It is not said enough how incredibly talented Daisy Ridley is. She shines in every single role she takes on, and the same is true of her portrayal as Trudy Ederle in Young Woman and the Sea. This film is inspiring, funnier than you might expect, and unapologetically explores the struggles that women go through in life.

Trudy Ederle is the first woman to successfully swim the English Channel. She was born to immigrant parents in New York City in 1905 and through the support of her older sister and trainers, she overcame adversity and the animosity of a patriarchal society to rise through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team and complete the staggering achievement – a 21-mile trek from France to England.

Trudy was forced to fight for her accomplishments, training day in and day out to get to her level of success. She was torn down, and even drugged, by men who wanted to prove a woman’s place is as a wife, and in the kitchen. She proved that she could do whatever she put her mind to, and she did not need a husband. The real life Trudy never married.

Daisy is not the only stand out in the film, although she is trulyl inspirational in the lead role. Christopher Eccleston might play an awful person, but he does so in a way that will have viewers hating him, even if they love the actor — and that is talent. Tilda Cobham-Hervey portrays Trudy’s sister Margaret. Her chemistry with Daisy is heartwarming and is sure to have anyone who has a sister in their feels.

Young Woman and the Sea is an inspiring sports film in a way, but it is also so much more that. It does not shy away from the way society looked down on Trudy, and does so on many women. The film is empowering thanks to the extraordinary, real life story. Knowing that this is, for the most part, how her life went will make women everywhere feel like they can handle what life has to throw at them, and no matter what blocks their path, they can accomplish their goals.

Young Woman and the Sea tells an incredible story in an inspiring and empowering way. It is also quite funny at times, which is a great way to break up the intense and emotional moments. Daisy Ridley absolutely shines in the lead role, but her supporting cast is incredible as well.
