Will there be a The Creator 2? Co-Writer / Director Gareth Edwards weighs in on if there will be a sequel to The Creator.
The Creator gives Science Fiction fans an intriguing and beautiful new world to fall in love with. The story is emotional and while it has an ending, there could certainly be more stories to come from this world. We asked co-writer / director Gareth Edwards if he has plans to revisit this world and deliver a sequel to The Creator.
So, will there be a The Creator 2? Here’s what Gareth Edwards had to say about it.
Note: This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The Creator would not exist without the labor of the writers and actors in both unions.
Will There Be A The Creator 2?
Gareth Edwards starts to respond by revealing that whenever he has a little bit of free time and is able to sit and watch something, he prefers to watch films versus television shows, unlike his girlfriend. He equates this to liking endings.
“My favorite part of a story is how it ends. And it’s, like, this mic drop moment. It’s like the best part of a joke is the punchline. And so, when I’m trying to figure out a story, I’m always working backwards from the end to try and get it to be this climax as much as possible.”
Gareth Edwards says that he feels that everything that happens throughout the entire film, leads to that moment. It all leads to the ending. So, for now at least, he feels that The Creator is a self-contained film. Meaning no The Creator 2 is on the horizons.
“As much as I love the world that it all exists in and, it was amazing to design and build everything and shoot it all over in these beautiful countries. But it’d be a high-class problem to have the studio come up and tap you on the shoulder and say, ‘Hey, Gareth, you gotta think of something. You know, we need a sequel,’ or something. But that’s not on my agenda. I’m not really interested in doing that. It’s a one-off movie.”
He then jokes that if the time does come that the studio asks him to make it a trilogy, he might not exactly remember saying it was a one off film. He just might say it was always meant to be a trilogy.
Either way, one thing is for sure, The Creator is a visually stunning epic, with an intriguing and exciting world. So whether we only get to visit in this one time, or again in The Creator 2, we are just thankful to have it.
Be sure to see the world of The Creator when the film comes to theaters on September 29th. You don’t want to miss it.
