The 10 Most Disappointing Movies Of 2022
2022 was filled with good and bad movies but here are the 10 movies that disappointed us most. This list is based on how good or bad the movie was in comparison to the people working on/in the films, anticipation, etc.
10. Tar
Though Cate Blanchett delivers one of the best performances of the year, Tar was a struggle to get through. There was only so much a great performance could do for this dragged out story. The social commentary was very well executed along with a great score that helped the story flow, but again with such a hefty runtime and a very basic premise, Tar needed much more than a perfect lead performance to make it great.

9. Brahmastra Part One: Shiva
This film in itself is very interesting but the main reason it makes this list is because of the internal storylines. Being the first Bollywood movie made to set up a whole universe it did a pretty good job. On the other hand it did start to fall off heavily in the final act.
As a whole the world was built up perfectly, with some great effects, and an interesting main character – but the final act was a pain to get through. Without spoiling anything major there is a bit of a team build up going into the 3rd act but it pushes everything we love from the first 2 acts aside.
It is pretty low on the list because the marketing wasn’t misleading or anything like that but the watching experience slowly became more and more of a chore.

8. Crimes of the Future
Granted I may be in the minority here, Crimes of the Future is abysmal. The performances are cool, the effects are nice, the direction is unique… but nothing else. The concept is actually really intriguing and Cronenberg gives a nice effort to give something new and unique, but it ends up falling flat in all areas. I was most anticipating this movie because of the performances, Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux and Kristen Stewart, a recipe for success… but it all falls apart under an overly-ambitious and unnecessary story direction.

7. Amsterdam
It is pretty simple why this movie is somewhere on the list. Just to name a few: Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Robert De Niro, Anya-Taylor Joy, Rami Malek and many many more AMAZING actors, all wasted in the movie. Aside from Christian Bale, not a single performance is memorable, the story is abysmal and not a single story point is interesting. A mis-fire from beginning to end.

6. MEN
MEN is a weird one for this list because it is similar to Brahmastra in the sense that the pre-watch hype wasn’t unreasonably high but once it got started it was great. Everything felt weird, there was an uneasy feeling in my stomach, and I was really interested in the story at hand. But… just as Brahmastra, as the third act moves along everything falls apart. The social
messages become blatant and poorly implemented, taking away from some really interesting and detailed character development, but worst of all, they introduce this really bad body horror imagery that made 3 people in my theater just walk out. As someone who loved body horror when done right, this was one of the worst uses of it in a movie this year.
5. The Northman
Having seen 100 new 2022 releases, The Northman is in my top 25 of the year, an 8/10 movie, but it is still the top 5 most disappointing of the year because of a few very key reasons. My expectations were sky high.
With a director like Robert Eggers and a cast with Alexander Skarsgard, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke and many more amazing actors and actresses, I expected this film to be generational, a modern masterpiece… but it was just a great movie. 100% of the blame on this movie being disappointing does go on me, the expectations were just too high, but with a cast and crew this amazing, I expect nothing under amazing.

4. Spiderhead
With a Netflix original you can’t really expect much but with Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller, plus director Joseph Kosinski who made Oblivion, Tron Legacy, and one of the year’s best Top Gun: Maverick… I wanted something great from Spiderhead, but it was just kind of stupid.
With a Black Mirror-esque story, the movie seemed to be on track to create a really interesting mystery with a mind-blowing twist and resolution but it was predictable and underwhelming.
3. Three Thousand Years of Longing
This was director George Miller’s first movie since Mad Max: Fury Road, one of the greatest action movies of all time, so the bar is high for a director like him, but he absolutely missed this one. With leads like Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba my anticipation was high for this movie but the movie is a snooze-fest.
Elba does give a good performance but he can’t do enough to save the film. The final act shifts away from all of the fantastical elements and that is where the movie is at its best, but again not enough to make up for a 1 hour and 48 minute movie that feels like 3 hours.

2. Jurassic World Dominion
Maybe it is because I am a die-hard defender of Jurassic World and someone who doesn’t hate Fallen Kingdom, I was really excited for this movie. The first 2 in the trilogy built a great story with characters that have had interesting arcs but Dominion felt like they took the worst parts of both World movies and brought in the old cast. The movie isn’t even focused on the dinosaurs anymore it is about these world ending bugs… BUGS.
This movie is frustrating because of the missed potential but there is a number 1 for a reason.

1. Thor: Love and Thunder
The definition of missed potential. Thor has had his ups and downs in the MCU but after Thor: Ragnarok it didn’t seem like they could ruin this now reborn and in Infinity War, near perfect character… but Love and Thunder does just that. It isn’t just Thor himself but the entire movie is a joke. You have potentially dark storylines about death and loss with a villian who is deadset on
murdering all gods – but with what seemed like an SNL room of writers, an aimless director in Taika Waititi and quite possibly the biggest waste of an actor in the MCU with Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, who only once actually kills a god… you get the most disappointing movie of the year, Thor: Love and Thunder.
