The energy at San Diego Comic-Con in 2025 was electric, and one of the brightest sparks was the presence of the iconic director Rob Reiner. Known for a filmography that spans hilarious comedies to heartwarming dramas, Reiner sat down with Mama’s Geeky to discuss one of his most beloved creations and offered a tantalizing glimpse into its highly anticipated sequel.

For fans of rock and comedy, the name Spinal Tap conjures images of comically oversized amplifiers, disastrous tours, and the eternal question of whether their volume knobs truly go to eleven.

Thirty years after the original film cemented its place in cinematic history, the news of a sequel sent waves of excitement.

Rob Reiner, the man who so brilliantly captured the fictional band’s chaotic existence, was on hand at SDCC 2025 to shed light on the genesis of Spinal Tap 2, hinting at the hilarious new misadventures awaiting Derek Smalls, Nigel Tufnel, and David St. Hubbins.

Spinal Tap Returns: Rob Reiner on the Long-Awaited Sequel

Mama’s Geeky: What was it about Spinal Tap that made now the time to bring it back for a second one?

Rob Reiner: Well for years, people said do a sequel, do a sequel. We never wanted to do it. I mean, the thing, you know, it is taking a life of its own. You know, the Library of Congress put it in the National Film Registry said, please don’t touch this thing is fine. But then Harry Shearer, who, you know, plays Derek Smalls, we never had the rights and we never made any money. He sued to get the rights back. Once he got the rights back, we said, well, what do we do with this now that we got this? And we thought, well, maybe we’ll make it. And we said, no, we can’t do it. But we came up with an idea. We sat around, came up with an idea, and it turned into this.

Mama’s Geeky: Well, I can’t wait to see it. The trailer just came out. It looks amazing.

Rob Reiner: Yeah, it’s fun. It’s a lot of laughs. It looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun. It turned out good.

But that wasn’t all! In a surprising and delightful turn, Rob Reiner also reminisced about his experience working with Bruce Willis on the film The Story of Us. He shared a truly unforgettable and humorous anecdote about a snowmobiling trip with the Die Hard star. Watch the full interview with Rob Reiner to hear this crazy Bruce Willis story.
