“It’s Such a Beautiful Relationship”: Gerard Butler & Dean DeBlois Hope for Cate Blanchett’s Return in Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon Sequel

Director Dean DeBlois and Gerard Butler hope for Cate Blanchett to return as Valka in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon sequel.

"It's Such a Beautiful Relationship": Gerard Butler & Dean DeBlois Hope for Cate Blanchett's Return in Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon Sequel

As anticipation builds for the upcoming live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, director Dean DeBlois and returning star Gerard Butler sat down with us to talk all things vikings and dragons. They both offer exciting insights into the future of the beloved franchise, including the strong possibility of a familiar face joining the cast for the already-in-the-works sequel.

Will Cate Blanchett Join The Cast Of The Live-Action How To Train Your Dragon 2?

How To Train Your Dragon Live-Action "Expands" On Animated Film Explains Director

Gerard Butler reprising his iconic role as Stoick the Vast was the perfect casting choice. He embodies Stoick, and says he had a great time reprising the role and getting to actually step in to the world of How To Train Your Dragon. Of course there was no way I could chat with the people behind this film and not ask about the potential return of Cate Blanchett as Valka, Stoick’s wife, a role she originated in the animated How to Train Your Dragon 2.

When asked about the chances of Blanchett reprising her role in live-action, Dean DeBlois’ response was filled with hope. “Hope,” he declared, echoing the sentiment of many fans. “I wrote the role for Cate, actually,” he reveals.

Well, seeing as my boys are a fan of How to Train Your Dragon 1, we should talk. – Cate Blanchett

DeBlois then shared a charming anecdote about how he first approached the Oscar-winning actress. “That’s my most Hollywood moment,” he recounted with a smile. “I walked up to her at the Oscars and she was sipping a drink in her beautiful gown and her hair before the ceremony started. And I said, ‘I wrote a part for you in How to Train Your Dragon 2.’ And she had the best answer. She said, ‘Well, seeing as my boys are a fan of How to Train Your Dragon 1, we should talk.'”

How To Train Your Dragon live-action Gerard Butler

Gerard Butler, who shares a poignant on-screen relationship with Valka as Stoick, also weighed in on the possibility of Blanchett’s return. “I saw a note that she sent Dean saying that she really enjoyed the movie, and it felt like she thoroughly enjoyed it, so that’s, like you say, knock-on-wood that she’ll be there for the second, because it would be, it’s such a beautiful relationship between Valka and Stoick, so it would be amazing for it to be Cate.”

When asked about the prospect of acting opposite her, Butler’s admiration was clear. “I’d love to, she’s amazing,” he enthused. “I mean, I can’t imagine on this planet, if you ask anybody about Cate Blanchett, how anybody couldn’t say anything other than, ‘Wow, she’s incredible.'”

The connection between Stoick and Valka is a cornerstone of the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, and the prospect of Cate Blanchett bringing that beautiful and unforgettable relationship to life in the live-action sequel has undoubtedly ignited excitement among fans. While nothing is officially confirmed, the hopeful words from both the director and Stoick himself suggest that the winds are blowing favorably for Valka’s return to the big screen, with Cate Blanchett once again at the helm.

About How To Train Your Dragon

On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Mason Thames; The Black Phone, For All Mankind) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon.

Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society. With the fierce and ambitious Astrid (BAFTA nominee Nico Parker; Dumbo, The Last of Us) and the village’s quirky blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost; Snow White and the Huntsman, Shaun of the Dead) by his side, Hiccup confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding.

As an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup’s friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future. Together, they must navigate the delicate path toward peace, soaring beyond the boundaries of their worlds and redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader.

How To Train Your Dragon (2025) soars into theaters June 13.

Juliet & Romeo Review: Filled With Love & Heartbreak

0

Though far from perfect, as many enjoyable things are, Juliet & Romeo is still a good time.

Juliet & Romeo movie review

The tale of Romeo and Juliet is hardly anything new, so whenever there is a chance to revive or reimagine it, there’s something exciting there. For instance, Baz Lurhmann’s beloved 1996 Romeo + Juliet found the characters in a modern-day world. Just this past year there have been two vastly different stage takes on the play, and it does not seem like reimaginings are going to be going anywhere soon.

Timothy Scott Bogart’s recent take on the classic doesn’t put the characters of fair Verona in a modern setting, but it does reimagine them with modern pop music and modern language. That’s right—none of the iambic pentameter William Shakespeare’s works are known for. It’s a choice that may prove to be polarizing amongst fans. The result is something that hits close to Romeo + Juliet, but often ends up missing the mark of anything truly poignant or with much bite.

Juliet & Romeo movie review

However, that is not to say that it isn’t fun. It very much is, especially with its fairytale-esque telling. The music itself is especially catchy and not unlike popular songs you may hear on the radio. And the real Italian locations lend an extra layer of believability to this tale as well. In fact, it is not much of a stretch to say the movie wouldn’t have been good without them. It anchors the viewer inside the story, placing these characters into real-life settings that weren’t green screened in or vastly different locations that tried to be passed off for the real thing.

When we first enter the story, it’s 1301 and two families are warring: Lord Montague (Jason Isaacs) and Lord and Lady Capulet (Rupert Everett and Rebel Wilson). As you’d expect, Isaacs and Everett give the roles their all. Wilson, who some may not know was classically trained, is right in her element, and it is a wonder she doesn’t do more films like this.

The romance of Romeo (Jamie Ward) and Juliet (Clara Rugaard) moves fast-–perhaps a tad faster than the source material, but the plot has always been quick-paced. But once Romeo and Juliet meet, they’re infatuated.

Juliet & Romeo movie review

With appearances by Derek Jacobi (Friar Lawrence) and Dan Fogler (the Apothecary), Bogart and co. know how to utilize their skills. Fogler, charismatic as ever, has a wonderfully fun number he sings in his laboratory. Jacobi is a wizened presence, a close and stoic confidante for both Romeo and Juliet.

It’s a fresh take, and at the end of the day, many of us would prefer to take a chance on something that tries new things with existing source material. Juliet & Romeo probably would have taken the airwaves by storm if it had been made in the mid 2010s, but preteen and teenage girls will always exist, and there is no doubt that the score will resonate with many of them.

Though far from perfect, as many enjoyable things are, it’s still a good time. It’s love, and heartbreak, and it could have a sequel, so who knows where things will go after this.

Be sure to watch our interview with the cast and creatives of Juliet & Romeo to learn more about the behind-the-scenes and how this movie flipped things on its head.

About Juliet & Romeo

Set in 1301 at the end of Medieval times, the Juliet & Romeo Franchise finds our most famous Star-Crossed lovers turning the tides on the history Shakespeare based his own story on, as they reveal the truth to the very future of the Empire.

But the biggest twist in this most beloved of tales, is leaving the poetry of Iambic Pentameter in the past, for the original Pop Music that rockets these ever-present themes right to the heart of our characters in the most surprising, and perhaps most powerful way that has ever been seen, or heard, before… the greatest love story of all time, set to the greatest music of our time.

Phineas and Ferb Season 5 Brilliantly Welcomes Fans Back To The Chaos

Phineas and Ferb season 5 is the perfect welcome back to this world for fans, making it feel like we never even left our favorite summer. This review is based solely on the first two episodes of the new season.

Phineas and Ferb season 5 review
PHINEAS AND FERB – “Model Pack” (Disney) PHINEAS, FERB

Ten years ago, we said an emotional goodbye to Phineas and Ferb. They entertained us with countless wild inventions and crazy schemes as their sister, Candace, worked tirelessly to get them in trouble. But in a world of reboots and revivals, I am extremely thankful that Phineas and Ferb, one of my favorite television series, has made its way back to the small screen.

PHINEAS AND FERB – “Summer Block Buster” (Disney) PHINEAS

From the very first line in Phineas and Ferb season 5, fans are welcomed back to this world as if we never left. It may have only been nine months for the characters, but it has been far longer for us, and it is so, so good to be back.

This series is known for its catchy songs, and even though I have only seen the first two episodes of the season (four shorts), I can promise you that they are following this trend, as I cannot stop singing the latest hits. They are just as meta, honest, and hilarious as they have been in the past. Thankfully, Bowling For Soup is back as well.

PHINEAS AND FERB – “Summer Block Buster” (Disney) CANDACE

Part of the reason this revival works as well and as seamlessly as it does is because the original cast has returned. All of the characters sound and look exactly the same. It might be a school year later, but none of them have aged, and I love that. Candace is just as determined to catch her brothers as she was the previous summer – that girl will never learn that no matter how hard she tries, they will always outsmart without even trying to.

PHINEAS AND FERB – “Summer Block Buster” (Disney) DOOFENSHMIRTZ, NORM

Of course, it wouldn’t be Phineas and Ferb without Dr. Doofenshmirtz coming up with crazy inators and trying to take over the Tri-State area. We might have thought he gave up being evil, but as soon as summer rolled around, he decided to go back to his old ways. I was worried about how they would handle this but honestly, it is perfect.

PHINEAS AND FERB – “Model Pack” (Disney) PERRY

Doofenshmirtz return to evil means that Agent P must go back to stopping him in his tracks. While Perry never officially retired (we see him taking on a metal scorpion when he is called to go up against Doofenshmirtz for the first time this season), it is great to see the two nemisis battling it out again.

PHINEAS AND FERB – “Model Pack” (Disney) DOOFENSHMIRTZ

I have always loved this show, and sometimes, when something like this comes back, it is subpar. Not this time. It is clear that just as much love and attention has gone into the newest season of Phineas and Ferb as the previous ones. This is very much a continuation, seamlessly connecting the final episode we saw ten years ago to the first one of season 5.

“It’s Super Iconic”: Maggie Blue O’Hara Reflects on 25 Years of Kitty Pryde and The Uncanny Experience

Maggie Blue O’Hara, voice of Kitty Pryde, celebrates X-Men: Evolution‘s 25th anniversary. She reflects on her time as the iconic character and talks The Uncanny Experience, in this interview.

The Uncanny Experience Celebrates X-Men: Evolution's 25th Anniversary

As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the beloved animated series X-Men: Evolution, we were thrilled to catch up with Maggie Blue O’Hara, the iconic voice behind the spirited and fan-favorite character, Kitty Pryde. July’s epic The Uncanny Experience is just around the corner, where fans will be able to meet her, as well as other X-Men favorites.

In this interview, Maggie reflects on the show’s enduring legacy, her cherished memories from her time as part of the X-Men family, and what fans can look forward to at this special event.

Maggie Blue O’Hara Reflects On The Iconic Series – X-Men: Evolution

"It's Super Iconic": Maggie Blue O'Hara Reflects on 25 Years of Kitty Pryde and The Uncanny Experience

Tessa Smith: What’s it like to reflect on the show now a quarter century later?

Maggie Blue O’Hara: When the last season of X-Men Evolution wrapped up 25 years ago, I had fallen in love with a Chinese theater director. We moved to Hong Kong and started the All Theater Art Association, a bilingual multimedia dance theater company. We created original productions where I co-wrote scripts, choreographed, and performed lead roles. We toured those shows worldwide, which was an amazing experience. Since then, I’ve had many other creative projects.

Tessa Smith: Are there any new insights or feelings about the series that have emerged over time?

Maggie Blue O’Hara: I simply appreciate being a part of such an iconic show. I’m grateful for the experience and that fans still remember it. I’m proud of the good work I did on the show, and that people still appreciate it.

Tessa Smith: What do you think makes Kitty Pryde such an enduring and beloved character?

Maggie Blue O’Hara: Kitty Pryde was a teenager, unlike some of the older characters who were already adults. I think people reading the comics appreciated that she was also a teenager and found her more relatable—that feeling of trying to fit in and finding her way as an awkward teenager.

Reunions and Revelations: The Uncanny Experience Awaits

"It's Super Iconic": Maggie Blue O'Hara Reflects on 25 Years of Kitty Pryde and The Uncanny Experience

Tessa Smith: What do you anticipate will be the most rewarding part of interacting with X-Men fans?

Maggie Blue O’Hara: It’s always awesome to be around X-Men Evolution fans because they remember the episodes and lines from the show, and they appreciate the work I’ve done. We can all reminisce together, which will be fun.

Tessa Smith: Can you recall a memorable fan encounter?

Maggie Blue O’Hara: The first cosplay anime convention I ever went to was in 2014 in London. You can actually find a whole interview about it on YouTube by searching “Maggie Blue O’Hara London anime convention interview.” It was a great experience to be among hundreds of fans for the first time who truly appreciated my work and the show.

Tessa Smith: You’ll be joined by Steven E. Gordon and Meghan. Have you had a chance to reconnect with them?

Maggie Blue O’Hara: I’ve never met Steven before. The last time I saw Meghan in person, we were in our 20s, so it’ll be awesome to reminisce with her. We’re both mothers now, so we can talk about our kids and how much life experience we’ve had since the show. I’m grateful to Steven E. Gordon because he’s given me permission to use his original illustrations. I have a bunch of them, and we’re going to print them out to have available for sale at the market with my autograph. I’m excited about having some original work that people have never seen before for sale at the convention in July.

Bringing Kitty Pryde to Life: Character, Powers, and Advice

"It's Super Iconic": Maggie Blue O'Hara Reflects on 25 Years of Kitty Pryde and The Uncanny Experience

Tessa Smith: Kitty’s powers of phasing – how did you mentally prepare for that?

Maggie Blue O’Hara: Yes, I used my imagination. I imagined her frequency changing, her molecular structure changing, and I thought about how that would feel emotionally.

Tessa Smith: If you could give Kitty Pryde one piece of advice, what would it be?

Maggie Blue O’Hara: I also have a 15-year-old daughter, and the advice I give young girls is to focus on yourself, focus on your dreams, and focus on your own heart and beliefs because they are important and valid. Don’t worry about boys or other kids’ opinions in school, and don’t be afraid to be yourself and speak your truth.

Tessa Smith: Beyond X-Men, Kitty Pryde has a long, rich history in the comics. Were you familiar with the characters?

Maggie Blue O’Hara: To be honest, no. I just got the audition and didn’t really consider the importance of X-Men and its history when I was auditioning. I simply connected to her awkwardness as a teenager trying to fit in, and also to her inner confidence, strength, and powers, which I always connected to. That’s what resonated with me during the audition.

Tessa Smith: Is there anything specific you learned or took away from your time working on X-Men?

Maggie Blue O’Hara: I always remembered, enjoyed, and appreciated the camaraderie, strength, and friendships that were built among all the actors during those four years. It was probably one of the most fun experiences I had over my many years and hundreds of episodes on different shows. I carried that camaraderie with me, and whenever I had the chance to work with large groups of voiceover actors on other shows, I always made sure we were friends and listened to each other during the process.

Tessa Smith: If Kitty Pryde were to attend The Uncanny Experience, what do you think she’d be most excited to see or do?

Maggie Blue O’Hara: Well, I am part of Kitty Pryde, and we are looking forward to doing karaoke, dressing up, being at the dance party, and meeting more friends. Woohoo, let’s go! See you in July, everyone!

“Gus Is A Cool Dude Now”: Paul Rust on Love and His New Animated Special

What are Gus & Mickey up to? Paul Rust spills a fun Love hypothetical and discusses his heartwarming new special, Lulu Is a Rhinoceros.

"Gus Is A Cool Dude Now": Paul Rust on Love and His New Animated Special

Fans of Netflix’s beloved romantic comedy Love, myself included, often wonder what became of Gus Cruikshank and Mickey Dobbs after the series finale. In our interview with actor Paul Rust, who played Gus, he offers a delightful hypothetical glimpse into their future, alongside discussing his heartwarming new Apple TV+ musical special, Lulu Is a Rhinoceros.

Where Are Love’s Gus & Mickey Now? Paul Rust Offers His Thoughts

When asked about Gus and Mickey’s post-series life, Rust paints a humorous and intriguing picture of how their personalities might have intertwined. “I would like to think that right now it’s sort of that the characters now have, you know when two people get together and they sort of start taking each other’s traits on? I’d like to think now that Gus is a cool dude and Mickey is the shy, repressed person. I think that would be a fun little switcheroo.

This playful reversal offers a compelling continuation for fans who’ve missed the quirky couple, leaving the door open for dreams of a Love movie or revival, perhaps even with a singing animal cameo, as Rust jokingly suggests.

Lulu The Rhinoceros Delivers Important Themes & Stunning Animation

Paul Rust Lulu Is A Rhinoceros Interview

Rust voices Finn the pigeon in the upcoming Apple TV+ musical special, Lulu Is a Rhinoceros. The animated special, which tackles themes of self-acceptance and inner identity, clearly resonated with Rust. “That was one of the best aspects of getting to work on this was the idea in the story about self-acceptance and this idea that sometimes your insides don’t necessarily match your outsides and how do you communicate to people how you feel?” he shared.

The musical format, he adds, was a joy: “When words can no longer express the power of your thoughts and feelings, you have to break into song. That was also just so much fun to get to do.

He praises the animation, a stark contrast to the cheaply produced cartoons he recalls from his youth he jokes. “The animation is spectacular. It’s really beautiful,” Rust expresses. “To get to be a part of something that is artful is really great… to get to be a part of something that just looks beautiful and sounds beautiful and has these amazing characters, it is a really special thing to be a part of.

Rust particularly enjoyed Finn’s character arc, echoing the classic “Ebenezer Scrooge” transformation from “grouch” to “friend,” a journey every actor loves to portray.

Paul Rust Lulu Is A Rhinoceros Interview

The excitement around Lulu Is a Rhinoceros extends beyond its initial release. Creators Jason and Allison Flom have already revealed that a second “Lulu” book is in the works, hinting at the potential for future specials or even a series. When asked if he would return to play Finn, Rust’s answer was an emphatic “Oh, well, yes. A thousand times. Yes.” He added, “To get to play a pigeon was a dream come true.

Lulu Is a Rhinoceros comes to Apple TV+ on May 30 and promises a heartfelt story, beautiful animation, and incredible music that champions self-acceptance for young viewers. And for those Love fans, keep your fingers crossed – you never know when Gus and Mickey might just reappear!

Death’s Grand Return: Craig Perry Reveals Final Destinations: Bloodlines’ Killer Secrets

Producer Craig Perry reveals the creative secrets behind Final Destination: Bloodlines‘ thrilling deaths, family ties, and that iconic ending.

Just one week after its highly anticipated release, Final Destinations: Bloodlines has not only sent shivers down spines but has also racked up an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score from both audiences and critics, much to the delight of its long-time producer, Craig Perry. In an exclusive interview with Mama’s Geeky, Perry, who has been a part of every bone-chilling installment of the iconic horror franchise, offered a candid look into the film’s exciting success, clever nods to the past films, and the insanely exciting deaths that fans look forward to.

You never know if it’s going to connect,” Perry admits, reflecting on the film’s overwhelmingly positive reception. “You do all the things you think that are going to make people happy, and you’re going to push them a little bit, and get them intrigued in ways they didn’t anticipate.

He attributes much of this success to the 14-year absence since the last film, creating an anticipation from long-time fans, as well as the final performance of horror icon Tony Todd. “People were really wanting to see Tony Todd in his last performance, in a way that gave it a level of poignancy and anticipation,” Perry shares. “And I think we delivered, certainly, at least Tony delivered on that front. We just gave him the platform and he took it.

A Fresh Dynamic: The Family That Dies Together

Final Destination: Bloodlines review

One of the most praised elements of Final Destinations: Bloodlines is its focus on a central family, a departure that audiences have embraced. Unlike previous films where protagonists often were connected by simply being in the same place at the same time, Bloodlines immediately immerses viewers in relatable relationships. “I’m glad you say that you liked the characters,” Perry remarked, acknowledging that character connection was a conscious evolution for this film. “It’s something that we understood is why maybe the other movies didn’t play out as anticipated.

Jon Watts coming to us with the story about it being a family automatically gives you buy-in,” Perry explains. “We are all in families for all their crazy, mixed-up, loving, hating, fighting ways. It just immediately creates both empathy and understanding of the relationship dynamics. We didn’t have to actually over-explain how they knew each other. They’re just a cousin. We all got cousins.” This familial foundation allows for immediate emotional investment from the audience.

Perry also praises the cast for their undeniable chemistry. “We got so lucky,” he exclaims. “You never know if you’re going to get people together that really fully work. But before we even started shooting, they were all hanging out, going out to karaoke. They still have an hourly active WhatsApp thread with just the actors. A year after we wrapped, they’re still tight as thieves. It’s great.” The genuine camaraderie among the cast translates into believable on-screen performances, making each character’s struggle against Death all the more impactful.

The Art of the Ultimate Demise and the Return of a Classic

review Final Destination Bloodlines

Final Destination films are synonymous with their elaborate and often darkly humorous death sequences, and Bloodlines is no exception. Perry humorously noted the franchise’s overarching goal: “What industry, profession, or occupation can we destroy with this next movie? What can we do to instill what will hopefully be generational trauma in the people who view the movie?

This pursuit of unique ways to meet one’s end led to the standout MRI scene, a sequence so impactful it was previewed at CinemaCon. Perry reveals a hidden Easter Egg within this scene: “Did you notice when his torso was inside the MRI and all the bits and pieces of the wheelchair coming through, that that’s the poster for FD5?” These subtle nods are part of the “wink, wink, nudge, nudge” that enriches the viewing experience for dedicated fans.

But the real showstopper, especially for long-time fans, was the film’s ending, bringing back a terrifying staple from the franchise’s history: the log truck. Perry revealed this brilliant callback was the brainchild of visual effects supervisor Nordin Rahhali.

As we were designing the animation [during the final scene], he came to us and said, ‘I have an idea. What if there were log trucks on the train? And when it comes over, that’s what takes them out?‘” Perry recalls a collective moment of “joy and rapture and inner peace” among the team when the idea was presented.

It’s not just the moment of seeing how death ultimately gets what it’s due him, but it’s the manner in which it happens.” This moment, almost entirely done in post-production, exemplifies the collaborative spirit that Perry fosters on set and in the writer’s room.

Everybody has a seat at the table because everybody has ideas, and it’s our job to curate those ideas.” He adds, “We want an open-door policy with all the department heads. This creative freedom even extends to the props department, who secretly embedded many Easter eggs, seven of which Perry himself has yet to discover.

The Scenes That Didn’t Make It: The Supermarket of Doom

Final Destination: Bloodlines review

Not every idea makes it to the big screen, though. Perry shared an intriguing anecdote about a planned sequence that never saw the light of day with us.

We wrote an entire sequence that took place in a supermarket because everybody goes grocery shopping once a week. Everybody goes there.” Despite the universal appeal of the setting, the scene ultimately failed to meet the franchise’s exacting standards for “plausible and credible” deaths. “We wrote the whole thing, put it away for a couple of days, looked at it, we’re like, this is dog shit. This is terrible. And it was terrible because it was trying too hard.

This commitment to a razor’s edge of believability is paramount for the franchise, ensuring that even the most outlandish deaths maintain a terrifying grounding in reality. “Not every location that you and I frequent is a good destination,” Perry concludes, citing the tattoo parlor as an example of a setting that did lend itself well to the film’s unique brand of horror.

The warm reception for Final Destinations: Bloodlines, particularly for its compelling characters, inventive death sequences, and the powerful presence of Tony Todd, fuels hope for future installments.

Will we have more? I hope so,” Perry says optimistically. “I think it would be so much fun to do. And as long as we listen to the audience and we respect the desires of what they want, and do what we did with this one, which was very carefully approached so that the love that we have for the franchise shows up in the movie.

Final Destination: Bloodlines is up against some heavy hitters this weekend at the box office, but as Perry put it, “For the best experience, go see Final Destination: Bloodlines. The other two can wait.” With its blend of nostalgic nods, cast chemistry, and the ever-present threat of Death, it seems the franchise’s grip on our deepest fears is stronger than ever.

Be sure to watch our full interview with Craig Perry and go see Final Destination: Bloodlines on the biggest screen possible during its theatrical run.

The Phoenician Scheme Review: Wes Anderson At His Best

0

Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme features showstopping performances by Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, and Michael Cera.

The Phoenician Scheme Review

No one has ever doubted that they are watching a Wes Anderson film while doing so. He has an extremely unique and very obvious style, which is one of the things I love most about his work. Wes Anderson movies are always absolutely gorgeous, and The Phoenician Scheme is no different. While it is not my favorite film of his (that honor goes to The Grand Budapest Hotel with Isle of Dogs immediately behind it), I do think it is some of his best work.

The Phoenician Scheme Movie Review

The Phoenician Scheme Review

Every movie of his has a stacked and insanely talented cast. Some of the best working actors today might show up in the movie for less than five minutes (as Scarlett Johansson does in this one), but that does not mean they don’t give it their all.

Benicio del Toro leads The Phoenician Scheme, along with Mia Threapleton and Michael Cera. All three performances are the best I have ever seen from these actors, which says a lot. They are truly showstopping and completely captivating, knowing exactly how to keep the audience engaged and intrigued.

Cera, in particular, should be applauded as, without spoilers, he goes through a small change at one point and somehow becomes even funnier. He was the perfect choice to play Bjorn. I absolutely must know what it was like to be handling all those bugs constantly.

Benicio del Toro’s portrayal of a man who has been raised to be… not so great, and the way he is passing that along to his children, is one that many of us can relate to. It is the age-old theory of nature versus nurture. A truly brilliant performance.

This might be Mia Threapleton’s first time in a Wes Anderson film, but you would never know it. She fits into this world perfectly, delivering a performance that is simultaneously lacking in emotion (per Anderson’s style) and interesting. She knocks this one out of the park.

The Phoenician Scheme Review

As always, this Wes Anderson movie is filled to the brim with movie stars. Some pop in for just one scene, but every one of them leaves a lasting impression. One of my favorite sequences includes Tom Hanks and Bryan Cranston. I was laughing so hard my cheeks hurt. This scene is one of the best in the film because it is so ridiculous, yet fun. The dry humor that Wes Anderson films are known for oozes through this scene.

The Phoenician Scheme Review

Of course, the aesthetic that Anderson is known for can be recognized in every scene in The Phoenician Scheme as well. From the sets, to the costumes, even down to the hair and makeup, this film screams Wes Anderson.

This movie comes out swinging, with a shocking event setting the tone for it right out of the gate. From that very moment on, I was clinging to the edge of my seat. While I did enjoy Anderson’s last few films, this one is my favorite of the bunch. It is fun, witty, charming, and bizarre – just like most of his movies – but it is the cast performances that truly elevate to something special.

The Phoenician Scheme Review

While there are a few dull moments, they never last long and are almost always met with something thrilling and exciting at the end. The Phoenician Scheme is quirky, fun, and wholeheartedly Wes Anderson.

The Phoenician Scheme comes to theaters on June 6, and if you are a Wes Anderson fan, I highly recommend seeing it on the big screen.

Lilo & Stitch (2025) Is Disney’s Best Live-Action Remake Yet

While the bar was not exactly set very high, Lilo & Stitch (2025) soars past it to become the best Disney live-action remake yet.

Lilo & Stitch is one of my favorite animated films of all time. Something about the story of Ohana and the connection between Lilo, Stitch, and Nani has always stuck with me. So to say I was cautiously optimistic about the live-action remake is a bit of an understatement. I was terrified that something that means so much to me was going to be ruined. Thankfully, it wasn’t – even with the changes they imposed.

Get ready to fall in love all over again with Stitch, because the CG version of this crazy alien is going to capture your heart. He is adorable. They did a wonderful job capturing his mannerisms and his love for destruction. It doesn’t hurt that he is voiced once again by Chris Sanders.

Lilo & Stitch Have An Unforgettable Bond

This movie simply does not work without the instant bond that Lilo and Stitch have. The live-action version does a wonderful job of bringing that heartwarming friendship to the screen once again – which is largely in part because of the insanely talented Maia Kealoha. She is the perfect Lilo.

Kealoha portrays Lilo brilliantly. She is a bit off the walls, seemingly always wound up on sugar, and absolutely hilarious. The way that this young actress delivers the comedic relief, you would think she has been a comedian for years and years. She is phenomenal and easily the star of the show. Alongside Stitch of course.

Pleakley Outshines Jumba On All Levels

One of the changes that was made is that Pleakley and Jumba have a device that allows them to look like humans while on Earth. This was probably done to save Disney money, but it honestly makes a whole lot more sense than thinking humans would just ignore aliens in clothing and think they are other humans.

While Billy Magnussen perfectly embodies Pleakley and his excitement to be on Earth, Zach Galifianakis’ performance left me wanting more. I know what they were trying to do with him, especially because Captain Gantu is nowhere to be seen in this film, but so much of his one-liners did not work for me. It is unfortunate because I love him and always find him to be hilarious. In this case, he was vastly overshadowed by Pleakley – however, that might just be in the nature of the writing and the story that is being told.

The CG Is Extremelly Impressive

When it comes to the CG and the look of the aliens in Lilo & Stitch (2025), I have to admit, I was extremely impressed. The Grand Councilwoman looks so much like her animated counterpart, I was blown away. She is flawless, and while she is not in the movie a lot, Hannah Waddingham delivers a powerful, snarky, and incredible voice performance when she is.

Of course, Pleakley and Jumba look great as well, but once again, they are not often on screen in their alien form. Stitch is in nearly every scene, however, and he looks adorable. He is cute and fluffy, as he should be.

I Understand Why, But They Didn’t Need To Change The Ending

The family aspect is the most important part of Lilo & Stitch, there is no doubt about that. That messaging is still there, which shines through due to the unforgettable chemistry between Sydney Agudong’s Nani and Maia Kealoha’s Lilo. They are believable as sisters, which provides a lot of the moments that will tug on your heartstrings and make you tear up.

All of this to say, there is one part of Lilo & Stitch (2025) that really bothered me, and that is the ending. They changed the ending from the animated film slightly, but because of that, one of my favorite lines was removed from the movie. While I understand what they were going for here, and the themes of not leaving yourself behind, it just doesn’t hit as hard.

This might be Disney’s best live-action remake so far, but it isn’t perfect. It has its flaws. That said, Stitch will always win me over with his mischievous behaviour and adorable face.

Lilo & Stitch comes to theaters on May 23.

Dangerous Animals Review: A Bloody Feeding Frenzy Of Insanity

0

Dangerous Animals is the serial killer/shark mash-up you might not know you needed, but you’ll be thrilled you watched it.

dangerous animals review

When you hear the words shark and serial killer, it is unlikely you would ever imagine a movie in which a serial killer claims his victims by feeding them to sharks. That is exactly what Dangerous Animals is, and yes, it delivers on all fronts and is just as ridiculous and fun as you would imagine. This is the mash-up that I did not know I needed, and I am so thankful that Nick Lepard thought up this insane combination.

A premise like this could go either way, but it went the way that will have horror fans everywhere cringing, laughing, and cheering throughout the entire thing. Dangerous Animals breezes by in a cool ninety minutes, offering up a ton of fun through shark-infested waters and a dirty, grimy cell room in which the killer stores his victims.

dangerous animals review

Hassie Harrison (Zephyr) and Josh Heuston (Moses) have great chemistry on screen. So much so that it becomes easy to think he would be so captivated by her that even after just one night together, he would risk it all to be her knight in shining armor. Thanks to some great writing, the film kicks off with quite a bit of humor, and it doesn’t take long for viewers to fall in love with these two characters – ultimately rooting for them to make it out alive.

dangerous animals review

It wouldn’t be a shark serial killer movie without a lot of sharks, so thankfully, Dangerous Animals delivers on that front too. While I do not have an irrational fear of sharks like I do clowns, I am certainly not a fan of them (and this movie did not help). That said, it is easy to see that they really are beautiful creatures. There are a lot of great shots of them, in action and just swimming around majestically, that allow audiences to see they are dangerous, but gorgeous as well.

dangerous animals review

All of that said, my favorite part about this movie is Jai Courtney. He plays the serial killer, and boy, oh, boy, is he clearly having the time of his life filming. He leaves it all on the table, taking each and every scene he is in to the next level. Not only is he terrifying, but he plays unhinged extremely well. This is what made me genuinely scared of him. You honestly have no idea what he is going to do next.

Watching this movie in a theatrical setting is some of the most fun that I have had so far this year. Dangerous Animals goes hard. It knows when to be over-the-top and ridiculous, but it also knows when it needs to be grounded. This unique concept has me kind of hopping for a sequel.

dangerous animals review
Dangerous Animals

Harrison is fantastic in the film as well. She oozes girl power, and I love how she refuses to go down without a fight – something the killer admires in her as well. She is an absolute beast, a powerhouse, and I wish I were as cool as her.

While I don’t have any real complaints about this movie because I got exactly what I wanted out of it (and more), there is one small thing at the end that I felt to be unnecessary. It’s just one meh decision among a whole lot of great ones, so I felt no need to deduct any points, and it did not take away from my viewing experience at all. Just made me think, “huh. That was a choice.”

If you like to have fun, then I highly recommend you check out Dangerous Animals in theaters.
