The Bondsman Season 1 Review: R.I.P.D. Meets Preacher

0

Prime Video’s The Bondsman feels like Preacher meets R.I.P.D. It is a ton of fun, never taking itself too seriously, and a true joy to watch.

The Bondsman Season 1 Review: R.I.P.D. Meets Preacher

When I first read the description for The Bondsman I thought to myself, this is either going to be a ton of fun or a total disaster. Thankfully it is the former. This series works as well as it does because it knows exactly what it is – an off-the-wall series about a brought back from the dead bondsman who is cooerced into working for the devil tracking down demons.

The first episode kicks off with the murder of bounty hunter Hub Halloran (Kevin Bacon). He is promptly brought back from the dead with the caveat that he must now hunt down demons who have escaped from Hell for the devil. Clearly he is perfect for the job because he has experience finding criminals who have skipped their bonds.

Bacon is the perfect casting choice for Hub, but he is surrounded by an ensemble cast that takes this show to the next level.

Hub’s personal life constantly bleeds into his work life, which is where a lot of the fun stems from. His ex-wife (Jennifer Nettles) has found herself a new man (Damon Herriman) who has quite the seedy past, to put it lightly. Their son (Maxwell Jenkins) wants to be a singer, something that Hub does not think he is ready for.

As someone from Boston, I find it hilarious at how often Lucky (Herriman) is dragged for being a Red Sox fan. Been there, done that – but he really pulls it off brilliantly. This series makes it very hard to like his character, but that Boston charm will always shine through so there were a handful of times I was right there with him.

Honestly though, Herriman is one of the best parts of The Bondsman – which says a lot because I love almost everything about it.

The first episode of season 1 throws the audience right into the thick of it with Hub. While we know a lot more about what is going on than he does based on the premise of the series, it is still a ton of fun to watch him discover it for himself.

The Bondsman Season 1 Review: R.I.P.D. Meets Preacher

While the demons can be scary, there is more humor in the series than anticipated. Again, it never takes itself seriously, which is why it works as well as it does. Each episode features another demon that Hub must track down – some of which are scarier than others.

That said, there is a connective tissue between the episodes, making them not fully stand alone. You will know what I mean when you watch, but for now I will remain vague in an effort not to spoil anything.

Kitty (Beth Grant) in THE BONDSMAN Photo Credit: Tina Rowden/Prime Video © Amazon Content Service LLC

Beth Grant plays Kitty, Hub’s mother. She may be getting older but that does not stop her from getting her hands dirty. She is committed to being there for her son, through it all, which is something I not only love about her, I can relate to.

As a mom of two girls, I promise you I will always back them up, even when they are wrong. But I also will never be afraid to let them know when they have messed up. She is a great addition to the incredible ensemble cast.

The Bondsman Season 1 Review: R.I.P.D. Meets Preacher

The Bondsman season one takes viewers on a wild journey. While it has its jump scare moments, it never crosses the line into taking itself too seriously. There is quite a bit of gore, but it is often followed up by funny lines or comedic moments so that the audience never sits in that place for too long. The ensemble cast is fantastic, each bringing an important element to the table.

The story comes to enough of an ending to feel like a good stopping point that makes sense for a first season, but leaves the door open for so much more. I had a blast with this series and I would love to see more and more seasons keep coming, until there is no more story to tell.

When I say The Bondsman is out there, I mean it. But it is written and acted so brillaintly that it reminds me of Preacher in a fun and twisted way. The supernatural new series from Blumhouse Television, The Bondsman, will premiere all 8 episodes exclusively on Prime Video April 3, 2025.

Freaky Tales Review: A Chaotic Mess, But A Good One

0

Freaky Tales tells four different stories that, while they have a throughline, never fully connect. It is a chaotic mess but entertaining nonetheless.

Freaky Tales movie review

Freaky Tales lives up to its name in that it tells four separate stories that are bizarre, twisted, and yes, freaky. While they do have a throughline that somewhat connects them, they are more or less their own thing. Chaotic from the start, these tales are messy, yet they are thoroughly entertaining and come together to form a good movie.

Thanks to an incredibly talented cast, including Ben Mendelsohn, Pedro Pascal, Jay Ellis, Jack Champion, and Dominique Thorne, these four stories each have their own themes that are sure to resonate with viewers. That said, don’t put Freaky Tales on for life lessons, put it on to turn your brain off and have some fun.

The first story follows a group of young teenagers who are big into punk music. Their club continues to be raided by nazis, who consistently beat them up. After refusing to retaliate for months, they decide to train and fight back. Easily my favorite of the four tales, this one almost feels a little too close to home currently.

The second story is the one I find to be the funniest. Two young aspiring rappers are invited by none other than Two $hort to partake in a rap battle. The fact that Two $hort is a producer on this film makes his involvement that much more hilarious. The battle itself is a lot of fun and shows what a good sport he is, to let these women come for his character so hard. I found myself laughing quite a bit.

Freaky Tales movie review

The third story stars Pedro Pascal and is easily the most emotional of them all. In an effort to remain spoiler-free, I will simply say that he is a former debt collector who decides to retire and do right by his pregnant wife. Pascal is one of the best actors working today, which he proves once again in Freaky Tales. His performance moved me to tears at once point while watching.

The fourth and final tale mostly focuses on a heist. During a championship basketball game where players’ homes are left empty, a local gang decides to break in and steal valuables. Of course, things go a little too far. This one is easily the most chaotic of them all, truly going off the walls when all is revealed in the end.

The final story also ties the others together, making the chaotic mess actually work. Freaky Tales is twisted, but a whole lot of fun. Due to the film being split up into four stories, the pacing is on point. Things move along quite quickly, which keeps viewers entertained throughout.

Freaky Tales comes to theaters on April 4 and if you enjoy twisted humor and want to have a good time, be sure to see it on the big screen.

Set in 1987 Oakland, Freaky Tales is a multi-track mixtape of colorful characters — an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector — on a collision course in a fever dream of showdowns and battles.

Executive produced by hip-hop pioneer Too $hort, and featuring an all-star ensemble including Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-young Yoo, Angus Cloud, and Tom Hanks, this pulpy blend of explosive action, edgy humor, gory kills, and sly twists and turns makes for one wild ride.

The Woman In The Yard Review: A Chilling Exploration Of Depression

0

The Woman In The Yard is a chilling exploration of grief, guilt, and depression. While it relies heavily on jumpscares, the use of shadows is brilliant.

The Woman In The Yard review
(from left) Taylor (Peyton Jackson), Annie (Estella Kahiha) and Ramona (Danielle Deadwyler) in The Woman in the Yard, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.

More of a psychological thriller than I expected, The Woman In The Yard relies heavily on sound design and jumpscares to provide the actual scares. That said, this film is a chilling exploration of grief, guilt, and depression that might not be perfect, but it is effective enough.

I have to admit that I had low expectations going into this movie, considering that the press screening was after it was already technically playing in theaters, but my 12-year-old had seen the trailers and really wanted to go (she is a horror buff like me). I was going in more or less blind, only seeing images and no actual trailer. All of this to say that I think this created the perfect storm of rather enjoying The Woman In The Yard.

The Woman In The Yard review
Danielle Deadwyler as Ramona in The Woman in the Yard, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.

For a movie that clocks in at less than ninety minutes, the first act moves at a snail’s pace. This is to set up for what is to come and to keep the audience confused, just as Romana (Danielle Deadwyler) is, about what exactly is happening. In the second act, things start to really pick up, and the third act goes all out.

The story follows a grieving family. Ramona has lost her husband in a car accident that has also injured her leg. Their two children, Taylor (Peyton Jackson) and Annie (Estella Kahiha) need their mother, who is basically absent – at least mentally. When a strange woman cloaked in black shows up on their lawn, their world gets turned upside down.

The Woman In The Yard review
Okwui Okpokwasili as the Woman in The Woman in the Yard, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.

One of the best things about The Woman In The Yard is the way that the shadows are used. The strange woman controls her shadow, using it to effect the things around her. From making the wind chimes move to literally dragging people around, this is a very cool effect that is done well.

While this woman is terrifying at times, at others, she is just kind of there. Of course, her looming presence is supposed to scare people in general, but this is where the jump scares come in. Because she controls the shadows, she often lurks in them. Her popping up unexpectedly will cause viewers to jump and then laugh that they were got.

The Woman In The Yard review
Peyton Jackson as Taylor in The Woman in the Yard, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.

For a small ensemble cast of just four, they work really well together. The mother in me related to Ramona at times and was deeply gutted by her at others. I know what it is like to feel like you are the glue holding everything together, but thankfully, I never let it get to me like she does.

As a parent, the third act really hit me hard. I watched most of it from behind my fingers, with my 12-year-old pressed against me. We were both impacted by these events, but I can see how it would not resonate with some people.

The “big reveal” was not predictable per se, but I was also not shocked. Then, we get to the ending, which is confusing and ambiguous. Most people in my screening all had different ideas of what happened. I am not sure whether that is a good or bad thing, but it certainly left people talking.

The Woman In The Yard review
(from left) Ramona (Danielle Deadwyler), Taylor (Peyton Jackson) and Annie (Estella Kahiha) in The Woman in the Yard, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.

Deadwyler delivers an incredible performance as Ramona, Kahiha is absolutely adorable, and Jackson brilliantly portrays a boy who has abruptly become the man of the house. I cannot say too much about Okwui Okpokwasili’s performance as the woman, but she can be terrifying when she needs to be.

Overall, The Woman In The Yard is not perfect. The story is messy at times, and I wish it leaned more into the scares – especially in the first act. I also would have loved a more concrete ending. That said, the exploration of depression is going to resonate with a lot of people, and honestly, is what is more terrifying about this film.

More or less what I expected; it is worth the price of admission if you ask me.

About The Woman In The Yard

Danielle Deadwyler stars as Ramona, a woman crippled by grief after she survives a car accident that takes her husband. Seriously injured, Ramona now must care for their 14-year-old son and 6-year-old-daughter, alone in her rural farmhouse.

Then one day the woman takes form in their yard. Ramona assumes the woman is lost or demented, but as the woman creeps nearer and nearer to the house, it becomes clear she is no ordinary figure and her intentions are anything but peaceful. Now Ramona must rally to protect herself and her children from the grasp of the woman who simply won’t leave them alone.

What’s It Like To Be Back?

The Last Of Us Cast Teases What To Expect In Season 2

Craig Mazin: We’ve been working very, very, very hard for like, what is it, like, two years now? Because we don’t really take a break. We just… season one ends, start writing season two. Prep. Shoot. Post. So, it’s been it’s been awesome to like to remember that people are going to watch it. So, we’re just very excited to start showing people what we’ve done because we’re extraordinarily proud. Especially what these guys, it’s…  They’re amazing.

Neil Druckmann: Someone just asked me if I’m excited for the premiere tonight. I’m like, I don’t think that far ahead. Like, first we got to finish this thing, then we get to worry about that. But it feels now it’s close enough where you could start visualizing and thinking about people watching this show, engaging with it, talking about it. And like Craig was saying, not only everybody here, but just an incredible crew that just put everything on the line: incredible sets, and prosthetics, and VFX – nonstop VFX. We got a wild season in front of you.

Bella Ramsey: It’s a little bit scary. I think it was, yeah – when season one came out obviously it was like this huge thing. I think I’m just so aware of, like, season two coming out and being, like, everybody, like, looking at it and looking at me and it’s, like, quite scary, but it’s, like, exciting and I’m – it’s nice to be here – and it’s trying to see it as, like, a celebration of all the, like, hard work that we did. And I just hope that people will – I mean, people are going to like it – and because these guys did an incredible job and just, yeah, I think we can all go… We all went into it with, like, complete trust for them. And we’ve been literally, like, carried and protected the whole way so it’s pretty exciting and I hope that, yeah, people will watch it.

Pedro Pascal: It feels like this [pointing at audience]. It’s so special to be back. And also, with such a kind of expanded identity, if that makes sense. Because there are new people and there are old people. Not that you’re old, Gabriel. I think there’s something that is really exciting about basically giving everyone another season of a show that everyone loved and that everyone has worked so hard on and has put so much into.

Gabriel Luna: I feel good. It’s good to be back. It’s, I’ll echo what Pedro said, it’s just, you know, just to see Bella and Pedro and Rutina – to just to get the family back together. But also, to add these additions that have been that have strengthened the story in so many ways; in so many new and exciting ways. Brought a great love for the for the source material right into it. And this – I am old – and there’s a beautiful infusion of youth and excitement and energy that they all brought. So, we’re really excited for everyone to experience what we made.

…And What Is It Like To Join The Last Of Us In Season 2?

The Last Of Us Cast Interview Isabela Merced

Kaitlyn Dever: It was like all of the feelings. It was I was nervous, I was anxious, but also very excited. I’ve been a huge fan of this game and the show for a very long time. Yeah, but the show – the reach of this, of this world – is so, so big. The world of The Last of Us is so large. And so, you can definitely, you can feel that – you know, in wardrobe fittings when you’re first, you know, in prep and then finally getting on set. It still feels very big but I, yeah, it was… I felt less nervous once I got onto set just because of this wonderful group of people and being held by Craig and Neil. It really felt like I was being cared for and taken care of in a way that I haven’t ever really experienced ever before. So, it was really a thrill as a person and an actor.

Craig Mazin: Kaitlyn did things that I’m not sure, like, you even should have done. Like, I don’t know how you did them. When we meet new performers, we’re sort of like I – we knew her, obviously, as an actor and what she could do – but when you then you meet the person and you’re like, well, what can you actually do? What are you comfortable with? And Kaitlyn just would never say no. And it was amazing. And, and when you see like how physical, like, just how physically tremendous her performance is, it’s kind of it’s insane. Very grateful, like, so far, if you look down this row, we’re going to get to [Isabela & Young] at the end too. Like, we just we haven’t… We just haven’t fucked up in casting. We just haven’t fucked up. And sooner or later…

Isabela Merced: It was really cool. I felt like the new kid at school. I think Dina and I have a lot in common in the sense that I have this random confidence for no reason. I just really appreciate that they embraced me for who I was, and I really feel like I was seen through your eyes: Craig and Neil. And that’s kind of it was just a really good environment to flourish as an actor. And I think that’s why my mom will be proud of me.

Young Mazino: I felt incredibly fortunate. I have so much gratitude to everyone here being so open. Joining a second season for something that was so well established the first time and the trust that I think Craig and Neil had in me to deliver on this character. I do remember getting more nervous when I stepped onto set and realizing the sheer scale of the town and seeing these – the huge gate that they built. That’s when I started to feel a little tripped out. But then, but then the longer I was there, I realized the energy was so, so warm and so inviting, and I feel like there was no ego on set. And I think that’s a rare thing, especially the larger set gets. And I had such a blast. It was chill.

The Last Of Us Season 2 Establishes Abby’s Firefly Ties Immediately

The Last Of Us Season 2 Kaitlyn Dever

Jazz Tangcay, Moderator: Given that the game chooses to have players meet and play as Abby without knowing any of her backstory, I was somewhat surprised when the premiere established Abby’s ties to the fireflies into Salt Lake City so immediately. How did you land on that level of clarity as the starting point for the season?

Neil Druckmann: We got this question like four times today. There are two reasons why we change certain context or move certain things up in the story. One of which, in the game, you know, you start the game, like you said in the question, you play as Abbie, so you immediately form an empathic connection with her because you’re surviving as her. You’re running through the snow, you’re fighting infected, and we can withhold certain things and make it a mystery that will be revealed later in the story. We couldn’t do that in the show because you’re not playing as her, so we need other tools. And that context gave us that shortcut. Something similar happened in season one when, you know the game, one starts with you playing as Sarah, and we didn’t have to do a lot of heavy lifting for you to care about Sarah, because you’re playing as her, you’re experiencing the outbreak as her. In the show, we had to spend quite a bit of time to achieve something similar. So that was one reason. Another reason is, you know, where that revelation happens in the game. If we were to stick to a very similar timeline, viewers would have to wait a very, very long time to get that context. You would probably get spoiled to them between seasons, and we didn’t want that. So, it felt appropriate for those reasons to move that up and give viewers that context right off the bat.

The Last Of Us Is “Cathartic” In Many Ways

The Last Of Us Cast Interview Bella Ramsey & Pedro Pascal

Unnamed Press Member: This is an apocalyptic view of what is going on, and then we turn on the news at 6:00, and it’s almost an apocalyptic present. How much is a show like this in escape, and how much is it a view into what we need to examine?

Pedro Pascal: I think that storytelling is cathartic in so many ways, always has been. It’s the way that the human beings have made testimony to life. Whether it was, you know, handprints on the walls inside of a cave to, you know, a television show that you can stream on Max. Starting April 13th. And so, for me, you know, growing up, I have always and it’s all of my development is based on, you know, books I’ve read, movies I’ve seen, and television that I’ve watched. And so, it’s very much going to reflect the human experience. And under such extreme circumstances, I think that there’s a very kind of, like, healthy and sometimes sick pleasure in, in that kind of catharsis, in a safe space to, to see human relationships under crisis and in pain and, and intelligently draw political allegory, societal allegory and, and based off  of the world that, that we’re living in and, and very beautifully and very intelligently.

Gabriel Luna: I think he spoke so eloquently, beautifully about it. And I think there’s a huge catharsis element to it all. The first season, we made a story about a pandemic fearing that maybe there’s a fatigue, but I think the experience that everyone had just gave them an entry point to what we were doing. And I think the second game, which, as Neil wrote it in the way that Craig and Neil, I’m assuming, writing this, the second season, is, you know, it’s about, you know, conflicts and where do they start? And who started it? And trying to, and right now all over the world, we’re dealing with these conflicts that, they’re – people are stuck in the wheel of vengeance and can it be broken? Will it be broken? And that’s where we are, so catharsis is a big element to both, I think.

Describe The Last Of Us Season 2 In Just One Word…

The Last of Us Season 2

Jazz Tangcay: I want to ask everybody in this panel to describe season two in a single word.

Young Mazino: Explosive.

Isabela Merced: Grief.

Gabriel Luna: Vengeance.

Kaitlyn Dever: Gripping.

Pedro Pascal: Snowy.

Bella Ramsey: Rainy.

Neil Druckmann: Love.

Craig Mazin: Beautiful.

Meet Cute In Manhattan Review: An Adorable Meta Rom-Com

0

Meet Cute In Manhattan is an adorable romantic comedy that is equal parts funny and sweet – plus, it has a few surprises in store for viewers.

Meet Cute In Manhattan review

I love a good romantic comedy. They are always feel-good movies that can take you out of this crazy world for a couple hours, and thankfully, Meet Cute In Manhattan does exactly that. One of my favorite things about this film is that it is very clear the creatives behind it are rom-com fans too, because it is almost meta in nature – at least at certain times.

Karen Morey directs as well as co-writes with the lead actor, Terence Chen. They know their romantic comedies and are not afraid to reference them multiple times throughout the film. The story follows Jason, an actor who unexpectedly connects with his co-star in a dating app commercial. That ad goes viral so wherever he goes, people recognize him from it.

Meet Cute In Manhattan review

Because of this, he ends up doing more commercials with Nora (Kendall Leary). Both he and Nora are in their own relationships, making things a bit more complicated and adding some fun and surprises to this sweet story.

I wouldn’t necessarily say that Meet Cute In Manhattan does anything new when it comes to the rom-com genre, but it does keep you entertained all the way through. I found myself giggling at the meta references while rooting for Nora and Jason to break things off with their partners and get together already.

As with most romantic comedies, it can be predictable at times, but it still finds ways to break the mold and deliver some unexpected twists. Ones that I will not talk about because I do not want to spoil them for you.

Meet Cute In Manhattan review

Chen and Leary have great chemistry, which allows viewers to invest themselves in their relationship – wanting to shake them until they realize they should be together. Neither one of them is with a partner that is supporting them the way they should be, but sometimes it is hard to break things off when you are comfortable with someone.

The writing is brilliant, the jokes are sharp and witty, and the concept feels like something that could absolutely happen in this day and age. There are dating apps – and ads for them – everywhere you look. And when you have to pretend to be in love, sometimes you find yourself falling in love. Isn’t that why so many actors end up dating one another after they do movies together?

Meet Cute In Manhattan is sweet, funny, and charming. It is thoroughly entertaining and exactly what most people look for in a romantic comedy.

Be sure to check out our interview with Meet Cute In Manhattan’s Terence Chen, Kendall Leary, and Karen Morey.

About Meet Cute In Manhattan

Our story begins like all good New York rom-coms: with a montage and a voiceover from Jason, who grew up watching romantic comedies with his family and longs to see an Asian lead who looks like him. His meet cute with Nora, an aspiring architect, leads to their casting in a viral dating app commercial, where their on-screen chemistry captivates viewers citywide and sparks genuine feelings between them.

Inspired by this unexpected romance, Jason writes a script based on their burgeoning relationship. The film unfolds through the lens of Jason pitching the script, creating a rom-com within a rom-com as the executives listening to his pitch find themselves falling in love as well.

The Life Of Chuck Review: A Breathtaking Experience

0

The Life Of Chuck is a beautiful and deeply moving film that is filled to the brim with an insanely talented cast. It will be remembered as one of the greats.

The Life of Chuck review

The Life Of Chuck is one of those movies that is a lot to process and is sure to stick with viewers long after they finish watching it. The film starts with Act Three, then moves to Act Two, and finally ends with Act One – a brilliant move if you ask me because this keeps certain things a secret as long as possible.

Starting with the final act of the story adds a mystery element to things, which allows it to lean into more of a thriller genre. As it goes on, it evolves, switching genres in unexpected, thrilling, and thought-provoking ways.

The Life of Chuck review

If you were to go into The Life Of Chuck knowing absolutely nothing about the story or the cast, to say your mind would be blown is an understatement. Every time someone popped up on the screen, I was excited to learn more about their character and see what they brought to the table.

Everyone in this movie is an incredible talent. It might be titled The Life Of Chuck, but it isn’t just about him — especially in the third (first?) act. This is the meat and potatoes of it all. The scenes that will have you wondering what exactly is going on, but enjoying the heck out of it at the same time.

The Life of Chuck review

Shrouded in mystery, it is the perfect way to kick things off. Stephen King is a phenomenal writer, and not just of horror stories. While most people know, some would be surprised to discover he is the author behind The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and Stand By Me. The Life Of Chuck has earned its place among these greats and will be remembered in this collection over time.

While it deals with some things that could be considered supernatural, there is so much more to it. This is a story about life and about living your life how you want to. It is weirdly inspirational and life-affirming, even though it is a movie about the end.

Tom Hiddleston plays one version of Chuck and is, of course, fantastic in the role. In the second act, he performs a mesmerizing dance number that teeters on almost too long (and it will be for some) but is extremely important to his character, as we discover in the first act.

Jacob Tremblay and Benjamin Pajak portray Chuck in Act One, each bringing an element to him that I could not help but admire. It made me care so much more about this character. Perhaps that is because we learn all about how he came to love the things that he did and how he developed as a person.

Mark Hamill is a key part of this act as well. He does a wonderful job playing Chuck’s grandfather and while I want to stay spoiler-free, he has an important role in the way everything comes together. His is one of the best performances among many, many fantastic performances.

The “big reveal” that brings everything together came as a surprise to me, but a welcome one. It adds so much to the movie, truly making something special, and something that needs a lot of thinking about to be able to digest. It has made me look at the world differently just in the several hours since I saw it.

Mike Flanagan has done a fantastic job with The Life Of Chuck. It would never have been my first choice when thinking of him collaborating with Stephen King, but it turns out it was absolutely the right one.

The Life of Chuck review

The Life Of Chuck is beautiful, moving, and emotional. It is a thought-provoking film that is sure to solidify itself as one of the most brilliant movies of our time. I laughed, I cried, and I left with a different outlook on life. I can honestly say it has changed me in ways I never expected.

With an absolutely phenomenal cast, everyone is given the time to shine, no matter how long they appear for – which is kind of on brand when it comes to the messaging of the film. This one is special. Do not let it fly under your radar.

The Life Of Chuck comes to theaters on June 6th.

Side Quest Review: The Perfect Addition To Mythic Quest

0

Side Quest is the perfect companion piece to Mythic Quest. A four-part anthology series that dives deeper into this world fans love and offers new insights.

Side Quest review

Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest is easily one of my favorite television series currently running. As a giant nerd and hardcore gamer, there is so much about it that resonates with me. For this reason, I was intrigued and excited when a spin-off anthology series was announced, and thankfully, Side Quest (perfectly named by the way) did not disappoint.

This series dives deeper into the Mythic Quest world that fans know and love while exploring new mythos and offshoots of the company that never even crossed my mind. From Mythic Quest comic books to orchestra concerts featuring the score, these four episodes are the perfect companion piece to one of the best series ever made.

Side Quest Episode 1: Song and Dance

Side Quest review

A great introduction to the series, Side Quest episode one is most connected to Mythic Quest, featuring Rob McElhenney’s Ian quite prominently. It showcases something we already know about Ian – that this job is his life and if he needs something, he wants it now. Even if the employee that can help him is on a much needed vacation.

Song and Dance is the perfect transition episode, cautiously welcoming fans into a new series. This is the most difficult one to fully comprehend if you have not watched Mythic Quest, while the others are stand-alone enough that you can enjoy them even if they are your first venture into this universe.

Side Quest Episode 2: Pull List

Side Quest review

As someone who has spent a lot of my time at local comic shops, hanging out with like-minded people, and genuinely having the time of my life, Pull List is an episode that really resonated with me. I have had many pull lists in many different states and I understand the need to make sure you get the latest comics before they are spoiled for you.

Side Quest review

Easily the most entertaining of the four, this is hands down my favorite Side Quest episode. I found myself genuinely intrigued by these characters and their lives. If this was to become its own spin-off series, I would absolutely tune in for every episode.

Side Quest Episode 3: Fugue

Side Quest review

Side Quest‘s Fugue offers great messaging and unique visuals. It does a wonderful job of making the video game score its own character, taking viewers on a journey. That said, I found it to be the slowest and dullest of the episodes. I even caught myself nodding off at one point. It is still good, but the other three blow it out of the water.

Side Quest Episode 4: The Last Raid

Side Quest review

Just as I resonated with the Pull List episode because of my love for comic books, The Last Raid holds a special place in my heart because there is nothing quite like teaming up with your friends for a great video game raid.

This episode is surprisingly emotional at times, as well as absolutely hilarious at others. I found myself tearing up and, once again, becoming invested in the characters. The ending is pure perfection. I really had a good time with this one.

All four episodes of Side Quest are now streaming on Apple TV+. They offer an exploration of the world of Mythic Quest. I love the idea of this anthology series and would absolutely be seated for more episodes.

SXSW 2025 Movies Ranked From Worst To Best

0

A lot of great movies played during SXSW 2025. Here are all the SXSW movies I watched ranked from worst to best.

Our 10 Most Anticipated SXSW 2025 Films

SXSW 2025 featured a lot of incredible films this year. From The Accountant 2 to Together, here are of the movies I watched, ranked from worst to best.

The Accountant 2

Our 10 Most Anticipated SXSW 2025 Films The Accountant 2

If you like the first The Accountant film because it is a spy thriller with a lot of great action, temper your expectations going into The Accountant 2. This time it leans more into the comedic side of things and while there is still some action, it is secondary to everything else. Whenever Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal are together on screen, it is clear they are having a blast, but something about this movie just does not live up to the original.

The Accountant 2 review.

Another Simple Favor

Our 10 Most Anticipated SXSW 2025 Films Another Simple Favor

Another Simple Favor is more or less exactly what I expected it to be. The first movie is better, lets get that out of the way first, but it is still a good movie. Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively continue the awkward chemistry of the first movie that boarders on obsession and sexual tension. It is funnier than I anticipated and the mystery aspect kept me entertained, but it is not without its issues.

Another Simple Favor review.

The Surrender

SXSW 2025 Movies Ranked From Worst To Best

Everyone deals with grief in their own way, which is a central theme in The Surrender. However, I highly doubt many people have gone the route that Barbara (Kate Burton) goes after she loses her husband. Much to her daughter Megan’s (Colby Minifie) surprise, she brings in a man to do a ritual that will supposedly bring him back from the dead.

The Surrender review.

The Astronaut

The Astronaut movie review

On paper, The Astronaut sounds like a fantastic Science Fiction film. Kate Mara stars in a movie filled to the brim with paranoia as an astronaut who returns to space and becomes fairly confident an alien creature has followed her back. While it doesn’t really do anything new, and is often predictable, Mara’s stellar performance makes The Astronaut worth checking out.

The Astronaut review.

Ash

Ash movie review 2025

Some movies are made to be seen on the big screen – Ash is one of them. This twisted, trippy, psychological thriller is best experienced in a dark theater with no distractions so that you can become fully immersed in it. Right from the opening sequence, I was all in, finding myself on the edge of my seat, going on a journey with Riya (Eiza Gonzalez) as she tries to rediscover who she is.

Ash review.

The Surfer

The Surfer sxsw review

I am always down for a Nicolas Cage movie. I don’t even have to look at the synopsis or trailer, I will watch it. Tell me Nicolas Cage is in it and I am seated. And that is exactly what happened with The Surfer at SXSW.

The Surfer review.

The Dutchman

Our 10 Most Anticipated SXSW 2025 Films The Dutchman

If you love a twisted movie that will make you think, The Dutchman is for you. This film follows a man named Clay (André Holland) who is struggling to make things work with his wife Kaya (Zazie Beetz) when one of the worst possible things that could happen to them does – a strange woman (Kate Mara) takes an interest in Clay when she meets him on a subway train.

The Dutchman review.

Friendship

Our 10 Most Anticipated SXSW 2025 Films Friendship

Admittedly I am not the biggest fan of Tim Robinson’s I Think You Should Leave. Sometimes the jokes land for me and sometimes they don’t. Because of this I went into Friendship cautiously optimistic. I love Paul Rudd’s work so that is what initial sparked my interest in the movie. Surprisingly, this ended up being one of my favorite films to come out of SXSW 2025.

Friendship review.

O’Dessa

Sadie Sink O'Dessa

O’Dessa is truly like nothing you have ever seen before. It is, by definition, an epic rock opera, but it is so much more. Sadie Sink is phenomenal in the lead role not only proving her acting chops, but her sining skills as well. This film delivers many unforgettable moments with its vibrant storytelling.

Holland

Holland movie review

If you have seen the trailer for Holland and thought that it has shown too much, have no fear, that is not the case at all. I went into this movie thinking that I knew exactly what was going to happen and boy was I wrong. While it is a bit of a slowburn at first, once the third act hits, the results are so satisfying that you will forget the time it took to get there. That said, I would have loved for the big reveal to happen a little bit earlier simply so we could spend a little more time in that juicy spot of knowing everything.

Holland review.

Death Of A Unicorn

Death of a Unicorn review sxsw

From the first moment I saw the trailer for Death of a Unicorn, I knew it was right up my alley. Thankfully, it did not disappoint. This film is over the top and absolutely ridiculous, which is to be expected when you know it about killer unicorns.

Death of a Unicorn review.

Clown In A Cornfield

Clown in a Cornfield review sxsw

I need to preface this review by stating that I hate clowns. Ever since I watched IT when I was way too young, they absolutely terrify me. So why would I subject myself to Clown In A Cornfield? Honestly, I have no idea. I just love a good slasher and this one seemed like it was going to be a lot of fun. Thankfully, it is a blast and has everything that I love in a slasher – well, except for the clowns.

Clown In A Cornfield review.

The Ballad Of Wallis Island

The Ballad of Wallis Island

Every once in a while, a movie comes along that just touches you in a way you did not expect going into it. The Ballad of Wallis Island is one of those movies.

Because of the world’s current climate, and so many heavy movies coming out, it was nice to sit back and enjoy a refreshing, charming, feel-good film. Yes, there are some deeper moments, and I am not afraid to admit that I teared up more than once, but overall this movie is a celebration of humanity, relationships, and music. It is something we all could use right now, trust me.

Drop

Drop Movie Review SXSW

Blumhouse’s Drop is exactly the movie I wanted it to be. A brisk, albeit intense, thriller that will have audiences on the edge of their seats. It takes place in one setting, for the most part, adding to the claustrophobic feeling, which keeps the heart rate elevated.

Drop review.

Together

Our 10 Most Anticipated SXSW 2025 Films

I came into SXSW 2025 having heard that Together was the best film to come out of Sundance, which made it one of my most anticipated movies of the fest. I went in as blind as possible, literally only knowing it was a horror movie starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie, who are married in real life. They are both incredible actors, who have worked together before, but I was excited to see where this movie was going to take us.

The Newton Brothers Break Down Daredevil: Born Again Most Powerful Scenes

From X-Men ’97 to Daredevil: Born Again, The Newton Brothers discuss scoring beloved character deaths and breakdown their favorite Born Again scenes.

In this exclusive interview, The Newton Brothers discuss yet another incredible Marvel project they have had a chance to work on – Daredevil: Born Again. Andy and Taylor, known collectively as The Newton Brothers, are American film score composers, record producers, and multi-instrumentalists.

We caught up to discuss their latest work and joke about the fact that they keep scoring beloved character deaths. They talk about their collaboration with the sound team and break down some of their favorite Daredevil: Born Again moments.

Finding The Right Score For Foggy’s Death

Tessa Smith: Foggy’s death is obviously a pivotal and emotional moment in the series. Was that score particularly difficult to nail down?

Taylor: First of all, we love the Netflix series too. And like you, we thought it was great. Coming into this we wanted to really expand on the universe that was established. These characters are so beloved, so we wanted to do them justice. When we first read about that too, with Foggy, we were like, whoo, this is hard. But I feel like it’s the impetus for what comes for this season. And I think for the people who are shocked or are like, well, why did they do that? I think if you watch the show, you’ll understand what happens and why that occurred.

I think that particular scene, it changed a lot musically as it was going along based off of feedback. We try and test some things, but in the end it needed to feel tragic and shocking and it really needed to set up putting down the mask, you know what I mean? And is it really necessary to ever be Daredevil? Is it causing more harm than good? No matter if he personally wants to be Daredevil, is it really helping or is it just making things worse?

Because I think, if you were in it and it’s your friend and that’s your tragedy, you would take it as like, maybe this isn’t really working out. I think that conflict really is very grounded for, especially for superheroes, that people can relate to it. That aspect of it was just really bringing home the tragedy, especially after he’s gone and he’s died and then the mask is falling. It’s like, we’re done. It’s the beginning.

Andy: His death kind of unlocked for us, musically, what needed to happen before and after that and into the season, right? Because without really thinking about it, if you’re just kind of running with it, it’s like, oh, all these things are happening with Bullseye and Daredevil leading up to the roof and all that happens. What unlocked everything for us was this is all about Matt losing one of his closest friends, right? And how that lands on him and how that would land on all of us. The rage we would feel, the rage we do feel when people are taken from us, even if it’s just of natural causes.

But in this case, that really becomes a thing so much so that, like a good example is with Bullseye going off the roof at the end. There was a version of that where we scored a big buildup to Matt pushing him off the roof. But really that’s not what it’s about at all.

It’s about what’s going on with Matt, even though he’s Daredevil in that moment, he’s so conflicted. That gave us so much ammunition for what’s to come in the rest of the series. It’s really helpful when you have a very intense emotion because it helps guide you.

There Is Purposefully Very Little Music In The Diner Scene

10 Most Interesting Daredevil: Born Again Facts Learned At The Press Conference (Plus Comic Book Suggestions From The EP!)
(L-R) Daredevil/Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk / Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) in Marvel Television’s DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN exclusively on Disney+. Photo courtesy of Marvel Television. © 2025 MARVEL. All Rights Reserved.

Tessa Smith: Matt and Wilson’s conversation in the diner is one of my favorite scenes in all of Daredevil: Born Again.

Taylor: That was one of my particular favorite scenes between the two of them, in the diner. Just the way it’s shot. He’s looks so big and the David and Goliath of it all. And then what they say in the interaction between them, I was just like, this is so good. There’s barely any music in there and I think it works so well just sitting almost dry. That’s one of my favorite sequences as well, just in terms of the show. I love it. But it’s super exciting because these characters have been around forever from the comic books to here we are.

Andy: Yeah, there’s a lot of stripping down that happens. Because I think the first iteration, not always, but a lot of the time, the first iteration is to overwrite because, I guess with any craft you do, I’d be curious if a makeup artist applies more makeup and then mutes it. You know what I’m getting at? Or does a hairstylist do a big poofy hairdo and then tame it down?

Because musically, at least on my end, it’s nice to bolster the music up and then just go in and start removing lots of things and find out where the sound is that’s speaking to the character so that it’s not overwritten. Because like, as Taylor said, a lot of these scenes don’t really need it. The stories and the characters speak for themselves. So it’s really about us living in the shadows and doing a little surgery where necessary.

The Newton Brothers Say Punisher’s Return Was A Daunting Scene To Work On

The Newton Brothers Break Down Daredevil: Born Again Most Powerful Scenes

Tessa Smith: I love Jon Bernthal’s Punisher. It was so exciting to see him back this season, but he has changed. What was your approach to that?

Andy: That was one that Taylor and I talked about as well, before we’d even seen it, because it’s such a moment. There’s so much that happens within that moment that it was a daunting scene to work on because it’s a different character than what you have in your mind of Punisher. It’s not a different character, but it’s a part of the character that you don’t necessarily… you know what I mean. It’s really fun.

Taylor has a 66 Mustang that has the Punisher emblem on the air filter so we’re with you on that too. He’s a very special character to us as well. I guess that’s all I should really say right now.

Taylor: I will, without talking about necessarily Frank specifically, it really shows the variations between the different tones of the spectrum of the characters. Like, them the Punisher, or Frank, or Matt, or Daredevil. I feel like the actors are pouring their hearts out in these roles. We got a chance to meet them and they’re so lovely and super humble. You can tell how much they care about these characters and they come in wanting it to be not good, but great. Everyone we met really, really cared.

And so I think, musically we want to know where to dance and when to be thematic and when to let space happen because there are performances that are just absolutely incredible, as you’ve seen between some of these characters. So I think for us, it was a real treat to see them vulnerable in these roles.
