Returning to Exandria for the fourth season of The Legend of Vox Machina felt like coming home to a group of rowdy, beloved friends. After the earth-shattering events of the Chroma Conclave, the stakes felt impossible to top, yet Season 4 manages to raise the bar by narrowing its focus. By starting with our heroes scattered across the realm – searching for love, family, and a sense of purpose that doesn’t involve dodging dragon fire – the show allows us to see who they are when they aren’t Vox Machina. But, as we quickly learn, the pull of fate (and a slumbering evil) is far stronger than any desire for a quiet life.
The reunion of the team is the highlight of the early episodes. There is something truly special (and emotional) about seeing them back together. Despite the year they spent apart, the chemistry remains electric. It feels as though no time has passed, even as we see the subtle ways they’ve grown. My only real gripe with the group dynamic this season is the reduced presence of Scanlan Shorthalt. While he isn’t as central to the primary arc this time around, Sam Riegel’s iconic bard still manages to steal every single scene he’s in.
On the flip side of things, one of the best parts of the season is the introduction of Taryon Darrington, voiced by the legendary Wayne Brady. I’ll be honest: I was initially skeptical of anyone other than Sam voicing this new member of the crew, but Brady is an inspired casting choice. He captures Taryon’s pomposity, hidden vulnerability, and comedic timing with surgical precision. It was a brilliant casting choice that breathes fresh air into the group dynamic. Even if he is quite annoying, you cannot help but fall in love with him by the season’s end.
That said, beneath the humor and the grand spectacle of adventure, this is an intensely emotional season. It is, perhaps, the darkest the show has ever been. The elephant in the room is the ticking clock hanging over Vax. The knowledge that his time is likely short casts a somber, grey shadow over every interaction. Watching Keyleth, Vex, and even the often-stoic Percy navigate the grief of a loss that hasn’t even fully happened yet is gut-wrenching. Just the thought of it brought me to tears more than once.
While the Vax arc provides the emotional weight, the narrative heart of Season 4 belongs to Pike and Grog. Their relationship has always been the purest element of the show, and seeing their journey take center stage was a beautiful choice. Their bond serves as an anchor while the rest of the world seems to be falling into shadow. These performances are on a whole new level this season. Everyone is brilliant, but Ashley Johnson and Travis Willingham can drive a dagger through your heart quite easily – especially in the final set of episodes.
If you know me, you know I am a villain girl, and the villains this season do not disappoint. They are truly terrifying. The Whispered One brings a level of horror to the series that we haven’t seen before. The plot line is masterfully paced, littered with shocking revelations and devastating setbacks that make the Chroma Conclave look like a warm-up act. The stakes feel deeply personal this time around, threatening the very souls of our heroes.
By the time the final episodes rolled around, I was an emotional wreck. I cheered, I laughed, and I shed more tears than I’d care to admit. The ending left me absolutely shook – a cliffhanger so daring that it feels almost cruel to make us wait for the fifth and final season.
The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 is a phenomenal achievement in animation, balancing high-octane action with profound character studies. It’s the beginning of the end, and while I’m heartbroken to see it starting to close, I couldn’t have asked for a better ride.
