    7 layer bar dessert recipe

When I was a little girl, my mom would make this 7 layer bar dessert recipe for every holiday. I have a sweet tooth and this was one of my favorite treats to satisfy that. Now I make these 7 layer bars to bring with me to holiday parties, and they are always a hit!

    Jump to Recipe

TIP: These are VERY sweet (which I love), but not everyone does. So you might want to cut them in to very small bars. A lot goes a long way with these 7 layer bars!

    What You Need:

    • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
    • 3/4 cup shredded coconut
    • 1 stick of butter
    • 1 cup of chocolate chips
    • 14 oz. sweetened condensed milk
    • 1 cup of butterscotch chips
    • 1 cup of chopped walnuts (optional)

In case you are dealing with someone with a nut allergy, you can always omit the walnuts. Or, if you don’t like them. I often put a smaller amount, about half a cup, so they are not too overwhelming. I do the same with the shredded coconut, since I am not a giant fan of coconut.

The best part about this dessert is that you can add more, or less, of things according to your taste. Every now and then I make them with chopped pretzels instead of walnuts. That is delicious too!

    Seven Layer Bar Dessert Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt stick of butter and add to graham cracker crumbs.

Layer with chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, chopped walnuts, and coconut.

Top with sweetened condensed milk. This will serve as the “glue” for your bars. It may look like a lot, but it will sink and spread throughout your pan while cooking.

    Bake for 30 minutes.

TIP: When warm, score bars. If you do not do this, it can be very hard to cut once cooled.
