Viewers will of course remember that Dick was beaten to death by a mob claiming to be doing it for Red Hood at the end of the last episode, and Raven was sensing it. Well this episode starts off with her telling Gar what is going on, and the two of them run through Gotham looking for him. They find him exactly where he faces Jason, dead.
However, we all know they just found the Lazarus Pit so instead of making us wait for what we know is inevitable, the idea to bring Dick there comes right away. But the way it is done is something completely unexpected. Gar is circled by a hoard of bats and ends up transforming into one. They carry Dick to the Lazarus Pit and lower him in. It took all the way to Titans Season 3 Episode 12 for a new transformation, but fans will be happy to see it.
Back at Tim’s family restaurant, Tim and Donna learn of Dick’s death. This causes his family to decide not to fight back, against Tim’s wishes, and they make plans to escape the city. Donna helps them load up an armored vehicle and drives them out of Gotham. When they arrive at the blockage, Donna and Tim’s father switch places.
Tim’s dad explains he is a retired police officer and that he signed up to help Crane. Of course the police ask to see what is the back of the truck and that is when Donna fights her way out, taking them down. There are sure to be some repercussions in the next episode.
In the Lazarus Pit Dick must fight to prove that he wants to return to the land of the living. He is haunted by Crane, who is telling him that he has failed everyone in his life. He chose the path of Bruce and not of his father. He was jealous of Jason and wished him dead after feeling like he stole Bruce from him.
Dick is then transformed into the Joker as Crane says Joker was the tool, but it was Dick who killed Jason. This scene has some incredible visuals as Dick is shown, in full Joker outfit, beating Jason with a crowbar. he stops himself though, saying this is not what he wants.
He then sees his father, who tells him it is ok, and he forgives him and loves him. Then a little girl appears holding a red balloon calling him dad. He is then in the Batcave, looking at a book of poems before appearing on the street. Jason is there but pushed out of the way by Crane who tells Dick it is too late. Dick ensures him that there is still time to help Jason and throws a punch at Crane.
The punch goes through the water in the Lazarus Pit and he is freed. Back to life and anxious to get to Jason. He tells Gar and Rachel to unite the Titans, and bring them to Donna, before rushing out of the room.
Meanwhile Blackfire has found Conner thanks to Krypto, and removes the kryptonite and heals him. The two decide to work together to tie up her loose ends, and then become a super duo, saying F the Titans for how they have treated them.
By tie up her loose ends she means going back to the facility that held her for so long — where Starfire and Beast Boy saved her. She threatens to kill the man who treated her so badly but he tells her he has something to offer her in exchange for his life.
He takes her to her ship, which can bring her home. She says that she does not want to go home but just then Starfire arrives, telling her all about her vision and what she learned. Now Blackfire has changed her mind and wishes to go home to be Queen of Tamaran.
There is one small issue, her ship does not have any fuel. However, Conner possesses the power to make more. She tells him she knows it is not fair of her to ask, but she wants him to help. He cannot survive on Tamaran, and she would be leaving him behind, breaking his heart.
He agrees to do it but as soon as the ship starts up, there is a problem with the fuel he made and it explodes. His face makes it very clear he did this on purpose to strand Blackfire on Earth. Seeing him change like this in Titans Season 3 Episode 12 was very unexpected.
When Dick finds Jason, Jason is surprised to see him alive. He asks him how he is standing there in front of him and Dick explains he went into the pit too, just like Jason did. Jason seems relieved, even if he won’t admit it. When Dick tells him that they need his help, Jason asks why, saying that he is a murderer.
Dick says that Jason knows Crane. He knows how he thinks and what he is planning, even if he doesn’t think that’s true. Jason thinks back to what Crane was mumbling about earlier in the episode before attacking him with the Scarecrow scythe.
Between Jason and Dick they figure out what Crane is up to — something he attempted before but Nightwing and Batman stopped him — setting off hundreds of bombs filled with fear gas in Gotham. Dick tells Jason he will never be a Titan again, but he can help save Gotham and hands him back his Red Hood helmet.
The fear gas is in the Gotham armory, but when Dick and Jason arrive it has already been stolen. Meaning the finale of Titans will focus on them trying to thwart his plan as the clock ticks down
Titans Season 3 Episode 12 Review
While this is very exciting to see Beast Boy finally turn into something besides a tiger this episode, the CGI does look a little silly at first. When it settles on his face though, it is pretty cool. Beast Boy actually becoming something else is exciting, but it is clear why they have waited so long — the budget just isn’t there for it to look as good as it could.
Having Conner betray Blackfire feels way out of character for him, but is also intriguing. He is changing and evolving. Doing this for love is sure to backfire in his face, but only time will tell. I can’t imagine that Commander is just going to forgive him for his actions.
It was clear that Jason was going to have to team up with the Titans to take down Crane at some point, and it was speculated it would be in the final few episodes. So while this was completely heartwarming to see, it wasn’t really a shock.
What was interesting though was Dick telling Jason he will never be a Titan again. This lines up with the comic book story line where Red Hood is his own vigilante, on his own terms. Hopefully Curran Walters sticks around in future seasons.
