Sofia Boutella & Michiel Huisman Talk Rebel Moon Part 2

Sofia Boutella and Michiel Huisman reveal what they are most excited for fans to see in Rebel Moon Part 2, Zack Snyder’s action sequences, and more.

Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver continues the epic saga of Kora and the surviving warriors as they prepare to sacrifice everything, fighting alongside the brave people of Veldt, to defend a once peaceful village, a newfound homeland for those who have lost their own in the fight against the Motherworld.

We sat down with Sofia Boutella (Kora) and Michiel Huisman (Gunnar) to discuss the new film, which hits Netflix on May 17th. The two reveal what they are most excited for fans to see in this one, as well as talk the epic stunts they got to perform. Sofia details how her background in dance has helped her with action films and stunt choreography, and both her and Michiel detail what it is like working with Zack Snyder.

Tessa Smith: What are you most excited for fans to see in Rebel Moon 2: The Scargiver?

Sofia Boutella: I’m gonna say excited for fans to experience everybody’s backstory and where they come from, and what impact the Motherworld had on them, which is basically the motivation behind them joining the forces and joining the battle and fighting them. I’m also excited for people to experience our camaraderie, our friendship, and also maybe a romance between Gunnar and Kora.

Michiel Huisman: Yeah, that’s exciting to share. I’m also thinking of a moment that I find very funny which is when the rebels start training the villagers, and they turn out to be really bad ass. Nobody skips a beat, everybody’s with machetes and weapons.

Sofia Boutella: That will be fun. And also epic battles, epic fighting scenes, that’s going to be quite something in number two.

Tessa Smith: I always say Zack Snyder knows how to do an action sequence and oh boy, he doesn’t disappoint in this one. Now, Sofia, with you being a dancer, does that help with the stunt choreography?

Sofia Boutella: Oh, yeah, it’s everything. I owe so much to dance, everything that I was able to do in past action films, and especially this one. I got to really apply the discipline that I have learned and apply what I have trained my body to do, but towards another art form, which is stunts, which I’ve never done before. I got Kingsman, which was over 10 years ago, but I owe so much to dancing. Absolutely.

Tessa Smith: Do you have fun with the stuntwork?

Sofia Boutella: I do. A lot. I just don’t like hitting people. So that I don’t like. And I’m not very good at falling. I mean, I’m good at falling. But for example, tumbling down the hill, I wouldn’t be able to do that. I can slide down a ramp, though.

Michiel Huisman: I can slide. I love all that stuff, too. I enjoyed it, too. I didn’t have nearly as much stunt work in this film, compared to Sofia. But what I got to do, I really enjoyed.

Tessa Smith: What was it like working with Zack? I imagine he comes in with such a set vision.

Michiel Huisman: Yeah, he does come in with very strong ideas. But it never felt to me like there was no room in the moment to explore something else. I’m very grateful for that. Because it can also be very hard as an actor to feel like there’s not a lot of room to explore beyond the ideas that were already developed before you even came into the picture. So that was amazing. And a testament to his craft.

Sofia Boutella: Also I’ve just enjoyed so much working with someone who had all of that, for over 10 years, in his mind. In his head. And to see it come to life in the scale in which he came through. And for us to be in this massive playground. As actor, it’s just nothing but fun.

Michiel Huisman: That’s a good way to describe a Zack Snyder movie – a massive playground.
