The Pitt Season 2 Episode 11, “5:00 PM” Review: Mel’s Admission Sets The Stage For Relationship-Driven Storylines.

Warning: This review contains spoilers for The Pitt season 2, episode 11.

Ever since watching the pilot of HBO’s ER procedural, Mel King has been a character I’ve been especially invested in. That interest has only grown as the series has made it clear that Mel is used to handling everything and everyone on her own.

Season 2, Episode 11, “5:00 P.M.,” marks the first time we truly see Taylor Dearden’s character act selfishly, and it’s one of my favorite moments of the series.

Mel is a caregiver through and through, so when her sister reveals that she’s having sex, her immediate reaction is concern. The storyline explores bodily autonomy, reinforcing that being on the spectrum doesn’t take away someone’s ability to make their own decisions about intimacy—something Mel clearly already knows.

All it takes is a short conversation with Langdon for Mel to be reminded that she needs to respect Becca’s choices. But her sister’s admission triggers an underlying fear that’s crucial to understanding Mel’s character: she’s terrified of being alone.

The Pitt is a procedural that has only spanned two shifts, so viewers aren’t always going to get the intricate look into characters’ personal lives that we may want. Mel has always come across as someone who is quietly lonely, even if she refuses to admit how much she craves connection. When she opens up to Dana in the stairwell and reveals she’s scared of being alone, it was a defining moment.

Mel may not show it, but she craves companionship just like anyone else. Whether that takes a romantic or platonic form remains to be seen, but it adds a new layer to her dynamic with Langdon.

He’s consistently shown up for her and proven he has her back both personally and professionally. As much as fans love Kingdon, it’s been a bit unclear why someone Mel’s only worked one shift with has had such a strong impact. Now, seeing how rare that kind of support is for Mel, it all clicks into place.

“5:00 P.M.” is a perfect example of why The Pitt is a bit of a trade-off. Its unique, hour-by-hour format is what makes it so compelling, but it also limits those quieter, off-the-clock moments that help shape a character. Even so, the show does an impressive job of giving us exactly what we need, right when we need it.

New episodes of The Pitt season 2 drop Thursdays on HBO Max.
