Puppy Love is an adorable romantic comedy that, while predictable, is still a whole lot of fun. Grant Gustin and Lucy Hale are great together.

If you love cheesy but cute romantic comedies, and dogs, then I have the movie for you. Puppy Love follows Nicole (Lucy Hale) and Max (Grant Gustin) who are forced to spend much more time together than they wanted to after their dogs fall in love and end up pregnant during a disasterous first date.
Nicole, who owns the puppy daddy, decides to do the right thing and step up for the sake of the puppies. It takes a while, but the two eventually warm up to one another. Crazy antics ensue, especially when someone from Nicole’s life visits Max’s house. The movie is very predictable, but still a fun watch.

Predictable But Charming
Romantic Comedies do not work unless their lead actors have good chemistry and thankfully that is true for Puppy Love. Gustin and Hale are believable during all stages of their relationship, but are especially adorable together during the end of the third act.
Their canine co-stars help bring the charm to the film, as it is impossible not to fall in love with them. They hit their marks and seem to do everything they needed to right on cue, so they must have been trained well. It is when all four leads are together though, that this movie shines the brightest.

Cheesy Humor, But Is That A Bad Thing?
If you love a cheesy RomCom, boy oh boy is this a movie for you. There is quite a bit of humor weaved in, and the majority of it leans into the silly and cheesy side of things. The veterinarian (played by Michael Hitchcock) is over the top and ridiculous, but that works perfectly in the scenes he is in — especially as he is there to cut the tension between Nicole and Max.
There is not a lot of laugh out loud humor, but rather eye rolling humor that works because it is surrounded by the cute story of Nicole and Max, and their dogs. It is really hard not to root for animals, and these ones are extra adorable.

Overall Thoughts
Puppy Love might not be quite as adorable as the furry leads, but it is cute and charming. As with most romantic comedies, it is extremely predictable. But just because you can guess these two end up from the beginning, it doesn’t mean their journey isn’t entertaining.
This is the perfect movie to curl up on the couch with your pet and watch on the weekend when you want to relax. You will chuckle, be charmed by the dogs, and enjoy a cute love story. It is lighthearted and fun, breezing over any heavy topics. Weaving the pandemic into the story makes sense, especially considering when this was filmed, and only makes Max a bit more relatable to the audience.
Grant Gustin and Lucy Hale have good chemistry and work well together on screen, making it easy to root for them to finally get together. Plus, there are silly antics and cute puppies, what more could you ask for?
