Keep Your Kids on Track with Monster Points

Monster Points

Let’s face it, kids aren’t always the perfect angels we wish they were. My girls are good kids overall, but they need incentive now and then. They fight like any siblings do and they are both just as stubborn as their mama. When my daughter started Preschool her teacher introduced her to something called DoJo Points. Basically the kids could earn points, or lose points, depending on their behavior. Parents can log in to an app on their phone and see when they gain/lose points and why. This was a great tool for her and her attitude immediately turned around. I wanted to do something like this for her at home, and that is how I came up with what we call, monster points.

Monster Points

This has worked wonders for both of my daughters. You would be surprised what the threat of losing a monster point will do to them. We have three mason jars on our buffet in the dining room. A larger one in the middle that holds a bunch of pom-poms, which we call monster points. Each of the girls have a smaller mason jar next to the larger one which is where they collect their points. They earn points for doing things like finishing their dinner, cleaning their rooms, setting the table, and brushing their teeth. They get points taken away when they do things like argue or not listen to instructions (we usually give them one chance to turn it around before taking away points).

Monster Points

Once they fill up their jar, they earn a reward. We usually go shopping for their rewards before they fill up their jars so that they can physically see their reward – and when they look in the jar they can physically see how many more points they need to earn it. They usually pick items like LEGO sets, Barbies, Nintendo DS Games, and Play Sets – but of course you could set limits on the value of the reward, or even give cash if you prefer. Honestly, I was shocked at how well this worked. They have offered to do extra chores in order to earn more points more times than I can count. Monster points have created a much more peaceful home for us!

Sunday Brunch and a Movie Featuring A United Kingdom

A United Kingdom

I am a sucker for a good chick flick, and that is just what A United Kingdom is. I was excited to have a couple of gal pals over for a Sunday Brunch to watch it with me. I prepared some orange juice (and one of us had a mimosa but I won’t tattle on who it was) and some popcorn. We all really enjoyed the movie and all three of us shed a few tears. It is a touching film about love and overcoming obstacles.

The film is just under two hours long, but honestly, it flew by for me. I just loved the story that it told. And the fact that it is a true story really touched my heart even more. In a world where things are so crazy right now and uncertain, it was refreshing to watch a love story overcome against all odds. You can watch it on digital HD now, and the DVD and Blu-ray will be available in stores on June 6th, and I highly recommend picking it up! Especially if you are a sucker for love stories like I am.

About A United Kingdom

A United Kingdom is the period romance telling the true story of King Seretse Khama of Botswana, who fell in love with a white English woman during the 1940s, putting his country and rule in jeopardy to marry the woman he loved. The couple faced opposition from the British government, members of Seretse’s own family, and from a number of other powerful sources, who treated their love as a thereat to the status quo. A United Kingdom stars David Oyelowo (Selma) and Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl).

Disney Movies Under the Stars

Bambi has always been one of my absolute favorite Disney movies. I watched it many times growing up with my mom and sister – so naturally I was thrilled to be able to do it with my young daughters now. In order to help celebrate the 75th anniversary release of Bambi, we had a movie night under the stars! Now, we have family movie night every weekend, but this one was special. We even cuddled up outside with our pet bunny while watching, and just for the night, his name was Thumper instead of Riley.

My girls immediately fell in love with the characters, how could they not? And my youngest even shed a year or two (I am sure you can guess when). It was really exciting to see how in to the movie they were, and that they loved it just as much as I do. I want to help you throw the ultimate Bambi movie night under the stars too, so here are a few things that we did. I promise it is easier than you might think – and the whole family will love it!

The Decorations

Since this movie was already under the stars and in our backyard, there really wasn’t much we needed to do to transport ourselves in to the world of Bambi and the forest. We made sure to set up the sitting area by our garden in our yard so we were near some flowers and trees. My daughters loved pretending to be Thumper, Flower, and Bambi as they sat by the bushes! We have a pet bunny and we even brought him over to hang out with us during the film. It was just like we were in the movie!

The Food

For snacks, you of course have to serve some of Bambi and his friend’s favorites! And what do deers and bunnies love more than anything? Vegetables! We had carrots, celery, and peppers with a yummy ranch dip. We also served some trail mix which was made of pretzel rods, dried cranberries, and goldfish. For dessert, we had cookies that the girls decorated themselves, adding pretzel rods as antlers!

The Outdoor Movie Night Set Up

Here is what you need in order to create the set-up that we had:

disney movies anywhere bambi

Once you have these, it is really easy to set everything up. Simply connect your phone to the speaker and projector using the adapter and the HDMI cable. Be sure the projector is lined up with your projector screen, sheet, or side of the house evenly. This way the movie will be straight and easier to watch, instead of an an angle. Then use Disney Movies Anywhere to pull up the movie you want to watch, in this case Bambi, and hit play! Then all that is left to do is relax and enjoy the movie with your family! We plan to go camping a lot this summer, and have decided we will always bring our movie night set up with us!

bambi movie night

Rain Plan

If it ends up raining or something else happens where you can’t set it up inside, the same set up can be used indoors!  If you have a newer laptop or computer, chances are you can skip right over the hooking it up to your phone and project it from that with the HDMI cable. When we did this we also changed in to our PJs to make ourselves more comfortable! We pulled out some big bean bag chairs and all cuddled up to enjoy Bambi!

RUNAWAYS #1
Written by RAINBOW ROWELL

On Sale September 2017

As you probably know by now, I am a huge comic book geek – especially when it comes to Marvel Comics. I just can’t get enough. In fact, I was in my local shop today talking about adding some titles to my pull list, and my husband joked that I like anything Marvel. Well, I just called and asked my shop to add RUNAWAYS to my pull list, which starts this coming September. The 2003 series was one of my favorites, so I am really excited to see what this run brings!

About The RUNAWAYS

They were just a normal group of teenagers, linked only by their wealthy parents’ annual business meeting…until a chance discovery revealed the shocking truth: their parents were secretly Super Villains! This discovery led these kids to run away and put them at odds with the people who raised them! Their parents are gone and the team is scattered across the Marvel Universe. This September, get ready to run again with Marvel’s favorite teen Super Heroes, Nico, Chase, Karolina, and Molly for an all-new comic book series, RUNAWAYS by award-winning author, Rainbow Rowell (Eleanor & Park, Carry On) and Kris Anka (All-New X-Men, Star-Lord).

Marvel Runaways Old Lace

From the Writer

The Runaways are down on their luck at the beginning of this story,” said series writer Rainbow Rowell. “I mean, a fair number of them are missing or dead… And the ones who are still standing feel lost. After their parents died in the original series, all they had was each other. What do they have now? Who are they on their own? This story brings the gang back together, but – in true RUNAWAYS fashion – probably not the way you’d expect.

This new series kicks off when one original member does something drastic. “Chase makes a huge mistake – and then immediately drags Nico into his mess,” continued Rowell. “This whole arc explores what it actually means to be a Runaway. Are they a team? Are they a family? Do they have any reason to get back together?”

Molly Nico Marvel Runaways

Meet The RUNAWAYS

This fall, super powered teens Nico, Chase, Karolina, Molly, and, of course, Old Lace, once again pair up for an all-new journey. If they were able to outrun their past adversaries and misadventures, has that prepared them for what’s to come or will they need to rely on each other even more than before? Prepare for a new twist on a modern Marvel classic perfect for fans old and new when RUNAWAYS hits comic shops this September!

3 Reasons to Pick Up LEGO Dimensions Today

3 Reasons to Pick Up LEGO Dimensions Today

In case you haven’t picked up on it yet, the Smiths are huge gamers. Even my daughters love video games. One that we have been spending a lot of time playing lately is LEGO Dimensions. I know I am probably late to the party here, but we have been having so much fun with this game! We have pretty busy schedules during the school year and have finally been able to fit in some family game playing time as the year dies down. It is not an exaggeration when I say this game gets played every day.

Play Your Favorite Characters

There are so many different kits you can purchase to play in LEGO Dimensions. These include many of my favorite movies and television series such as Ghostbusters, Adventure Time, Back to the Future, and Lord of the Rings. One of the best parts? You get to build the characters and vehicles before you play them. The instructions are integrated in to the game and put on the screen, making it a different LEGO experience than you might be used to.

There are four different types of add on packs you can buy – Fun Packs, Team Packs, Level Packs, and Story Packs. The Fun Pack contains two figures, the Team Pack contains four figures, the Level Pack contains three figures and unlocks and entire new level, and the Story Pack contains two figures, a large build, and unlocks six levels of gameplay. You will need the Starter Pack to play, which comes with three characters and one vehicle – Gandalf, Batman, Wyldstyle, and the Batmobile – as well as the game, toypad, and gateway. We have already started collecting a lot of these – and they are all fantastic! We will end up with all of them, I can guarantee it!

lego dimensions characters

Be A Completionist

I am a total completionist when it comes to video games. I need to collect everything, earn every badge, and open every level. That is one thing I love about LEGO Dimensions. In each level there are a certain number of bricks to collect – and you can also earn Rule Breaker on each level if you collect enough coins. Every LEGO game is truly a fun one if you are a completionist like me! I will play levels over and over so that I can collect everything and earn Rule Breaker.

Problem Solving

One of my favorite things about this game is the problem solving. In order to collect all of the hidden bricks and secrets, you need to use your brain. Certain characters can use abilities that others cannot. For example, Harry Potter can use spells to unlock secret areas and bricks, but Batman would not be able to do this.

Don’t worry, in order to complete the story mode with no add-on levels, you only need the three characters that come with the Starter Pack – but what is the fun in that? You will be unable to explore all the Adventure Worlds and will be unable to collect everything in the game with just these three.

lego dimensions

I personally love that there are so many add-ons, especially the Story Packs! While LEGO Dimensions may be a bit of an investment, it looks like we will get expansions for quite sometime, making it beyond worth it! Pick up your copy today and you will not be disappointed!

Pick Up Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Live Action Film

beauty and the beast live action

Beauty and the Beast has always been one of my favorite Disney movies – if not my favorite. I grew up watching it over and over. Belle was my favorite princess when I was younger, likely because I could always be found with my nose in a book too. Because of my love for this film, my daughters love it too. We have watched it many times and so naturally we were very excited to hear that Disney was making a Beauty and the Beast Live Action film.

Unfortunately, we never made it to theaters to see it, but that is OK because we were sent an advance home release to check out – and were blown away! I mean, I knew I was going to cry, and I knew I was going to love it, but I had no idea how much. Emma Watson was perfect as Belle – and Dan Stevens totally surprised me. He is phenomenal in Legion but I had no idea he could sing like that! The humor with Josh Gad was fantastic as well. I can not recommend this film enough. True fans will be happy with how it came out.

Poptropica Worlds: A New Mobile Game the Whole Family Will Love

This review was made possible by iConnect and Poptropica Worlds. I was provided compensation to facilitate this post, but all opinions stated are 100% mine.

poptropica worlds in play

One of my favorite things to do to pass the time is gaming. We have just about every video game system out there – even a few tablets that are dedicated to mobile gaming. My daughters are only 4 and 5 but we play a lot of games on there together. They have even started being able to play some games by themselves. One of our new favorites is Poptropica Worlds, and I think all families will love it!

Poptropica is a virtual world in which kids explore and play in complete safety. I have to admit, safety is a big concern of mine when my girls play games, so I was very pleased with this. My girls had a blast creating a Poptropican character to travel the many Islands of Poptropica! Within the game they use gaming literacy to enjoy a narrative that is often rooted in factual history, so the learn while playing and have no clue. They even get to use their problem-solving skills are honed as kids discover and solve mysteries unique to each Island.

ivy playing Poptropica worlds

Home Island

One of our favorite parts of this game is the Home Island. We could create and customize our Poptropican’s home! Here we can show off our adventure accomplishments, receive messages, and discover what is new in Poptropica Worlds! New and exciting islands will be unveiled throughout the year, and we can’t wait to see them all!

Crisis Caverns

In Poptropica Worlds, every child gets to be the hero of their own adventures, which is something my girls LOVED. Kids are empowered to explore a chain of interactive story-based islands where they can travel back in time, battle monsters, solve mysteries and complete quests. To celebrate the launch, Poptropica Worlds has unveiled a new and exciting story island, Crisis Caverns, about a supervolcano that threatened to blow Poptropica sky high! Modeled after the famous supervolcano in Yellowstone National Park in the US, Crisis Caverns is focused on teaching kids about interesting geology concepts.

Our Experience

Almost immediately my girls became obsessed with this game. They spent about 15 minutes each perfecting their characters because, of course, they had to be just right. I can’t blame them though, I do the same thing when I can personalize a character. I was blown away watching them play. It was really impressive how many skills they were using to complete missions and adventures. They were learning things and they had no idea.

The best part about this game is that it is totally free to play! Yup, free! My girls are 4 and 5 (well, almost 6) but very advanced when it comes to gaming. I guess they learned from their mama. Anyways, this was a great game for them and they could figure it out mostly on their own. If your kids are not gaming veterans I would say starting around age 6 would be good. My husband and I enjoy playing it as well, so it really can be played as an adult as well.

The Battles of TolkienThe Battles of Tolkien

The history of J. R. R. Tolkien’s fictional world of Middle-earth is filled with epic battles in an ongoing struggle between good and evil. The Battles of Tolkien recounts many of the greatest conflicts over thousands of years, from the earliest skirmishes of the Valarian Ages to the defining battles in the War of the Ring. Insightful commentary by Tolkien scholar David Day discusses how the people, tactics, and weapons influenced the outcome of each battle, and also how the legends of Middle-earth relate to the real-world mythology on which Tolkien based his famous literary creation. the scariest book everThe Scariest Book Ever

Reader beware! This is THE SCARIEST BOOK EVER! Or so claims its melodramatic ghost narrator. You can go ahead and turn the page, but don’t expect him to come with you. Anything might pop out of that black hole in the middle of the forest. What do you mean it’s just a bunny? Well, it’s probably a bunny with big fangs. Watch out, it’s–picking pumpkins with its friends, you say? Actually, despite the ghost’s scare-mongering, none of the animal characters in the illustrations seem scary at all. Many delights, such as surprises after the page turn, an alarmist narrator, and punch lines to anticipate make this book a scream for both kids and parents.

Officially Licensed T-Shirt Every Month

TeeBlox is a monthly subscription box that will send you an officially licensed T-Shirt in the theme of your choice – and yes, Marvel is one of them. I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to discover which theme I have been subscribing to for the last 6 months of so. I have been beyond happy with my choice.

Over the last several months I have received a wide variety of T-Shirts – Avengers, Captain America, Deadpool, Spider-Man – this list goes on. This is important to me, and I think, others. Just because you subscribe to the Marvel theme does not mean you want the same character on every T-Shirt that you get. And TeeBlox knows this. These shirts are great quality too, which is what makes this box worth it.

TeeBlox Comics Marvel

Two Extras Each Month

On top of an awesome shirt, subscribers also receive “two extras”. This is normally a comic book, and then a sticker, decal, keychain, poster, or pin. I enjoy getting the comic books because some are ones I have never checked out before – and I have even gone out and gotten surrounding issues to complete a story line. One of my favorite things that I received was a Spider-Man keychain! He has been on my key ring ever since he arrived!

The Price

For something like this, I would expect about $19.99 a month – or more. Nope! Just $12.99 a month. Yup, that’s it! That is less than I spend on my morning coffee in a month.

Variety

If Marvel isn’t your thing, what is wrong with you? No, but seriously, there are plenty of other themes to choose from:  DC Comics, Cartoons, Movies & TV, Games, Hot Meex (mix), Disney, & Sci-Fi. You can choose from a month to month subscription or save money and go with 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year.
