All About The Trust

If you have watched this documentary than you know Shawn and Grant had to trust each other to accomplish this piece of art. The cameras are following Shawn what seems like every waking minute. When asked about that, this is what they had to say.

The first 3 or 4 times Grant came to hang out he just brought a VHS camera and 90% of the time he wasn’t filming. Grant, I think, you were more interested in finding out what we wanted to do and us having a relationship with each other.– Shawn Mendes

Even subconsciously I was trying to get Shawn comfortable with me and let him know I wasn’t going to have this magnifying glass over his shoulder. I wanted Shawn to start to feel comfortable with me being around often so that he could live his life naturally and that he wasn’t performing, or being a different version of himself when I was present.– Grant Singer

Well, Grant’s through process actually worked because it is very clear that Shawn is comfortable and living his life naturally in this film. I think it is a great way to get a behind the scenes look at Shawn’s life, and get to know him better as a person, not just a performer.

The Shower Scene

Shawn is the one that actually brought up the shower scene from Shawn Mendes: In Wonder. He told us that he has been asked about it numerous times. About how it ended up in the documentary and how he felt about doing it. He explains that the deeper they got into the documentary, the more they wanted to make it vulnerable and raw. Well, they certainly accomplished that!

The thing about the shower scene is [Shawn] wasn’t speaking that day. [He] was on vocal rest. We’re at the hotel and making the documentary and the door was open. By that point we had this trust where you knew you were being filmed and if it wasn’t appropriate for me to be filming, I wasn’t going to be in the room.– Grant Singer

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello

One of the things that is captured in this documentary is Shawn’s personal relationship with Camila. So did they discuss boundaries before and during filming to make sure they were both comfortable? It turns out that Grant and Camila are actually friends, and he has directed a video for her before. So they were already comfortable with each other.

There was no alternate reality where someone else directed this film. It was Grant because it was meant to be and the star aligned for the relationships between him and my family. We didn’t have to talk much about boundaries because we just felt trust.– Shawn Mendes

Any Regrets?

When Shawn was asked if there is anything that he regrets is in the documentary after watching it, he kind of had the best answer ever. “No, nothing at all.”

The truth is if I sat through it, which I did a million times before it came out, and tried to find the version of me that I wanted everybody to see, it would be a horrible film. I had to really trust Grant and my manager, Andrew, who were working so hard to make a correct portrait of me.– Shawn Mendes

He did joke that when he watches himself say weird things, he thinks maybe that didn’t have to go in there. Well I must say, I enjoyed this documentary from beginning to end and it was a joy to watch Shawn and Grant talk about it.

About Shawn Mendes: In Wonder

In Wonder follows Shawn Mendes’ journey toward self-discovery, after the physical and emotional demands of his rise, and his last world tour, pushed him towards a personal and musical reckoning. The documentary is a heartfelt look at a songwriter and performer wrestling with the pressures of stardom and the emotional tolls of coming-of-age while the world watches.

Largely framed around his rise and recent tour, the film offers unprecedented access to Mendes’ private life both at home, and while traveling across North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia, and features years of footage as he rose from precocious troubadour to global superstar.
