Futurama Season 11: Futurama is back… again. This time the series lands on Hulu and while it just more of the same, it is great to see it return. This review is based solely on the first six episodes of Futurama Season 11.
Fans of Futurama have been through it, as the show has been canceled time and time again. Well, it is now back. Again. This time the series will air on Hulu, with its eleventh season kicking off on July 24th via weekly episodes. While you don’t necessarily need to have seen all ten seasons before this one, it will be helpful to understand some inside jokes, and to especially understand how the season opens.
Note: This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Futurama would not exist without the labor of the writers and actors in both unions.
Here’s the thing about Futurama Season 11, it is the same as it always was. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Well, that depends on how much you enjoyed the show in the past. It is still an animated satire that pokes fun at the world we live in. Of course this means that Futurama Season 11 tackles new topics like vaccines, bitcoin, and binge-watching, but does so in a similar way as it has addressed social issues before.
In the first six episodes, there are some points that have really hit close to home. The biggest of which is cancel culture. That is something that we has reared its ugly head and is, quite frankly, getting out of control. Futurama Season 11 is completely unafraid to shed some light on the ridiculousness that it has brought to this world.
Having seen just the first six episodes, I can admit that I had a blast with them. It brought me back to my teen years when I started watching the series. While there are certainly some consequences to things that happened in previous seasons with storylines that never fully played out, I think it is done in a way where you can come into Futurama Season 11 having not watched the show before.
That being said, certain things will mean a lot more to you if you have. The episodes are a quick half hour comedy and true to its nature, it isn’t afraid to throw something emotional at you now and again.
Overall Thoughts
Futurama Season 11 starts off strong. It embraces new social issues while remaining true to previous seasons. Newcomers to the series should have no problem or confusion when watching it, however there are a lot of moments that will mean for the longtime fans than those who didn’t go on the journey with the show.
If you are a fan of Futurama, it is safe to say that you will be a fan of this season too. It really does play out like more of the same, but not in a way that is redundant or frustrating.
