Where Are Love’s Gus & Mickey Now? Paul Rust Offers His Thoughts
When asked about Gus and Mickey’s post-series life, Rust paints a humorous and intriguing picture of how their personalities might have intertwined. “I would like to think that right now it’s sort of that the characters now have, you know when two people get together and they sort of start taking each other’s traits on? I’d like to think now that Gus is a cool dude and Mickey is the shy, repressed person. I think that would be a fun little switcheroo.”
This playful reversal offers a compelling continuation for fans who’ve missed the quirky couple, leaving the door open for dreams of a Love movie or revival, perhaps even with a singing animal cameo, as Rust jokingly suggests.
Lulu The Rhinoceros Delivers Important Themes & Stunning Animation
Rust voices Finn the pigeon in the upcoming Apple TV+ musical special, Lulu Is a Rhinoceros. The animated special, which tackles themes of self-acceptance and inner identity, clearly resonated with Rust. “That was one of the best aspects of getting to work on this was the idea in the story about self-acceptance and this idea that sometimes your insides don’t necessarily match your outsides and how do you communicate to people how you feel?” he shared.
The musical format, he adds, was a joy: “When words can no longer express the power of your thoughts and feelings, you have to break into song. That was also just so much fun to get to do.“
He praises the animation, a stark contrast to the cheaply produced cartoons he recalls from his youth he jokes. “The animation is spectacular. It’s really beautiful,” Rust expresses. “To get to be a part of something that is artful is really great… to get to be a part of something that just looks beautiful and sounds beautiful and has these amazing characters, it is a really special thing to be a part of.”
Rust particularly enjoyed Finn’s character arc, echoing the classic “Ebenezer Scrooge” transformation from “grouch” to “friend,” a journey every actor loves to portray.
The excitement around Lulu Is a Rhinoceros extends beyond its initial release. Creators Jason and Allison Flom have already revealed that a second “Lulu” book is in the works, hinting at the potential for future specials or even a series. When asked if he would return to play Finn, Rust’s answer was an emphatic “Oh, well, yes. A thousand times. Yes.” He added, “To get to play a pigeon was a dream come true.”
Lulu Is a Rhinoceros comes to Apple TV+ on May 30 and promises a heartfelt story, beautiful animation, and incredible music that champions self-acceptance for young viewers. And for those Love fans, keep your fingers crossed – you never know when Gus and Mickey might just reappear!
