My Dad The Bounty Hunter is a fun science fiction animated series that is something parents and children can enjoy together.

There are far too many animated shows for families that entertain the children and leave the adults browsing on their phones — that is not My Dad The Bounty Hunter. For science fiction fans especially, this show is going to be one that families look forward to watching together. Clearly taking inspiration from franchises such as Star Wars and Back To The Future there are numerous Easter Eggs and references sprinkled throughout that will have viewers squealing with glee. The best part of it? It’s done REALLY well.

My Dad The Bounty Hunter doesn’t just try to copy these popular fandoms, they do their own thing while incorporating little nods to their inspirations. The story here is a interesting right from the start, but as the series goes on, it becomes a tale of a family that, while it takes place in space, will feel relatable to the majority of people that are watching it.

A Unique Twist On Relatable Plot

They are going through a rough patch, as all families do. The father works too much and is separated from the mother. He is trying to find that work-life balance so he can find time with his kids — and the oldest, his daughter, is starting to resent him for it but the son has rose colored glasses. However, money problems have him taking whatever high paying jobs he can so that he can provide for his family. The kids see it as leaving them behind, yet again, and he sees it as doing his best for them.

While this might seem like a bit of a cliché plot, the way it is written, and performed, makes it feel unique. For starters, it takes place in space which introduces a lot to fun and bizarre looking characters. There are some really great aliens with interesting looks that pop up throughout the series. The plot points shift and there are a few twists and turns that keep viewers on their toes. It is always fun when you can’t guess what is going to happen next, and My Dad The Bounty Hunter does that.

The storytelling elevates this show to a whole new level. Everything that feels overused and overdone, is twisted and shaped into something new and unique. There is a whole lot of heart here. My Dad The Bounty Hunter is one of those series that families will look forward to sitting down and watching together as it takes them on a fun and relatable journey through space.

Kicks Off Brilliantly

The premiere episode of this new series is double length, which was a brilliant move on the creators’ parts. It allows viewers to get to know the family, and absolutely fall in love with them. It spends just enough time setting up the overall story, without leaving you feeling like you are waiting for things to start happening. Characters that you know have secrets are introduced, and by the end of the episode you will be all in on this hilarious and entertaining family.

Priah Ferguson voices Lisa, a sassy teenage girl who sees right through her father. She has a bit of a grudge against him, but she very clearly loves him. This was a great casting choice as Priah brings the attitude. Yup, we can all certainly relate to her as we have been that age.

As for Sean, who is voiced by Jecobi Swain, if you do not fall in love with him right away, you need some happiness in your life. He is sweet and innocent, and when kids his age don’t want to play with him it will absolutely break your heart. He is into nerdy things, and yes, we can all relate to him too.

The story told throughout the season just gets better and better. Vax, the big bounty alien that Terry is sent after, is full of surprises. We don’t want to get too much into her in order to avoid spoilers, but just know that she is a complete badass and a force to be reckoned with. Definitely a woman that young female viewers can look up to.

It goes without saying that My Dad The Bounty Hunter is going to be a show that many young kids, and families, will relate to because of the representation. The tables are finally turning and we are able to see all walks of life on the screen. This family is full of strong Black leads and it is important to note just how incredible that is for viewers.

Overall Thoughts

My Dad The Bounty Hunter is a series that Science Fiction fans will find themselves obsessed with, pretty instantly. The plot just gets better and better the longer the season goes on, and viewers everywhere will be crossing their fingers for another season (or two, or three, or four!). It feels like it sets up for infinite stories to be told as Terry (aka Sabo Brok) navigates bounty hunter life and fatherhood, and as Lisa and Sean go on the ride of a lifetime with their father.

The animation might not be perfect, but considering this is a brand new show and we know they didn’t have a massive budget, it looks pretty incredible. Oh, and be sure to have wings and waffle fries around when you sit down to watch it, because you will certainly be craving them after the first episode.

Sci-Fi fans will flip over this fun, unique, and relatable series. This is a show that families will look forward to watching together as it is entertaining for all ages.
