The Mitchells vs. The Machines Director Mike Rianda Q&A
Director and writer Mike Rianda participated in a recent interview about this film and it was clear just how passionate he is about this movie. It took nearly 6 years to make (and boy are we all glad that it was made!).
Can you speak about how Monchi came about?
Mike Rianda: Monchi comes from a real dog. A real dog that was originally named Maggie, but then my sister changed his name to Monchi. She’s like, she seems more like a monkey, she’s got a lot of chaotic energy. And Mochi was like very wide on and very, was not quite as plump as the eventual Monchi. I think that the fatter dogs are the cuter they are. So that was that was part of the calculus there. But the initial Monchi was really earnest, and was trying her best and was not that good. She couldn’t really do anything and had to go to the vet a lot. But we really loved her. And then so when we had the Mitchells I definitely really wanted to put a pug in a movie. And also pug in a movie that looked like a real pug because sometimes, I feel like with pugs they kid of sand the edges off, but pugs are bizarre creatures that maybe shouldn’t exist.

Which of the deleted scenes do you wish made it to the original film?
Mike Rianda: Oh, that’s a great question. The funny thing is, I love all those deleted scenes, they are my children. And I wish them the best. And I want them to go into the world. But I will say, I’m kind of happy. They’re all gone. Because even though I think they’re really funny individually, and I’m proud of them, just watching them as a scene on its own. But I will say the taking them out made the movie better. The one that sort of like entertains me the most, because it’s sort of the one that’s the most different from the movie, is there’s a scene where the family as a family together, have to literally kidnap the President of the United States of America. But the movie could not support that storyline. It was too much of a weird left turn. But that’s the one that I think is fun.

About The Mitchells vs. The Machines
From the humans who brought you the Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The LEGO Movie comes The Mitchells vs. The Machines, an animated action-comedy about an ordinary family who find themselves in the middle of their biggest family challenge yet…saving the world from the robot apocalypse. No big deal, right?
It all starts when creative outsider Katie Mitchell is accepted into the film school of her dreams and is eager to leave home and find “her people,” when her nature-loving dad insists on having the whole family drive her to school and bond during one last totally-not-awkward-or-forced road trip. But just when the trip can’t get any worse, the family suddenly finds itself in the middle of the robot uprising!
Everything from smart phones, to roombas, to evil Furbys are employed to capture every human on the planet. Now it’s up to the Mitchells, including upbeat mom Linda, quirky little brother Aaron, their squishy pug, Monchi, and two friendly, but simple-minded robots to save humanity.
The Mitchells vs. The Machines comes home on digital, Blu-ray, and DVD on December 14th!
