The newest Marvel Disney+ show, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law episode 1, is now streaming on Disney+. Here is our spoiler review and breakdown.
She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Episode 1 Review
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law episode 1 starts off with Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) breaking the fourth wall. She lets us know that she is already She-Hulk and this episode becomes her backstory. As for the backstory itself, it was really well done. Very fast paced while it working for what it had to do.
To start the backstory we see Bruce and Jennifer in a car. Bruce is talking about how his arm monitor lets him change back and forth from Hulk to Bruce. This is the same monitor we see in the post credits scene of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings.
Shortly after this they get into a car crash avoiding a ship from Sakkar — the same planet from Thor: Ragnarok. We get more on that later. In the accident, Walters gets her arm cut, and Banner’s blood gets into her cut; thus turning her into the She-Hulk.
Transforming back and forth, she goes through a few situations seeing her true power, but then gets knocked out. She wakes up on an island in Mexico and as she is walking around the island we see a few Easter eggs in Bruce’s compound.
Jennifer Walters sees an Iron Man helmet, which looks more like an Ultron helmet. Also in the background we can see a gladiator helmet — the same on Hulk wore on Sakkar when fighting in the Grandmaster’s arena.
The Sakkar ship could mean a lot of different things but to keep it quick — in the comics hulk has a long lost son, named Skaar. Since time moves differently on Sakkar (as shown in Thor: Ragnarok), his son could already be old enough to come looking for him.
The rest of the episode is mostly She-Hulk being trained by Hulk himself. One super great thing about the Hulk exposition through She-Hulk: Attorney at Law episode 1 is how tormented he was. It might sound sick, but Bruce is a character meant to be tormented by his own anger, and Jennifer being able to control her anger right away should rightfully make him mad.
It also allows for some great character work with Bruce. This is easily the best Smart Hulk so far because the trauma is actually handled in a serious way — not goofy like Endgame. If they keep this tone, Marvel can slowly make up for a lot of bad character decisions regarding Hulk in the MCU.
On top of that, the relationship between She-Hulk and Hulk is perfectly executed. They don’t dumb down Hulk to make her look better but instead they each play to their advantages which makes the fights so much cooler. She-Hulk vs. Hulk was perfectly executed — one example being Hulk doing one big clap and She-Hulk doing multiple (a reference to The Incredible Hulk).
But finally, to talk about the last (and worst) part of this episode — the court room scene. Was it amazing to see She-Hulk transform and shut up everyone in the court room? YES. But the action was unbearably bad. The cuts were too much and nothing flowed correctly.
As a whole though this episode was great. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law episode 1 has a solid pilot that has hooked many viewers (this writer included) from the very start.
