The Little Mermaid (2023) Social Reactions Are In

Tonight was The Little Mermaid (2023) Hollywood premiere. Those in attendance have been tweeting and sharing their initial reactions to the Disney remake, which has been mostly positive. The original film was just eighty minutes long, while this new version is over two hours long, meaning there was a whole lot of new story included.

The Disney live action remakes tend to be better received when they offer something new for the viewers instead of just rehashing the same film shot-for-shot. This is what press, critics, and fans who attended the premiere had to say about The Little Mermaid (2023).

The Little Mermaid is magical. Halle Bailey is absolutely phenomenal. That girl has some pipes! Scuttle & Sebastian are hilarious & had me laughing the whole way through. Love the new songs & added plot points! Some CGI issues, but they don't take away from it. #TheLittleMermaid pic.twitter.com/PCDRNotK7L

The Little Mermaid was a an absolute magical experience! Halle Bailey gives an incredible performance & Melissa McCarthy will terrify in the best possible way. The music will bring all the nostalgia & make you fall in love with the princess all over again. #TheLittleMermaid pic.twitter.com/iNAISgQbMH

Halle Bailey is exquisite as Ariel in #TheLittleMermaid! I had a permanent smile on my face through this film. The cast is phenomenal and the music and story are so lovely. I can’t wait for audiences to see this! I still don’t know if I’m used to skinny Flounder yet. pic.twitter.com/3s2dZg4aGW

To my fellow Black girls who’ve been waiting for more of US represented in big Disney films: Halle DID it. She did it! #TheLittleMermaid was everything we deserve and more. Absolutely stunning from beginning to end. pic.twitter.com/r6ek3t3OX2

Just watched the #disneylittlemermaid at the #LittleMermaidPremiere and it was everything I hoped for and more! The cast was phenomenal and the visuals were breathtaking. 🧜‍♀️🌊 #LittleMermaid #DisneyMagic pic.twitter.com/bMaI1T0ttp

#TheLittleMermaid makes it pretty close to being the best live action Disney movie, however it still struggles in the villain department. Halle Bailey IS Ariel and I had literal chills throughout her performance. This is a little mermaid retelling like you’ve never seen before. pic.twitter.com/JjtLOR61vL

#TheLittleMermaid REVIEW: Delightful & emotional, the Disney MAGIC IS BACK! A beautiful coming of age adventure with awe inspiring imagery & action that’ll make you wet. This isn’t just another remake, it’s one of the best family films ever! A fitting end setting up what’s next pic.twitter.com/Cev1vAaIwg

#TheLittleMermaid really surprised me. It's my favorite Disney live-action remake by far. (Not saying much I know.) Halle Bailey's voice is phenomenal, and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric is charming. The rest of the cast is solid. The animals still look creepy but grew on me. pic.twitter.com/syjAjP3uCw

#TheLittleMermaid just became my fave Disney live-action remake! An absolute joy to watch. Halle Bailey is a total powerhouse in this, and will make you weep with “A Part Of Your World”. Melissa McCarthy is fantastic as Ursula. Some (new) songs were a bit forgettable…

It brings me no joy to report that The Little Mermaid is very mediocre. While the music is still great (minus two of the new songs) this live action version lacks Disney magic. The performances are fine with Melissa McCarthy being the standout. The iconic sea characters like… pic.twitter.com/T4y00uKn2d

#TheLittleMermaid is a live-action remake that retains the heart and soul of the story we know and love, and it’s elevated even further by a note-perfect star-making performance from Halle Bailey – she was born to be on the big screen, & she’s why this new take is worth watching. pic.twitter.com/Tcewp2L4MY

#TheLittleMermaid captures the magic of the original animated movie. Halle Bailey makes Ariel her own. Her chemistry with Jonah Hauer-King makes this movie soar. Daveed Diggs’ Sebastian is a scene stealer! pic.twitter.com/9Shc1VAVD3

    About The Little Mermaid (2023)

The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric.

While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

The Little Mermaid hits theaters on May 26th.
