A reboot of Supermarket Sweep is coming to ABC and it is hosted by one of the funniest ladies in the world, Leslie Jones!
One of my all time favorite gameshows is Supermarket Sweep. I used to watch it religiously with my mom and sister. When we would go food shopping we would study prices just in case we were ever on the show. We were totally those people that yell at the screen and tell the contestants which aisle to go to! So when I heard a reboot was coming to ABC I was over the moon with joy! Then when I heard that Leslie Jones was going to be hosting, I just knew it was going be amazing.
Earlier this week I was able to talk with not only Host and Executive Producer Leslie Jones, but also Executive Producer Alycia Rossiter, and Co-Executive Producer Lenny Marcus! I was thrilled to be able to learn all about this reboot. Fans of the classic show are sure to love this reboot — I know I can’t wait!
What Differences Will We See In The Reboot?
Let’s start with the most obvious difference in the Supermarket Sweep reboot from the previous version — contestants can win $100,000 compared to the $5,000 they used to win. That is a HUGE difference and personally, something I am super excited about. I mean, can I play? Leslie added in that there are even chances to win $25,000 and $50,000 sprinkled throughout the show, “It’s definitely upgraded on the money factor.“.
What has me really excited to tune in Sundays though is what Alycia told us about! The contestants get to design their own costumes with the Supermarket Sweep sweatshirts for the big sweep! The fact that they can customize them with the help of the on set wardrobe guy is pretty amazing and unique.
“You get to see their personality when they come out to do the big sweep! Fireman who have suspenders, we got tassels, and we have cheerleading suits… You’re like, they did all of that with a sweatshirt? That is so crazy and insane and fun!” – Leslie Jones
She also mentioned that the last time the show of the star was the game, and this time it is the host! She says that Leslie brings comedy, heart, relatability, and massive energy! Leslie is also a huge fan of the game and has been on board since day one!
Speaking on Leslie, she always wants to make sure the contestants are comfortable on the show before they start recording. She would be sure to spend a few minutes at each podium talking to them and breaking the ice. Looking them in the eyes and letting them know they are safe. WOW!
Something else that is pretty awesome is that all of the food is donated to food banks before they go bad. How incredible is that?
What Is Staying The Same?
I was super excited to hear that there will still be bonuses during the big sweep on the reboot! I love the bonuses in the original show. We were also told that if your team doesn’t grab an inflatable, Leslie will dig into you. Because why would you not just grab one as you run by? WHY?!
“I don’t know if you remember from the old show hey would have to grate the coffee, or whatever they have to do. [Where it differs is that] our host is a little bigger energy than the original host and every episode she has two personal shopping lists and they are bonus items. She will list three things that would be on her grocery list and she had a great joke that goes with her items. So you have a giggle but then your watching people running through the store grabbing the oddest items off the shelves.” – Alycia Rossiter
“We took some of the elements from the old show and then updated it for 2020. We have a little bit of a cast in it to do some comedy and Leslie seamlessly works them in. You’ll see. It’s another extra layer that you guys will enjoy.” – Lenny Marcus
Diversity Is Important
Another thing that I learned during the press event that made me super happy is just how important diversity is to them. They told us that there is a HUGE range of contestants because they wanted to make sure that everyone is represented on their gameshow. Diversity and representation is key and I love that. Leslie told us just how funny (and good!) the drag queen contestants were. I have to admit, I am REALLY looking forward to that episode!
“I want the people who watch TV to win some money. Supermarket Sweep was always that to me. I always felt like whenever I watched that show — Oh, I could win on this show. I want people to know like yeah, you could win! Come on out.” – Leslie Jones
“Everybody can be an expert at the grocery store. You don’t have to have a PhD. You just gotta go to the store.” – Alycia Rossiter
About Supermarket Sweep
Taking “Supermarket Sweep” to primetime has made everything bigger and better while holding true to what made the original show so sensational. A whimsical grocery store was built from the ground up; big-ticket items were stocked on shelves for contestants to place in carts, and the final cash grand prize amount was amplified.
Hosted and executive produced by Emmy Award®-nominated comedienne and actress Leslie Jones, “Supermarket Sweep” is produced by Fremantle. Executive producers also include Alycia Rossiter, Wes Kauble, Jennifer Mullin and Hunter Seidman.
