Brilliant Minds’ Zachary Quinto, Tamberela Perry, and Michael Grassi discuss new NBC series – inspiration, title change & organic sense of inclusion.
Brilliant Minds, which premieres on NBC this September, is inspired by Dr. Oliver Wolf Sacks’ real-life brain disorder research and treatment. Zachary Quinto plays Dr. Oliver Wolf, who is called the North Star of the series by both Quinto and showrunner / Executive Producer Michael Grassi.
The first season will feature a long list of incredible guest stars, including André De Shields, who plays an alzheimer’s patient in the pilot. Steve Howey will portray a member of a biker gang who comes to Wolf for help and treatment in a very emotional episode. Grassi claims this is Howey as we have never seen him before. Mandy Patinkin guest stars for two episodes and is playing a family doctor that shakes up Wolf’s life.
“When doing a show where you are bringing people in each week, I am blown away as to how incredible they are,” Grassi says, crediting the casting director for the series.
Dr. Oliver Wolf Sacks Is Their North Star
When asked about portraying a real life person, Zachary Quinto explains that he has more freedom because Dr. Olive Wolf is inspired by a real person, but not tethered to the period or the behavior of that real person. “Oliver Wolf is in his own world, and foreged in a new territory, to tell new stories. Dr. Oliver Wolf Sacks is our North star.”
Quinto goes on to explain that his character is a complicated person. “I am always drawn to characters that are interesting and complicated, and he certainly is that. He struggles with aspects of how to relate to the world, and there is someting relatable to that. You will see that journey in the conflicts that come up. He is always driven by a sense of passion.”
Dr. Oliver Wolf Sacks’ patients would call him Dr. Sacks, but he rode motorcycles, and his motorcylce friends called him Wolf. In this series, he also rides motorcycles, so a lot of aspects are taken from his real life.
Organic Sense of Inclusion In Brilliant Minds
Dr. Sacks was gay, however he did not come out until much later in life because of the time period in which he grew up. In Brilliant Minds, Dr. Wolf is opening gay. Zacahary Quinto expresses how much of an honor this is for him.
“To play an openly gay character on a prime time show is an honor. Dr. Sacks was deeply influenced by the time in which he came of age and the social restricitions of people being able to live who they were. To play a character embracing that aspect of himself in the modern world is special and I am incredibly grateful to NBC for telling these stories. This series has an organic sense of inclusion, and not just from an LGBTQ+ aspect.”
Tamberla Perry admits that Brillaint Minds has been an amazing opportunity for her. “We are about to start filming episode eleven and as I have gone through this journey developing this character, I am learning we are not as alike as I thought we were. She is loyal and unwavering.”
Ties To Heroes For Zachary Quinto
Many know Zachary Quinto from the NBC series Heroes. He explains how returning to an NBC series feels like a homecoming of sorts, and that there is an even greater tie between the two series.
“Heroes was the job that changed my life and my career,” Quinto confesses, before going on to detail how Heroes focused on a solar eclipse awakening peoples powers. He started on Briliant Minds on April 8th, the day of the solar eclipse, which made him feel more connected to the show.
Quinto also details that Brilliant Minds provides a message of hope, and what brings us together instead of pulls us apart. “I’ve been a part of a lot of darker stories and am grateful that I can be a part of stories that will inspire people and show them that there is a way through it.”
From Dr. Wolf To Brilliant Minds
The original title of Brilliant Minds was Dr. Wolf, but why? Quinto explains that it avoids people thinking it will involve supernatural stuff, like him being a werewolf, espeically with his previous roles. He also reveals that this makes sense because the show really is about the patients and their minds.
Michael Grassi says that the overall theme of his previous series, Degrassi, is that you are not alone. “I carried that to this show. I want viewers to feel like they are not alone, as well. You carry forward stuff that you learn from every show.”
