Radio Silence reveals why Grace is headed straight back into the meat grinder for Ready or Not 2. Plus, the sister story that changed everything.
The last time we saw Grace (Samara Weaving), she was clad in a tattered wedding dress, soaked in blood, and smoking a cigarette on the steps of a burning mansion. It was one of the most iconic final shots in modern horror history – a definitive, cathartic “the end.” Or so we thought.
In Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, the nightmare expands in ways that are as heart-wrenching as they are terrifying. This sequel manages to pull off the impossible: it honors the intensity of the original while introducing a sisterly dynamic that gives the franchise a brand-new emotional heartbeat. It is a rare follow-up that stands firmly on its own two feet, proving that the Le Domas curse was only the beginning for our beloved protagonist.
Mama’s Geeky recently had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with the visionary directing duo behind the chaos, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (collectively known as Radio Silence). We chatted about the creative juice required to return to this world and why they decided to pick up the story literally seconds after the first film’s explosive conclusion.
As a sister myself and a mother of two daughters, I was particularly struck by how they transitioned from a story about in-laws from hell to a complex sister story that redefines Grace’s journey.
Ready Or Not 2: Unlocking The “Sister Story”

Tessa Smith: What was it about this specific story that made you think it was finally time to go back?
Tyler Gillett: “I mean, I feel like it was a… we’d always held a bright candle for Ready or Not. And we started developing the sequel and then life kind of took us into other projects and for the writers as well. But this was always that one that was just sort of scratching in the back of our heads. And I think when we finally unlocked this idea that the sequel should be a sister story, it felt like to us, it gave the movie, the concept, the juice that it needed to be not only a great sequel, but a movie that also stands really proudly and really strongly on its own two feet”.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin: “We worked with Kathryn [Newton] on Abigail and had like such a great time making that movie with her. And that’s where we first had the idea that she and Samara [Weaving] should be sisters in something. It was not yet in Ready or Not. And then shortly thereafter, Ready or Not 2 kind of reentered our lives. And we… the first idea we had… was what if Catherine is Samara’s sister in this movie? What does that do to this movie? …That was kind of the thing that like, got us emotionally attached to this idea in a way that makes it its own thing”.
No Time To Rest: The Immediate Sequel
Tessa Smith: It’s so brave that you pick up literally where the other one ended – with that overlap of her walking out. Can you talk about the decision to pick up right at that exact moment?
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin: “It was one of the very early decisions that was made when we were developing the idea… We loved that after everything that Grace has been through, that she doesn’t even get a chance to take a breath. That her life, the game is so important and the outcome of the game is so significant that she’s immediately thrown into the next like, you know, the next meat grinder”.
Tyler Gillett: “On a sort of energy and like attitude level, we just love the idea of Grace, you know, really carrying all of the wounds and all of the exhaustion and all of the catharsis from the first story directly into this one… The movie, I think, tonally really declares itself as what it is in that stitch. Like, you know, right away, like, ‘oh, shit, this movie is going to be doing things that I don’t expect it to do.’ And it’s funny and it’s scary and it’s emotional. And all of that stuff is like, I think, really present in that first like four and a half… minute shot”.
Why You Should Watch Them Back-to-Back

One of the most exciting takeaways from our conversation was the directors’ hope that fans will treat these two films as one continuous, epic survival tale. The seamless transition from the first film’s finale to the second film’s opening creates a unique viewing experience that heightens the stakes for Grace. By the time Kathryn Newton’s character enters the fray, the audience is already breathless, mirroring Grace’s own exhaustion.
The chemistry between Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton is nothing short of electric. By shifting the focus to a central relationship we follow through the entire film, Matt and Tyler have managed to make a sequel that feels more intimate and heartbreaking than the original, without losing any of the signature dark humor or gore that fans crave.
