Want to know how to stop your outside Christmas Tree from blowing over in the winter wind? So did I — and now I am sharing my DIY secrets with you!
My family loves to decorate for the holidays. We go all out. Including putting a Christmas Tree, or two, outside on our front porches. We use fake trees because then we can reuse them each year, and also so we don’t have to string lights up on them — if I am being totally honest. Because we live in upstate New York where the winter wind is INSANE, we had issues with our trees blowing over. That is, until now!
I discovered three super easy ways to get our outside Christmas Trees to stop blowing over in the wind — and now I am going to share them with you!
Bags Of Rocks
Securing your artificial Christmas tree with a bag of rocks might seem like the most obvious way to keep your outside tree from blowing over — and it is also the easiest. Year after year we have used this method, and it seems to work great of our 6 foot tree. Much taller than that though, and it can get harder to secure.
To use this method simply fill plastic store bags with rocks, pebbles, or sand, and tie them on to your tree stand. You want to use at least two, and place them opposite each other, so that the weight is evenly distributed.
TIP: Hide the rock bags with some burlap or fake presents so friends, family, and neighbors don’t notice bags hanging from the bottom of your tree.
An Umbrella Stand Base
Another great way to keep your outside Christmas tree from blowing over in the wind is to purchase a heavy duty weighted umbrella stand base. These stand bases can be filled with rocks or sand, and simply slip the trunk of your tree in to the spot where the umbrella stand would go.
We used this method last year and it really helped keep our tree put! This works best with artificial trees with thinner trunks.
TIP: Be sure to measure the thickness of your trunk before purchasing one!
Ratcheting Straps
Probably the most invasive way to keep your tree from blowing over — especially if you don’t have a railing near by — is to use ratcheting straps. As you can see, I like to couple this method with the bag of rocks method.
If you have spaces in between the boards on your porch, you can do it this way. If not, you can attach hooks to the side of your porch, or home, and put the straps through those. This is sure to keep your outside Christmas tree from blowing over!
Of course, you can always combine some of these options — making sure your Christmas tree stays extra safe during the entire holiday season! There is nothing worse than having to go outside and pick it up in a windy winter storm — and now you shouldn’t have to!
