The Fan Connection is a great independent documentary that does a fantastic job of highlighting the unbreakable bond that groups of people often feel with each other when they are like minded in something, specifically, in their support for a favorite sports team. As a sports fan myself, I know this connection quite well — but I also feel it when it comes to my favorite fandoms. Because of that, this documentary made me smile thinking about that bond, and seeing that others feel that way too.
As a season ticket holder for the SUNY Oswego Lakers hockey team, I know that feeling of camaraderie that you get when you cheer for your team along with those surrounding you — even if they are strangers. It is a great feeling because you know that these other people are on the same page as you, at least in that moment, and you can have fun cheering together.
I grew up in Massachusetts where we are big on our sports teams, so I know all about seeing someone with a like mind while out and about, and nodding and smiling. This documentary, The Fan Connection, dives deep into the stories of several people, and why the Buffalo Sabres mean so much to them. It is extremely touching, and had me really, really missing being able to attend hockey games in person.
Even if you are not a hockey fan, and even if you are not from the Buffalo area, I am willing to be that there is something you will be able to relate to in this film, and that it will touch you in some way. Like I said above, this is the same sort of bond that I feel with other Marvel fans, DC fans, and Harry Potter fans. There is something about that passion which creates a connection that can never be broken, and that is what The Fan Connection is all about.
