6 Tips for Enjoying Universal Studios Orlando with Young Kids

Universal Studios

I used to live in Florida and have been to Universal Studios Orlando more times than I can count. I even had an annual pass for a few years. I recently went for the first time with young kids (3 and 4 years old) and I admit, I was a little nervous about it at first. I wasn’t sure what they would be able to do and if it would be worth it. Well, it was totally worth it! I have put together some tips and tricks to make sure that you and your kids can have a great time at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida!

Universal Studios   Universal Studios

Utilize the Baby Swap

If you are like me than you love all theme park rides – roller coasters included. My husband and I have been spending days at theme parks since well before we had kids so when we take them, it feels like a bummer to not be able to go on the “big” rides. But thanks to baby swap – we can (without having to wait in long lines twice). Simply tell a cast member that you will be using baby swap for any children that are too small to ride and they will let you know where to go.

One of you will wait with the child(ren) who cannot ride, while the other goes on the ride. Once they get off, you just swap places and the other adult gets to ride. Universal even allows any child that was old enough to ride, to go again with you – no waiting in line again required! Utilizing the baby swap means you don’t have to miss out on your favorite rides, and you don’t have to wait in long lines more than once.

Grab an Express Pass

Speaking of long lines, if you are taking little ones to the park, it makes sense to grab express passes. For a small fee you can skip the long lines and hop in the “express lane” for a much shorter wait. The pass works on most rides at both parks (check out the list of rides here) and can significantly lower the time you spend waiting in lines. There are two options – the regular pass and the unlimited pass. Though a little bit pricier, the unlimited pass allows you to go on each ride as many times as you want while with the regular pass, you can only go on each ride once.

One thing I love about these passes is that they are not guest specific. Meaning if you are enjoying the park with a larger group, you can mix and match who uses the passes that you have purchased. The express pass made it much easier to go on rides with my friends while my mom was waiting with the girls because we were in and out (and I didn’t feel guilty about her having to wait an hour or so for us to be done). During my last visit, I literally walked on Revenge of the Mummy and The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man.

Rent a Stroller

Trust me, getting a double stroller for the day was a life saver. It was less than $25 and beyond worth it. Not only could the girls catch a little snooze now and then, but we could also store our souvenirs and drinks in it. If we had tried to tackle the parks without it, we would have done a lot of carrying the girls, and that would have been exhausting. When going from park to park you simply turn the stroller in and take your receipt to the rental area at the other park to pick up a new one. Easy!

Keep an Eye out for Characters

While you are walking around the park, be sure to keep an eye out for characters. Little ones love to meet familiar faces from their favorite TV shows and movies. I can honestly say that my daughters have talked more about getting to hug Spongebob Squarepants and Curious George than they have talked about the rides they went on. If you catch them at the right time, you will only wait a few minutes, and then you can be on your way.

I have to give props to the Universal Studios employees because my 4 year old was having a slight meltdown (she only had one all day – I consider that a win!) when we were meeting Popeye. After she was back in the stroller and calmed down, he came over to talk to her. She loves the black and white Popeye cartoons so that was a big deal for her – and she loves to tell everyone about it. Some of the characters we interacted with were Boots (from Dora the Explorer), Diego, The Simpsons, Woody Woodpecker, Popeye and Olive Oil, Optimus Prime, Minions, and Spider-Man – we also saw Sideshow Bob but he disappeared before we could get to him.

Universal Studios

Check Out All the Play Areas

Scattered throughout each of the parks are play areas. This is a great way to break up the day when your children need to get out and run around. There are slides, water features, and so much more. Take advantage of them and give your kids about 10 minutes to burn some energy while you enjoy and snack or a drink. In Islands of Adventure you will find Camp Jurassic, If I Ran The Zoo, Jurassic Park Discovery Center, and Me Ship, The Olive. Over at Universal Studios, you can explore Curious George Goes to Town and Fievel’s Playland.

Universal Studios

Get Lunch at Springfield

Over in the Springfield area, we discovered the best place to sit and have lunch. On “Fast Food Boulevard” there is truly something for everyone. You wait in one line and then have the choice of several different places to order from – Krusty Burger, The Frying Dutchman, Cletus’ Chicken Shack, Luigi’s Pizza, Lard Lad Donuts, and Lisa’s Treehouse of Horror. Within my group we got a salad, pizza, and chicken thumbs. Everything was delicious and there were no complaints.

My favorite part about eating here is that they reserve a spot for you to sit while you are in line and then walk you to your seat. That means no walking around with a tray of food and hungry kids for 10+ minutes looking for a spot to sit and eat. On your way out, you can even stop at Moe’s Tavern and grab a (non-alcoholic) Flaming Moe!

My daughters were thrilled to see the new DVD, Campberry Stories, released. We watched it right away and loved every minute of it. This is a great summer movie to watch with your little ones! Walt Disney Animation Studios’ comedy-adventure “Zootopia” has broken records worldwide, earning nearly $1 billion at the global box office and becoming one of the highest grossing original movies of all time. Critics and audiences of all ages have fallen in love with the wonderfully innovative mammal metropolis of “Zootopia” and the comedic chemistry of rookie rabbit officer Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and scam-artist fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman). In fact, critics have hailed “Zootopia” as one of the best films of 2016 and Richard Roeper from Chicago Sun-Times calls it “One of the best animated films ever.”

Zootopia Teaches Kids They Can Be Anything They Want To Be

zootopia dvd

My husband and I took our daughters to see Zootopia in theaters opening weekend. It was something we had all been looking forward to since we heard about it – and it did not disappoint. Now it is finally being released to Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital HD (June 7th!) and we were thrilled to get our hands on it a little early. The night it arrived we grabbed some popcorn and popped it in. It was even better than I had remembered. I am such a huge fan of this movie because of the lessons that it has taught my young daughters. I mean, when does Disney ever fail at morals of their stories – never.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BCneVuJvvnN/

Without giving anything away (because I want everyone to experience this movie with new eyes), Zootopia will let your children know that it is OK to be whatever you want to be. Just because you are a small animal (like Judy Hopps) doesn’t mean you can;t be a police officer – and just because the stereotype of being a fox (like Nick Wilde) means you should be sly and cunning, that doesn’t mean you can’t be a good guy too. My (almost) 5 year old absolutely adores this movie. She got the moral of the story right away and I am so proud of her for it. Even my 3.5 year old loves the movie. It kept her attention all the way through (which says a lot when it comes to her). We all found ourselves laughing, and yes, mommy even shed a few tears. Zootopia is the perfect family film!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BCnwHkmPvm0/

Synopsis
The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia” is a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”).

Features include candid conversations with filmmakers and artists behind Zootopia, an alternate opening, never-before-seen characters and deleted scenes and a sneak peek at some of the hidden Easter Eggs that make reference to Disney Animation’s most beloved films and characters.
Bonus features include:
BLU-RAY 3D, BLU-RAY & DIGITAL HD:
  • Zoology: The Roundtables – Ginnifer Goodwin hosts an in-depth look at the movie’s characters, animation, environments and more. The artists at Disney Animation give a rare and in-depth look at the complexities of bringing an all-animal world to life from the ground-breaking technology behind the characters’ fur and clothing to the varied and vast environments of Tundratown, Sahara Square and the Rainforest District as well as the deep thought and research given to bringing 64 unique animal species to life through animation.
  • The Origin of an Animal Tale – Follow the story’s development from its origins to a big story shift that turned the film upside down. In this feature-length documentary, filmmakers give a candid look into the difficulties of creating the story of Zootopia and the bold decision to switch the main character late in the production process, putting one resolute rabbit center stage.
  • Research: A True-Life Adventure – The filmmakers traveled the globe to find inspiration for the diverse characters and amazing city of Zootopia. They reflect on the importance of research and how a deep dive into animal behavior at Disney Animal Kingdom theme park and a deep immersion into animal society on the African savanna shaped and inspired the characters of Zootopia and changed the filmmakers’ lives forever.
  • Z.P.D. Forensic Files – Find the movie’s hidden Easter Eggs. Every city has its hidden gems, especially when it has been created by the filmmakers of Disney Animation who love nothing more than sprinkling hidden references to some of Disney’s greatest animated features throughout the story.
  • Scoretopia – Academy Award®-winning composer, Michael Giacchino spotlights five of cinema’s greatest percussionists and how they brought an organic, animalistic sound to his powerful and emotional music score.
  • Deleted Characters – Directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore introduce citizens of Zootopia who did not make the final cut.
  • Deleted Scenes:
    • Alternate Opening – Young Judy Hopps rescues a fellow classmate and realizes she can reach beyond a life in carrot farming to a future in law enforcement.
    • Wild Times! Pitch – Nick desperately pitches the bankers of Zootopia on funding Wild Times!, an amusement park made exclusively for the predators of Zootopia and a sure-fire, money-making scheme for Nick and his friends.
    • Alternate Homesick Hopps – After a frustrating first day on the force, Judy has a conversation with her parents.  See how this scene changed from a heartfelt conversation with her parents to tough love when her parents discover their daughter is only a meter maid and not a “real cop.”
    • Detective Work – Judy borrows a fellow police officer’s computer to conduct research, which turns out to be no small task.
    • Alternate Jumbo Pop – In this early version of the story where Nick was the main character, the filmmakers and Jason Bateman were able to take hustling to a new level.
    • Hopps’ Apartment – When Judy’s entire family pays her a surprise visit they are shocked to discover the company she’s keeping.
    • The Taming Party – In this emotional clip from an early version of “Zootopia,” Judy attends her first “taming party” and gains a deeper understanding of the plight of the predator.

Sofia the First The Secret Library

My daughters are HUGE Sofia the First fans. In fact,  on their first trip to Disney World, we waited in line for over an hour to get a photo with her. Their reactions were priceless and made it totally worth it. So much so that the second time we took them we opted to attend the Nick Jr. breakfast. Yes, my daughters (who are 3 and 4) have been to Disney World twice already. We are a Disney family and we plan to visit their every year that we vacation. We are raising our daughters to be big into Disney and Disney Junior – so they were quite thrilled to see a brand new Sofia the First DVD arrive at our door! Sofia the First: The Secret Library is a collection of some of the best Sofia episodes (in my opinion) and it even includes a FREE Sofia necklace inside! My daughters have watched this DVD through more times than I can count already. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows In Theaters Now!

TMNT Poster

My husband and I are raising our daughters right – they are HUGE Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans. They are only 3 and 4 but boy do they love these turtles. They love the animated shows of course, but they even enjoy the “real people” versions of the movies (as they call them). My oldest is probably the biggest TMNT fan there is – she has pink TMNT sheets, multiple TMNT clothes including shirts, dresses, and socks, and more TMNT toys than I can count. She just sent out invitations to her 5th birthday party later this month and what theme did she choose? Ninja Turtles! She has been dying to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows and my husband and I decided that we will take her this weekend – yes, opening weekend is finally here! I grew up on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and so did my husband.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS
Left to right: Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows from Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies and Platinum Dunes Productions

Heroes in a halfshell – they are a favorite of ours! We have been counting the days for Out of the Shadows to hit theaters since it was announced. I cannot believe the day is finally here. We have had tickets to see the movie at our local theater for a while now. We will be there tomorrow morning – will you be seeing it this weekend? It looks like such a fun movie – filled with action and humor. My husband’s favorite character is Casey Jones, so he is thrilled to see him join the cast. My (almost) 5 year old loves when Raph hits the airplane window and his tongue is hanging out – she reinacts that scene from the trailer all of the time. How could you not want to see the movie after these clips?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows in theaters today!

Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael return to theaters this summer to battle bigger, badder villains, alongside April O’Neil (Megan Fox), Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett), and a newcomer: the hockey-masked vigilante Casey Jones (Stephen Amell). Sid the Science Kid: Invent & Investigate Volume 3 on DVD Now!

Sid the Sceince Kid

My daughters are huge fans of Sid the Science Kid. It is one of our favorite PBS Kids shows because they learn so much from it. If you ask my 3 year old the colors of the rainbow, she will sing “Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet too!” which she learned from this show.

Oh, and did I mention that she has been singing that for nearly a year now. It is amazing the stuff that they have picked up on thanks to Sid! They both have very curious minds, much like Sid, and so this show has really helped them learn and grow. I was super thrilled to be able to pass along a new DVD, Sid the Science Kid: Invent & Investigate Volume 3, filled with science fun.

My husband is an engineer and we both strongly believe in the importance of STEM and our little ones. So Sid the Science Kid is a show we, as a family, really get behind.

About Sid The Science Kid

Sid the Science Kid is an inquisitive little boy who uses comedy to tackle questions kids have about basic scientific principles. Why do things work the way they do? He tries to answer each question and solve problems with the help of his family, Teacher Susie, and his classmates, Gabriela, Gerald, and May. In this third volume, Sid and his friends learn all about simple machines, how animals communicate, the importance of dirt, what makes leaves special, bugs and more! When a wheel falls off of Sid’s favorite toy truck, he tries to tape it back on – but the wheel won’t spin.

This leads Sid to wonder, how exactly do wheels work? At school, Sid explores how wheels are simple machines that help move all kinds of items like cars, trains, tricycles and even toy trucks! Let’s invent and investigate with our favorite scientist, Sid the Science Kid!
