My Home Garden

When I went out to water our garden this morning I could not believe my eyes! Our veggies are growing so well! They look amazing and I cannot wait to eat them all up! We have had lettuce (green leaf & romaine) from our garden already this year but it looks like the rest is coming along great!
I cannot wait for these to grow grow grow so I can harvest and start canning! I plan to make my own sweet relish from the cucumbers, pepper jelly from the bell peppers, and of course sauces from the tomatoes! Check out these awesome photos I took!

Easy DIY Flower Necklace Craft for Kids

0
This super easy DIY flower necklace will provide hours of summer fun for your kids! A great way to celebrate nature and the outdoors.
clover flower necklaces
Summer is finally here! I love spending this season outside with my girls. This past weekend we got a pool (just the small blowup kind) so we have been playing in that a lot. A couple weeks ago we went to a war reenactment. They had a small tent set up with children’s toys from the early 1800’s. That was really interesting and fun!
The women who was running the tent taught me how to make clover flower necklaces, which has quickly become something my girls love to do. We have lots growing in our yard and so I decided to make some today. They are really easy to do and your kids will love them!

DIY Flower Necklace Directions

Step One

First, pick 7-10 clovers. The amount that you pick depends on how long you want the necklace to be. It also depends on how long the clover stems are. If you want to make a bracelet, just pick a few less.

Step Two

Then you tie the stems together. Push one knot up to the “head” of the clover. Continue to do this and then tie the last ones together – making a circle and there ya go! I hope the pictures help explain a little better!
This is something that my daughters and I do every summer. I wrote this post four years ago and we still make them every summer. They are so much fun to do. It has kind of become a summer tradition for us. Something that I hope my daughters continue to do with their kids when they have them. After we are done with our necklaces, we don’t let the clovers go to waste. We feed them to our adorable pet bunny Riley, named after Inside Out.

Red, White, & Blue Deviled Eggs | #Recipe

Happy 4th of July everyone! This holiday I will be spending time with family at a backyard BBQ & campout! This will span the whole long weekend! I am so excited! For dinners we all bring a dish to pass. My husband I could not decide what to bring – all the common things were taken (pasta salad, tossed salad, fruit salad). As you probably know, we raise chickens and thought – hmmm why not deviled eggs! I then remembered that my cousin made pastel colored deviled eggs for Easter and thought I could do that with Red & Blue dye for festive Independence Day eggs! Here is how that turned out:

red white and blue deviled eggs

Directions:

  1. Egg Dye: 1 tsp vinegar, 20 drops each food coloring, 1/2 cup hot tap water
  2. Hard boil or oven bake* eggs, peel them and cut them in half.
  3. Dip them until you get the color you want.
  4. To drain the dye, place them hole side down for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Pat dry with paper towel.
  6. Fill with your favorite Deviled Egg recipe!
  7. Sprinkle paprika on top!

Robot Turtles Board Game Review

Robot Turtles Review

IMAG5854

I am lucky enough that ThinkFun chose me to receive this game for free in order to review it! I was so excited when I found out because my 3 year old is really in to board games now. She would rather sit at the table and play games all day than spend time outside, or even watch TV! I am not exaggerating when I say we play board games for at least 3 solid hours every day in our house. We only own three games that are age appropriate for her so it has been the same thing over…and over…and over….this mama was very excited to be getting a new game to switch things up! And Robot Turtles did not disappoint!

RobtoTurtles2

Let me start off with a quick description of this game. This game sneakily teaches children about coding and they have no idea because they are too busy having fun! Each child is a Turtle Master and the adult(s) are the Turtle Movers. They have cards to move their turtle forward and turn him to each side. The color on these cards corresponds to the color of the flowers on the sides of the turtles’ playing pieces. The child plays their cards and you move the turtles for them (don’t forget to make funny sounds as you do!). The objective is for them to get their turtles to the matching jewel. They can even take back their move if it is still their turn by touching their bug and yelling “bug!” Once the child gets the hang of the game you can introduce different obstacles and abilities like snow castles and lasers! And the best part? EVERYONE WINS! Any turtle that gets to their jewel is a winning turtle!

IMAG5845

Let’s talk about the packaging and pieces for just a minute. Everything came very well packaged. The pieces are very sturdy and high quality. The turtles, jewels, bugs, and obstacles are a thicker cardboard and should stand up to my girls rough playing! The pieces do need to be popped out when you first play the game but that takes less than a minute and they come out really easily! I did not have to struggle at all to get them out – I have had issues with other games in the past.

IMAG5852     IMAG5851

We played this game 7 or 8 times yesterday and had a blast! Each game was a different experience. We placed the jewels in different squares each time so my daughters would have to figure out a different path. We even let my 3 year play a couple times after her younger sister went to bed. We still helped her by moving the turtle, but she did not have an “opponent” and that is fine too! I am pretty sure my daughter started playing cards she did not want to use just so she could yell “BUG!” at the top of her lungs! My husband, who is an electrical engineer, was really impressed with the game and what it does. He believes that coding is very important in this day and age and loves that our girls are going to learn it at such a young age.

IMAG5842 BURST014                    IMAG5841 BURST013

Overall, I highly recommend this game. It is great for little ones AND parents. We had so much fun laughing and making silly noises – it did not seem like learning at all! With all the different obstacles and abilities you can introduce I know that this game will stick with us through many years. Each time you play, the game is truly a whole new experience! I absolutely LOVE that everyone wins. This is a huge issue in our house and if my 3 year old loses a game – a fit usually follows. The game says ages 4 and up but my 3 year old did fine. It also states two players but honestly, we had a blast with just one (not counting the adults)! One thing to remember – making the silly noises when moving the turtles for your children is the most important part (and the most fun part!) I am very excited to bring this to the next family get together so my girls and their cousins can play it together!

Green Tea Powder by Kiss Me Organics Review

Green Tea Powder by Kiss Me Organics Review

green+tea

First let me state that I was over the moon when I was chosen to do this review! I have heard such amazing things about green tea powder – natural energy boost and what it can do for your health.  I feel that I drink too much coffee so I have really wanted to see if this will give me that energy that I need to get through a day home with two crazy little girls – and it did!
For one week, after my morning workout, I added about a teaspoon of this green tea powder to my smoothie (strawberries, banana, and vanilla Greek yogurt) and I honestly felt a difference. My smoothies did not seem to taste any different and I did not need that afternoon coffee that I usually reach for. Obviously, I cannot say for sure that it was the green tea powder, but what else could it be?
I love that this is organic. As I am going down the weight loss/maintenance road I am really looking for healthier options. I have started growing my own veggies and fruits and am raising chickens for eggs and meat. You can use the powder while baking as well! I really want to try it in some muffins the next time I make them. Another popular use is in lattes.
Per Kiss Me Organics, this green tea powder provides:
  1. ALL DAY ENERGY & FOCUS: Lift your vitality and concentration with the slow release natural energy from Organic Matcha
  2. CALORIE BURNING BOOSTER: Support your weight loss goals with an all-natural way to increase your body’s metabolism
  3. LATTES | SMOOTHIES | BAKING: Kiss Me Organics Matcha Green Tea Powder arrives in an easy-to-use airtight health grade packaging allowing for as much or as little use as you need for any occasion. Enjoy a relaxing latte in the morning, bake a dozen cupcakes or simply add a small boost to your morning smoothie
  4. 137x ANTIOXIDANTS OF BREWED GREEN TEA: USDA Organic Matcha Green Tea can only be used in a powdered form because, unlike brewed green tea, it contains the entire tea leaf which dramatically increases the nutritional content.
You can find this on Amazon here for $25.00 which does include a 50 page recipe book that is emailed to you! I can honestly say I am not sure I would pay that much but it does seem to really work! And with the addition of the recipe book, it seems worth it. I feel healthier and more energetic after one week of using it.

A Tangled Birthday Party

 Tangled Birthday Cake
My oldest daughter just turned 3 – THREE!! (Where does the time go?!?) Her favorite things right now are Tangled and Frozen. She watches them over and over. She even pointed out Rapunzel in Frozen at Elsa’s Coronation before I noticed her. To say she is obsessed is an understatement. So when I asked her what theme she wanted for her birthday party I was not one bit surprised when she told me Tangled. Below are some fun party ideas if you want to do a Tangled theme. We had a blast!
If you want to celebrate a birthday in a big way, consider a Birthday Yard Card in Winter Garden, FL from Celebration Yard Cards

Membership Appreciation Night at Rosamond Gifford Zoo

Membership Appreciation Night at the Zoo

IMG 0320

Rosamond Gifford Zoo is our local zoo in Syracuse, New York.  We planned to become members but recently they launched an amazing military program. Veterans, of which my husband is one, and their families can get in FREE when they visit the zoo. Since this means we would not need to be members, we decided to use the money to “adopt an animal.” This means you get your name on the wall, a fact sheet, and a stuffed animal of your adopted animal. My daughters chose the Red Panda. Because we adopted an animal, we were also invited to the Membership Appreciation Night on June 11th, 2014.
What a fun night! When we signed in they gave each of us a ticket for a free drink, popcorn, and ice cream! The restaurant was open which was good since it was 5:30pm and we had two hungry little girls. We grabbed some chicken fingers, burger, and fries to share and the food did not disappoint. It is always good there. There was also a raffle, which we threw $20 in to but didn’t win anything. No big deal at all as it went right to the animals and we are fine with that! (The behind the scenes experience would have been amazing to win though!)

They had a penguin feeding at 6:00pm so we headed over there with our popcorn. The girls loved it! They got right up against the glass and enjoyed seeing them catch the fish. We had seen the penguins there before of course, but never during feeding. Next stop was the barn area. This is my husband’s favorite part because they have alpacas. We got to pet them and then my daughter got to learn how to milk a cow. That is one of her favorite exhibits and she is getting really good at it! At 6:30pm there was an elephant talk so we headed over to that section. My oldest really loved the elephant and kept telling me she wanted to ride on her. What a surprise when after the show they brought the elephant around and let everyone touch her. My older daughter said “She felt hard mommy!” My youngest squealed with excitement when she got to touch the elephant!

IMG 0336
IMG 0358        IMG 0375

We decided to use the time before the raffle winners were announced to check out the inside of the zoo. It was getting dark and windy since a storm seemed to be coming. We saw the lions, lemurs, monkeys, and the fossa which are some of my oldest daughters favorites. She then asked to go see the fish. After seeing all the fish we waited for them to announce the raffle winners. Once we knew we did not win we headed outside for the juggling and bubble show! We were all exhausted since it had been a long day and was now 7:30pm so we only stayed for about 15 minutes of the show and decided to head out. It was a lot of fun!

My Home Water Birth Experience & Why I Would Do It Again

14
home water birth story

First let me start with the obvious here – why I chose to home birth. I hospital birthed my first child and it was not a “bad” experience. It was, however, not totally what I wanted. I wanted to be able birth naturally but because I was “not progressing fast enough” I was given the option of pitocin or epidural. I went with an epidural because I knew that pitocin would most likely just lead to an epidural anyways.

IMG 4676

I very much wanted to avoid that this time and let my body do what it was meant to do. I also liked the idea of being in the comfort of my own home. I would be able to sleep in my home with my baby that first night rather than stuck in a hospital room, most likely without my husband as he would be tending to our eldest child. Speaking of our oldest daughter, I wanted her to be there. I wanted her to experience it, to meet her sibling and start the bonding process immediately.

I very much trusted our midwife and I knew that I would be sent to the hospital if there was an issue. The hospital was only about a 5 minute drive so I was quite comfortable with that. So, that is what swayed me in the decision to birth at home. I very much wanted a water birth!

We were also team green (did not find out the gender of the baby prior to birth) for both our kids. I would highly recommend that, nothing like it! Home birthing is certainly not for everyone…but if you are thinking about it, I say go for it!

My Home Water Birth Story

The night before I went into labor I was really antsy. I just felt that labor was coming and tried to get as much rest as possible. I woke up several times in the night having to pee and with mild cramping/contractions.

Around 5:00am I woke up to pee again and had several hard(er) contractions within 15 mins. I woke up my husband and told him I did not think he would be going to work that day. He laughed but then asked if I was serious when he saw my face. I told him I was going to go try to eat something so I would have strength as I labored. I went downstairs to let him rest and ate a Luna protein bar.

We were not timing contractions yet but I was counting and had about 15 in the first hour. By 7:00am they had gotten stronger and I just knew this was it. We paged the midwife just to let her know what was going on but also that we could go unassisted for some time still as it didn’t seem like it was going to be a quick labor. She said she would call around 9:00am and check in. I tried to do some things to distract me like play video games and mess around on Facebook but contractions were coming every 3-4 minutes and getting harder so I decided to just walk around the house.

My husband started to fill up the birthing tub and it was ready around 9:00am just in time for Priscilla (midwife on call) to call back. My husband let her know that I was going to get in the tub soon to help with the pain but that we probably still had time as contractions were increasing but were not “there” yet. We called my doula to update her and she came over right away to help with our oldest daughter.

I got in the tub around 10:00am and the hot water felt AMAZING. There is no other way to describe it. I had an idea it would slow labor down but it was so worth it. It really made everything much more tolerable. Priscilla came around 11:00am. Every time I got out of the water to pee I would try to lay on the couch or squat and have a few contractions that way.

They were MUCH harder out of the water than in the water due to gravity but that moved the labor along quicker. As much as I wanted to stay out for labor’s sake, I was rarely out of the water longer than 15 mins. I asked my husband to get in the water with me to rub my back and he did. As I contracted, he would push in on my hips to counteract the pain and it really helped (a tip from my doula!).

IMG 4653

Around 2:30pm I was starting to feel discouraged. I was in a lot of pain and honestly was rethinking why I was at home instead of at the hospital with an epidural feeling nothing. Looking at my oldest and holding her hand really helped a lot as I knew she would be unable to be with me at the hospital. I asked my midwife to please check me so I could see how far dilated I was.

I knew I needed that encouragement. I got out of the water, went to the bathroom, and then she checked me. She told me that baby’s head was very low and that I was around 7cm dilated. She suggested sitting backwards on the toilet and letting gravity help during contractions. WOW! That sucked! It was the worst pain I have ever felt.

Even when I was not contracting the pressure was incredible. I told my husband I needed to get back in the water after 4 of those contractions so he helped me back to the tub. This was around 3:15pm.

At this point contractions were coming harder and faster but in my head, I was thinking I just cannot do this another 12 hours (thinking about my labor with my oldest which was 24 hours). I finally voiced my opinion and said “I don’t think I can do this” and almost started to cry.

I should mention that I had been getting very verbal during contractions since getting back in the tub but honestly was not thinking the baby was that close to coming. My midwife and husband said “You are doing it!” The next contraction I had this urge to push. There is no other way to describe it except that I HAD to push. So I pushed and oh my, the ring of fire…that was horrible! I screamed “it burns!” as I was pushing and both my husband and Priscilla said “that’s good!!”.

My older daughter started crying because I was screaming so loud so my doula took her outside. Only 3-4 more pushes and I felt baby’s head pop out. I reached down and it was absolutely the most incredible thing I ever felt. I leaned back (I was hanging over my husband in the tub before this) and pushed once more (a total of 9 minutes pushing) and out popped baby!

We pulled her up and put her on my chest. My husband looked and said “It’s Lorie!” and started bawling. I was so exhausted but also so happy. I was on cloud 9.

Lorie%2Bbirth

In the end I got the labor and birth I wanted. Man was it tough but I would never change a thing. To be in the comfort of my own home was amazing. To be able to cuddle my new baby with my older daughter and to birth with no interventions at all was so empowering.

I am woman, hear me roar!

LeapPad Ultra Review

I was lucky enough to win a LeapPad Ultra through another blog last September. We held on to it and gave it to our (then) 2.5 year old for Christmas. This is such a great product. There are lots of games available that star her favorite characters. The free game that came with it, Scaredy Cat, is one of my daughter’s favorite apps! She also loves to take photos of all of us and blend them together. She even made one where her sister’s face was on her puppy, Violet’s, head! I know a lot of people seem to think the games are too expensive but you can always find a coupon code. I think they are well worth it. My daughter gets hours and hours of play out of each game. You can also find games that are $8 – $10 that are great – the “Get Ready for Kindergarten” series is a hit with her! She is just about to turn 3 and she plays many games that are rated for 5-7 years old so keep that in mind when ordering. The touch screen always works great, the camera is good considering it is a tablet for toddlers, and the app variety is unmatched!
1536556 10100326975580526 1189856377 n    10264743 10100374333779316 194220822261015414 n
As far as negatives go there is ONE thing I wish I could do. I wish I could add videos on to it. Then I could add our digital version of Frozen on there and make my daughter the happiest little girl in the world. It is also annoying that if she decides to change her “name” display to random letters and numbers, there is no way to change it back to her name. It says “That name was already used.” So the display name has been every possible version of her name and now it is just whatever she feels like typing in.
Unfortunately the screen recently cracked. Bad. I was freaking out since she has had this not even a year and she uses it every.single.day. She loves to play it in bed while settling down for the night. It happened on a Saturday night and I emailed LeapFrog right away with a photo of the LeapPad. I was honestly expecting them to do nothing because I had won and not purchased this product. I received an email Monday asking me to send the serial number and a photo with a number sequence written across the screen in permanent marker. Then on Wednesday, they sent me a coupon code for 50% off a LeapPad Ultra! The site was offering free shipping as well so we got a brand new LeapPad Ultra for just $81.00 after tax. My daughter’s birthday is June 24th and the LeapPad should be here next week – just in time! I am so excited as I know my daughter will be thrilled! She still tries to play her LeapPad Ultra – cracked screen and sharpie numbers written across it and all! Silly girl!

I just had to give credit where credit is due. Thank you LeapFrog! I will continue to be a loyal customer and am very excited for the upcoming LeapBand – I plan to get each of my girls one for Christmas this year!
I was under no responsibility to blog about this product and I am receiving no compensation for it. All opinions expressed are my own.
