These Days is a unique series that explores dating and life in these unprecedented times we are living in.
The times we are living in are new to us all. Because of the way of the world right now, many people have had to completely change the way they live their loves. Dating online, working from home, not being able to work at all — the majority of people around the country have made sacrifices. That is what These Days is about, at its core, although I am intrigued by the drama that I know is to come.
In this series we see a woman struggling to connect to other humans. She lives alone, her job as a dancer is one she cannot do at the moment, and she starts online dating. Her first date is a bust — and an absolutely hilarious exchange. Her second seems to be more hopeful. Her date is played by William Jackson Harper, who I adore in The Good Place, so I was excited to see him in this role.
Due to the nature of this series, and the state of the country, These Days boasts a creative way of filming. It is clear that everyone in the cast was filmed separately. The way that they interact is by video chat, which we have all grown accustomed to over this last year. Of course, they make jokes about spotty connections and video chats freezing, which is just perfect because we have all been there.
There is a lot of humor to this series and although I have only seen the first episode at The Sundance Film Festival 2021, I am eager for more. I am interested in these characters and where things are going to go. I already have some predictions as to the drama that might arise. You will likely have the same thoughts when you get to the end of the episode as well.
About These Days
When COVID began, we relied on online interactions within social media and streaming platforms to provide some semblance of community. Days turned into weeks and then into months, but nothing got better—especially for singles like Mae, a thirty-something professional dancer navigating the dating scene in an era that forced personal interactions to go online.
