Sick is a COVID themed thriller that wastes no time getting to the action and delivers a twist you won’t see coming!

    sick movie review

There have been a lot of films inspired by the pandemic and the majority of them have fallen quite flat. It feels like a played out trope at this point, so thankfully Sick breaks that mold. While the movie isn’t perfect, it knows what it is and it has an absolute blast with it — so that the viewers can too.

Sick wastes no time getting into action and murders. The film starts off in April of 2020. Cities all over the world are on lockdown. Store shelves are practically empty and people are required to wear masks in public and socially distance. Almost instantly we are treated a young man getting mysterious texts, and being stalked by an unknown person. And it just gets better from there.

In an effort to remain spoiler free we won’t go into too much more detail, but it doesn’t take long before the slashing starts and the audience is treated to some blood and gore. Sick was obviously created on a lower budget, meaning that there are practical effects here and perhaps so blood that doesn’t always look realistic. Still, that campiness kind of becomes part of the fun.

The main story focuses on a young girl named Parker who goes to a remote lake house to quarantine with one of her best friends — Miri. Once again, murder finds its way to the screen — but we won’t explain any more than that.

Sick is less than 90 minutes and entertains with brutal kills and an entertaining plot. Sure, this is a pandemic movie, but it feels like one that we have never seen before. They certainly put their spin on things.

It starts off intriguing, dips a bit in the middle, but sticks the landing in the end. Because of the short runtime it is impossible to feel like time was wasted watching Sick. It definitely has its faults — like mediocred acting and a disappointing script at times — but it is a slasher that delivers a lot of fun, so what more could you ask for?

The real surprise comes towards the end when a completely unexpected twist happens. This is when it feels like sticking through it was completely justified. The entire third act is bonkers, and will have audiences laughing and happy with their choice to watch Sick.

A COVID themed movie like you have never seen before, Sick takes the pandemic and throws in an even more deadly twist that is fun and unexpected. The junior cast does a decent enough job with the script they are given to allow this movie to really work the way it was meant to. While we were not head over heels in love with this one, it is impossible not to recommend it.
