like, this is not faster. It was like six hours in and an hour and a half out of it. Even when you’re finished and you’re exhausted, you trudge back into the trailer and then they’re just attacking you with all this oil.

I think my longest day was somewhere in the 18-hour range. That’s not all work. Some of that’s in the trailer. A lot of that’s in the chair. Christopher Abbott said to me, I’m just going to monk out, just be completely serene. I couldn’t listen to music because they’re also putting ears on. So I was just talking to my team, Jason Doherty and Alice, who have done a lot of The Lord of the Rings. Listening to their stories about Middle Earth was enough to get me through.

I think I was about 28 days on that project, and by the last makeup, I was never over it, but I was really looking forward to that last makeup. But then at the end, they’re like, would you do this again? And I was like, damn straight, I would do this again.

Matilda Firth Thought The Wolf Man Makeup Was “Cool” and “Disgusting”

Wolf Man (2025) Julia Garner & Matilda Firth

Tessa Smith: When I was talking to Julia Garner, she said that Matilda was the least scared of all of them when she saw you in full makeup.

Ben Prendergast: I mean, you have this this kid who comes in, by the way, I think Matilda, she was I want to guess nine. She also was from Leeds. She has not just a London accent but like a Leeds accent, that’s a hard thing. But her American accent is flawless as far as I can tell.

I think she had two or three stunt doubles for the stuff that she had to do. And I remember, the makeup artist said, let’s go and meet the girls, because you’re gonna have to spend a lot of time with them. When I was in full makeup, I remember walking into the room, in the makeup. Matilda’s doubles, they couldn’t even touch me or whatever. Matilda’s in there and she’s fist bumping. She’s like, yeah, you really do look scary, actually. Her mom’s freaking out.

But I love Matilda. It’s just such a joy to see her work. I wish her all the best. But yeah, she didn’t care. She just thought it was kind of cool and looked disgusting.

About Wolf Man

Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott (Poor Things, It Comes at Night) stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead.

With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte (Emmy winner Julia Garner; Ozark, Inventing Anna), fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger (Matlida Firth; Hullraisers, Coma).

But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter.

As the night stretches on, however, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable, and Charlotte will be forced to decide whether the terror within their house is more lethal than the danger without.

Wolf Man comes to theaters on January 17th.

Wolf Man Review: Sad, Tragic, & Absolutely Terrifying

Writer-Director Leigh Whannell brings something unique to Blumhouse’s Wolf Man, which is a sad, tragic, and absolutely terrifying film.

Wolf Man (2025)
Wolf Man

There have been many different iterations of werewolves on screen, dating back further than anyone can remember. Writer-Director Leigh Whannell might not have wanted to tackle another Universal Monsters movie so quickly after The Invisible Man, but fans are going to be thanful that he said yes to the Wolf Man.

Whannell has stated before that he likes to completely switch genres after he works on a film, so he never expected to tell the story of wolf man – at least not this close to the invisible man. When writing the script, it is clear that it was important to Whannell to give audiences something they have never seen before when it comes to werewolves, and he succeeded.

Wolf Man review

Wolf Man is a sad and tragic story, no matter which way you look at it. Deciding to focus on a small family of three and putting them in an old farmhouse out in the woods, is a brilliant move. Because of this, viewers get to spend a lot of time with them, almost instantly becoming invested in their story and their relationships.

Charlotte (Julia Garner) is a working mother who feels she has lost her connection with her daughter, Ginger (Matilda Firth). Her husband, Blake (Christopher Abbott), is a stay-at-home dad, so his bond with Ginger has strengthened. Many parents will be able to relate to this – no matter which side of the fence they are on.

Blake and Charlotte’s relationship is strained, but when Blake inherits his missing father’s farmhouse after he is officially declared dead, the family decides to spend some time in the woods to reconnect. It doesn’t take long for a strange animal to attack, causing them to barricade themselves inside as they hide. When Blake starts to change, Charlotte must decide who is more dangerous – her husband or the creature outside.

I will not go into details in an effort to remain spoiler free, but just from that synopsis, most people can figure out where things are going. Wolf Man is a bit on the predictable side, but that is par for the course when you are adapting monsters like this, which have had many film and series appearances before.

What I love most about Whannell’s Wolf Man is the humanity and tragedy that it delivers. Blake’s transformation is slow. Every time we see him, he is a little more changed, but this is what makes it so heartbreaking. He does not fully understand what is happening to him, and his family does not understand it as well.

As the disease worsens, it becomes harder and harder for them to communicate with one another. There are real-life diseases that slowly transform their hosts into someone their families do not recognize, which is exactly what Whannell is playing on here.

Thanks to an eerie score, incredible sound design, and some well-placed jump scares, Wolf Man is also scary. It leans into practical effects for the gore that will have some viewers watching through their fingers. Somehow, this movie is able to perfectly blend sadness and scariness, sending audiences on an emotional roller coaster. I am not ashamed to admit that I was crying by the end of the film.

I highly recommend seeing Wolf Man when it comes to theaters on January 17th. Experiencing this one on the big screen, with a group of movie goers is the best way to do it. As with most horror films, this is a communal experience. But be sure to have tissues with you… just in case.
